I just bought this phone.

Couldn't resist myself seeing as I am now far too pissed with the crappy radio chip in the Gnex. Cost me 580 euros on my vacation here in Finland.

Enjoy man. I also had a GNexus previously, and I found that the hardware on SGS3 is so much better. Camera, storage, processor, everything is much better. You just have to learn how to deal with Samsung bloatware and be happy

Removing bloatware requires you to edit Rom and that requires root

Please note he said deactivate, not remove. You can still freeze a lot of the bloat without rooting. Go into system settings - application manager - all. Select the bloat in question then select disable. The bloat will no longer be able to run and won't appear in the app drawer.

But a lot of the bloatware can be removed with root only. The easiest way imo is to root and use titanium backup to freeze them.

Yes I know you need root to remove it. He asked how to deactivate it without rooting. Deactivating != removing.

Removing stock app after root.

Hi, Sorry if a bit of a noob question but is it safe to remove stock apps after rooting phone? Stuff like currents etc.etc. Thanks.

Depends on what app. Currents should be fine. Most of the Google apps should be removable with no repercussions.

Get Titanium and just freeze them. They don't take up that much space. That may prevent problems down the road when the next update comes along.

don't need Titanium to freeze them. can easily disable apps from app drawer - manage apps. also safe to disable are Chinese, Japanese and Korean keyboards and all those live wallpapers.

I rooted my S4 Active, now what....

I am still pretty new to android, but I can follow instructions, so I rooted the as4 Active.
I removed the bloatware, I think.
What now? What is worth my time to do?
Really all I feel like I need is to play emulators with a PS3 controller, any good free apps for that?

Yeah, I guess reading 100 pages of the same suggestions of how to and what I have already done is worth while.
Everyone says to root the phone, but I guess there is no real use.

The biggest advantages for me were to be able to run Titanium backup, ad block, Helium, Xposed and have read/write access to the system folder. With access to system, you can remove or disable apps you can't normally uninstall. You can also install modified system APKs like the dark dialer.
So there are a few advantages that let you have a more control control over your phone, but it is a few steps short of loading a full blown custom ROM in recovery.

One more question.
I've rooted and disabled know, but I keep getting this message. What's this about?
Also, I get FCs on a lot of apps either after backing out, or after using them a while. I'm completely stock aside from root and adaway

That would be Verizon Protect.. You can disable it, or download Titanium Backup and Remove it from your phone....

In Titanium Backup look for something that says Verizon and shows that Shield. Select and uninstall. Believe mine was called that, but I don't know why yours wouldn't be the same. You can also in the interim go into your apps on your phone and find that Icon and long hold, App Info, and Turn Off until you find the App to force Uninstall on TiBu

Did you get a chance to play with one of these @ BB? I didn't see a lot of bloat or really any honestly. Samsung Retail mode though, no idea what carriers will force.

Correct if you want to uninstall them, but you can "disable" bloat from the applications section in the settings to free up memory and to cut down on unnecessary processes without needing root.

I'm not sure how the US carriers will handle this issue, but all of my carrier-specific apps were uninstallable on my Korean Note 4. Samsung and Google services have been hit-or-miss. But then again, there was specific legislation passed here on this very subject last year.

Like that stupid flip board app.

Sprint has been pretty good about being able to straight uninstall all those useless programs they load once you activate. The rest has to be root uninstalled to remove. I've been using Samsung devices for awhile and most have to be rooted to remove their extra features.

Can't you just disable them? They'll still take up space but they won't run.

uninstalling some of the applications, especially from google or samsung could break other things seemingly unrelated, so much better way is to freeze them, but you need root. greenify has some option to stop apps from starting on boot up, not 100% sure, but I think it works even without root.

greenify is limited without root, but it is a start.

Does anyone know when the ATT note 3 was able to root?
