[Q] Google Maps/Navigation not saying street names - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I finally got my Tmo G2 last night and plan on spending the next 13 days playing with it to make sure I want to keep it. I ran the GPS from the store back home, just to test the GPS and the volume. They were fine; however, Google Navigation wasn't speaking the street names along with the instructions.
I did some research when I got home. However, I don't have Google Text-to-Speech in my Apps list (under Settings), so I can't do anything with that. Under Language & Input, the language is set to US English. Under Text-to-Speech Output, I can choose between LG TTS+ (selected) and Pico TTS.
Does anybody else with a G2 have this problem?

hmm i dont know...but it doesn't sound good...

Well, I got Pico TTS to say the street names. I cleared cache in Maps, switched to Pico, and it works. But the voice isn't as nice as Tmobile's TTS, which is the one I'd like to use.

I know ATT has this issue and now with you the TMO version does too; i know that Verizon is loaded with the Google TTS so seems to be carrier variant.

I'm taking a wild guess, you wouldn't need Google search would you?
I use gps for my bike ride everyday. Works perfect here.

I have Google Search/Now, it's set for the default US English, and I downloaded the 22MB dictionary file, but the voice in Maps still isn't speaking the street names. It was able to verbally tell me that the Arizona Diamondbacks won, though. So this seems to be something related to the Maps program, perhaps.
In my Applications list, LG's TTS has a size of 4KB and a 28KB cache. So there's not a whole lot of data there, which I find a little odd.

I noticed the same. It was different on my gs4, It said street names and the voice was different too. Any help? I don't know what tts or Pico means

You need to have the Google tts or text to speech engine to get it to be the way you want. It seems the att & T-Mobile version isn't including it whereas Verizon did.

Odd that Google's engine wasn't included here. I did get an email from LG support this morning; seems like it's due to a change by Google in Maps.
Thank you for contacting LG Electronics!!
We apologize for this huge inconvenience. Due to an recent update that was done to the Google maps app, this feature e was modified. However you have the option to uninstall the app in order for the TTS+ to work like it use to have it before.

She meant uninstalling the Updates to the app. If you uninstall the updates, you get the regular voice back. But you also have the older version of Maps.

Yeah, that's what she clarified in my follow-up question. I may give that a try. Can't say I've been too fond of Maps since the overhaul a few months(??) ago.

Solved this problem on my TMo G2

I did. These are the steps I took to solve it:
1) Download Google TTS Engine from the Play Store and install.
2) Go into System Settings -> Language and Input -> Text to Speech and select the Google TTS engine.
Now I have street names! Yay! (She still sounds really snarky compared to the old voice I had on my G2x.)

Google Navigation since kitkat
I thought I saw this being discussed somewhere before, but can't find it. Since updating to KitKat The voice on google navigation gets cut off when giving an instruction.
Instead of saying Turn left in a quarter mile on Jones street it says, "turn left in a quarter" When it repeats the instruction at the 500 feet mark, for example, it works.
The cut off seems to occur if text to speech has been asleep because it's been a few minutes between its use.
Waze doesn't do this, because it uses a different TTS engine, but Google Nav has its own.
Has anyone found a fix?

Google navigator actually does use the system TTS engine. It defaults to the generic "turn right, turn left, etc" when it looses contact with the TTS engine. Try going to app settings, force stop Google maps, clear cache, then go to language and input....text to speech and then have it play an example of the TTS. If it all sounds good TRY Navigator again, you'll probably find it is now working.

Actually that is not trying true, just go to the play store and install. Works just fine on my AT&T D800 with kit Kat, not rooted, 100% stock as shipped by AT&T. I personally just prefer Ivona Voice, the LG TTS+ engine just didn't cut it for me.

It says Street names. It just cuts off the complete phrase when it gives an instruction after it has been idle.

Different tts voices during route

I was using Google navigation this am, and I suddenly got a different voice giving directions. It was a more natural sounding female voice. It flipped to the Google voice for a couple series of directions, and then it was back to the new voice.
I haven't installed any other tts, and I checked my default to confirm it was Google.
Anyone else?
There is a backup recorded voice, that gives indistinct directions, won't read street names etc. But the gs3 has a rather good voice I've only been able to hear in navigation. I use svox classic with UK Victoria voice, best I've heard, but it's flaky with the license checking in (I assume, it just fails to be recognized 30% of the time.)
And I get the super ****ty one.
But if I could get the s3 to work with a British accent (I feel it just sounds less robotic) I could ditch svox.

FYI, I've got the same thing on my GNex. I just noticed it the other day for the first time. It's not that big of a deal to me, but I just thought I'd give you a heads up that it's not just the GSIII.
So is it Google trying to update from gingerbread?
Gingerbread tts was a big improvement from the old pico robot.
The new voice is very natural, but it's also softer.
I was noticing this too yesterday using Google navigation. I was using it through my cars blue tooth and it started with a quiet male voice, but then switched to a loud female voice and it surprised me.

No, it's the offline navigation voice, set it to airplane mode or yank the Sim and it should do the same thing, haven't tested it though.

naw I dont think so.. this was the latest Google Nav/Maps update the new voice is even on my GS2 with ICS on it.
I also had this happen on my GSII (Sprint). Mid-trip it switched to a more natural females voice; it does still read street names and stuff. Hopefully she will stick around, she sounds way sexier than the previous beezy.
I'm getting it too, on my EVO 3D. It seems to be that they are upgrading the voice, but it hasn't rolled out to everyone, and still has gaps in what it can say. I don't know if it's the same "more natural voice" that Jelly Bean has or not, but it sounds similar to me. I just hope they flesh it out to say everything, because the changeover between new and old voices is startling!
I use Ivona voice with Amy the female UK voice. Ever since I've tried it I've never used anything else. She sounds like a real person. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ivona.tts

While this post sounds like an ad, I can definately vouch for ivona voices, they sound much more natural than svox, are free, and don't flake out on you. I personally love em and until Google now's beautiful voice comes along, I'll either use stock sexy voice that comes on and off that's being discussed, or ivona

I just downloaded ivona from the play store.. I like that you get choices of the different women's voices. I chose Amy, she has a British accent. Sounds classy! I almost went with the Australian women, she's my second favorite. I'm glad I found this application. Thanks for the information yall!

[Q] Google Hangouts / talk

Howdy,
I'm wondering if anyone has been able to get the Hangouts app to work on their N4. I'm running the latest nightly of CM 10.1. I went to install Hangouts from the Play store and it says that I have it installed. However my app is still called Talk and has the Talk interface. Has anyone had luck getting this updated?
Nevermind heh. I just used CM File Manager to move the talk.apk from /system/app to a backup location. Then I went to the Play store and tried again. This time it installed the new version.
I had the same issue. My solution was to go onto the Web store and install it from there to my phone. Seemed to do the trick.

Interesting, I tried that first but it didnt work for me.
I wish I could edit my title so it is more descriptive...
Just uninstall the original Talk app first (using Titanium or anything that's capable of remiving system app).
Seriously i rated this with 1 STAR.
It must say: "Replaces Talk AND REMOVE THE F$$$ING VOICE-CALL FEATURE FROM YOU Talk".
Its best to remove Talk and then install Hangouts.
Does anyone know how to get this working with the N4 if it's not rooted?

Nope - I have two stock, unmodified, new Nexus 4's... one upgraded no problem with the new Google Hangouts that properly replaced Google Talk... and the other, upgrades with Google Hangout but in the app list and everywhere else, still shows Google Talk but no Google Hangout. Under all apps, Google Talk is still shown. If you open it from there, the old Talk launches. If you search Google Play for Google Hangouts, it shows 'Installed' and if you open Google Hangouts from there, it launches the old Google Talk.
Very strange.... gonna try clearing some app data and what not to see if it resolves.

Please let us know if you figure anything out. I'm on stock as well and I'm starting to regret it because of updates like this. I bought this phone for updates but so far, it seems to be behind on that(4.2 OTA took a week). I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling google+ and that didn't work. I thought it might be tied to g+ since Google is trying to make it more involved with Android. I might root this weekend if I don't get it soon.

I was able to use a browser and install it to my wife's Nexus S though.
Here is the APK for v 1.0.0.678017 which I was able to side load and works fine on my N4.

I made the same mistake. I removed the update "3.6.1.44747389", but now the market pushes "3.6.0.44338848" instead. Not sure what the difference is, but I side loaded a backup of the newer version.

Installing custom ROMs will change your 'OS' on the device. Rooting allows certain root apps to have elevated privileges. If your goal is to have the official Kitkat 4.4 release, you'll have to wait for LG to release it as an update.
What exactly are you looking for in 4.4 other than the version number? LG has done a pretty good job of enhancing the stock Android interface.

Thank you for that explaination.
I am looking for the improved Google Now "OK Google" functionality. Improved Maps functionality, etc. I guess you wouldn't get that from a custom ROM. I do like the UI that LG provides. They did do a great job.
Also would have liked to get the game OFF that my provider put on it (can't uninstall it). They also have some Remote Control app on it that I can't uninstall as well. Guess I'll just wait for an official KitKat update.

The Google Now voice commands are also available on the LG and they also added LGs own voice assistant Called Genie. Try swiping up from the bottom middle of the screen and you'll see LGs voice assistance available to the left. You can select what keyword wakes it up like "LG Mobile" or "Hello Genie".
The new maps are available from the Play store in addition to other new Google functions. They appear to be separating these updated apps into downloadable add-ons that can be installed on most other devices.

Until voice recognition becomes seamless and closer to 100% accurate it will remain mostly a gimmick. It's OK to play with for 10 minutes but currently isn't ready for most user's primary device control (both Siri and GV).

I'm not sure it works for everyone. Can you just go through the language settings and chuck the language which is enabled"Because most of the times it works only with US English.I tried other english versions but it didn't worked for me.

Ok Google!
Just install "OK Google for 3rd party activities" module, only works with Kit Kat, after installing clear Google search data. No battery drain or other issues.

Google Dialer app

Can anyone help me out how I can get the google phone/dialer app on our 6T. I have the T-MO version and obviously it's not yet unlockable. Is there a non-rooted version of the google dialer? I just hate the stupid dialer and sms apps that come with the stock OS.
It's upsetting that OnePlus doesn't allow us to install it from the Store. We should have the freedom of choosing what works best for us.
You could search apk mirror for the google dialer. Just search google dialer apk and you should see a website not too far down called APK Mirror.
Not sure if allowed, but try this one. (Mod, if this needs to be removed, please let me know or feel free to do so, thanks)

Not sure off hand. I just came from a Nexus 6 and that had voice mail app in dialer. However I just tried this app and it won't install. You could try searching for a variant of this app

I tried other variants, it didn't install either. It's a shame that we are being forced to choose something we don't want. Trying to download from the Store - tells me my device is not compatible, which is a load of crap!
Can't wait to unlock my phone.

Lol yeah that was the first place I tried too. I saved all my apps as apks from my old phone and tried to install them on the op6t. I'd say all save 4 installed. And the ones that did6were Google apps. I'll keep searching and let you know if I find anything

What's the solution? Just picked up my 6T and would prefer the Google phone and contacts.
Try the last beta from the following thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...google-phone-v14-0-175904292-bubble-t3708218.
Change the app to default phone app to get the visual vm tab after installing
Hey ozzmanj1, can you please let me know the solution as well? Thank you.
Out of interest what makes Google Dialer/Phone & Contacts so popular with people ?

Hey zeros, I just found the solution at this link that I shared with M5devil (and he shared it here)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-google-phone-v14-0-175904292-bubble-t3708218.
I used the version 24 non beta apk. Works like a charm

The search in dialer works very well, it can be the fastest way to get a number for a local place. The spam block is somewhat less effective but still a lot better than nothing. I'm looking forward to getting the screening which I suspect will be coming our way. I sent my Pixel 3 XL back and that's one of the things I'm missing.
Version 25 is working great

Same here. Google has indicated that call screen is only going to be available on the Pixel 3 for a while.
I hope someone can grab it and put I on our OP6t!!

The apps are more streamlined and fit better with the overall Google environment. Not to mention call blocking feature and scam call screening is amazing
Yeah, they've said that about a number of features but we had the stuff pretty quickly; sometimes within weeks. The force is strong with our developers! I'm sure you're aware of that, I'm just stating my agreement. In a way it's kind of sad; the stock dialer is pretty good, it just lacks a few killer features. Who know, maybe the one plus 7 will see some improvements in this area?
The link that has been posted kindly above:

Is definitely the one to use/follow for Google Phone/Dialer from here on in, unless notified otherwise, is that correct ?
