[Q] Digitiser Performance - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) General

One of my main issues with the 2012 Note 10.1 was the non linear response of the wacom digitiser at the edges of the screen and the poor resolution of the capacitive digitiser causing straight lines drawn with the finger to become wavy.
Can someone with the 2014 note comment on if these issues are still present?
Thanks in advance!

Huh, I didn't know this. I was always really annoyed by the performance of my touchscreen in terms of touch and thought it was because I had bought a refurbished model. I guess I'll be able to report in on this on Friday when i get mine.

That is true of all active capacitive digitizers and possibly all capacitive digitizers. It is supposed to be compensated for in software. For Windows devices there is a calibration tool to update the compensation to fix this effect.
Is there a calibration tool for the Note (any edition)?

Wacom digitizer pens use radio waves, not capacitance, to determine position. Inaccuracate position reporting at screen edges is usually due to the metal framing used in the LCD affecting the radio levels/timing. The best way for this to work would be to use a non-metal LCD frame, or pack the Wacom grid within the LCD frame, but the Wacom grid needs to be larger than the drawing area, so that's unlikely. (This is why independent Wacom tablets have such a wide border around them.)

This is from my current 10.1, will do the same with the 2014 edition when I get it... (imatiently taps toes on floor...)

Correct and incorrect. Yes, Wacom uses EM fields and that technology is an ACITVE capacitance digitizer. It is still a capacitive screen but different from the typical passive capacitive screens.
Other than that, we are saying the same thing. This is a physics problem that affects all digitizers of this type and no fault of Samsung.

Is your Light & Proximity sensor Vertical or Horizontal?

I know that there are many variants of the galaxy S but there ive seen some models of the I9000 having a vertical square shaped L&P sensor such as this

whereas mine has a horizontal oval/circular shaped L&P sensor. Any thoughts?
Mine are horizontal (not like the pic). What difference does it make anyways, lol.
the 2 dots are side by side
that will be horizontal
the picture is vertical (top & bottom)
if you are asking this question because you are concerned about the Screen Protector, then there's no need to worry it works, even if covered
Side by side here (horizontally)
side by side here.. could just be a mistake in the drawing of the i9000
Horizontal for me as well.

yeah, just trying to warn people to check it out first as it was really unsightly.
Now im using a screen protector which covers everything except for the home button and speaker and its so seamless i dont notice its there

It DOES (if you apply enough pressure).
i agree this phone screen is basically scratch resistant. The back cover on the other hand is horrid, and has many scratches... Dropped it a few times on asphalt and the phone front looks band new but the back is starting to show signs of wear and tear.

Hummm interesting that looks like big foots put a thumb print on your screen
Seriously tho no its does not look normal ive seen simular issue on lcd screen with abnormal pressure points. Also when screen refresh is out of sync and strobes lines if I would suggest returning to supplier.
Hey a simular patern appears on a crt monitor when a strong magnetic field is near by the side...

i would say it's normal because that's just how the screen of S4 is. on my S4 also banding is visible especially on gray color. you might try to change phone for another one but think hard before doing it because you might get phone with screen that looks even worse.
Its not normal... I have this problem before with my previous galaxy and samsung replaced it for a new one..
http://oi42.tinypic.com/2r5ysux.jpg
I have that problem too, but didn't notice until about 3 months after purchase. Samsung doesn't replace with a new one, but a refurbished one, and who knows what problems a refurbished one will eventually happen. Anyone ever figure out if this was normal or not? Seems to be a lot of people with this issue if you do a simple Google search. It doesn't really bother me unless I'm on a gray screen.
I had the same problem on my Galaxy S5 too (horizontal lines)
goodbye Super AMOLED Display !!! :victory:
goodbye samsung !!! :victory:
I bought a LG G3 today http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3 :good:

[TUTORIAL][RESHARE]Calibrating the S-Pen for desired sensitivity[DO-IT-YOURSELF]

To everyone reading this : I shared it because I found this helpful and so people can find this more easily rather than hunting around.
Enjoy
Touchscreens are all the rage these days, and it seems that the stylus has become a relic of the past thanks to newer and better fingertip responsive smartphone displays. But when it comes to phablets like Samsung's Galaxy Note line, the added S-Pen is definitely helpful for more accurate and precise actions (and a less greasy screen).

Of course, there are disadvantages of using an S-Pen too, one being hardware issues. Unlike your finger, the S-Pen can malfunction and become a huge problem, not giving you that precision it once used to. So, if you're having problems with choppiness, light touches, or having to press hard for your pen to register, you can...
Smack It
I am a firm believer of the "if you hit it, it shall work," theory of the mid-80s. If you hit any malfunctioning device with just the right amount of force and anger, it usually fixes the problem. That goes for the Note's and Note 2's S-Pen, as well.
Take the S-Pen, and slam it decently hard on a flat surface. It's that simple. Now if that doesn't work, you can take a*more technically and less-forceful route*to help fine tune your Samsung S-Pen...
Adjust the Potentiometer
The*potentiometer*is an electro-mechanical transducer that converts the movement of your stylus into electrical resistance (or something like that). Basically it's what makes your stylus work with your screen.
And guess what?
You can*open up your S-Pen and adjust the meter yourself, no matter*what S-Pen it is.
This will work for the Samsung Galaxy Note's, Galaxy Note 2's, and Galaxy Note 10.1's S-Pen—or pretty much any other stylus with a button. This will not work on any regular conductive styluses without buttons.
You will need to take off the click button on the body of the S-Pen. You can just pop it off with a razor. And don't worry—it can be put back into place without a problem.
Once this button is off, you will have access to the potentiometer.
The potentiometer on the LEFT in the picture above and below is the one you will be adjusting.
Using a razor or small screwdriver, you can turn the potentiometer clockwise to decrease sensitivity and counter-clockwise to increase it. Test it out and see if it works to your liking, then put the button back on.
This tip could also work with a bunch of other styli with buttons, not just the Samsung branded versions, but will not work on regular conductive styli, since all that they do is simulate your fingertip.

Screen is not flat

I got my note 4 for 1.5 week now and today i saw something very very odd.
The screen was off and i saw the reflection of a ceiling lightbulb in my screen and what i noticed was that at a certain spot the reflection gets deformed! like you would push too hard on the screen and you'd push that section a little deeper.
I tried to capture a photo but that didnt really work out as the camera is blinded by the reflection. It looks like the glass just isnt completely flat , like when its still liquid and cooling down you'd put your finger on it to make an indent..
Its located in the middle heightwise and about 2/3rd to the right side. I've never ever seen this before, only with my ipod touch 4g i could push the glass and it would change reflections (so it kinda bent a little bit) but it came back to how it should be when pressure was released.
I've been very careful so i have no idea how this could have occured.. should i bring it back to the store or something?
I'm not really sure what you are describing but sounds like a defect. Better try returning it before you cant.
Return it before it's too late. That spot could be ripe for problems down the road when you've run out of warranty (ie weakness in the glass.)
Mine's the same. Almost like it has ripples but only noticable when the screen's off and I look at a bright light reflected in it.
I assumed it was normal . . . Perhaps due to the 2.5D (or whatever it's called) glass production. Doesn't seem to make any difference to the display or to touch sensitivity.
Anyone else have this?
Vey vey slight ripple on mine, but it's still considered normal. 2.5D is the rounded feature at the edges of the screen where it meets the metal rim.
yea mine isnt noticeable when the screen is on, only when looking at bright reflections. I'm going to the store just so they can notice it too and maybe write it on my warranty or something
Mine isn't flat either! Remember my Galaxy Note 10.1 had a similar problem but it was only on the back cover... having the same problem on the front side is totally unacceptable to me and I will return it tomorrow!!
Problem must be that components underneath the screen is sticking up too much.

OGS (one glass solution / fully laminated ) displays in headunits

Are there any headunits with OGS IPS displays? Or even just the display I can swap instead of the display that is in the head unit from new.
Ideally 7" 2 DIN format, but I kinda resigned and even bigger ones, in "VAG" format would be acceptable now.
I did put put matte screen protector on the top polarizer IPS screen that comes with the units and still, in the sun, it is pretty ****ty and I can see the matefoil - space - hints of what the screen is probably showing.
I do know there are no matte screen units, that is ok, I can deal with using matte screen-protector, even thought it is obviously(?) not the same as light diffusion layer being fused with top polarizer.
some time ago this was also called fully laminated
screen solution all HUs I saw so far uses on top, OGS on bottom

here you can see, probably probably OGS on the right
This is funny to me as screen on the left is being presented as better
BTW Even old brand units do not use OGS, example of non OGS using top of the line expensive brand name unigs
https://imgur.com/TpMNk6e
(this one maybe has at least semi matte top polarizer)
https://imgur.com/q1oDbCH
https://imgur.com/4tHL1IW

I remember phones about year 2010 used this type of screen, but when I was trying to find the screen to replace whatever comes with the HU I found that even 7" tablets nowadays use nonOGS again. (see picture of the two amazon fire HDs)
BTW this is how the nonOGS with matte foil OVER the top polarizer looks in the car with roof up, however with the roof down it is barelly usable - and no it is not "only" because of screen low brightness (I did measure it at 410nits). I case you do not see the issue - the color that should be black is lighter gray than gray of the car interior, and no it is not because of the light diffusion - you can see on the images above how it would look without matte foil
years ago there was option from ownice in "VAG shape", but that is not on sale anymore, but they provide nice visualization of the difference
