Black spots in pictures - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I recently purchased a second hand GS4 and noticed that in every picture there are black spots that are noticeable a lot of the time and they appear in exactly the same spot. The rear camera does have some scratches on the metal frame but I don't see any scratches on the lens with the naked eye. Should I buy an entirely new camera module or just replace the lens? I'll attach a picture below. Its easier to notice when zoomed in.
This is a better picture:

I think those spots are a sensor problem. If you can, try shooting a picture pointing to the sky. And upload it in JPG format please, without editing. I want to see the full exifs.

This doesn't appear to be a sensor problem to me - looks like hardware damage somewhere to the lens/camera.

Well yeah, I was thinking in dslr matter lol, I'm more familiar with those hehehe.. but certainly this could be a hardware damage on jpeg processor engine. Now refreshing memories I have a friend which on his EVO there was something like this but it was on the middle and bigger, and could appear on a few situation not on all shots, so we point it to hardware failure, because this looks more like post processed added.

Well this is kinda weird, because this is not dust behind the lens or on top, this are not scratches, and I guess this are also when you record video. right ? I believe the camera module will need to be replaced. But lets wait if somebody can jump here..

I can see tiny nicks on the glass lens like microscopic chips so I'm wondering if that's where this is coming from. I find it really hard to believe its the sensor but I think this weekend I'm going to remove the glass lens cover and see if it still shows up. If so then I'll try cleaning the actual lens and finally replace the entire thing if need be.

It is probably dust that got trapped on the mirror inside the camera. Replacement of the camera is the only way to fix it. I had the same issue on my old E4GT.

That happened to my at&t s4 last month, and that happened when I dropped my phone over the floor, and it was only 2 feet high only. So i went to at&t service store, and they said they can't fix it, and they will have to send it to Samsung, but they replaced the phone for me.

I actually decided to call up the AT&T Device Service Center near me and they told me to bring it in. They replaced it within 10 minutes and I was actually very shocked. One thing I do notice is that the new phone takes much sharper pictures and the lens has a purple-ish reflection in the light. The older one had a green-ish tint to it. Something was off about it.

Well that's great !! Even if you are the second owner they didn't ask for a proof of purchase or something like that ?
I don't remember where I read that the s3 used two different sensors one made by Sony and one made by Samsung and the Sony was better, probably this is the case again with the s4.
Anyway congrats one the replacement.. :good:

Lcd issue? Backlight on, small streaks and spots

So I was watching a youtube video tonight and part of the screen was black and I see these thick, kind of discolored lines, just a shade darker than the color of the backlight. I was like ok, just be the Youtube video, their cam was dirty whatever. Then I thought back a few days ago when I quickly noticed the same thing and put it off as nothing. Well I further researched it and found a completely black image on my sd card and displayed it at full brightness with the lights off and I found an annoying, yet not crutial, defect (maybe defect). It appears as though glue or something is on the underside of the lcd blocking light from coming through. I can barely find it if any light is displayed on the screen, but this dark video just made it seem so prominent. I wonder if anyone else has this issue or if it is infact a defect. I found it by viewing a dark image at medium brightness in a dark room. Putting brightness at 100% does make it a bit more prominent. I mean I could live with it I guess but it is extremely annoying to find something so stupid on such a great new phone. I wonder if it is a common issue and I ask you fellow gs3 owners to take a look at yours and tell me if it is just me. I have attached a photo I took with my dslr. The colors are kind of looking overdone because I had to bump my ISO up to like 6400 to even get a picture of it because it is so dark and I didn't want to run outside to grab the tripod. You should get the idea. The picture makes it look a lot worse than it really is. I have looked at the screen and I see no discolorations when the screen is off and I see nothing of that pattern while the screen is off anywhere on the lcd, but I couldn't find my super bright flashlight. What a day!

Yeah I notice this in the dark when watching a YouTube video. Its apparently a samoled issue and something I never noticed on samoled + screen on sgs2. Its very common and have seen a few threads about it. The good news is that you only really see it in a pitch black room when using the phone on a dark screen. I've never noticed it durng the day
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda app-developers app
Thanks for that. Now I know its not just me. You really settled my nerves, I was about the be pissed. The screen is beautiful beside that. It is just when it is pitch dark and I am looking at something black, otherwise, if there is probably 25% of anything else that is lit on the screen I probably won't see it. I guess I just caught it on one of those rare occasions when I am using my phone in the pitch dark.
Do you happen to know what those threads were called? I am having trouble wording the issue exactly lol
Nooo that is top much. Yes all galaxies have that issue but I think yours is too much. Exchange it i would say
Its just like this, apparently called "ink marks" Last picture in the op here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1658601
Tbh I really only notice in landscape and not in portrait and the only ones I see are the ones on the left and the dot on the right if I do see them. I'd hate to take it back to get one with its own unique set of the same marks. Plus I rooted it and I'm not quite sure if the flash counter clicked , damn verizon
Finally I'm not the only one. It only happens with video and it doesn't matter out you play YouTube app browser or videos you have saved. And try recording and the play back is bloody red skill over the place. Best buy associates were freaking out with my old phone. Over had the gs3 replaced 3 times. And third times the charm. When life gives you lemons hope your within the 14 day trail period.

I thought the same thing until a week ago when watching something in the complete dark. For those that think their phone is perfect you'd have to check under the same circumstances to know for sure. A dark room and playing videos. I noticed it especially on netfix. I started a video and before the movie starts it goes to a black screen and thats when I first noticed. I do wonder if its all phones or if only a few of us have this defect

This is a defective samoled. While the glue blotches exist in nearly all displays, yours are especially bad. The fact that you can record them and actually see them while playing videos is the deciding factor here.
For example, I can see those too - but only in complete darkness and while the brightness is at max - any kind of video or soft keys wipe out those blemishes. In other words, those blotches should be invisible under any usage conditions. Otherwise, the quality control has passed a lemon, which is clearly your case.
Exchange that phone for a new one.
Like I said, I if there is anything on the screen I can't see it. I have the reason it looks do prominent in the pics is that I boosted iso and it exposed for the baclight. I had to try really really hard to get a picture of what was going on there
yes. i have the exact same problem. thinking of getting it replaced today.
heres what my looked like:
made it in paint
The black ink thing is a common issue but there has to be some extent to which it's too much. I usually don't notice it and I can forget about it but for those times I do, it is quite the let down. I'll probably take it to Sprint this coming week and see what can be done.
My screen...not the best picture but at least it shows the blobs. I could care less about the black marks towards the top of the image. It's just the ones on the bottom that bother me.

Ahh yours is much like mine. I have tbh, and I tried finding it today during the day and no lights on with brightness maxed and I could not. I think I am going to stop stressing about it as it is only visible in very limited situations. I thank you guys for helping me out with this and really settling my nerves to know I didn't just get a bad one and that it is quite a common issue with different variations.

i have to check mine now but either way if almost all units have it you may return it and get one that is worse

Should I return?

So my nexus seven was great out of the box. I was probably so excited that I didn't rly notice this to begin with but the back of it is off placed. And also there is a part of my screen that creaks when pressure is applied... So should I return and get another? If so should I call Google or Asus?
Galaxy S3
Any pic of back you describe? Do you mean not fastened down all the way?
If it isn't actually lifted and it only creaks when you press it deliberately, that's not worth returning in my opinion.
As for the back, like darin said, it's difficult to have an opinion without seeing it. Have you popped it off and on again to see if that fixes it?
To check if your screen is lifting, which is the most likely cause of your creaking sound, hold the device with the right side facing you. Look across the display and use the left bezel as a silver horizon line. If the black display is higher at any point, you'll be able to see it interrupt that silver line.
Here is an example of a perfectly flush display, looking across the device from the right side.

I don't see what you're referring to, but this isn't my tablet so I wouldn't know. This was a photo uploaded by a helpful user named drewden to prove that flush screens do exist.
Really hope you're not talking about the left bezel. That's kind of the whole point of the picture.

That bezel seems different from my C8 model. Mine no where near is raised that much on my device. Not sure if it is the way the photo is taken or not..
Mines basically flush with just enough to feel the bezel raised.

Looking really, really closely, towards the right side of the photo, I can maybe see a faint thread of chalky white about halfway across the screen, but why would anyone mention that?
If these guys can't tell the difference between the bezel and a scratch, I'm going to plug in my DSL modem next to the bathtub and log out.

Are you saying that when you look across the device from the right side, like in the picture, your black display eclipses part of the thin, silver bezel on the left side?
That would mean you have at least some screen lift.

Cool.
Make sure you get a decent shot of the horizon test detailed earlier. Unless your tablet is really weird, the others are less important.
Edit: I can see your entire bezel from both the right and left portrait sides -- can't tell which is which. As far as I can tell, your screen looks fine.
What makes you think that there's lift?

I still feel like there may be some confusion about what to look at from the right side.
Hopefully the OP will find this rigmarole about how to check for screen lift helpful. If none of this is applicable, I'm sorry for derailing your thread.
Once again, here is a photo taken by a user named drewd.
We're checking the left, but we're looking at the unit from the right. We're looking at the left bezel (on the far side) to see if the screen is high enough at any point to block it from our sight.
The thin, silver line of the left bezel is intact, and the perspective is low enough to be accurate.
Now, here is a low quality photo of my own second unit. I took this picture for reference during a Google Support call.
It is a very bad camera, but you should be able to see the silver line of the left bezel along most of the far side. I've drawn a circle around the general area where the screen eclipses the bezel. The perspective is higher than drewd's photo because I wasn't trying to show that my screen is flush. His angle would be more convincing for that purpose.
The lift of my second unit was indeed minor, and it turned out to be the least separated of the three units I received. In hindsight, I might have kept it, but now I wait for news that this issue has been resolved.
Hopefully this clears things up.
When there's something wrong come with the device, well, the answer is definitely YES. Just send Google an email and they will tell you everything you need to do.

Very minor lift. You can see it on the pictures a bit, they basically look like a shadow/overcast. It is quite minimal, only reason I noticed was because of this forum. You can also tell if you do a fingernail test around the edges.
If you can even call it lift - its not over the bezel just raised a bit in comparison to the rest of the unit.
To be honest - it was a bit worse a few days ago before I tested it for squishiness and been going away with normal use.
Sure, why not replacing it? They will send you a new device and once you received it, just send your old

[Q] is it just me or is the top bezel thicker than bottom (and other small worries)

I've been following the z2 eagerly, ever since the first leak and i had a fear that it it no longer symmetrical, i have done alot of analyzing of pictures and videos and it to me seems like the top bezel is EVER SO SLIGHTLY thicker than the bottom meaning theres no symmetry.
I have a ocd like obsession with design and symmetry, which is why i choose the z series since the first z, it also to me sadly seeme the z2 has been more rounded than the z1 which to me is a slight dissapointment.
Second off it seems both the back glass and the metal frame has gotten a bluish hue, from what i have seen i liked the z1's gun metal grey frame i don't understand why they changed it infact more black would be nice too, other videos show it in a more premium like silver which i like alot so it is hard to judge as many videos look different.
A positive thing is that it seems they got rid of that ugly plastic strip inside the metal frame that the z1 had, it ruined the design for that phone in my opinion and i adore the design of my z1 just hated that plastic.
other than these microscopic worries the phone seems to be my absolute dream phone inside and out.
I think its the SONY branding, sensors, camera and the black stripe of the speaker bar that gives the impression of a greater bezel up top.
Can't really tell you.
if you're really obsessed with symmetry, maybe you should bring a ruler when you about to buy it later

that the bottom one is like 0.5 mm or so longer they would be completely centered with eachother as i flipped the phone unless i am completely missing something
Looks like it is. Can't say it's a problem though. Xperia Z was the same and I only noticed it after a few days...

zz, Taking a longer much closer look at your example image of the bezel , I think your right , it's very tiny difference...but it's there .
It does not really bother me though, I'm much more OCD about keeping my phone in pristine condition, so as soon as I recieve mine it will be on with a front & back screen protector and case :silly:

oh this is not what i wanted to know due to my obsession
and i am ocd about EVERYTHING i spent hours yesterday looking up pictures and videos comparing them to eachother to get the right look of the frame some pictures show it with a dark like blue which is ok other show it with a purple silver like hue which to me is a little on the girly side but i need to see myself before i judge the phone is so perfect that i am nitpicking the heck out of it
the other small tiny worry is that it seems they wen't back to the blue like black glass like the original z
i liked the blue like frame on the original z so chances are i'll like z2 aswell
but WHY would they touch the already perfect z1 design they only needed to add the thinner bezels speakers and screen and get rid of that plastic the design was perfect as it was
if they even dare putting XPERIA in big letters at the front on their next flagship then i won't even bother even trying to consider that it would entirely damage the phone beyond repair for me
the z1 was so perfect but i guess i can't expect them to mae a phone after my taste the omnibalance design was almost that
edit:it all makes sense now they only reduced the bezel at the bottom not the top
which means the top bezel is the same thickness as z1
it all makes sense now

I read that the top bezel has to be that size to fit the camera module (camera module is too large to fit behind the LCD and keep the phone thin). So it makes sense that they can't shrink it. Good investigating!
Why are we even talking about this subject? If the bezel was bigger on one side..... who cares?

The OP? What is the purpose of your post? OP clearly said he's obsessed with this. I answered the poll out of memory but now I see it, it really is a tiny bit out of symmetry. I will possibly do my own analysis.
To you, OP. The edges still have the plastic, its just in perfect alignment with the metal so that the curvature is perfect. This was one of my favorite improvements in the phone design.
PS. I suggest meditation and relaxation techniques for your ocd.

Purple Tint Explanation

Before reading it try this.
1. Open camera and go to a place with light and long press the screen to lock AE & AF
2. Cover the lens, you won't have the purple tint anymore. No matter how hot your phone gets.
This is a fact you can try it yourself!
Now do it the other way around, open the camara and lock AE & AF with the screen completely covered (long press screen) and then try to take a normal photo. You will be impressed how much light the camera can take even with total darkness.
The camera components that they are replacing are just offering higher resistant to heat, which covers up the problem! but in the end the problem will appear again, hope they can solve this as it is a heat-software-hardware problem (the sensor is not defective though, it is just too exagerated and this problem normally appears when given heat is present).

This is actually an interesting find. I guess the camera software isn't calibrated properly and helps make the sensor problem even worse.

probably the ultrapixel isn't working correctly, there should be an option to disable UP in low light conditions, today I've cancelled the htc official repair I had, I'm too afraid after waiting 2 weeks my phone is dmged or has another new problem
I'm not sure why you would cancel it to be honest. Go and check the huge purple tint thread and see how many people with replaced sensors have the purple tint come back. Mine has been rock solid for months on end now, no reason not to get it fixed. My phone is even hotter than normal since it's summer time and it's fine in low light

So, that is the point, I suppose you were lucky and fine, but checking the service repair center they send it to here in Spain (Regenesis) you are lucky if you get it replaced at the first time and with no dmg.
Many people have been months sending it and getting it back in and it is a MUST to do a video and photos to your phone to proove if they do any scratches, I don't do that much photos and normally they are very good photos with light or flash in the night ^^ so I don't want to risk it and start a battle with htc having my phone replaced many times

I guess quality of service varies but Regenersis UK sorted my phone out quickly and efficiently. Took 4 working days including the day UPS came to my house to collect the phone. Exact same story for three friends I know. All of ours came back in good condition. I even got new speakers and the back of the phone replaced (had a few tiny tiny dents and beats logo was missing) so I can't really complain
man its right, when i locked AF the camera in low light is very dark and no purple issue, but no AF too for good photo. What can we do now for fixing this ??? It's now soft problem i think and need to find way.

I guess if we renounce to the ultrapixel stuff when there are low light conditions photos would be much worse but without the pink stuff.
I'm glad you were lucky I don't know if I selling it or try sending it..
@mariosanoguera I did not understand lock with screen completely covered. You mean cover screen while AF lock??

Cover camera then long press on screen and then uncover it.
It means HTC is covering there ass by just saying that camera module is faulty. Is it the time to say HTC bye bye??

sorry I edited my first post to make it clearer, this doesn't proove anything in fact it just a way of stopping the purple tint happen, but if in the future (when we are out of warranty and problem appears again) it is a software proof that it can be avoided without reducing the iso to 100 (which only takes good photos on good light conditions)

I still think it is still faulty under extreme light conditions, but they could easily cover it up by auto-disabling "ultrapixel" for those users who choose it, but in fact, its sad... this is the main reason why I acquired an htc one.

It's still a faulty sensor from the way I see it. Otherwise I'll need to keep a lightsource with me at night to lock the AF on at all times.
Now I use GPE rom and google camera. How can i lock AF & AE?

you can't
Question, after doing this , the pictures are taking with the AE FA lock on all the time ,
I Did it , but the phone still gets the purple tint
Even backwards to test , the phone still has it . But when the pictures are taken with the lock on , the tint seems to go away.
I'm I doing it wrong ?
The phone is using sense 6

The reason that this does this is very straight forward, and I was able to do the same thing on my nexus. All sensors have noise and when the sensor dips further into lowlight, the noise is more pronounced to the point where it is visible. The color of the noise is dependent on the white balance. These phones have an exceptionally sensitive sensor and auto adjusts ISO, white balance, and exposure. The result is the "purple" tint in low light at normal (5300k) white balance. You can fake other colors by hard setting white balance to another setting rather than auto. One can simulate the same thing by adjusting color balance on any camera-on-phone and as long as the your white balance is set, and the software boosts the iso/exposure level until the noise shows, that one will get it too.

How did you get yours fixed?
and how much did it cost?
Mine ahs the Purple tint Camera issue, plus my Volume button is wearing off, a few scratches and minor dents on the back as well...
was thinking of getting it fixed,
any idea how much it would cost?
regards

Phoned HTC and told them about the purple tint
They said they'd send UPS to collect the phone the next day
Few days later got an email saying the camera had been repaired
UPS returned it the next day.
All covered under warranty so it was free. I have no idea how much it would cost if out of warranty

Screen bleed?! Malfunction or not?

Sorry, just got my G3 a week ago, and I have to ask you guys, and girls, is this bleed on picture malfunction or is it normal for G3 screen?
On the left is my G2, and on right G3. Booth on full brightness.

right. i get that but if you turn them each down so 50% and 75% does the problem persist? how often to you actually have your screen at 100% day to day? and how often are you staring at huge black blocks day to day?

ok well from a quick check i noticed a few things...which led to a question.
1. where did you get the black background from?
i ask because i thought i would try a couple ways. i covered the lens with my finger first, i noticed when i did that i had to make sure i got the lens 1000% covered or i *would get a little bleed.* but not quite what your showing.
i then tried my black sheets which showed the same result
eventually i used a combo of my finger my sheet and a dark space and got it looking like i thought it should.
cranked up the brightness to 100% (which ive never done) and MAN that thing is painfully bright...got the picture up from gallery and went to the dark again. i DID NOT see the effect your seeing.....UNTIL i got a little off center, when i wasnt looking straight on i would get the EXACT same thing you pictured, and the more i tilted the phone the more i would get it....so IMO i doubt in every day use youll ever notice it, but mine does the same thing too so i dont think there would be any reason for a return....later today ill edit this all together with pics.
but dont worry, i think your fine.

Thanks.
I used done full-screen display test from playstore.
I kinda see it even in everyday usage, but that can be subconscious. Have no idea. Please try to make photo in complete dark, black wall, and on 100%. So we can compare. Thanks mate.
I've tested mine with Hiden Menu - Device test tool - LCD Test - Automatic Test/Manual Test
On D855 with different brightness and with dark room or in daylight the result is the same, the background looks without any temperatured color it just come from black to gray and white... Other colours also seem to be good. I think it is a malfunctional screen device. You should try to send it for warranty.
But you can also check before if you have move anything on Accesibility Screen Color Adjustment, If you have move anything there... then try to turn it off and make the test again.
(In my experience this is my first device with normal screen temperature without any spot color on dark/white backgrounds... I have managed HTC and Samsung devices before and HTC always was showin yellowish edges and samsung greenish spots).

It's just, like, brighter in lower right corner, than on rest of the screen. Purpleness of the screen is bad photo.

I can see on photo something on top of the screen too, but that's not an issue. Only bottom.
I will try to make a photo of my screen and post it here.
This screen bleeding is bothering me sometimes in real life usage, so I am thinking of returning mine, as I do have another week to return it.
