[Q] Nexus 4 wont start, but charges. - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
My Nexus 4 got wet a couple of weeks ago and received the red light of death. I assumed it was the battery that was the issue and ordered a new one. When I replaced the battery the red light of death was gone and the display showed me the charging icon when I plugged it in to the wall.
When the battery was fully charged I pushed the start button, but the phone wont start!
I have taken apart the phone completely and dried all the parts in rice. The main board and everything looks fine, but as I said, it wont start.
Does anyone have a suggestion what the issue can be and what tricks I can try?
I miss my nexus...

Try volume down + power to get into the bootloader. Anything?

No, that didnt do it either. But I found a cheap used Nexus 4 with a smashed screen today. Bought it and took the motherboard from that one, and voilá! Now it works again.
So the problem was the motherboard.

[Q] New screen/digitizer, now nothing happens

I replaced the screen and digitizer but when I tried to power up, nothing happens. I thought it was a low battery issue so I left it charge overnight. Still nothing. I put this battery into another Nexus 7 to see if it is a battery problem. That Nexus booted up and shows the battery at 100%. So the battery did charge as it should. I tried putting the battery from the second Nexus into the first Nexus and It does nothing. I have checked all of my connections several times and everything seems to be fine. It did power up before I replaced the screen and digitizer.Any ideas?

This might be a hike but try using the old digitizer. It's very possible you have a bad digitizer since the battery charged full.
I tossed the old screen and digitizer already.
Its possible it has turned on but the screen isn't working try plugging into a computer and see if it recognises anything

OK if you have two nexus try swapping the motherboard over try not to bend the springs on the mb for the circuits on the back they are made of phosphor bronze and break easily

That's going to be my week-end project. The "good" N7 is one I use every day.
One thing I would like to add. When I was charging the battery, I did not have the back cover on completely and I could faintly a voice saying "alert". When I snapped the cover back on I could no longer hear it and it charged. Does that "alert" mean anything?

I've never heard of that before. The nexus should function without the back although WiFi NFC and Bluetooth won't work as the antenna's are attached to the back

I did get my laptop to recognize the N7.
I got a new LCD flex cable and still nothing.
I put the new S/D into my working N7 and all I get is a screen that is half black on left side and half on right side looks like the backlight is on and nothing else. So is the S/D defective?

Sounds like the screen/digitizer is defective. Return it for a refund or exchange.

Should I buy a new battery ?

Hi, I've changed the screen of my phone 1 year ago, after that the battery started acting odd...
I tried the phone 6 month ago and at that time the battery was instantly dying after passing the 50% state.
Now, I can't even power on the device...
I tried to follow this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oATx6fO35tg but it didnt change a thing.
I still have that flashing red light when I try to charge the phone...
So Is my phone dead? Or do I just need to change the battery?
Thanks
Red light happened to me this morning. Woke up the phone was 100% and it died. Turning it back on nothing. Volume down + power button it showed red light. Last week I was at 40% before it shut down and battery was completely depleted for some reason. Other steps I did today was volume up + power button for a minute then charging/and or turning it on. Volume down + power button while held plugging the power cable in. Left it charging for an hour or so. I ended up just buying a batter in the afternoon, hoping it'll fix the problems.
Really don't know what else to do.

It's possible the cable got damaged when you switched everything over. A new battery might solve your problems. Just be careful with the cable ribbon.
I have the same problem the last few days.
I changed my screen about a month ago and the phone was working fine.
Now it instantly dies at random battery percentages and also goes nuts when I charge it, it might charge ok but it might not charge at all or show one minute 5% and the next 58% etc.
I actually remember dropping it a few days ago but I don't know if it has anything to do.
So what's the next move? should I buy a new battery or the problem is somewhere else?
I am also attaching a screenshot to see how crazy it goes in charging and battery drops.
I've bought a new battery for 15 bucks everything is well again

Where did you purchase your battery from? I bought one to fix my red light Nexus and while it now powers on, the battery was clearly used (sold as new) and it lasts maybe 5 hours in standby before dying completely.

Help Bringing My Dead Nexus Back To Life.

Okay guys, So My nexus 4 power button is broken, and the digitizer is kind of broken near the nav bar and a few other places. So I basically got stuck in Recovery because the nav buttons wouldn't work and the power button was broken, so I had to wait till the whole battery drained. Then the phone wouldn't charge or start. I waited almost a week, opened up the back and tried to remove the battery. I ended up stripping a screw. And that's when I gave up and tried plugging the wall charger again, hoping it would charge and I got a blinking red light! I was able to get the phone to charge.
Unfortunately, flashing the rom failed and now im back to square one, no red light or chargin and opening the back doesn't seem to fix my phone. What do I do guys, Im desperate!
BUMP
You need to fix a few things really. Need to either get your battery charged or replace it. Also you're gonna need to fix the power button, part is cheap.
Were you having any problems charging the phone before the battery drained?

Nexus 4 - Black Screen and Red LED

Hi,
my nexus 4 stops working in just a day.
In the morning it was fully loaded and after pulling out the charging cable the smartphone shutsdown immediately.
If i try to power on the smartphone nothing happens. not even blinking red led. Even if i press power on or power on + volume down for long time.
If i connect an usb power and press press power on or power on + volume down for long time the smartphone led blinks in red.
I also measured the battery voltage. its about 4,2Volts. So nearly fully charged. Is also tried another battery which didn't help niether....
I have read many theads about this problem and i have tried many tutorials but nothing helped. I can't get the nexus 4 to get to the booting screen.
Maybe motherboard total damage?
Cheers
Christoph
How old is the battery? I suspect it could still be a battery issue.

The battery is about 2 years old.
What i have done now, i have bought a used nexus 4 with a cracked display.
Then i used my old case with display and battery and assembled it with the bought motherboard.
Problem solved now but i have no clue why the old motherboard keeps stop working...

Help! Battery drained, phone won't turn on, battery charging icon flashes on and off?

My phone had been working perfectly fine, as well as charging perfectly fine. Recently, I accidentally let it drop to 0%, which I don't usually do. I went to plug it into the same wall outlet as always, but instead of the usual charge process, the battery icon with the lightning bolt in the middle simply flashes on the screen and then turns off, which happens over and over again.
It should be noted as well that about 3 weeks ago my phone get fairly wet. After that incident, I turned it off till it dried, powered it up, and everything appeared to be totally ok. No problems since then until this.
Other facts:
-I can safely get into the recovery menu (power + vol down), which is stable, but any menu selections result in the Motorola splash screen for a quick second and then the phone powering down.
-The computer will recognize the connection to the phone.
Attempts to resolve:
-New cable, new usb hub, new wall outlet
-Trickle charge from the computer (same flashing)
-Phone in rice to remove moisture
-Toothbrush cleaning of Micro-usb port (suggestion from another thread)
I'm pulling my hair out, and I am considering prying off the back and replacing the battery. I have searched other threads, but have seen various solutions none of which worked for me. If anybody has any idea how I can fix this please help!!!
Thanks in advance.
Unfortunately most probably is the hardware problem. I had similar issue with razr. Splashed it on the beach, quickly washed with tap water, dryed it and for couple of days like nothing happened. Then suddenly digizer stopped working. It was motherboard. Luckily one xda member donated me the same phone with broken screen so I replaced motherboard by myself.

Thanks for the suggestion. Well, I got it back working again, by charging it for 5 hours straight and then not charging it for an hour. Now it appears to be functioning alright, with the exception that it once went from 40% bat to 15% to 0% in a matter of seconds and I had to repeat the procedure to get it back on. I have another turbo with a broken digi that I could cannibalize but I have no idea what to replace... the battery? Bizarre issue, but I guess that comes with the territory of water damage.
Maybe some part is still wet. If another Turbo has only broken screen, then is probably the easiest solution to take screen from the (ex)wet and put to another one. You just have to have proper screwdriver.
Replaced battery now Droid turbo flashing when I charge?
