[Q] just rooted - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I rooter my G4 for the first time, I think all went well but I have a question. I tried to install the free version of TBU but I got a "root failed" message but other root apps work such as root explorer and setcpu. If I click on SU in my app drawer I get a message "super user must be updated" or something to that effect. I think this happened to me once before but its been so long. Not sure if I click the update option within SU or if I download the SU fixer in the play store.

Just let SU update uninstall tibu, then reinstall and see if that works. In order for tibu to work SU has to grant it permission.

So you sugest I uninstall TBU and reinstall it? I'll try that but what about the update message I get when I click on SU?

Update it then reinstall tibu

How do I update SU? This is what I'm shown when I open super user. Do I click the update button? I just do a Google search and I read that someone bricked from clicking update.

What recery do you have

How do I check? I grabbed my stock G4 and used the motochopper root method. I've read a lot of other random links were people had the same issue. I double checked other root apps I have and they don't work. I'm able to enter app but it's "read only" mode.

try this go setting>more scroll down to about phone then scroll down to build number then keep tapping it till it counts down 3-2-1 development open then hit the back button click development option thev check the usb debugging box.
---------- Post added at 10:41 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:35 PM ----------
I dont use motochopper I use root and recovery from casual where it roots and installs twrp 2501. Its my favorite because I can root and unroot as often as I like with it and Odin whenever I run into issues because I like experimenting on my phone.

Well, I already had USB debugging checked when I rooted. I unchecked it and tried updating and root apps...same result.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

ok let me first
1. what firmware are you
2. what recovery are you using
try one more thing go into recovery>advance>fix permissions and see if that allows you to update su again.

I havent installed a custom recovery. I literally rooted my phone 30 minutes ago and tried a few root apps to see if the root worked or not. Im yet to install a custom ROM or recovery.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

go to the play store and download an app called root checker run it to see if the root actually took or not

It says "device does not appear to have root access"
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

you may not have root. moto may not have done it. What firmware is the phone is it MDL or MF3
go to settings>more>about phone> then scroll down to baseband tell me what it says.

Here it is
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Your on MF3 as far as I been reading you can not root with motochopper. There is a way to root but also on MF3 you can not install a custom rom as well they are still working on it.
Go to the development section and do a little more reading or you can brick the phone rendering it useless Sorry for the bad news.

On the phone, Download z4root from google and install it, then open it and choose Perm Root, then it will install su and the Superuser app.
Hope it helps.
I tried the z4 infact thats was the way I rooted my phone the first time but after the ota update they shut down Z4root's path. I need my root back to tether (no internet at all now!)

How to remove root (un-root) device without clearing apps and data?

I have an app that refuses to run because my Nexus 7 is rooted. So I would like to remove root and keep this app installed.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Not tried it my self but on SuperSU Play description it says that if you uninstall it, you will lose root:
NOTICE: A SPECIAL PROCEDURE IS NEEDED FOR UNINSTALLATION. IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THE APP, DO *NOT* JUST UNINSTALL IT, YOU *WILL* LOSE ROOT.
I would guess that if you have Super User installed, it would do the same thing.
I tried the "temp unroot" function of the superuser app and the app still recognized the root and refused to run.
I will try un-installing superuser now. Thanks for the idea, I will report back.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Some applications I believe look for the superuser application by name. So if it sees "superuser.apk" on the system it won't run. However, I know some in the past were able to be worked around by renaming the superuser application.
I don't know if this is still a valid method, but...yeah.

Try an app called OTA Root Keeper (voodoo). It will temp unroot. You then need to normally force close the app you are talking about and the run it and it should work.
When you are done if you use a lot of root apps you can the undo the temp unroot and be back to full root.
Some versions of su have that ability now too but I've not tried them yet... don't really have anything that cares if I am rooted any more.
Sent from my Nexus 7
I've tried using the temp-unroot feature of the superuser app and I was not able to do so. I wish I knew what this app was looking for.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Download supermanager from playstore, enable the root function in settings. Swipe over to tge next screen and select uninstall apps and uninstall superuser. Then reboot. That should do ut.

The app is called Jeppesen Mobile TC and you will only be able to download it if you have a 9-10 inch tab with honeycomb or ICS running. I managed to get the apk so if someone wants it to try please let me know.
I will try the above shortly. Many thanks!

The app runs fine on my gfs Nexus 7 which has never been rooted.

Why not just use a file explorer with root rights to uninstall system apps by going to
/system/app and deleting it?
Odds are you'll have a file explorer already.. don't see the point in an entire separate app just for that purpose.
You can't do that when it is preinstalled into the framework of the settings of a rom

[Q] Help please :)

Bootloader unlocked...running 4.1.2....but I lost root access. Please help!!
Also, can anyone please suggest a ROM as well...I've been reading on here about Pac, Carbon, CM....this will be my first time installing a ROM so any and all suggestions/assistance is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
It is pretty unusual to lose root access suddenly. Just to be sure. Go on or play store and get root checker to see if u have or haven't got root access.

I don't have anything without being there. I used this by DL the entire root zip chain fire has prepared. I extracted the "guts" and then used PC Odin to Odin in root/supersu...then after reboot I DL ROM manager and used it to one click in CWM.
You could also Google QBKing77 and tag root s4 behind it and his video is on there its perfect

All are pretty sweet....the TW are all real nice and the AOSP side seems to be transitioning to 4.4 from 4.3 so they are "growing"
