[Q] Google Hangouts / talk - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Howdy,
I'm wondering if anyone has been able to get the Hangouts app to work on their N4. I'm running the latest nightly of CM 10.1. I went to install Hangouts from the Play store and it says that I have it installed. However my app is still called Talk and has the Talk interface. Has anyone had luck getting this updated?

Nevermind heh. I just used CM File Manager to move the talk.apk from /system/app to a backup location. Then I went to the Play store and tried again. This time it installed the new version.

I had the same issue. My solution was to go onto the Web store and install it from there to my phone. Seemed to do the trick.

Interesting, I tried that first but it didnt work for me.
I wish I could edit my title so it is more descriptive...

Just uninstall the original Talk app first (using Titanium or anything that's capable of remiving system app).

Seriously i rated this with 1 STAR.
It must say: "Replaces Talk AND REMOVE THE F$$$ING VOICE-CALL FEATURE FROM YOU Talk".

Its best to remove Talk and then install Hangouts.

Does anyone know how to get this working with the N4 if it's not rooted?

Nope - I have two stock, unmodified, new Nexus 4's... one upgraded no problem with the new Google Hangouts that properly replaced Google Talk... and the other, upgrades with Google Hangout but in the app list and everywhere else, still shows Google Talk but no Google Hangout. Under all apps, Google Talk is still shown. If you open it from there, the old Talk launches. If you search Google Play for Google Hangouts, it shows 'Installed' and if you open Google Hangouts from there, it launches the old Google Talk.
Very strange.... gonna try clearing some app data and what not to see if it resolves.

Should I also unplug it and wait 30 seconds?
I have the same issue as OP. I can't uninstall Talk (no root) and the play store is showing that hangout is installed. I open it and Talk comes up.

Please let us know if you figure anything out. I'm on stock as well and I'm starting to regret it because of updates like this. I bought this phone for updates but so far, it seems to be behind on that(4.2 OTA took a week). I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling google+ and that didn't work. I thought it might be tied to g+ since Google is trying to make it more involved with Android. I might root this weekend if I don't get it soon.

I had the same problem earlier trying to download it from the play store app, so I went to the desktop play store site and remotely installed it from there and it worked.

Google have addressed this as follows:
Google said:
NOTE: If you aren't yet able to install Hangouts on your phone or tablet, or the Play Store "Open" button takes you to the old Talk app, hang tight, we are rolling out Hangouts to everyone over the course of several days. Rest assured Hangouts will be available soon for all Android 2.3+ devices, tablets included!

I was having the same issue as others. It shows as installed on the phone (v 1.0.0.1) and via Play Store in a browser.
I was able to use a browser and install it to my wife's Nexus S though.
Here is the APK for v 1.0.0.678017 which I was able to side load and works fine on my N4.
Due to APK file size, I had to upload it in a ZIP archive.

Thanks mate, I had the same issue on my JB Xperia. Your APK worked.

N4!

Didnt work for me at first. Then i went to the web app store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5nb29nbGUuYW5kcm9pZC50YWxrIl0.) and pressed install. Installation was pushed to my device and now it works great!

I made the same mistake. I removed the update "3.6.1.44747389", but now the market pushes "3.6.0.44338848" instead. Not sure what the difference is, but I side loaded a backup of the newer version.

The apk SpookyTunes posted worked for me, I have it on my Galaxy tab 2.

Amazon broken under 4.2 ?

Since updating to 4.2 I now have to login on the Amazon App Store every time I use the app... And every time I use an Amazon purchased app...

Any thoughts?
Are there any new settings in 4.2 that control / affect login preservation?

I had same problem and thats one of the many i had with 4.2, its complete junk and should never have been released, I used mskip toolkit to revert back to 4.1.1, its easy other than losing all your data and having to redo everything, but its better than a bug ridden os

The last I checked, it was up to third party app developers to revise their apps to keep up with what is essentially a major update to the OS and not the other way around. The bugs that I've encountered thus far are attributable to third party apps.

I'm not going to argue about this again, but Googles own stinking apps would not even work with the update, like the YouTube app, current and Gmail crashed so ya im not buying that. Why can't you people just admit, they screwed up? Die hards or you must work for Google.

In the history of OS upgrades, this is the first time programs/apps have crashed on release of an OS update/upgrade. Never has a program failed under a Windows/DOS update/upgrade, the Mac's OS, or UNIX, the Atari's OS or the Amiga OS, the Heathkit H8 running CPM...a CompuColor II. Nope.... This crash stuff has never happened until Android.

LOL. You may want to get some professional help for those paranoid delusions. Rest assured that not everyone who disagrees with your opinion is either a die hard or works for Google. On the contrary, it's simply a matter of applying some basic critical thinking skills and arriving at a conclusion supported by rational, valid premises.

Lol I never said other os' have not had problems, I would be mad if this was any other op as well. Google monkeys seem to be the worst though, they keep showing their lack of programming on YouTube that they bought and are trying to ruin. The YouTube app and webpage versions are riddled with problems, if you use them, you will understand what I'm saying.

Yes, and one of the major problems with this is I already have a few android devices and try to manage them from a PC. It's now impossible because when I try to push a purchase to my N7 Android, I can't retrieve it because i have to log into Amazon from the N7 again and it registers as a new device which is no longer matched by the pushed purchase.
The Amazon App Store also did this to me when the bootloader was unlocked in 4.1.2 - when I locked it the problem cleared up - then when I did the update to 4.2, the problem came back... Very frustrating...

Shees people, it is not that hard.
If you are having problems with the app store, just uninstall it and reinstall it.
That does NOT work, I've tried it twice. A factory reset will probably fix it, but no plans to do that.... will wait for Amazon fix, although getting very impatient (why did I ever set such a long complicated password) Never rooted, just OTA update.

Just to make sure I was not blowing smoke:
After installing the updated Amazon App store, I did have to log in - once.
I also had to indicate which credit card on my account would be used for purchases.
Subsequent use of the app did not require me to log in again, until I power cycled.
Then I had to log in again. Credit card was remembered.
I downloaded the free app of the day before power cycling, and another free one after.
Both downloaded and installed fine. They work too.
Except for having to log in again after power off, everything works as expected with 4.2.
App version is 2.6.53 (found on settings within App Store).
... hey, I'd be careful doing a factory restore; the official Amazon app is unavailable from Google Play for us 4.2 users.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I think you're one of the lucky ones. I can log in, can look at account balance, got free app of the day... but it automatically logs off about once every hour or two. If I'm logged in, then I turn off wifi, none of my Amazon apps will work (says I need to log in). Turn on wifi, Amazon is still connected (for a little while), and apps work fine. Once it disconnects (even on wifi) any app I try gives a log in message.
So far logged in 5 times today. Looking at my account on a PC, I have 6 Nexus 7 devices (from today). Not rooted, normal OTA update. I think you were one of the lucky ones!
edit: I just looked and I have 12 registered N7's... got rid of the 11 oldest ones... no help. I decided to delete all 12 and have them send a new apk via email. Just installed and logged in. Will report back when/if it disconnects.
edit2: Only took 30 minutes to ask for sign in again. Adds device on every sign-in.

Grumble - I just logged onto Amazon on my PC. App store shows 4 registered Nexus 7s.
That qualifies as broke... Also shows I don't use the Amazon App store much.
How do we notify Amazon?
Well I sent an EMail to Amazon Customer Service.

The official Amazon app has been "incompatible" with the N7 since day one, regardless of version since we lack a forward camera. The workaround is to either sideload the apk, or installing from the Amazon appstore.

Hello Thomas,
I'm sorry for the trouble you've been having with constantly having to log back into the.
I've reported this to our technical team, and they're working on taking care of it.
Please try updating the Amazon Appstore app in the next few days.
Errors like this are usually corrected shortly after they're reported.
Thanks for your patience while we fix this problem. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Using Google Hangouts on One with Bloatware

I guess some of you noticed that google just updated Google Talk to replace it with Hangouts. A nice WhatsApp Clone with some beautiful features. I guess cross platform chat (Phone <> PC) is the most interesting part.
If you are an owner of an One which has Google Talk preinstalled as bloatware there is no chance to update this via Google Play unless HTC delivers an update. Too bad we're not able to uninstall bloatware / preinstalled stuff on non rooted devices...
But if you open the Play Store via browser on your computer to instruct it to install Hangouts on your phone, it will overwrite the Google Talk and you're able to use the new Hangouts app

I really wish they integrated it with sms/mms app like Facebook Messaging can do... or just made it like iMessage. But I'm happy for the upgrade.
It might not be showing up for folks because it is probably still replicating across the Play servers.
UI Layour is quite nice, hope it gets popular, but i really wanted that it could send sms , like imessage , or sms atleast so i can use that app for all.

It's much quicker now. When you first boot (or if you kill the app) it still takes a second to open Hangouts, but returning to the app doesn't reload it every time like it did on the last version. It also seems much faster when moving between hangouts/opening a new hangout.

How can I detach Google Maps from Play Store

My lamentations of the new Google Maps are well documented. And although upon reinstalling the Kit Kat stock update I did try to give it another go, I just can't deal with it. So using Titanium Backup I uninstalled the new maps and reinstalled version 6.14.4 The issue is its still in the Playstore. Even though I used Titanium Backup to detach it from the market and then cleared cache from the Play Store it still comes back. I thought maybe it had something to do with having new maps installed on my tablet so uninstalled it but still it won't go away. So anyone have any thoughts on how to get Maps to stop showing as needing updated in the Play Store?

So anyone have any thoughts on how to get Maps to stop showing as needing updated in the Play Store?

This one should be relatively easy. Uninstall it!
Have you tried just freezing it?

?.... Maybe I didn't make my post clear enough. I want to keep Google Maps. Version 6.14.4 I just don't want the dang Playstore always trying to tell me it needs an update. Although I've used TB to detach from market and cleared market cache it still seems to pick up on it and ask me to update it. So I'm wondering is there another more effective way other than TB to detach an app from the Playstore? I can't seem to find one...

Well there is away. You will need xposed installer. After you install, download a module named "Xprivacy". Go to xprivacy, find Google playstore. Make sure to check "system installed app". This way Google play store won't be able to find which apps you have installed.

Thank you! A viable solution. I will try this. I already have Xposed. Thanks again. I will report back for future reference...
Edit: won't this stop Google Play from being able to determine other apps that I actually want to update.?

Yes you are correct. It will stop Google play from being able to determine other apps update. So far this is the only solution I know.

Google now! (Official 4.4) launcher is working with the latest search update!

It's just fiy, download the launcher from any source that you like, no need to install any search.apk, enjoy!
I hope the info made some of u waiting for KitKat happy who would've never checked if its working again(as there was no Intel search.apk).
Thanks mate now using.
And working well

Please be aware there is two different versions; Google Now launcher and AOSP version called "Launcher3" without Google Now on the left. Do you have an APK? As the Google Now launchers I'm downloading are throwing back a "Parse Error" with the latest version of Search.
EDIT: He is correct, full Google Now Launcher working. Here is the link: http://d-h.st/f6b

I had to re-update Google Play Services and Google Search from the play store to get it working.
Maybe we have to install only "GoogleHome.apk" and it should be ok.

Yes that's all that is needed to be done.
Do the relevant updates from the play store.
Then just download from the link above unzip and install just Google home

The thing is that this new update let's you activate the app from the lockscreen...
Like bellow:
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/get-ok-google-functionality-on-every-screen-without-root/
I can activate google now from anywhere, including the app drawer and lock screen.

Will This Work With A Rom Which Hasnt Got Google Now?
Will This Work With A Rom Which Hasn't Got Google Now?
No it is bound to the Google now and the best reason to use it is the nice Google now implementation.
