Dell Venue or Surface Pro 2 - Windows 8 General

Last year at this time my problem was that there were no good W8 tablets, and now these seems to be 2 very good W8 tablets upcoming. Money is not an issue, I have been saving since last year for one of these guys, but I was wondering, naturally it's hard to determine given that neither the pro2 or venue aren't out, but what does everyone think about the 2 tablets right now, does anyone have a preference or idea as to which may be better?

Currently debating the same thing, but the price of the Dell Venue is the deal breaker. Essentially half the price for the same tablet, take my money.

Honestly, I prefer the look of the venue 11 pro over the surface pro 2 although I have been massively put off by dell build quality. Every dell machine I have handled has been creaky, wobbly or outright faulty, lets hope the venue changes that.
The venue has a user replaceable battery and the keyboard dock is a design I prefer utilising an actual laptop hinge rather than relying on a kickstand to prop up the screen, would be wicked if the venue had the kickstand too though for when without a keyboard but thats just me wanting one rather than me saying they should have added one. The bay trail option is rather attractive too, £349 entry price for what I presume would be bay trail and no keyboard. Going right upto i5 with 8gb of ram (appears they are using the exact same chip as the surface pro 2 and with 8gb of ram they would essentially become the same device). If someone could assure me of the venue's quality that would probably be the device I went for.
Looks like about £210 for the 8" dell tablet. I am more interested in the 8" tablets right now than the 10 (or in case of venue 11). I have a 13" laptop and can't justify having 2 windows devices which are really quite similar in size. I'm keeping an eye on the 8" windows tablet market, would prefer 7 still but thats just me being picky. Looking to replace my phone first though and don't have the money for buying tablets too.
I think asus and lenovo are supposed to be announcing devices soon too.

Do we know the price of their i5 model yet?

Surface pro 2 all the way. The only dell that interests me is the 8in. Venue pro. Surface pro 2 and the pro 1 still has other new devices beat. Quality wise.

Have you ever used any of their business-class models? The Latitude XT (later replaced by Dell with an XT2) I got from them years ago was drastically better quality than any of the home-class models I've ever gotten from Dell... and customer support was better on the business end as well.
Still, I'd pick the Surface Pro over a Dell tablet any day. With the Surface, you're pretty much guaranteed that Microsoft will keep supporting the tablet with driver updates and the like. With Dell, it's always (in my experience) been a crap shoot whether they would continue updating drivers for new operating systems... so while the Dell might work great with 8.1 now, who knows what will happen if 8.2 changes driver requirements a year down the line.
If there was a Venue Pro at around 6-7 inches though, I'd seriously consider using that to replace my cell phone... it just would still be paired with a Surface.

I've been going back and forth between the two and I think the Dell is going to win unless something else is announced soon.
Sp 2 has slightly better i5 but the dell is still going to top sp1 and will gain battery life/run cooler in the process
The magnesium build of the sp2 is offset by dells removable battery and serviceable hardware.
The keyboard doc is much better then microsofts power cover which relies on the kickstand for support plus is half the price.
Venue has display port AND hdmi port on the tablet.
sp2 does have wacom but synaptics is looking pretty good. For an artist or design pro this of course could be a deal breaker.
Sp2 panel may be higher quality not sure... they both look good and venue is slightly larger.
Hard to say about firmware/driver updates... probably depends on how many they sell. Honestly in a year I'll be itching for the next gen haswell anyway.

I will get the Venue 8 Pro. It is a perfect device.for work. Digital ink plus outlook, office, and one note. The only think I can concerned about us the pen technology they selected. I would have preferred Wacom to be compatible with my Samsung spens

Nope. The £349 price Dell has said is for the configuration with an Atom CPU. We still have to see the price for the config. with an Intel i5.

Asus already anounced the tablet-PCs they will sell this year, the Transformer Book T100 (with Atom CPU), the Transformer Book Trio (Android tablet + WIndows dock) and the Transformer Book T300 (same hardware as the Surface Pro 2 but without stylus support).

November 7th the Venue Pro 11 will be available on UK, we'll have to wait until then to see the prices of the different configs on Dell's web.

I presume that the Venue11 is an 11" device, personally, and I know its only an inch, that extra one mackes it a pita to hold, I used to have one of the Samsung 11" tabs last year and it was too big..

Does anyone have an idea about the Venue pen technology?

I think I have read that the pen technology of the two Venue is from Synaptics, not from Wacom. Try to look on Youtube for videos where they show the device and hope to hear what technology it has.

In the announcement they said that the venue 8 is using synaptics, I would assume that the 11 also uses synaptics.

Get the nexus 7 now or wait for surface?

Hey guys,
I was about to pull the trigger today and buy a nexus 7 but with recent news about the surface having a potential price point of $199, it got me thinking.
I'm just wondering if i should get the nexus 7 or wait until more info is revealed regarding the surface. For all we know, it could turn into another playbook with lack of apps and what not but im still not sure.
If you guys have any advice, it would be really appreciated!
Thanks!
I would say if you can wait till October then good, Ipad mini along with Surface might be out too and you can then decide.
windows on a tablet? No way!
I'd wait for the surface or ipad mini and then reevaluate if Asus has worked out the hardware issues they are having. I'd also decide if you want a 7 inch tablet or a 10 inch tablet. They are two different devices IMHO. I have an iPad 2 and plan on getting either the nexus 7 if hardware issues and quality improves or maybe even the iPad mini if it is real. I prefer the nexus 7, but Asus is making it tough for me to consider purchasing. I had the transformer prime when it was first released and Asus treated me and other customers like dirt. I ended up returning it, next bought the acer a200, and finally settled on the iPad 2. I think Asus makes great motherboards and laptops, but my experience with tablets is poor. Good luck with whatever you decide.
The other thing to consider is Windows on a tablet is a new operating system. It took a long time for android to have a decent selection of tablet apps, it might take a long time for there to be a decent selection there too. If you've tried the RTM or read the reviews the biggest complaint is the lack of apps in the store, just like it was when android was first available on tablets.
Personally I'm going to wait to see how quickly the app store fills up before deciding. I'll probably install windows 8 on my desktop when its available but as a tablet OS i'll wait a while.
My 2 pennies. The Nexus is a great tablet that's certain. Its price point has made thousands if not millions of people finally get a tablet. I was so impressed that I bought two instead of having just one iPad to share between the wife and I. Personally I have no regrets. It does everything I wanted from a tablet and can be modded to the extreme. And dev has only just started.
There is no question that the Nexus tablet has put the wind up other manufacturers. Price and performance are going to become a battleground with every tablet hardware producer.
My prediction is the iPad mini should it even exist will be comparable in spec to a cut down iPad 2. The resolution will not be as good as the Nexus and I can see the back camera getting cut too. Even after that it still won't be as cheap as a Nexus. Apple still have iPod touches to sell.
As for the Surface. It's completely untested, mostly unseen and there will be so little development for it it will make the Windows 7 Phone marketplace seem thriving. It intrigues me but I think its lack of focus will be its undoing. Hardware is only as good as the software it runs and developers are going to wonder who it's aimed at.
Should I be wrong I would happily upgrade and pass my Nexus onto a relative that would eat up its ease of use and for factor. Considering it cost me half what an iPad would have I can afford to upgrade.

Get the N7 right now. In the fall if the Surface is what you want you won't have any problems selling your N7 at all...
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Apple is obsessed with profit, so rest assured an iPad mini will either be awesome but have Apple's idiotically high price tag, or it will be very sub-par and still have Apple's idiotic price. If money is no object, then there you go, you get the expensive but ultimately limited iPad mini.
Surface...if/when it comes out, you might have a nice tablet, but as others have said, it will have limits in the app world. It could take months to years before its a great solution. If the ::ahem:: "success" of Windows Phone is an indicator then you might be waiting a long time to do what you want/need to do with Surface. By the time Surface even becomes worth it, it might be time to upgrade what you buy today anyway.
So...get the N7 and start enjoying now...

What do they say? A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush. Get the nexus now and don't wait for something that might fly along later on.
ive got a nexus 7, and im kinda intrigued by the surface as well. if its $199, i might just buy one anyway and use it as my windows laptop.
however, it really depends on how well optimised it is. from my understanding, windows 8 RT is supposed to bridge the gap between desktop and mobile versions of windows. however, windows 7 desktop is 33gb for 32bit and 20gb for 64bit, so im hoping windows 8 RT doesnt use anywhere near as much storage space to provide the same desktop experience.
i did consider sticking with just a nexus 7, but one of the apps i use regularly for my profession hasnt been updated on android for nearly 6 months, and i cant afford to be that far behind. being able to use a windows version (i'll probably be buying the x86 version of the surface) would be more convenient.
the only thing i dont like is that windows 8 RT only allows internet explorer to have full functionality, all other browsers operate with reduced functionality. dunno about you guys, but the only time i've ever used internet explorer over the last 6 years or so was to download a different browser like firefox or chrome.
also if you root and tweak the N7 your getting a 1.8ghz quad core with a 650mhz 12 core gpu for 250$... WINNING
windows rt i'm not really interested in. later on when they release the true windows 8 tablet i'll think about it as a replacement for my ultra chitty pavilion 17in dv7 laptop. i'm going to get much joy from smashing this hunk of junk from hp. windows is a dino and the environment is changing.
windows blue screened to many people.

It also depends on what your weighting of various features are. Obviously running native MS Office and Outlook is a huge benefit as is SharePoint access and OneNote. At the end of the day it's still a Windows PC which, unless things change dramatically, aren't very good consumption devices. I replaced my HTPC with Google TV's for the simplicity and broader content support. If you use your tablet for consumption in the 30% and below range W8 is probably a better choice. I'm probably about 60% consumption 40% productivity and am fine with Android for now. And it's not like you have to buy a W8 Pro device on the day they come out or lose the opportunity. Having suffered through V1 of plenty of h/w and s/w there's something to be said for letting others go first. And here’s hoping that with the introduction of a Windows-based version of S-Note that Samsung comes up with a way of sharing what’s created with Android S-Note with Windows-PC’s.

People use common sense. If it is going to have an Intel CPU, a larger HD screen and pen input it is going to cost MUCH more. Those components aren't free.
If a tablet had the same components as a $1000 ultrabook and includes pen input it is going to cost what an ultrabook costs. It won't be $500.

Well, I was peeking too, BUT I have to see it, feel it, touch it before I would consider a FULL Win8 Tab (NOT RT-version which does not have any benefit over Android).
It has to endure easily 12 hours like my N10.1 and has to perfom in the same smoothness and reliability.
I am an "early adopter" but with Win8 I have to read a lot of reports and see a lot of hardware tests before it convince me to buy a Win8-slate.
It is so much at the beginning, will be full of bugs and promises of added functionality in the FUTURE that I will wait for the official "Surface"-Tab and then compare to the Win8-Sammy-Tab and then maybe in one year decide upon a Win8-Tablet when "Surface 2" will be issued.
Yes, I love my Note i-717 and 10.1. i will be waiting for the livestreams that stat in 2.5 hrs for the Note 2.
I did use my note 10.1 in class yday9marketing) and the professor mention apple and he made me show the whole class the note and I explain how the patent messed up our S-Memo! I did copy the part of the sylabus where it states to write your preferend name, occupation and picture, then took one with my FFC and sent it to him during class. So yes I love it.
The car analogy is a good one. I have an 04 Q45 premium(had an 03 as well, RIP) and it still holds it own vs alot of newer cars. Do i sometimes desire a 7 series? yes, but i dont have 750Il money..Andi dont driver people around for a living(I have reclining rear seats). But i do use this device for my work email as well. It would be very impressive when i go to all the major banks during pricing etc and just whip out my Note and mark up the pdf that takes them forever to print, hand out, then revise to print out again. I would love to do some modeling in excel as well, Polaris seems a bit too clunky to do it seriously.
The thing is people like myself are the first to actually be productive with a device other than a BB. Its scary to those around who dont understand, and needs flawless execution or people wont see the point. My boss litterally was upset that i have my work email on my note, cuz they also gave me a BB. But im in a very small group that is testing out the system.
I will probally keep the note 10.1 and try and convice them to buy me the Series 5 for work. have to show its worth first though. Hopefully once the Wifi in the building is up, people will see a tablet can be much more than an iPad. Time will tell.
Well, this is the Windows 8 tablet that I will be purchasing.
With Clovertrail SoC (yes, it is Atom processor)... with faster + better GPU over ARM SoC atm (http://androidandme.com/2012/08/sma...e-fastest-android-phone-next-month-in-london/).... although, I have to see how S4 Pro looks like.... this should be a winner. The battery life should be on par with ARM counterparts (I doubt it will be better but it should compete in the department).
Keyboard + S-Pen (the same one as Galaxy Note 10.1).... this seems like a winner to me... out of all W8 tablets so far. Now.. the main question is the price... it won't be as cheap as ARM Android tablets but it shouldn't cost more than Ultrabooks with i5+ in it....
As for anything WinRT (unless Surface is released at the rumored $200 price)... it should be avoided at all cost when it launches.
Edit: Nvm.. they did announce the price... $649 for 64g SSD + 2gb RAM.... $749 with keyboard...
So, $50 cheaper than 64gb iPad.. & $100 more over 32gb Galaxy Note 10.1

Lol, expected to be on 9hr+ battery life on single charge. See how it goes once it gets released.....
Otherwise, FULL OS with x86..... & Galaxy Note 10.1 apps..... (and if you really think about it.. if Note 10.1 has 64gb.. it will only be $50 more...)
Only disappointment from IFA so far... lack of Samsung's A15 dual-core SoC. I was expecting Samsung's WinRT tab to be on A15 SoC.. but bleh.. it is on S4 dual-core. Not that I was going to purchase the A15 WinRT tab.... but... yea, was hoping to see that SoC to make a presence in some form of h/w.
There is some serious potential here. If this has a port for an external monitor and other peripherals (aka laptop replacement), then I just might have to return my Note. That $700 price tag is gonna sting though, $1K if I get series 7 with 128GB.

As far as I understand.. it does....
Also comes with USB 3.0 support I believe (at least on the keyboard dock.. i think)...
With $650 as the base price for 64gb SSD model ... I think we can expect other OEMs to release their W8 tablets around $550 to $600 range (don't think any of them will be priced higher over Samsung or Sony for that matter).... This is the price range I expected for the Clovertrail tablets & it's a great value. Now.. since none of us have one in hand.. we won't know how it will actually perform in the real world yet... but that's serious potential with great value.
As for WinRT tablets.... I should expect a $400 price range... but with W8 Clovertrail/Trinity tablets being around $550 to $650 range... & with very very limited ecosystem... I don't expect that to do well at all.
Btw, I don't think Series 7 or any other i5+ W8 tablets are worth the money. Cost too much... & for that.. to do serious work, you really need a bigger screen. Series 7 & other Intel i5+ tablets also have "fan" included with crap battery life (will weight just as much as ultrabook with keyboard dock).... not much benefit over Ultrabooks. Better to purchase Ultrabooks over i5+ W8 tablets.... W8 Ultrabooks will come in Touchscreen, Discrete GPU, much more storage... & can expand the RAM if needed (cheaper too).
I think the Series 5 throws a HUGE wrench into the works.
What's the point in a Note 10.1, when for a few dollars more I can have the same WACOM stylus input on a Windows machine that gets the same battery life and has 100% MS Office compatibility?
I purchased the Note 10.1 as an e-ink device, to go paperless. This device works, but I am always having to take extra steps to get documents synced to the cloud. I want an all-in-one solution that is seemless, integrated with MS Word, and doesn't cost $1k+.
What advantage does the Note 10.1 have over this new Series 5 other than a $150.00 cheaper pricepoint?
I hope the user experience isn't too terrible with the Atom CPU like it was with netbooks. Unless I specifically need x86 compatibility I'm not too excited about returning to the bloat, unreliability, poor user experience, relatively mediocre battery life, heat output, high maintenance, etc. of Windows. Plus, I use Google Voice for SMS and calls so the GN 10.1 is constantly running in low power with great battery life. My Thinkpad with 8-cell high capacity battery seems to drain a lot faster just being in hibernate doing absolutely nothing.
It sounds good, but I can guarantee the price will make it non-competitive with the Note 10.1. Same with the Surface tabs when they come, I can practically guarantee the Surface Pro (the only model that can really compete with the N8013) will be $700-1000.
I was strongly considering a Surface tablet before jumping on the Note 10.1 ship but I'm more than happy with the N8013, it does everything I need it to do and nothing more and nothing less. Anything more, I have my laptop. Anything less and I'd have just bought an iPad again.

So Where Are The Windows 8 Tablets?

In the US, can you actually buy Windows 8 tablets? Only tablets I see in stock are Surface (online only) and Asus Vivo Tab...both are RT.
There is one atom tablet released so far, Samsung Ativ, but looks like Samsung has stopped the shipments as no store has received any sick in weeks.
I'd think companies would've been ready to release their tablets for Windows 8.

The $700 is for the version with the pen. $600 is expensive for a 64 gig Tegra 3 tablet, $700 for a new version of Atom that outperforms it and also has a Wacom pen isn't that bad.
It runs all your x86 apps, and you get the ThinkPad build quality.

The "ThinkPad build quality" is suspect, the Android Thinkpad was horribly built, check out their forums with all the complaints.

I did the same earlier this year - but cannot recommend it anymore. It was one of the best options at the time... but not now!
-No snapping of apps due to low resolution
-Poor battery
-Hot and loud
-Atrocious build quality (volume rocker no longer works)
-Fiddly driver installation for gyro (for rotating your screen)
-Terrible keyboard dock
-The whole device feels very plasticy and cheap
-Weak processor often cannot play 720p .mkvs without unacceptable skipping/lag
-Heavy and thick
-Touch screen will gain permanent "push" marks on it
I've had a blast with it over the year, from consumer preview all the way to RTM, but the device certainly won't last. I'm looking to upgrade, possibly to the Surface Pro.
Anyway, I've made a little comparison of tablets on my OneNote, and here's a view-only link to the table:
https://skydrive.live.com/redir?page=view&resid=5304A0F127ADA4A1!6466&authkey=!APoZUZMhsksoqf0
I think you'll need a Microsoft account to view it, but you should already have that if you're planning on having a Windows 8 device. The table mostly has tablets with 10.6-11.6" screens. Details are scarce for the 10.1" ones since I'm not too interested in them.

Dell Venue 11 Pro vs HP Omni 10 tablet

Hello,
Does anybody have any input or on hand use of each tablet to make a fair comparison or opinions?
Thanks.
Well, I'm asking the same question, it's hard to say...
Same processor, memory et resolution, battery life...
But the venue 11 pro has bigger screen (10'8 vs 10'1), SSD (64gb vs 32), NFC and better accessories (but expensive...)
In France, the HP Omni is $100 less than the Venue...I don't know wich one to choose either
I'm going to check the HP in a store, it's available since yesterday...Maybe I'll come back with it
please report here your impressions about omni 10 if you can see in store...i preordered on amazon.it (399 euro) but i'm not sure if buy this or the asus t100. BTW both are not available in italy at now (as the venue 11)
So I saw the HP Omni 10 and it looks good, looks solid.
Everything looked smooth. the 2gb memory worries me a little but even the Venue has only 2gb...
The screen brightness was at the max and it doesn't felt that way... maybe the store was super bright, it don't know...not a big deal I guess...
I will go back this afternoon and buy it...
In France the Venue is actually around 600 euros with taxes and shipping...The Omni is 400 euros...so I've made my choice...
I think at this price you can't have better... the T100 does have a keyboard but looks much cheaper and the omni has a better processor and is full hd (1920/1200 actually) !
My only concern will be to find a decent cover/case with - if possible - a keyboard...the galaxy note 10.1 has similar build maybe it can work with its accessories...
how do you feel the screen comparing to other tablets (color, brightness)? i.e. micosoft surface or ipad? what about viewing angles and the matt finish?
wiewing angles are good, it's no retina but it's good. I'm not blown away but it's good (for the price)
venue 11, omini 10 and T100 are good value but looks crap .Nokia 2520 and surface 2 looks awesome but runs a crap os.

have you bought the 32gb version? how much free space do you have?

So I saw the HP Omni 10 and it looks good, looks solid.
Everything looked smooth. the 2gb memory worries me a little but even the Venue has only 2gb...
The screen brightness was at the max and it doesn't felt that way... maybe the store was super bright, it don't know...not a big deal I guess...

If its not too much trouble, please post pics/video/review of the HP OMNI 10. Would be interested in initial impressions of performance.
i'm also really interested in having more information about this tablet, please share your experience...
just to let everyone know, my order of dell venue pro 11 shipped and will get it tomorrow
Can either of these tablets output DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD audio?

Oh man. Thanks. All I did is reply with quote and that's what it linked
I've had the omni10 for a couple days now. I am enjoying it. I am coming from a surface rt.
Screen - Crisp and bright. I have no complaints other than blacks could be darker but its not amoled so my expectations are just off I guess. Viewing angles are nice. Not the best ever but colors don't get washed out. The issue is the reflections on the screen if in a bright room. There is no light creeping from the corners of the screen like the surface rt.
Memory - I've had no issue. I have run mail, calendar, games in the background, had a vpn running and Firefox with multiple tabs without issue.
Weight and feel - its a soft plastic, similar to venue pro 8 but without the pattern. It does not collect fingerprints and feels good, not slippery which is good for a tablet. I picked up my iPad and weight is comparable when in the smart case. Maybe Omni is a little lighter and thinner (when iPad is in the case).
Touch is responsive. It might be useful to get a stylus though. Working in desktop mode with touch sometimes registers incorrect touches or you have to touch multiple times. Ive only noticed this in desktop mode.
Speed - its zippy when opening apps. Night and day from coming from a surface rt. It takes a while to install non metro apps though. I think this has something to do with the hard drive.
Bonus - I really like that HP put the recovery on an 8gb flash drive. It leaves you with space and removes you having to manually move recovery to your own flash drive like people buying the vp8. I thought it was a thoughtful thing by HP.
Heat - gets a little hot just on the HP logo on the back. Other than that it runs comfortable.
Lastly, I've seen some accessories for the Omni 10. I think there is a case and dock. Both are not as good as other ones for baytrail tablets but I dont mind. I really like this has micro hdmi, micro USB and a power connector. It allows me to use peripherals while charging and connect to my hd monitor without hacking or any problems.

What do you think of Samsung's new tablets ?

Samsung just released their new tablets that 8 inch looks interesting to me depends on price however. How does it compare to gpad for you ?

Makes me question my gpad purchase but for the specs it might cost a lot more.

I'm still happy with my purchase and the deal I got on it ($259 USD via Newegg). The Samsung Pro 8.4 is the only one that makes me blink. Faster chip, good. Marginally larger battery to deal with the screen, bad. Touchwiz, higher resolution screen, meh. The G Pad, for its meager shortcomings, offers a heckuva lot of bang for the buck, at the price I got it anyway. Not regretting it!

Lol yeah I missed that deal I live in New jersey so payed tax $300 so if it's around $300 -$350 I would be all for it lol. My gpad comes tomorrow so well see I guess. It should have pretty good development support and accessories.

I feel the same. The 8.4 inch display model is pretty sweet.. Pricing may be a bit higher, so again.. I wouldn't buy it just cause of that. And the 3 hardware buttons on the front is a no go. It's old and I don't like it as much as having a blank screen where it's just me and the screen/movie/book.. The over all design looks good ol' fashion Samsung. Looks sturdy and has kindof a Galaxy S2 feel to it. The S2 was the best mobile phone I've ever had. Damn a lot of stuff happened back then. But yeah, looks like a decent tablet. But I think I'll be quite happy with the G Pad still, since it does have what I'm looking for in a nice, cheap package and decent build quality.

The Samsung Exynos 5 Octa CPU is a new gen processor which samsung tries to make it use all eight cores at once. If a tablet with that chip comes out it will surely be very powerful and definitely better than gpad.
As long as Samsung uses a home button i will never buy again.I'm very happy with the pad.
The new Touch Wiz looks really awful. I don't even know what they're thinking. It's like they want it to work and look like Windows 8 but don't want to use Windows 8. Personally I wouldn't touch the new tabs with a 10 foot pole.

They can't help them self's.They always need to add a little from other oem's
I am an owner of note 10.1 2012 ..... I am looking up to
Change my tab as there is no updates for it at all ... Till now it is on version 4.1.2 and it is 100% guaranteed now after these pro tablets unveiled there will be no updates for the older devices ... I wont buy any of these new pro tablets because of the price firstly and in the future they will be thrown to the dust like my note 10.1 now ..... Also i am thinking of getting lg g pad 8.3 but no software updates like my current note and lack of dev support keeps me away
I'd be very surprised if the 8.4 was less than $399. I'm sure Samsung considers it to be fully equivalent to the newest iPad mini. Samsung used to compete on price but no more. When I bought my first plasma TV in 2007 Samsung was a much better deal than Panasonic or Pioneer. When it came time to buy another one last year I thought Samsung was too expensive and bought an LG I'm very happy with.

If they're "too perfect to root", no thanks.

Quite simply, I am going to switch to a Tab Pro 8.4 as soon as it is available.
It has a way better display, it has NFC (which I miss), it's way more powerful (G Pad is pretty slow), it has a polycarbonate back (I dislike the faux leather, I would much rather have a rubber back like the Nexus 7 2013 or the old Samsung HyperGlaze but anything is WAY, WAY better than effing METAL!!!!) and the Samsung one is the best version of Android around (MultiWindow *alone* would do it for me).
I can't wait to get my hands on it.
P.S. Actually, the ONLY reason I am interested in mid-sized tablets (8"/8.5") is WEIGHT.
Anything beyond 350/400 grams is simply too heavy to be ergonomic and truly comfortable for extended use.
The new Samsung Tab Pro 10.1" is 469grams and I am planning on trying it out with the intention of switching back to a 10.1"...
Ideally, my perfect tablet would be something like the Note Pro 12.2" but would weigh no more than 400 grams with an all-day battery life... (which is, of course, not technically possible. YET).

Pretty Slow? Try CM 11, Stock is slow. Switching from G Pad to Notepro 8.4 seems useless to me.
I am sort of disappointed that the G Pad is no longer the best 8 incher but it's still pretty great so its fine...
I doubt I will bite. I like my LG 8.3 GPE a lot. Samsung does this to me every year: announce something that captures my imagination, I'm intrigued, I convince myself it will be at a palatable price point, and then finally delivers something I consider too expensive and doesn't hit the sweet spot for my tastes.
I do own a Galaxy Note 10.1, and I love it. But the 2014 edition left me a bit cold.
I doubt I will dip into these waters again, probably just upgrading to a new Nexus 10 when the timing feels right.
I'm very happy with my G Pad and won't switch. If the Samsung 8.4 was available a couple of weeks ago at a competitive price I would have taken it, simply due to previous experience with both LG and Samsung phones. I like the idea of hard buttons on the bezel - means more screen space. There will also be more development on the Samsung tablets.

The G Pad with CM11 or the G Pad GPE are surely faster but you would have to give up, among other things, Knock On, the IR Remote and full SDcard support and those are huge deal breakers for me.
True, LG's ROM is most certainly slower and laggier than stock Android but it's also way more feature complete (which is probably also *why* is slower...). Features that I do use.
Besides the ones just mentioned, there are dozens of things like Quickmemo, the overlay apps (QSlide), the keyboard with the numbers row, the volume and brightness sliders and on and on...

As I said: way better display, NFC, way more powerful (while being even more feature rich), polycarbonate back, Samsung SW (MultiWindow above all).
I also forgot to mention that notwithstanding pretty much identical size and weight, the display is sensibly bigger on the Tab Pro as it's not only 0.1" physically bigger but it also doesn't have virtual buttons taking up screen real estate.
So, far from "useless"... The money I will lose selling the G Pad and buying the Tab Pro is really a very small price to pay for such a big upgrade.
P.S. I am not dissing my G Pad, still like it a lot and still think it's the overall best mid-size tablet on the market right now.
I have no intentions of switching as i really love this lg. I also suspect that these new Pro models will not be cheap. For my uses the lg is plenty fast and smooth. And since a tablet is just entertainment for me, there is only so much any tablet is worth and i bet these new Samsung tablets will exceed that price.

What Rom will it come with? I've learned to only buy with Qualcomm cpus because they get the best long-term support. There's a chance that the Qualcomm ones are only for lte support....

Great to hear you're not dissinf the G Pad!
You said switching to a notepro 8.4 would be a small price to pay, but you have no idea how much its going to cost. I bet at least 400.
BTW, knock on works just fine on CM 11. IR support is missing, haven't tried a SD card. Is it not going to work? Oh, and be sure the new bloated "pro" touchwiz will be slower than the lg rom.
