Quick question... - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After rooting your device, what steps did u take to make the phone faster?
I removed some bloatware of course, just the usual ones like TripAdvisor, Gmail and so on...
I was wondering what other apps I can do without on the phone?
And not just removing apps, is there any other way to de-clutter my phone and make using it a faster experience...?

{Q} Application Restore via Gmail

Does anyone know what it is in a ROM, that when you sign into Gmail, it downloads all your applications that were installed on your device? Ive noticed alot of ROM's lately that are lacking this feature, and was curious as to what allows a ROM to do this.
Thanks
Your market saves all your paid apps. The rest you have to have a backup with like titanium backup

It also happens in the Glacier.
My theory is this. the first time you sign into your Google account via a Android phone it picks up the phone model. and the first time you sign in it figures you just got that phone so it will re-download the apps to that phone. and once you change ROMs and resign in it think "hey this phone already as the apps" so it doesn't kick it to the new ROM.
In any case the best thing to do is use Titanium Backup.
Sounds like a good theory to me.

Check under settings /privacy /back up + auto restore. I believe that's what the initial setup access.
I don't like it, new rom = new app install, just easier to eliminate problems not related to rom.
[via XDA app]

I just bought this phone.

Couldn't resist myself seeing as I am now far too pissed with the crappy radio chip in the Gnex. Cost me 580 euros on my vacation here in Finland.

Best phone ever. Enjoy!
Enjoy man. I also had a GNexus previously, and I found that the hardware on SGS3 is so much better. Camera, storage, processor, everything is much better. You just have to learn how to deal with Samsung bloatware and be happy
right choice
I can live with TW for now.

You can always put a different launcher on the stock ROM

Removing bloatware requires you to edit Rom and that requires root

Please note he said deactivate, not remove. You can still freeze a lot of the bloat without rooting. Go into system settings - application manager - all. Select the bloat in question then select disable. The bloat will no longer be able to run and won't appear in the app drawer.

But a lot of the bloatware can be removed with root only. The easiest way imo is to root and use titanium backup to freeze them.

Yes I know you need root to remove it. He asked how to deactivate it without rooting. Deactivating != removing.

Nice tip Thanks
Does it get deleted though? I.e. does it free up memory?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Yes it does
Same action performed by titanium backup

Yeah, but just one thing, not everything is bloat, and blocking it is sometimes, or most times becomes an obsession rather than necessity.

Nope it doesn't free up memory. It's still there but unusable. Btw this option has been available in android since ICS, nothing new.

Simple proof of concept
do a benchmark
disable majority of heavy apps
benchmark again
again this tip will help people who does not want to root

Removing stock app after root.

Hi, Sorry if a bit of a noob question but is it safe to remove stock apps after rooting phone? Stuff like currents etc.etc. Thanks.
Depends on what app. Currents should be fine. Most of the Google apps should be removable with no repercussions.

Get Titanium and just freeze them. They don't take up that much space. That may prevent problems down the road when the next update comes along.
don't need Titanium to freeze them. can easily disable apps from app drawer - manage apps. also safe to disable are Chinese, Japanese and Korean keyboards and all those live wallpapers.

I did that but my phone is rooted and some guides are without root, not specifically for this model, or is naturally a short list.

Bloatware is bloatware doesn't matter if you're rooted or not. It just easier if you're rooted. And please, just freeze the bloatware don't delete it, until you're sure it won't affect your phone

I meant to type freeze, but i'm saying is there a list of all system apps that aren't beneficial and that you can freeze (Not a short list, but a moderate list).
I found something like this, but i'm not sure if its AT&T specific:
