Just purchased the unlocked version of the S8. I'm able to get an LTE connection just fine, but I've yet to establish a 3G connection in places that I can on the Verizon version of the S8. Has anyone on Verizon, been able to get a 3G connection on the unlocked version? To be clear, SM-G950U1 is the unlocked Snapdragon US variant, that just started shipping on 5/27, not the unlocked international exynos variant.

Make sure network is LTE/CDMA in mobile settings instead of Global.
Are you able to get VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling?

I forgot to mention that I'd already tried LTE/CDMA.
Yes on VoLTE, no on Wi-Fi calling. See screenshot.
Where did you purchase this? Best Buy by any chance?
Also, have you tried calling into Verizon to see if they can activate anything on their end? The phone should support their CDMA.

Is there an advanced calling menu in the settings?
What happens when you go into a VZW LTE dead zone? Does it drop to 1x.
I actually try to set my phone to LTE only to conserve battery.

No, there is not. In fact, the locations of settings within the settings menus are laid out completely different. There is an advanced menu, and within that menu, the only thing phone related is an option to "identify spam," which is a replacement for Verizon's Caller ID service, only it's native to the S8 and doesn't cost anything. It appears that it's the "hiya" app, baked into the phone.
I have not had an opportunity to visit an LTE dead zone. However, in the past, when I have exited my parking garage or elevator (where I've dropped coverage) my phone's typically show a 3G connection first, and then moments later they will then show a 4G connection. With this phone, it takes longer to connect, and when it does, it connects to 4G, bypassing the 3G part of the process I described. That's what brought me here.
That said, I think I've answered my question:
According to Samsung's website the US variant of the unlocked S8 supports these bands/frequencies:
Network
Frequencies and Data Type
B1(2100), B2(1900), B3(1800), B4(AWS), B5(850), B7(2600), B8(900), B12(700), B13(700), B17(700), B18(800), B19(800), B20(800), B25(1900), B26(800), B28(700), B29(700), B30(2300), B66(AWS-3)
According to Wikipedia, Verizon operates it's 2G/3G network over B0(850) and B1(1900). Of all the bands Samsung listed, I believe the Verizon ones are all LTE.
So, I guess the answer is that the unlocked S8 does not support Verizon's 2G/3G network, and I better hope that I don't end up in an area where Verizon only offers 3G. HTC's new U11 is the same way.

Direct from Samsung. I haven't, but my understanding is that you're on your own when it comes to unlocked devices. I don't think it does support CDMA, now that I've researched it more. See prior post explaining why.

I've seen your explanation, and it's very logical. The only problem is it directly contradicts what the back of a 955U1 box says - "Wireless voice, data, and messaging services compatible with most major U.S. GSM and CDMA networks." It also contradicts how Samsung did the S7/S7 Edge, being compatible with all four networks in the U.S.
Again, I'm not saying your wrong, but given that the G955U is the model used on all U.S. carriers and has full band compatibility, it just doesn't make sense that Samsung would do this. And yes, I know, Samsung doesn't have to make sense...

The band types you listed are only for LTE. Band numbers for GSM, And CDMA are different.
Try the dialer codes to see what RF bands are enabled. Dial *#2263# in the phone dialer to get the menu. Dialing *#0011# will give you current status of Cell radio.
I'm certain the phone has the required radios and antenna to support all Carrier network cell types but whether it's enabled is another story.

I didn't even see that text on the box until you pointed it out. That definitely implies that it should work, unless the CDMA support is limited to Sprint.

Do those dialer codes work for you? I can't get them to work on neither the Verizon SM-G950U nor the unlocked U1 that I have.
And yes, that's what my advanced calling menu on my Verizon S8 looks like as well. The unlocked version doesn't have that. Only an option to turn on VoLTE. No Video nor WiFi calling. Also, there's no visual voicemail, which sucks.
The codes do not work for me on my VZW phone., but works on my TMO phone.
I'm wondering if it's SIM dependent.

Curious.... What are people going to do if they get the phone on TMobile and it has no volte? Essential won't tell us so who knows
I thought this was already stated that it would work with all carriers including Tmobile
Yes but that doesn't mean it will support volte, HD or evs
I’m pretty sure it was asked directly if the phone would work with those features and they said if the service supports it then it will work as intended. The only questionable thing was some sprint uses which I forget what it was.
well, my Mi Note 2 supports VoLTE so I have no reason to think that this device will not work accordingly.

For wi-fi calling I just went to an area with wi-fi but no cell signal and confirmed I was able to make a call with it turned on. For VoLTE I just checked that the data didn't drop to 3G or EDGE when I made a call. And for HD Voice I just called another T-Mobile phone and it'll say "HD" next to the call timer if it's an HD Voice call.
Wifi calling turned on today on my phone after not working the past 3 days.

They both work for me. In Dallas.
Opened the Settings app earlier and there was a suggestion at the top to turn on Wifi calling. I'm on At&t and November update.
How did you get this to work? I've been trying to days to enable this option. I pushed "adb shell settings put global wfc_ims_enabled1" but to no avail has it worked.
I am on AT&T and have tried this with both a Google Pixel XL 2 from Google and Verizon. If you could give me any details of what your setup is like so I can try to enable this I'd dearly appreciate it!

+1 how? Very curious.
a screenshot showing the actual call going over wifi is needed.
unless ATT changed their mind in the last week, WiFi calling isnt available for the Pixel 2/XL, even if the option is enabled, the account has to be provisioned, and the phone needs the proper IMS profile, ATT to this date has refused to allow it.
This is the first I've seen the option even appear. Will test some calls and report back.

Looks like it isn't up and rolling yet, but the fact that the option appears has me hopeful. At&t still doesn't say that it supports VoLTE on P2XL, but we have that working, so perhaps Wi-Fi calling is coming soon.

Here's hoping. My apartment is on the bottom floor so reception is very spotty. What has been weird though is that if I start a call when I have reception and move to a spot in my apartment where there is no cell service, the call persists. So part of me thinks me enabling Wifi Calling from ADB may have done something?

Because idiots around the US have no idea what they're talking about then they say "VoLTE on AT&T only works with AT&T-branded Android phones or iPhones". As long as a manufacturer certifies their device with AT&T, and configure their devices with the proper IMS profile for AT&T's network, VoLTE will work. Google (HTC/LG) certified the Pixel 2 / 2 XL with AT&T for VoLTE and RCS, both of which work if all criteria are met (proper SIM card, IMEI updated in billing system, options turned on), and right now, 8.1 DP1/DP2 are needed to use VoLTE on AT&T's network, as the modem/IMS configuration was updated on the phone to support it.

VoLTE is enabled in Android 8.1 for AT&T. I just flashed the final factory image and it does indeed work. You do have to verify that your sim card is properly provisioned for VoLTE. As for the WiFi calling portion of this conversation, I still cannot access the "Wi-Fi calling" setting within "Mobile network settings."

Check to make sure your sim card supports it. If it does you'll wanna call att and have a technician make sure your account is provisioned properly. Also you'll need to make sure they have the IMEI of your phone.

I just bought a Verizon Pixel 2 XL and Volte doesn't work. I'm on 8.1.0 February security patch. If yes, then look at the link 2 posts above yours.
I noticed after the last update (not the oreo update) my HD voice was not working. So I went to settings to figure out the issue and noticed my option to enable it is now greyed out. I tried installing the Oreo update and it's still greyed out. Anyone else with sprint have this issue?
Also I know it may have been asked several times before. But is VoLTE not available on the essential phone? There is an option to use LTE to enhance voice but that doesn't give me VoLTE.

How about if you're just on 4G? Turn off 5G. When I'm on a call using 4G LTE and surf web it stays on LTE and doesn't drop.down to say 4G or in the uk it'll probably be 2G or 3G if I was originally on 4G.

Mine always says 4G
Never goes to 2 or 3G. Since I got the phone.
I don't think the 3 network is capable of 2G, that was kind of its thing back in the day

App doesnt say it's active no.
This is the readout from

Says volte is provisioned but greyed out. So I think it is on but unable to turn it off.
Like I said it was on and had a visual status bar icon but doesnt on 11

Mines the same and I note your phone doesn't show the Volte icon as being active either, I don't think we've got it on because my Oneplus 7 Pro would show it

The volte slider it's in the ON position dude
As it is on yours.
As @Limeybastard has pointed out.
Can you make a call and surf the web at the same time? Don't rely on that app.

Yes but then I'd expect to be able to do that without Volte because data and voice would be separate

Yes with EU/UK Firmware and the same chipset this should be the same 3,4 & 5G on offer in theory

As long as the radios are the same then you should be good to go. I haven't cross referenced the two models .

Comical. Mines the other way around. Shows volte in status bar for both sims but that menu shows volte off. However disabling one sim then shows those options volte enabled via that menu posted. Rather confusing so to speak. However in practice volte is working.
Edit worked it out. For me, if I select voice call as "ask .." then those sliders in the 4636 menu are off.

Yes got the same after checking but being available and being used are two different things, I've still got no option for Volte and no icon showing its active
