Stuck in fastboot - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, everyone!
Yesterday I wanted to update my rooted Nexus (2012, Wifi) to 4.3 Android. So I tried a "Back to stock" using Nexus Root Toolkit. After that the Nexus is stuck in fastboot mode, if I turn it on I see the Google logo, but green square with the START appears and the only option that works (other that POWER OFF) is Restart bootloader.
I tried many of the methods (hard reset, fastbooting an img using commands) I found but nothing seems to work, it's just stuck
Cheers

Try with you nexus toolkit to unlock first. This worked for me.

Need help same problem!
Nothing helps ..
I was going to flash stock and unroot N7 wifi so i can uppdate to 4.3
But it didnt work and im stuck in fastboot mode.
Reset dosent work
Trying reflashing dosent work
Use nexus toolkit 1.73
tried restore stock kernel and waited 10 min.. but only sais booting downloaded image
Tried unlock (Device where already unlocked) and loc
EDIT: I got it fixed... i reflashed same build 4,2 and it did work
so i tried again to flash 4.3 and got same ****
and finally i did force flash mode and installed 4.3
Ps. i did restart pc and n7 inbetween all steps

hi i need help on this, i tried to flash android 4.4 krt16s on my nexus 7 2nd gen using the nexus root toolkit. but unfortunately the flashing failed and now i'm stuck on the fastboot mode. i tried to i tried to press the start (coz its the only option enabled for me) but its stuck on the google screen, now its not booting up, i tried to turn it off and turn it on again but its still stuck on the google screen. please help me get it back to normal working condition :crying:

Stuck in fastboot ot fail the ota or bootloop all can be fixed by downloading google stock nexus image and letting toolkit flash it. Ull be going back to stock without root but then u have a working device and a solid bass then start your tinkering again.
I do soft brick just for fun and fix it later so i know how bad things can get.

[Q] Nexus 10 Bricked :/

Hey,
I need some help with my Nexus 10, it's stuck at the moment.
I ran fastboot oem unlock via the Samsung Google Nexus 10 ToolKit 1.3.0 (updated for 4.2.2) and as soon as it was done it rebooted and was stuck...
Booting normally it gets to the bootlogo and just sits there forever, going round and round and round.
If I try to boot into fastboot it shows that it's unlocked but I can't change change to recovery using the volume rocker it's just a solid static screen, only choice is to start which boots back into the normal boot logo.
I have no way to use adb or fastboot... it's just stuck :/ How do I recover/unbrick this?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Reboot holding Power and both volume buttons and you should be able to get to recovery

I'm on the xda-devs irc at the moment and we've got so far... but still its messed up.
- Recovery is dead (can't get into it atm, orange triangle guy every time)
- Flashed stock via fastboot and unrooted, but on reboot I get the triangle guy.
- I can boot into unsecure roms (temporary)
- I can boot into temporary recoverys, clearing cache works but davlik cache and factory reset doesn't work both say "failed"
I'm currently awaiting the guy whos been helping me get back from the shops.
From what I remember you need to either install something or run a command after "oem unlock" for security reasons. Android wont let you boot back into the OS until you have wiped all the data after the unlock.
The orange guy means it's working. There's a button combo to hit at that screen to get the recovery to boot. Once there do a factory reset and your done.
That's why toolkits sick, they teach you nothing and when they break your stuck

Can you flash a factory image to it via fastboot?

The pressing 3 buttons at once; cycling to recovery... method wasnt working because there was no recovery accessable what so ever and temporary recoveries weren't working.
That's what a few guys in IRC said too about the toolkits haha
Thankfully some guy by the name of YellowGTO spent some time helping me out and we finally got there in the end, he's awesome and extremely patient

Okay, updates for everyone just incase someone else gets the problem.
- Factory Images via fastboot flashed fine but never stuck, just kept returning me to triangle dude.
- Fix permissions, did nothing
- Restoring stock recovery did nothing, I still couldn't get to a recovery.
- Temporary recoveries only had limited functionality.
I decided to unlock an already unlocked phone again
I flashed stock, Ran file permissions
Used the temporary recovery to clear the cache/davlik (previously didn't work)
I re-rooted, Installed TWRP 2.4.4.0, this finally stuck.
I double checked that it had stuck by booting the system, rebooting into recovery, powering device of and powering it on to Android. It was all working perfectly.
I then made my backup and put a custom rom and kernel on, it's working lovely now.
It seems that somewhere during the oem unlock it messed up some partitions or something resulting in recoveries and flashing not to work/stick.
Good to hear it's working for you. The issue is that the stock N10 bootloader does not wipe the data partitions correctly as it should. So after an unlock you need to go into the stock recovery and wipe it. Boot once, then go and flash all your flasheys

That's the thing, the recovery wasn't available in any way shape or form and temporary recoveries wouldn't wipe the cache... the oem unlock went wrong somehow even though it had full power, wasn't interrupted or anything.
I'm glad it's all working now, I thought the device was completely dead at one stage.
I think you had the problem almost everyone runs into:
As you can see in the video, you just have to try for a bit to actually get the recovery menu to open - My heart dropped a little before I knew that as well

Not sure if this will work for you, but its worth a try. Attempt holding the power button while its booting up to allow it to turn off (do not let it go when the screen turns black). Then hold volume down and quickly release and re-hold the power button.

Try to flash a recovery and then do a factory reset
Otherwise try booting in the bootloader and reflash the stock rom

The bootloader is the fastboot screen
There you should be able to use ./flash-all.bat (extracted from the stock rom)

locked bootloader wont unlock

Hi everyone. Here is the deal im having with my nexus 7 (not the 2013 model) with jop40d.zip. The person I purchased from didnt tell me it was soft bricked. It seems as though he tried to root it but failed while at the same time relocked the bootloader. So I've tried almost everything in my mind to get it back to normal. It wont let me adb sideload the stock rom it says "installation aborted" or any other rom. Also when i boot up it goes directly to the bootloader which gives me the options start, restart bootloader, recovery mode, power off. start obviously does nothing. restart bootloader just for some reason turns the device off, recovery mode takes me the caution sign where i can adb sideload or factory restore. factory restore hangs and doesn't do anything then shuts off. adb sideload always fails when loading up the zip files. i factory restored the cache. I'm not sure what to do anymore. I spent a fair amount of money on this device but now it all seems like a mistake. Can anyone who has fixed this issue help me out? I would deeply and greatfully appreciate it.
-Cheers

also I wanted to add. I have the android sdk installed and all drivers installed properly. as well as adb/fastboot.
Stop trying to use adb, follow the sticky at the top that says flashing a factory rom using fastboot/return to stock. If you can't type fastboot devices and get a serial number return then the drivers are not installed properly.
Sent from my Nexus 7(2012) that has zero issues.

hey slow cobra. yes fastboot does recognize the device. however fastboot oem unlock doesn't do anything.

[Q] Nexus 10 UnRoot Problem

I am using Nexus Root kit to unroot my device. However I totaly forgot that I rooted it and tried to update to 4.4 kitkat. I got the error and when I try to boot up, it says no command. THere is no way past that screen. So in the toolkit i flash stocked and unrooted the device, but then i have to relock it. But to do so I need usb debugging enabled which is impossible to do without being able to boot up device. Now when I boot it up it has the android figure laying down with red triangle saying nothing. What do I do?

That Android guy lying down is fastboot. In fastboot mode you give this command: fastboot oem lock. This will re lock your bootloader. I think you will lose all your data. But I cant remember if it was with unlocking or locking the bootloader.
But why do you want to lock the bootloader?

WOW, I fixed this problem 1 2 3. My nexus has been broken like this for weeks and I went to this link, went to the first step and downloaded from that link. I clicked on the file in there, it was a .exe and it ran something in command promt and the nothing happened. I thought nothing of it. Then after a few minutes I unplugged and gave up. Two seconds later I felt a vibration and the Nexus 10 set up came up and I was sooooo happy. Here is the link, I have no idea what it did, but it fixed it and my boot-loader is still unlocked!!!!! I broke up the URL so I could input the link.

Nexus 7 No Recovery/No Fastboot RESOLVED PLEASE DELETE

Hey XDA!
Got my Nexus into some trouble today. I Was running stock rooted 5.0.2, received an OTA update for 5.1. Ran the update and it sent me to my TWRP 3.0 recovery. Restarted the device and found out the update did not work, leaving me at 5.0.2. Ran the update again like a tard, took my to the stock bootloader. TWRP is now no where to be found... In fact there is no recovery to be found. When I select the recovery option in the bootloader it goes to black screen then redirects back to the bootloader. When I select the "start" option, it's reboots the device taking me to the bootloader. I have attempted a hard restart with the power button but the device hangs on the Google logo forever. I have tried to use the Nexus Root Tool but it can't help me since the device won't connect via fastboot, or ADB.
Any help is appreciated.
Hallo,
got the same problem, how did you resolve it ??? Thanks a lot ...
Same here. I can't connect to the device by no means. How did you solve your problem?

you mention it wont connect via fastboot but you can still reboot with the pwr + vol- to get menus of some kind.. ? if the screen is backlite even just a blank screen but you can see it light up theres still hope. All i can say is try to reboot the device into fastboot an then try Nexus Root Toolkit an see if you can reset to Factory to restore the stock recovery partition along with reset the OS to which ever you select and start over .. Good Luck Flashing... the only way i can say your SOL is if when you plug it into your PC an it pops up with the error "Device Malfunctioned,....." then you SOL Good Luck Flashing :good:
EDIT: Sorry didnt notice it was resolved in the title..
