Can you not use the built in wifi tethering and portable hotspot? It's works fine for me and there is no charge for it if you're on unlimited data.

So you are able to use the built in hotspot app - not rooted - with unlimited data?
On VZW it normally checks your account to see if your account is provisioned for tethering. If you aren't it won't let you... That's why he is asking about the apk and setting. You can bypass the check...

That only applies to the Branded US firmware...
Because to check your plan, the phone first needs access to your carrier data, which only the carrier-specific models (the ones with their own model number and all.) have.

Turn it on and hit the home button not cancel when you get the prompt to call VZW
Hit the notifications and select Hot spot Activated Tap to Configure and change the SSID and or the security to what you want.

In another thread in the Dev section someone mentioned that after you apply the leaked 2.2 update that you would be able to use the 3G Mobile Hotspot just like Wireless Tether, without charges from VZW. Is there any truth to this?
As I understand it, you can turn the feature on, but once a client connects, it will bring them to a VZW page telling them that you need to have said feature enabled on your account.

If you have previously used this method from stock 2.1 it also carries over from any type of wipe or installing the new radio.
I currently have the tethering plan through VZW from when I had my storm. I decided to take 3G Hotspot for a quick spin.
-WPA2
-AP Mode
-15 Devices max
Are all available.
Nothing special if you're rooted and use wifitether.
I am on the new FroYo leak and I just tried this with the included "3G Mobile Hotspot" app and it didnt work. I double checked my DUN NAI, and it is set to [email protected]. I could see and connect to my hotspot, but no web pages would load. Anyone have any ideas?

If you can get wifi, download tweakker app. It will setup the APNs for you. Let us know if you get the data working.
I tried getting tweakker (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tweakker), but it says "This app is incompatible with all of your devices." I have a 3G Nexus 7 as well, so I'm surprised it's not compatible with that nor my Sprint Galaxy S4. Is there a way to get it to install? Am I looking at the wrong app? Or is there another way to change the APN settings on the S4?

Yeah, it won't let me install it either. Weird. Worked on other phones before.
Try the different options under Connections->More Networks->Roaming. Maybe the APN options are buried there somewhere. Also, see if you have "data" checked under "GSM Network" in the roaming section, that might help.
Also, in the screen that shows you the network that you are on or allows you to select a network, make sure the green button is on the host network the SIM is associated with, then press the menu button, it might give you options for the APN.
Dial ##DATA# enter your MSL hit other then LTE APN settings then add your APN.

if you can hook up to wifi dl nova or apex (its just temporaory unless you want to keep it) hold on your home screen till you get the option to add shortcut>activities>settings>APNs this will give you access to add or remove apns at will without having to mess with your msl and sprint tech support.

I have root, and it's still greyed out. It doesn't prompt for root access either. That said, I don't have a GSM SIM in right now, so maybe when I put in a third party SIM it'll be available?
I'm guessing though it requires the MSL to add though, but there's no prompt to put it in either.
EDIT: Actually, I found the exact same APN menu under ##DATA# under Other, LTE APN. However, pressing menu doesn't even have the option to add an APN, and I put my MSL in to edit. I'm hoping it just won't let me add it because I still have the Sprint LTE SIM in.

well my friend im at a loss. the problem is that i am always rooted and even when i got my sgs4 it was rooted in the first 5 minutes of ownership. i know you said you are as well but based off what i saw in your screenies it lookes like your running stock (or something that closly resembles stock) so it may be something in the stock rom thats not allowing you to change your settings. this method is how i have done it since the epic 4g days so i dont know what to tell you. mabey one of the devs here can give you a better workaround or help you unlock that edit menu cause im outta ideas. good luck :s
Sprint Galaxy S4 APNs Are Unchangeable and therefore prohibit international data use.

Update: This is a known issue on the Galaxy S4, primarily from Sprint. They have completely disabled all APN changing and editing I order to disallow data usage on any other network than their local and global roaming networks.
The only known way to fix this is to root your device which will void the warranty, stop OTA updates and software upgrades, and possibly brick your phone.
Or, you could just travel overseas and pay $500-800/ month for Sprints roaming.
And then there's the option of using your Galaxy S4 like a flop phone and just using it for SMS and phone calls.
Because even though Sprint says it's an international smartphone, it's not.. If you like to use data services that is.
Waiting for an update to fix Sprints proprietary obsessions...

I don't use custom ROM's any more as I'm happy with vanilla android and have never had a problem with it. Go into the thread for the ROM you are suing and search to see if anyone else has the same issue. Could be a conflict with the kernel you're using maybe.
I'd be willing to bet your APN is not correct. Where are you located and what carrier are you with? I just went through the same issue with my wife's phone on ATT&T Straight Talk service, it was a PITA to get data.

Hello comminity
I have a N4 using Carbon Rom and with 4G LTE active and running. Today I ran into an issue where my tethering is routing my laptop to a tmobile landing page asking me to change my plan. Anyway around this?
Interesting. I wonder how they're detecting non-mobile access.
You might try User Agent Switcher with Firefox or Chrome and then set it to a mobile user agent string. Sorry, I'd post links, but the dumb-ass forum won't let me.
The carrier is detecting that you are tethering and want you to buy the tethering plan...I would stop because they will tack that extra money for the tethering onto your bill if you don't buy the plan. I am unaware of a way around it
Write a new APN . which will eliminate the hidden settings in the stock APN. Look in the gs3 forum for ways around teather detection. Then apply it to your nexus. IT WORKS. I just LTE tethered a lot last 2 days while out of town. Convert this app 2 a system app and write new apn with it.

Before Starting Make Sure You Have A Copy Of Your Internet Settings. (Everything in APN Settings)
Go to the Data Menu by entering ##DATA#
Select the APN Settings & Select Edit (Enter MSL)
Tap Each APN Separately (Select Edit & Enter MSL) & DELETE APNs (By Selecting The 3 Dots To The Right)
**You won't be able to delete ota apn but that's fine.
**Now you should have no internet!!!
Go To Regular Settings Then Select (More, Mobile Networks, Access Point Names) & Add APN Manually. **Adding "default, mms, supl, dun" under APN TYPE
**Put in all the correct settings the first time before saving APN. YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO GO BACK & EDIT APN AFTER IT'S SAVE. (The only way to correct the APN once saving it is to start at step one. Yes starting all over.)

How did you go about unlocking native wifi tethering with MSL code?
I could not add the "Dun" to the apn for it to work even with my MSL code it was grayed out.
PLease! Please! share how you managed it.
Thanks

I'm not sure why mines have it.... Have you tried the old method from the G5, do you have debugging on?

I don't think it's anything special because it's everywhere... It's crazy if you don't have that option.
I thought i was going MAD..but im not ...see screen shot
I did not know there was a way to do it on the G5.
I only knew methods for G2 G3 ill jump back to the G5 forums and search.
And yes i have all great setting on dev mode ,unknow sources..usb debug..etc

Much thanks
i was finally able to get the APN option to show up.
Here is what i did ..
Called sprint and asked to get my Phone UICC unlocked. I explained needed it to be able to use my phone abroad with other carries. (I have business trip in two weeks.)
This request takes two to three business days to get this through their system and your account has to be in good standing.
Then today i did ##72786# which resets provisioning parameters... Now the APN menu is available.
Now that the settings are available to me. I did try your method posetd but got no LTE data after all was said and done.
So i do have a few questions for you if you can still assist.
1. Where/did you get the full APN settings from ..on my phone it will not display it.(mms address ip etc..)
2. on my phone for LTE its using the IMS APN can you share your IMS APN settings with me?
much thanks once again.

I deleted the IMS, the only thing that I kept was ota. And then add the Internet APN manually. Yours might be r.ispsn.... And it's in the ##DATA Menu.... MMSC

Just glad I could help... Had no ideal that the phone had to be UICC unlocked.... I guess they did that when I brought the phone. :good:
