I've received a brand new N4 about a month or so ago and I've been struggling to have it RMA'ed since then because the screen has clearly visible plaid effect. I don't have a camera to capture the defect with the screen fully on, but here's how it looks thru the Nexus 7 camera with the screen off.

Its completely normal. It wont affect viewing when the screen is on. Youll also see some diamond like dots when in bright sunlight.
Agreed. This is normal. You're seeing the digitiser grid.

This is correct. The digitizer it the apparatus that detects your finger touches.
The reason you can see it more prominently than on other phones is because it is fused to the glass.
This is not a defect. Just the way the phone is designed.
It's like saying the phone is defective because the glass screen reflects the sun into my eyes
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Well, I can actually see the grid when the screen is on.
And none of my friends' nexi 4 have the digitizer so visible. Howcome the nexi 4 are so different from one another?
Its definitely normal. The reason you're seeing it is because of LG's "zero gap" technology.

I can also see the grid when the screen is on. If you look hard enough.
I can't explain why it looks less obvious on your friends n4 but yours looks exactly how mine and my friends n4s look.
I don't know what you are looking for by keeping this going but this issue is certainly not a defect

I broke my AMOLED screen while skiing. It is replaceable and a lot cheaper than buying a new phone. You can find new screens on ebay for $70-$80 usually. Make sure you find out whether you have an AMOLED or SLCD so you can get the right screen. Google can help you determine that.

I have an AMOLED screen but i dont wish it to replace. I'm looking for replacement between a Galaxy Nexus or a White Skyrocket for $200. My Nexus One still works. I still use it with the broken screen to call my boyfriend (I'm female), i just memorized how to get into the favorites contacts and call, hehe but just him. It's useless screen is now completely black and non existant.
I was charging it and it suddenly fall down into the floor, as usual. It was not a very hard hit per se, but must be the angle.

I read somewhere that this is a residual issue caused by the bonding glue they use t to attach the glass, they should fade as the glue dries, but keep any eye on it and nuke 'em if it doesn't!
Yeh galaxy nexus has a similar thing its the amoled display some of the pixals are not turning fully of, I think that was the conclusion .
But only noticeable in very dark room with the screen black and when your eyes adjust. Could be wrong without a pic I can't say.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I think its an inherent flaw with AMOLED panels. It looks like patches of the screen do not go as dark as the rest of the screen.
Some screens are brighter than others in general though, among the same phone. This Nexus was brighter than another one I had at the same time, at both lowest and highest settings, and had less black dots on black screen, presumably because the screen was brighter overall.
Doesn't mean to say I won't check for the problem before I purchase though

Yep I have the exact same thing with my SIII but not as bad as yours. What did you do about your SIII? Did you return it? I notice it mostly on a black background whilst watching films/videos mine isn't really that noticeable on my SIII but still pretty annoying.

These are touch sensors. It's normal.
Since the N4 has thinner glass than most current phones, these dots are more visible than they are in other phones.
Edit: also some LG technology that embedded these in the glass or something. Tech jargons. But every Nexus 4 is like that. It's not a defect.
Yep, I got the same thing

Thanks everyone. This is my first upgrade after many years. Was just trying to be on the safe side :highfive:
I knew what these were when I first saw them, but I'm surprised they exist. I thought the touch sensors were part of the display on these new LG panels. No?
I think it's more to protect the glass from UV discoloration of the glass. That's why x gear live did this on their glass protector for the galaxy nexus.
I think they look cool.
I Got It Also! Its also visible when the screen is lit, but you have to find them. Is this normal? All N4 has this? Why I can't see this on my iPad, and other touch devices?

the gorilla glass 2 is thinner, its normal to see that under direct sunlight,
I'm fairly certain that these dots have something to do with the IPS display in the N4.
My Asus tf700 (transformer infinity) has these same dots, which are only visible at certain angles, with high ambient light. It is also an IPS display. I remember reading somewhere about them, but I forget what the actual purpose of these dots are.
This has been discussed many times guys...a simple search will tell you it's because of the thinner display design more specifically the digitizer.

Read some bits about AMOLED screens' problems with pixels dying or displaying ghost images of different screens etc.

I had a Galaxy S1 for a almost 2 years and had burn in. I also had an S2 for a year and a half and it also had burn in. If you like to keep your brightness up at realistic levels, it's not a matter of if, but when. How noticeable it will be will depend on you. My GF's S2 has burn in but she didn't notice it until I pointed it out to her on a white background. It appeared as a light blue line where the notification bar is. On blue backgrounds, we can see all the notification bar info, like battery meter, time, wifi icon etc.

Does anybody else have info about burn-in on the Samsung AMOLED screens? I thought that was a thing of the past?!
it was a thing of the last on plasma screens, which share a similar fate as amoled panels.if you're planning on keeping the phone that long I would suggest not buying something with amoled. You should find another phone with some sort of lcd display. Also a removable battery, as they tend to go bad after a year or so and changing it will be painless.

I suggested at least 10 my friends to buy Samsung S2 or S3. Not a single problem so far On S4 we should see improved AMOLED.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
The uneven subpixel degradation starts at the second you start using the phone. Everyone who claims they don't suffer from it hasn't noticed it just yet. The most problematic was the black statusbar actually but since Samsung made it transparant and grey it shouldn't really be noticeable anymore. Perhaps after 2 years of use maybe.

The sticker didn't cause that, the company probably had that logo showing on the screen and it burned in.

Incorrect, it is an issue because there are static elements of the OS like notification bar icons that eventually burn in, as well as notification bars themselves. There's a reason why they made the bar transparent on the S4, however, the info in the bar should be visible within a year and a half, especially on a blue background. It's the price to pay for this type of screen tech.

any info on her usage?
So I was unlucky enough to drop my N4 before I was able to get a case for it. I dropped it from my lap while getting out of a taxi so it wasn't a full on drop. At first I thought the only damage was cosmetic - a nick on the chrome trim on the top right corner of the phone.
However afterwards I noticed a small white/bright spot on the screen near that corner where it looks like the backlight is bleeding through. It's most notice-able when the screen is showing something white, less notice-able with colors (red, green, blue etc), and completely fine when showing black.
I've checked some info and it doesn't seem like it's a dead pixel, and just seems overall larger than a dead pixel. At the same time it doesn't seem like a lit pixel either since it's not visible on black. At the moment I'm very thankful that the phone is still very much use-able, but would like to find out what the problem is, and perhaps how intensive a repair this would involve since it is a bit annoying sometimes.
Anyone have had a similar problem or have any ideas?

Yeah I'm definitely learning to live with it. It may also not look so bad in a photo but it's still pretty noticeable when you're holding the phone in your hand - especially when I'm scrolling around and you can see this static white spot that doesn't move.
Just overall interested in what the problem is as well. I've seen dead pixels and also phones that were dropped where the screen looks completely fubar'd... but haven't been able to find any examples where the screen is like this.
RMA if it's that annoying. Assuming ur phone doesn't look too damaged that they'll say it was your fault.
I do see a few scratches on the screen. Google may not RMA for that reason. If there is another reason like a defect, use that to RMA. IML no Nexus 4 is perfect. I have RMA'd about 4 times till now with a new reason every time. Now after completely blocking my credit card, I have learned to live with an imperfect Nexus 4

I guess from the replies I should learn to live with it then. Thing is I really thought this was due to the drop, but it's also possible it was a defect that I didn't notice... I saw some N4s with the light bleed problem, but were from the edges of the screen, that's why I really thought this was due to damage.
