No service icon - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

This is happening to two different s4s on my account. One is completely stock, other is stock but rooted with some frozen apps.
Every now and then, I will see a circle with a slash through it, and have no data access at all. I have to reboot the phone to get data access again.
Anyone else?
I do see some info on the sprint forum about it.
http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/130462

If you're not getting a signal that's what happens. It's a coverage or tower issue. Update prl and profile of you haven't already. Might help

No that isn't the issue. I am in a coverage issue both times, the phone just shuts the services down and the phone needs to be restarted.
Yes I know that if I am up in space and not near a tower than I would not have service. But this doesn't happen in So Cal. This issue is specific to the S4.

There are coverage holes even though maps may show good coverage and may change literally over night for the worse. That is the gamble you take with Sprint service. There are always going to be some duds regardless of manufacturer if you feel that is the problem then you should contact Sprint if you have insurance. Won't hurt to do that either way. If there is a Sprint store in the same area I would head over there and compare it to the demo models. Or obviously if you know someone with a Sprint gs4, compare with that. Airplane mode might be quicker than rebooting.

I am not sure how you are missing what I typed.
This is happening to 2 different S4s on my account. One in Anaheim and one in Torrance. My wifes S3 right next to my phone has 4 bars of service.
There is something wrong with the S4 that causes it to shut off its receivers. This isn't a "You are not in a covered area" issue.

The thread you linked to didn't r really indicate it's a known issue. Hardly any posts in it. Where is the thread for it on this site? Like I said take them to a Sprint store. I have two also and coverage is an issue regardless of what the Sprint site says.

Help: Need help figuring if this is a phone issue or carrier issue...

Ok, I've had an 8525 unlocked for about 3 months now... Unlocked and used on t-mobile's network...
Until recently, I've had 0 issues with my phone from what I can remember(now running PDAs v20 windows 6.1 rom)
My problem is, during the day, in my room I recieve any and every phone call that comes in, calls never drop or hang up, BUT the call seems to cut out for about 5-15 seconds and then cut back in.. even though it says I have 4 bars.. in my kitchen with 4 bars, I get all my phone calls, but can't hear people (nor can they hear me at all)... I get emails, and browse the web fine.. but can't use google maps app (can't find my location until I leave lol)
I don't know what's up... at night, when I'm in my room, my phone works fine with no cutting out and in during calls, but during the day, that's when it wants to act all crazy... other t-mobile phones work perfectly fine in my room... my old sidekick also worked fine..
when I'm anywhere else in my city, my phone works fine (even with 2 bars)
I know nothing about how cell phones work when communicating with cell towers so any help someone can give me will be very helpful as I do not want to catch an aneurism calling T-Mobile themselves for help (though I doubt they'll help me since I'm using an unlocked ATT phone on their service lol)
Also... sometimes txt messages come and give me a time like it's in another time-zone... usually this happens when I'm out of state roaming on a different network (Immix in central PA for the most part) but now it seems to be popping up even while I'm home in NY...
any ideas?
seems like some kind of interference near your home...could be a carrier tower or even your TV? You could check with tmob if others in the hood are having day issues...
not sure what radio version u have, but u could try flashing a different one...
I've tried numerous radio's but having the same issues... it's some kind of interference in my house I guess.. I just can't figure out what it is... I called up t-mobile and was embarassed when he said "oh u have an ATT phone" lol he told me to switch sim cards with someone else on t-mobile in my home to see what happened... but.. no progress... I unplugged my wifi router to see if that would help but it didn't
I just find it completely odd that my service craps out on me in my room ONLY during the day... and it never did this when I first got the phone.. I'm completely lost... good news is, it only happens in my house...
Could be someone close by has just invested in a piece of equipment that is causing interference.. Might not be just in your place...
yeah, another thing that MIGHT be causing the interference is that they have been doing a lot of road work in my area... that could also be why it happens during the day but not at night... my kitchen is a different story, but different radio's have gave me different reception... with some radio's... it fades out completely and with others it'll fade out for maybe a second or 2
or it could be my neighbor who recently had a stroke, I guess there might be some machines in there.. who knows
I tried the latest radio and it yielded the best results in my kitchen so far but man oh man does it burn battery when I'm on the phone
I'm having the same problem...well as far as the text msgs go so i called tmobile last night and they took me off the network and placed me back on and since then I havent had any problems
Update: I put my GF's att sim card in my phone and went to all my "dead spots"... even when the signal bars were down to almost 0, the quality of the call was still clear and it wouldn't fade in and out during a call... Does anyone know if there's anything T-Mobile can do? Because I tried my moms sim card in my phone (t-mobile) and gave me the same crappy results (calls fading in and out at full 4 bar signal)

Phone issue or ROM? Weird problem - Sprint clueless.

I hope someone has an idea on whats going on with my phone right now. These are the facts.
Cell phones are getting the message:
"All circuits are busy now, please try your call again later. 113b"
When they try and dial into my phone. Outgoing calls are working fine, as well as data, texting, voicemails. The only issue is CELL PHONEs which seem to be in my area code calling me.
It's making the same noise as when you make a phone call and the line has been disconnected.
Im rooted right now, running Fresh 1.1. But this started happening with hte TTG rom. I did a backup to fresh to make sure that it wasnt the ROM. It isnt.
Ive called sprint and they refreshed my profile and PRL, and did a test call from thier line, and the tech's personal cell phone, and it worked fine for them. However, my fiance's phone who is right next to me is still getting the error(she's on att), a friend of mine across town is still getting the number(he's on verizon), and my mother tried calling and got the same message and she's also on verizon. The only similarity is that their all my same area code, and that they are all cell phones. But LANLINE are working in my area. I dont know.
Things i've tried:
Restarting the phone
Pulling the batt for 60s
Doing a nandroid backup
Doing a nandroid backup from adb to insure a good backup
Updating PRL
Updating Profile
Having sprint refresh both PRL and Profile
Testing:
I've had cell phones in my area call me to getting the same message.
Have had lanlines call me in the area and they are working. Sprint lady's lanline and cellphone both worked outside of my area code.
Had a cell phone out of state call me and it worked fine.
Advice:
Sprint lady told me to go to a sprint store and have them update my PRL.
Summary:
Cellphones in my area code are not able to call my phone. Out of area code work fine calling it. I can call out everywhere. Lanlines in my area can call me fine, as well as me call them.

What? im just trying to give as much information as possible. i already said what thier suggestion is. Thats take it to a store and have them update the PRL. I dont have much faith in thier tech support so seeing if anyone with some real knowlege of how this stuff works has any ideas. Started happening randomly too, phone was working fine as far as i knew.
Ahh just saw your edit, our usernames are simlar. myke66 and mykey. similar, but different
Sorry, I don't think you will trip anyone up here that easily.
Better luck next time.

I would say something is wrong with the cell tower near you. The only time I get that message is when either a cell tower is down or a cell tower is overloaded. I wish I knew more about cell towers to explain it better.
A PRL update isn't going to help you unless you are roaming, which doesn't sound like that's the case.

In your case, it sounds like the PRI's are down or the equipment is not responding to outside calls. Have you tried getting someone that has a Sprint phone to try to contact you (besides Customer Service)?

Still sounds like a cell tower issue. What you could do to see if that's the case is to relocate the phone to another cell tower (I think cell towers have a radius of roughly 4 miles...could be wrong on that) and have someone with a cell phone call you (like your girlfriend or your mom).
If the connection completes, then the issue isn't your phone, but your cell tower.

isn't it more along the lines of 12 miles?
crap...im wrong. Cellfinder puts me at just over 4 miles direct from my tower. But I think the radius is bigger than 4, since I've got service, and there's basically 3.5+ miles of limestone in the way of the tower lol

That's why I said "I could be wrong." I think it's generally 4, but depends on a lot of factors (such as how high the cell tower is...one that is on top of a large building will have a larger radius than one closer to the ground.
Again, I could still be wrong. Maybe someone who is more familiar with cell towers can shed some light on the subject.
This has been going on since this morning. I've left my area a few times today, so im pretty sure i was outside of the one towers signal. I was a good 10-20 miles away at one point and it was doing the same thing.
well the sure way to know that it is not something that the rom did is to run the RUU to get back to bone factory stock and see if it still does it.
I highly doubt that it is a rom problem though. also have you changed any settings?
I had a problem where I changed the wireless network settings to EVDO only and that made it so I wasnt reciving calls or anything. not the same problem but could just be a settings thing.

See, thats the thing. Nothing has been changed. It worked yesterday as far as i know, but upon waking up to text messages about my phone not working, it started. First message i got about it was around 11am. I can try doing the RUU, but i doubt this is a ROM issue. Wouldnt make sense. Not to mention ive tried various roms and backups that i knew were fine.
gonna try the RUU
the thing is, if you RUU the phone and it still has the problem then there will be no issue taking it to a sprint store and having them test it and replace it. If you where to take it in with a costom rom on it then they could say that the problem has something to do with the rom and give you crap about replacing it.

true, i guess its something im going to have to do anyway. Will update thread twhen the RUU is complete and i test it
Just something of interest, there's what im assuming, an error code of some kind at the end of the "All circuits are busy right now, please try your call again later message." It completes with a male voice saying 001p or 001b, hard to understand because its staticy. Ive googled both codes to no avail.

The beginning of phreaking on cell phones.
On another note, that is a message that would be related to the service side I would think. Like that is a message that is service side based, maybe there is an issue with your phone line on sprint's part? dunno just some insight.

[Q] my G2 loses service, restart brings it back

hey everyone
so my G2, which I absolutely love, has been having a problem lately. in the first week it happened maybe once and i didn't think much of it, but since Friday it's happened like 8 times now. I'll be sitting there with my G2 and all the sudden I have no service whatsoever. Just an x on the signal strength indicator. 1 or 2 times it has come back after a minute or two, but the other times I had to turn the phone off and back on. the weird part is I'm not moving at all, totally sitting still, but when it comes back on I have FULL bars with HSPA+. so it's not like I walked into an area that didn't get good reception.
any idea what's going on? i looked around but didn't see other people having this issue. any ideas?
thanks
alright well at least i'm not alone. i remember that rumored OTA update was supposed to have some radio bugfixes. maybe when the real OTA update comes it will have something to fix this. i hope so.
I have been trying to diagnose this issue on my phone too.
By any chance, do either of you have your BT on at the time?
Happens to mine as described and I have never turned on bluetooth. However this would also happen to my G1 so I think its a network thing personally.
Yeah, it definitely is. I have 2 areas that it happens in, both are while I am in my car and I have BT on in my car. When I ran it without BT, did not happen.
I have found that when I am in those area's, turning off 3G stops it entirely, even with BT on, so when in my car, I set edge and still use my BT and problem is gone.
I hope this is temporary and an OTA can fix the handoff from 3G to Edge and back better so that I can stop this, but this works well enough.
Mine has done that also, maybe once a week for the past 3 weeks.
Judging by the other problems you can have Id say this one isnt that bad. Especially if it only happens once a week haha. This is the only problem I have with my phone.
no bluetooth...
no no bluetooth on, i never do actually... but also my G1 never did this, which makes me think it's NOT a network thing, but I don't know.
also I'm sure this is just coincidence but it almost always happens when my girlfriend is nearby with her T-Mobile Blackberry Curve. i know it wouldn't make any sense, but she's sitting there on the same network with full service and all the sudden my G2 loses service completely, right next to her... although it's not always while she's there, but like the majority of the times she's been there.
I just started another post to check on something, I have widgets that show me when I am connected to 3G and when I am connected to H. I have noticed that the phone is activity managing that connection. In other word, it is in 3G until data is transfered then it goes to H. I wonder if when we are in areas of "questionable" HSDPA signal if this hand off is causing the problems.
I have seen a lot of op's say that there problems come right after some data activity?
Just a guess a this point
i saw someone mention in another post that it happens after/during a text message alot of times. i haven't noticed that myself, but that's something to think about too.

What I've heard is that the phone will stay in 3G mode until you begin using data in order to save battery life. Makes sense to me.

[Q] Timestamp Issue With Text Messages

Hello,
I'm new here, so forgive me if this has been answered before. I did a search and couldn't find anything that helped with my issue, but maybe I just missed something.
I have a new HTC Surround, originally locked to Telus, but now unlocked and on the Rogers network.
Everything is working great except that the timestamp for incoming text messages is incorrect, and off by about 5 hours. The minutes in the timestamp is accurate, but the hours is off by 5 hours.
For instance, a message sent by me has a timestamp of 4:22p. The reply to that message comes in with a timestamp of 11:25a.
I've seen that this has been an issue for other HTC phones in the past, as well as possibly a problem with Rogers' network but I can't seem to find a fix. I was previously using a Sony x10 on Rogers (hated the phone) and never had this problem.
I sent a message to HTC customer support, but was hoping somebody here would be able to help me faster.
Any help that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.
I had this issue with Bell Vibrant Galaxy S on the Fido as well, and had to use an app called SMS Timefix.
btw Wepeel, who did you use to get the phone unlocked? I'm still trying to find someone to do it for me. I'm in the Toronto GTA area.
Thanks for the input. I don't think there's an app yet for wp7 (at least nothing in the market). I got a response from HTC and they said it was a network problem. However, I've never had this problem on Rogers before. I've only had the Surround for 3 days, and the x10 I had before (for 2 months) never had this problem, and neither did my iphone.
I'm going to contact Rogers tomorrow and see what they have to say about it.
As far as unlocking, I won the phone from Breakfast Television and was given the unlock code directly from Telus. However, depending on where in Toronto you live, you should check out the Pacific Mall (Steeles/Kennedy in Markham) or craigslist.
The Pacific Mall is a great place to go to get anything unlocked, and its usually pretty cheap. There's also an ad on CL right now advertising unlocking for the Surround for $29 (which I find pretty expensive).
Hope that helps.
Same issue, same situation.
I have an unlocked TELUS surround on Rogers, and the timestamps on the TXT messages are -5 hours from the real time.. Obviously the phone is expecting the carrier to timestamp the messages in UTC and the phone is correcting.. there should be an OS tweak for this somewhere.
Oh, and MyNameIsWepeel;
If you think this is fun, wait until you search for something in the maps.. I searched for TELUS in maps hoping to find the local telus dealer and it came up with Telus, Russia. (It's a city apparently). It seems if your phone is configured for Canada (eveything under Region & Locale) the maps search doesn't work correctly. You need to set it up for US to get it to work.

The problem with that though, is the market will no longer download apps. Or at least it didn't for me. I changed my locale, which did help with searches in maps, but then I couldn't download any apps. I just kept getting error messages. Changing my locale back to Canada fixed it immediately.
I just changed my locale last night to all US, and I was still able to download apps. Albeit I got an error message occasionally, but then I just restarted the download and it all worked. I figured it was server related.

I'll have to check it out again, maybe it was just server problems. I'll admit I wasn't very patient with it.
On an unrelated topic, how are you guys finding the reception on the phone? I've noticed I'm getting slightly poorer reception in some areas that my x10 got great reception.
Well I'm not the best person to ask about reception... I'm coming from an iphone.
My major beef with this phone is the battery life; it's simply unacceptable. I always end up coming home with 20% or less... Either an aftermarket upgrade will need to show up to save the day or I'll be forced to switch phones.
Ive had similar battery problems, but it charges so fast it hasnt been an issue. I throw it on the car charger for 20 minutes and im good for the rest of the day. But back on topic.. i have a similar issue with text messages, except my time stamps are about 30-45 seconds slower which sometimes causes my device to send texts before one is received. its not a huge deal though, but still kind of odd.
Prior to this phone, I had an iPhone 3G, 3GS, Nexus One, and Samsung Galaxy S - all with the same carrier.
This phone has the best reception so far. On my home from work today I tested it out. There's always an area my bars go to zero and my calls drop. With this phone it was the first time I never dropped the call completely. In fact, the signal was completely strong. I'm happily surprised by this.
Well, I finally found out what was causing my reception problems. This phone, or mine anyway, has a very serious deathgrip issue. Any time I would hold the phone at the bottom (where the antenna is) or with both hands, I would lose at least 2-3 bars. A lot of the time I would completely lose signal. As soon as I moved my hand up to the top, right back to full bars.
And since you need to hold the phone at the bottom to text and talk, it pretty much made the phone useless to me.
So I sold my Surround (for $500) and I'm going to get something else.

Sudden Loss of Data on Nexus S

Hey guys,
This is actually my first post here but I do A LOT of reading on this forum.
I didn't quite find anything regarding my question (or at least a solid answer), however, so I've decided to post it up.
Has anyone else experienced a sudden loss of data from time to time out of nowhere?
I go from having Full Green 3G bars to grey bars out of the blue. I've heard the green bars is to let you know that you are connected to Google services but I am not able to access anything that uses data.
For instance, when I open up the browser, I receive an error telling me there is no network connection. When I open up anything else that uses a data connection, Market, News, etc, I receive the same error about there not being a connection.
This would make sense if I was moving and going in and out of service areas, but it happens when the phone is simply sitting on my desk and not moving at all. I usually use it to listen to Pandora while at work and have noticed that the songs cut in and out due to this sudden loss of a data connection.
I went from a Nexus One to the Nexus S and have never, not once, lost my full 3G bars in this same exact location. I personally believe its a software bug of some kind and have high hopes for it being fixed in the future. The N1 had similar issues when it first launched and Google / T-Mo were able to remedy that for the most part.
I am actually on my third Nexus S because the first two had some type of hardware issue; the first one's back button didn't work or light up and the second one had a blown ear speaker and would sound like a blown speaker in a car. As an early adopter, I expected this, so it didn't bother me in the least bit.
ALL of them did the same thing, so I know it is not just limited to my exact phone. This is definitely something with the Nexus S in general (or the current build of Gingerbread).
Can anyone shine some light on this situation? Thanks in advance and keep up the great work here guys!
---------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: Here are a few steps that I have taken in order to solve my sudden loss of data issue. I'm not guaranteeing this will work for you, but it has worked for me and a couple of users here on the forum.
Do the following:
Activate / Use the Sim Card that came with the phone (this is to ensure you are using the latest sim cards)
Make sure you have a 4G internet plan. (No t-zones, No web2go -- FULL internet only)
Call T-Mobile and have ask them to Reset your phone with their Towers
Here's a more technical explanation posted by Johoja:
1) Having network selection set to manual ( i.e selecting 302490 or TMOBILE) will result in No Service on a reboot. Solutions: - Have to cycle airplane mode to get it to pick up service (can be done with automatically tasker) - OR Use automatic network selection. (you can force wcdma only but that will reset the SMSC which is annoying if you go in and out of wind away/home areas and you want to roam.)
2) Being in a area with no service for extended periods of time 5+minutes(subway, basement, etc) will result in a dead baseband, meaning once you come into an area with service the phone will not reacquire signal, airplane mode will not work as the baseband is now crashed, cant maunally search for a network. Have to reboot to get signal. Solutions: -Use tasker to cycle airplane mode on and off when in no service areas i.e) search signal 4 minutes, airplane mode on 10 minutes. This will keep the baseband from crashing and possibly save battery. -Use NoBars to accomplish thesamething ( taskergivesyou a bitmore flexibilty of course but harder to use) http://www.appbrain.com/app/nobars-b...omdryer.nobars - Use airplane edit to avoid turning wifi/bt off when airplane mode is on. http://www.appbrain.com/app/airplane...kalti.airplane
3) WCDMA perferred does not work. - No solution
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=747f398a6c1bb2b9&hl=en&start=40:
I read one users response on a different thread regarding something similar to the issue that I am having.
They said T-Mobile told them to get a newer sim card and that this may remedy the problem. In my case, this has been the only constant in the 3 phones that I have been through. I have had the same sim card for about 3 years or so now.
I will try activating the sim card that came in the box with T-Mo to see if this remedies the problem. Since I'm at work right now I will have to try when I get home later.
Does anyone think this will have any affect what-so-ever?
The galaxy s phones when first released, all variants, had issues of signal dropping from full to zero bars while sitting in one place. I remember because there were YouTube videos of it All over and it was shortly after the apple antenna issue.
Not sure if or how it was ever resolved. But it seems that Samsung may just have this type of radio baseband performance if we see all these individual units doing this. I don't know maybe others can respond.
I have the same issue as the OP. I travel to the same location weekly with NEXUS ONE, signal never drops in the T-MO Country here locally, and streaming CNET POD CAST never a hiccup, however, with the new NEXUS S, I would lose DATA Connection only, while the 3G will show full signal. I had to reboot the phone to get the DATA back.
is it the S issue or 2.3 issue?
food for though....
If you have T-zones or Web2go or Phones 1st web, you will have problems
I had the same problem too, now I fixed the problem. The thing was that had the wrong data plan on the NS, i had my old web plan from my hd2 which seems like different from the one for the NS. I restarted my phone after 5 mins off and now i have my internet working beautifly. A T-Mobile rep said that it was an error in the system that made the phone think that that was the right plan for the NS for a few. A glitch you may say, but all you have to do is put the right data plan that all, easy. Hope this helped and have a wonderful holidays everyone.

this is happening to me too, last night for a little while and today for about hte last 4 hours can't get connection back. i have full white bars, with 3g icon but can't access anything
So I activated the new sim card last night and I'm still having the same problem. Albeit it doesn't happen as frequent, but it still does it nonetheless.
I will call T-mo again to verify my plan. I am on a 1500 Minute Family Plan which includes unlimited data and messages. I will see if they need to tweak something and let you guys know if this remedies the problem.
Ok, it seems like the issue has been resolved after I spoke to T-Mobile earlier today.
The rep on the phone verified that the data plan I was on was in fact the correct one. He said he was going to reset the signal from the towers to my phone to see if this would resolve the issue. He asked me to turn my phone off for about 15 seconds after we hung up.
Since then, I haven't seen the problem arise again so my guess is that it somehow fixed whatever was going on.
I'll let you guys know if this changes and the problem occurs again.

What's with the CAPS? ?
On topic: i have a captivate and I can confirm that all galaxy S phones had droppend data. An official ota update fixes it so maybe you guys need to wait for something official. Isn't there a new firmware for the nexus S already? Try flashing that and see if you still have issues.

Doesn't every android phone from samsung have this problem?
I know the Moment has that problem, after 3 updates samsung called it quits, I still have to reboot mine 2 to 3 times a day for data lockups.
@timur525 Yea, I'm already on 2.3.1.
I manually updated the first hour it came out hoping that it would solve the issue. The problem was still there after the update.

I have exactly the same issue as the OP. Extremely annoying to reboot the phone every time it happens. One thing I have noticed is that my phone doesn't know its number. If I go to settings, about phone, the number says unknown.

That shouldn't affect anything. My number shows up in status.
I had this issue resolved a few months ago as the push-to-talk app Tikl requires this in order to use it.
I was having the problem even with my number showing up. Call T-Mobile and have them reset you with the towers like they did for me and see if that helps you too.

I posted about this same issue on wrong section of the forum. Ive had this issue ever since samsung vibrant. I have applanet installed on my phone and some of the app that i installed accessed my apn and totally changed my apn setting to "Sirious application disabled.epc.tmobile" or something like that so i wyped everthing off from the phone and so far i havent had the issue ever since yesterday. Also i had the locale and language setting to korean so im thinking that might be causing it also.

That's what I remember too. I think its just an issue with the radio Samsung uses in all their phones. Might not be a way to fix it if even their new phones like the nexus s still have this issue. They prob would have tweakdd it by now if they could.
Same problem here. Xmas eve on shift and I have a phone that had no connection whatsoever (not even phone capabilities) this may be the one thing that takes the phone back. (If it happens again)

Have you called T-Mobile to see if they can give you a reset to the towers?
I had this done yesterday afternoon and haven't had the problem again since.
Also, if you'really using an old sim, I would suggest activating the one the phone came with just to be on the safe side.
If that doesn't help you then I would at least wait until just before your return period ends to see if there will be an update to address the issue.
