I'm having a problem with mysterious 15kB data usage. My mobile service is showing random 15kB data usage at random times, over the last week there have been 48 session.
I've disabled data and I am still getting these 15kB sessions, then I changed the APN to a dummy APN, and yet I am still getting this 15kB sessions. From my understanding this should be impossible for my phone to connect to the data network?(I have wifi on)
My phone is currently running slim bean, but I have swapped rom(PARANOIDANDROID) the other day and I was getting the same issue with that rom too.
Any suggestions?
Sounds like your mobile provider is ripping you off man. Does this happen in another phone? If not then it's most likely your phone, but I highly doubt it as I haven't seen reports of this and this doesn't happen to me.
Those bits of data are typically location services. You may have something on your phone that is using GPS to report back location.

Thanks for the informaiton, and that is what I thought too, but how can my phone connect to data network if the data is turn off and I've changed the APN to a dummy APN

Renaming an apn as dummy won't stop it from functioning. What you are likely seeing is carrier related. It's purpose is for phone location for 911 services. In an apn it is referenced as supl. It has the ability to call on data, meaning it can turn data on and off at it's own discretion. If it was not showing on your carrier log before, it could be a change with how your current rom is handling it or a change with your apn. Not sure, other than I always see it in my data log and I have supl referenced in one of my apns. I run a two apn setup. One for data and one for MMS and supl. This keeps them functioning without the worry of them failing when calling data when it is off.

Thanks for the information, the reason I am tracking this is because my service provider charges $0.05 per MB, so each 15kB is counted as 1MB(rounded up to MB billing) and I am on pre paid plan. I don't make a lot of call or SMS. My reasoning was I could recharge with $30 and it takes 12 months till it expires, but the 15kB=1MB is killing this idea. I have also tried leaving data on full-time, but all this does is give me 5-10 data session an hour, killing my pre paid plan.
I have also tried 10 or so different roms over the last 3-4 months and the same thing is happening on all the rom's I've tried.

I have the same problem with the Nexus 5 and finally figured it out. It's related to AGPS, assisted GPS.
To disable it, Goto Settings - Location - Mode
Use Device Only. Getting a GPS signal will take longer, a minute.
High accuracy or Battery Saving uses mobile networks to speed up getting GPS signal, which some providers register as a 15kb data usage.
Did you say 15kb?

hi.a friend of mine got a n1 just two days ago.after playing with it for some time(this is also my first time playing with android) i noticed that the data connection is always on and as he doesnt have a data plan he had been charged a lot.
we searched and found an app called APNdroid and now it seems that the phone doesnt connect automatically.but now he cant send mms o recieve. the mms button is ticked in apndroid and all the settings seem to be fine.can some one please help.
thanks
You need a separate APN for mms on most networks.
Question - what is the point of having an N1 without a data connection? Might as well have any old cheap crappy phone (which would probably actually be better for making calls than the N1 anyway!).

Hey you should try toggle data widget, it allows mms but blocks all other data connections. Its what I use when I'm not running the desire rom. I have to block data because it is so much more expensive here in New Zealand than most other places. 10mb a day for $1 and then $1 for every mb over that.. The nexus one would chew that up in seconds lol
Hi guys,
Why every time when I try to open android market, there is a notification says this transaction costs me 1 cent?
Now I can only open android market in airplane mode. Do you know how to solve this problem?
WOw that is pretty interesting.
Two things
1. I would email google about it
2. Try to delete the market cache from menu - appliction - manage applications.
Is it something related to your data plan
or it does charge when you connected to wifi too?
This phone has an issue. Even though u select not to use mobile data, it will still try to use it with some apps, market is one of them. Next time u open market, look at the status bar, u'll notice H for a brief moment, that's why u get charged, it's not google, it the phone itself. I called dell and talked to them about this, they though the model I got was.faulty, so they sent me a new one, but the new one acts the same way. I also called at&t and have them fully remove data of my phone, but they said they can't do it. the only sollution I thought of, is to use market through your browser.
or try some antivirus program.
I also see this issue, every time I open android market app - it downloads something (can see the H in notification are for a brief moment). But with amazon market app, it doesn't do this. Seems like AT&T is the problem here; maybe their policies are ok to steal 1 cent from non-data plan users.
I had G2X for a few days and this was not happening on that phone and I used the same sim card. It's not a virus, it happens even after factory reset.
This is nothing, try to factory reset your phone and see how much you get charged at initial android set up. You will lose at least a $1 by skipping set up steps in a hurry just to get to options and disable data. wtf is the phone downloading when you aren't even hooked up to your google account? It just choses to use data for no reason...
I reported this before
I reported this before. I even wrote to the FCC and AT&T looked at it and said in their report it was not them, It has to be Google and the Market Software.
If 3G data is off they shouldn't be turning it on and running up your data cost.
That's my complaint. I have a 2Gig plan. and have only used 200Meg at the most during the a month. It's the principal of the issue. You have Data disabled, and it turns it on. By the way, It adds 1K to data each time you access the market.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970826
I turn off the data network when I'm not using it and have never had it turn itself on. When you use the market there will always be some data traffic back and forth as it loads the 'specials' etc. and even when you don't use it there will be activity as the device checks for application updates and emails.
As for the 1 cent charges, do they actually appear on your bank account?
Doesn't your phone need internet access to go on the market? Like to Download what Apps are on the market? Makes sense really
Did they reply your complaint? Were you complaining to ATT or Google?
I think I should send a complaint about this issue too.

I don't use mobile network at all, in the settings, the mobile network for att is not activated. I use wifi all the time.
However, sometimes when I open android market, the mobile network is enabled automatically (yes, I can see an "H" icon in the notifacation bar). I think there is a bug with the android market.
BTW, I'm a prepaid plan user, att did charge 1 cent every time.

Yes, but I use wifi, and the mobile network is disable.
I guess android market enables the mobile network automatically, but only for a very short time when it starts up, after that, it starts to use wifi.
This probably is a bug of android market, I will report this to Google. Do you guys know how to report bugs to Google?

Oh I get what you mean, that does suck. Especially when you have it in airplane mode, thought that stopped everything!
This isn't just the market app, I had this happen to me in Skype, so I uninstalled it. I also tried Amazon market yesterday, mobile network is never in use with them, so it's a good idea to use that instead.
I think it's Dell, because like I said before, I had Optimus 2X for a few days and market doesn't do this on that phone. I also talked to At&t several times, they refuse to turn off data access
shouldn't charge just to look at the Apps.....something not right there. I persoannly have not seen this yet.
More Info about Report
I filed a complaint to the FCC naming AT&T, and Google. Only AT&T responded to the complaint. When Filing the complaint online you are limited as the how much you can type so I had to shorten it. Only AT&T contacted me, and stated that it was not them. As I kept checking this, It has to be the Market Place, and Google Software issue. If you have Mobile Data turned off, and operate only on WiFi, Mobile Data is activated when connecting to Market Place, and 1K of data is transmitted and it is added to your data usage.see below.

FCC Complaint
My complaint is that my phone is using data when data is turned off.
Phone = Dell Streak 5
Application = Google Market Place
Carrier = AT&T Mobile
The phone, has an option to turn off 3G data connection so that you won’t be charged data when connected to WiFi. I use the phone most of the time when home on a WiFi network expecting not to incur data usage and the charges associated with using a 3G data connection.
After updating my phone to the latest software on the 23, February, 2011, and installing a program called 3G Watchdog to track 3G data usage, my data use was increasing. I checked this over the next 2 hours and it went from 7 KB to 23 KB of data use. After checking the phone several times making sure the data connection was still turned off, I observed that when using WiFi only that accessing the Google Market Place (an application to download software that came with the phone) that it was turning on the 3G data connection even though it was turned off. I had to go into the settings of the phone and turn the setting on then off to cancel the 3G data connection. Note: after a minuite of so it will shut off by itself.
My complaint is that there is no place that states that Google Market Place will turn on and use 3G data connection when you have it turned off. Dell just released the software update for the phone. After talking to Dell Support tonight for about an hour. They said it just does that.
If you turn off 3G data, so it cannot be used:
Why is Google Market Place turning it on and using the 3G data connection?
Why is Google Market Place or the Dell software update allowing access to your 3G data connection, turning it on and using your data without your authorization when you have your 3G data connection disabled and turned off in the phone settings.
When accessing Google Market Place 3G data connection charges are being incurred.
This unauthorized 3G data use could create an over limit of your data account and cause an increase of your billing for data use of almost double on your data account.
Resolution:
I would like to see the phone or software work as you would expect it to.
1: If I turn off the 3G data connection it would stay off and not be used until it was turned back on.
2: A stop of automatic 3G data usage with out authorization when disabled and turned off.
3: A rewrite of the Dell software update and/or Google Market Place software application or any other software for the Android operating system to not turn on and use a 3G data connection when you have turned off or disabled it.
if you go to accounts& sync setting there is a option call Background data uncheck it, thenyou won't see that happing.
Wouldn't everyone with a streak get the same problem if it was Google that was to blame? Mine stays on wifi, when I load the market app. Maybe its certain streaks or carrier problem.
A quick background:
- I have an International Note - factory unlocked
- I signed up with Straight Talk few days ago - ordered the AT&T SIM Card
- Voice, text messaging and MMS works
- I am in Northern California
Problem is, the data connection is very UNSTABLE. I will have full bar, can browse the web and then.... BOOM! Suddenly no data, even though my phone show 3G and full bar. The only fix? Turn ON Airplane Mode, Turn it OFF or REBOOT, which is clunky and time consuming at best, especially when you are out and about.
This is not just an annoyance, but makes the phone almost unusable since I need data for my Exchange email, Google Navigation, etc. I DO NOT use the Note for tethering.
My APN is as folllow:
APN 1...
Name: Internet
APN: att.mvno
APN type: internet
APN type: default
APN 2...
Name: MMS
APN: att.mvno
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: proxy.mvno.tracfone.com
MMS port: 80
APN type: mms
Fast Dormancy: Disabled
For those who use Straight Talk, could you tell me:
1). If you experiences the above
2). Where you are at
3). What APN do you use
4). Do you enable "Fast Dormancy"?
I am trying to figure it out if this is my Note or just ST flaking in my area.
I had the same problem with fast dormancy disabled so ok re-enabled it and it has been fine since.

Same issues here with an att sim and tried both single apn settings that came with straight talk and the two separate ones as you have. Also tried both fast dormancy enabled and disabled with same sketchy results. My location is Milwaukee, WI. Seems prone to disconnect right right after I connect to the market. Turning on and off the data connection re-establishes the connection though.

That's interesting... it seems that I have to ENABLE Fast Dormancy for a stable data connection. I will try that and will update here.
I wonder if it has something to do with which tower I am connecting to...
Its really odd because everywhere I read AT&T doesnt support fast dormancy..
I still think its something at&t does to prepaid because my gf's SGS2 doesnt have that problem and I dont seem to notice it when I used her sim card..I'm on ICS and theres no way to turn fast dormancy off or on.

Yeah, I was thinking maybe some areas had upgraded equipment that supports it or something? Like you one of the first things I did was disable it per the instructions in the ST thread and never tried with it enabled until recently just out of curiosity.

I turned ON Fast Dormancy and I was getting even unstable data, so I turned it OFF.
I was driving to another city today for lunch and I noticed my data connection was pretty stable. I had been doing a lot of testing: Google Maps, Email, Pulse News app, etc.
However, one thing is consistent: everytime I open Android Market (Google Play now), it will load UP until where I want to DOWNLOAD an APP (for testing - small apps - less than 2 Mb), the data connection shuts off....same problem as what I posted above.
I tried doing so about 4 times in 3 different location: home, work and lunch place, each location is about 5 miles apart. Same results.
Is Straight Talk monitoring and BLOCKING app download?
I'm using straight talk on my gf's S2 with tethering and its blazing fast (6 Mbps down and 1.1 Mbps up) and stable right now. Although I'm in Michigan atm (heading to California tomorrow). I plan to switch from AT&T's price gouging plan to straight talk when I get back so I'll let you guys know how it is in Modesto.
I have the same issue with market and sporadically, otherwise.
I don't think this is a straight talk thing. It doesn't make sense.

Even when my data connection used to be flaky with Fast Dormancy disabled before I re-enabled it, I was always able to install & update apps from the Market. The weird thing is that it was pretty much only NON-Google apps that gave me problems with the data dropping out.
I would call ST Tech Support tomorrow if I were you and see if they can check your account and stuff.

I am in Northern California as well, Fremont to be exact. I have not noticed any problems with data while out and about here. I use the exact setting as posted in post 1 in this thread.
While at home, I just turned off wifi, and tried to connect to the Play store, No Connection - Retry. So I turned on/off Flight Mode, went back to the Play store, and was able to download a couple of things no problem.
This is pretty the same thing that would happen to me on my last Android phone, so maybe it is more of a Android thing than it is a Straight Talk thing.
Other than this, my Straight Talk data connection seems to be fine when I'm out and about.

Same here. I've been using nothing but Android since the G1 and I've never had these issues until the Note on ST, so I don't think that it's an Android OS issue UNLESS Samsung has a bug in the OS on the Note.

W/ that said I installed the Chinese ICS Leak when it first came out and I had worse signals than on the GB rom's. Could have been the radio I flashed.
Haven't had this problem before or even heard of it. My phone showed normal data signal all day today, but every app said I had no connection. It even looked like data was uploading/downloading as the arrows were popping up from time to time. I tried a few reboots but still having the problem.
I'm on Vanilla Rootbox, but haven't had any problems until today. Nothing has changed on my phone in weeks.
Any ideas?

the H+ and H show which data network you are connected to. and the up/down arrows show if the phone is(or trying to) send/receive data. neither of which tell you if you are actually getting data flow. normally, you would call your provider in this situation. if they tell you that you service is fine, ask them to refresh your connection.
and the issue of you not getting help because youre on a nexus 4 doesnt make much sense. they want youy to pay for the service, they dont make much money off the phone. but if you feel like that about their service, why are you still with them? there are better companies to use, and are inexpensive.

Yes, I just checked and I can access internet via my broswer, although it was super slow! I didn't check that yesterday. So it looks like my data is being slow. I had this problem originally when I had bad APN settings. I do have the correct APNs though. Maybe I need to update them. I'll call for a refresh and see if that helps.

Thanks all. I forgot the stupid APNs will work for a few weeks then go to super slow data speeds. I did reformat a few weeks ago and haven't done anything to my APNs. I just don't get why they work fine for a few weeks then slow down. Resetting my APNs to the above should work, I think that's the one I was using before.
Got it working again?

For a few days, yes, today MMS stopped working. I'm really confused at why certain APNs will work for a period of time then just stop working. The default APN worked for over 2 weeks, then went to super slow speeds. The latest one I updated too, just above, worked for a few days, not I can't send or receive MMS.
I think the one that worked for me before had 2 setups. One for data, and one for MMS. I'm going to set that back up now.

Yeah try setting 2 apns one for data other for MMS. I've used that method before and seems to work fine. But then again I've never had issues to begin with.

Hi there!
I was just charged again for data roaming while absolutely all data in my G2 was disabled (both checkboxes roaming and data were off). This is very frustrating, as this time it was a long trip and I was charged more than 50 USD equiv of roaming charges . What I can detect is that it is billed twice separately each time it connects i.e. while roaming I can see two separate 50kB packets charged in one minute and in my home network I can see two 512kB packets billed separately in one minute. It happens randomly, around 5 to 10 times a day. I am suspecting it has to do do something with location or location history because previously it stopped when I disabled location in the top bar during roaming (or roamed to another country). I think it started happening when I've upgraded to Lollipop earlier this year. My model is LG-D802 and software is V30b-260-01. Wonder if it could be malicious software, bug in Lollipop, or something else? Did anyone experienced such problem before? I will eventually call the hotline (Lg or operator) but I need cold facts as otherwise they will start blaming everyone including their mothers just to get rid of me (yes, this is how it works in some European countries... ).
So, Dear XDA users, do you have time for small investigation?
Cheers,
Marcin
Are you the one turning off the data? Why not use Airplane mode? I'd call your service provider first then go from there.

Yep, roaming was always off but data is the thing I turn off. I cannot use airplane mode all the time because wifi does not work and you actually cannot receive any calls. I think better idea would be to intentionally provide false APN data. But that is not the answer to rhe question, I need to find what is the root cause of those connections? I can factory reset the phone and try again if it will happen again it would be definitely software/bb related...
