How to wipe the nexus 7 completely keeping the root - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi i wanna completely wipe off my nexus 7 as i dunno what stuff is eating my tablet space byt wanted to keep root
How it can be done ?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD

Factory reset will do most of the job for you....

yep factory reset will wipe the userdata partition not system partition so root will not be affected

You don't need to take care of it. You can root it anytime again.

Hi, pleasant...
Both of the above responses are true... a factory reset will not touch the system partition, thus you will still have root... and, in the hugely unlikely event should you loose root, it's trivially easy to re-acquire again...
* Fastboot flash a Custom Recovery; TWRP or CWM.
* Using that Recovery, flash Chainfire's SuperSU Root Updater .zip
-----------------------------------
"...i dunno what stuff is eating my tablet space..."
But before you do that.... don't you want to know what it is, exactly, that is 'eating your tablet space'? After all, it could happen again, at some point in the future.... unless you get to the root of the problem.
Checkout this app on PlayStore, DiskUsage for a very nice graphical overview of how your space is being 'carved up'.
Rgrds,
Ged.

Simple question, I have pictures videos and back ups that don't want deleted when I do a factory reset, do I need to back it up on my PC or????

Depends on what you are talking about if you mean while in a custom recovery then no you don't but if you are unlocking your boot loader or you are using a stock in rooted ROM and are just pressing factory reset from settings then yes you should back up

I would actually LIKE to delete everything when I install a new rom. I have used all the wipe data setting i could find in recovery and I always end up with a bunch of stuff left from the previous rom. Downloads etc.
Is there something I am missing?

Are you talking about the factory reset within Jelly Bean? If so, then that wipes everything as far as I know.

Most (all?) custom recoveries should have some type of option to format sdcard.
In CWM, the wipe data/factory reset option will *not* wipe your virtual sdcard.
You can do a wipe in recovery, and the /sdcard partition will remain intact. I was worried about this before unlocking my bootloader too
However when you unlock your bootloader *all* of your user data will be wiped from your tablet
This includes your apps, setup, homescreens, sdcard, photos. It will be like having a brand new tablet
The downloads folder is on your sdcard. You may be able to edit the updater script or something to wipe the virtual sdcard directory when you flash a rom

I did wonder why there was always stuff left over. I guess in some ways its handy. It just feels like doing an in place upgrade of windows rather than a clean install when theres old data still there.

LOL no, otherwise it would be too easy
You also cannot have the $25 credit twice, as in if you bought 2 N7's using the same google account
I had 2 because one was faulty and I only got 1 gift card
Wiping your tablet will not lose your $25 though, thats stored on your google account. You ca use it with any android device hooked up to the same google account.
Back again.
I know this is sort of the reverse of the OP but at least its related.
If the rom zip is on the sd card then how can you format it?
Or do you just do regular wipe, install then format sd?
I have Clockwork Mod Recovery 6
Is this written out somewhere else?
Yes, just do the regular wipes first, install the ROM, and then format the sdcard.

COMPLETELY wipe nexus 7

I've been running into storage issues with my nexus 7 and would just like to completely wipe all data on my device and act like its day one again. What method would COMPLETELY wipe all data?
I'm currently rooted and running kaos Droid 3.7.3. Would a basic factory reset do the trick? I know I've had to do one before flashing this rom... but I still had left over data. The storage on my device doesn't add up to what is actually on there.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda app-developers app
I guess you could format the whole thing if you want to COMPLETELY wipe it.
Do a factory install from https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#nakasi This will wipe everything.

THIS like uber sad(but with userdata, not user data)..or at least a format data\internal in TWRP recovery that erase also data\media.i'm in the same boat with my gnex, and did this some hours ago
This is a old thread but i stumbled upon it today. I learned a lot from this and can now flash manually. Everything went pretty smooth.

[Q] Downgrade to 4.3?

You can flash the factory image but you'll lose all your data. Or you can use wugs toolkit and use flash back to stock option and it will do it for you but you still lose all data. Are you sure you want 4.3? 4.4 is smoother for me

So to be clear, even if the N10 is rooted, in order to go back from 4.4 to 4.3 one has to flash the factory image? Wiping the device and restoring a 4.3 Nandroid backup of a previous 4.3 ROM will not work?

Yes it will work but your progress since that nandroid is lost if you dont backup. You can also flash a 4.3 rom. Or mod the Factory image to not wipe your SD.

If 4.4 is more laggy for you than 4.3, you're doing something wrong.
Maybe just trying a factory reset of 4.4 might cure it.

I've tried factory reset with no luck. Still laggy.
Thank you all for your replies. It is really appreciated.
So what would be the easiest way for me to return my device to 4.3 using Google's factory images? Sorry for being a little annoying. I don't want to brick my device
My Nexus 10 is also more laggy on 4.4. Strange.
Is it laggy immediately after the factory reset or after you've set up your apps?

Yes it is laggy even after reset and reflashing the factory image with wugs toolkit. When the screen rotates, there is some stutter. I'm back on 4.3 and it's much better for me.
Thanks to abdel12345 for recommending wugs toolkit. It was an easy process
I installed via the factory image, and have no issues with 4.4. If anything, it's better.
Hi,
i go now also back to 4.3 because Simpsons is not playable on 4.4! It's soooo laggy. But only this Game.

Yep I've figured out that the resulting system when you do 4.3---OTA---4.4 is a slower system than if you do a stock flash install. I've also now unclicked the "backup and restore" to not carry over anything.
Prove it yourself, by all means... if you're going to flash down to 4.3, flash to 4.4 first, try it and then flash to 4.3 if its still laggy, but I betta 5cents you'll find it better. That one game - Simpsons - just install it and benchmark.
As I do not know what is the cause of this lag-from-upgrade, I now also don't click on the "backup and restore" to make mine as vanilla as possible. I've just now done this to my N4 also having found it better having done it on my N10 yesterday.
I been using WUGS NRT to do unlock (one time), flash+unroot, and root.
Am thinking of downgrading as well..
Mine is completly stock..but after updating..i get graphical artifacts..battery charge time has doubled...it lasts 25% less...mic is badly placed even before
Google seems to in denial with nexus 10 problems..did not exect this from google

When my n10 Finish's charging but if still hook up to pogo charger it becomes laggy... Try that if y have pogo chargsr . this does not occur w USB charging.
Anyone successfully bk to 4.3 w.o losing data?
Hi,
If you ever wondered if there was a way to restore stock without losing all your data, there's a way, which is not hard too... Just do the following:
Reboot in your custom recovery and then factory reset your device
Reboot system
Now download the Factory ROM and move it (the img files) to your adb/fastboot folder
Open a cmd there and do the following (remember to have the USB Debugging on)
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash cache cache.img
fastboot reboot
Now wait for it to boot
Hope this helps you guys who want to downgrade to 4.3 and were afraid of losing your data (remember, the recovery still deletes your apps data, but you can backup it with an app like Titanium Backup).
I may write an script to do this soon... If you want you can wait for it (but it may be delayed up to this weekend).

That is useful to know but how is it any easier than simply copying to Wifi NAS or connecting external storage, copying it out and back in again? You'd be backing up anyways as a good techie. As you say it deletes everything bar data.
FYI if you did ever want to WRITE to NTFS volume then selinux mode changer app is what I use.

In my case this one is way easier, as I have almost 32GB used, and it takes a whole lot time to just backup, who says copying it back. I know it's good to always backup, however in some cases (like mine) it's a way easier method to do like I explained above.
This is just an alternative method I'd like to share, I actually used this many times already, due to soft bricks, then I can't simply plug a external hard drive on my recovery and it would take ages to backup my data via adb. This is the best unbrick method IMO, as you're installing fresh ROM without the need of formatting your data, and works as well with installing a new ROM .
Just my point of view hehe

CWM doubt

Hey Guys, I have a Nexus 4 running on stock 4.3 rooted.
I copied the CM 11 M Snapshot files and using CWM wiped everything. as it turns out it also wiped my sd ext. Thankfully I had a backup and got all my data back. Is there a way so that it doesnt wipe the Sd ext? I had a Nexus S before this and it didn't get wiped everytime I flash :crying:
Anybody?

I understand his question just fine...
There is no "sd ext" on the current Nexus devices. It is simply called sdcard. The sdcard shouldn't be erased unless you format /data, because /sdcard is located at /data/media. In the future, just use factory reset in recovery and the sdcard won't be wiped.

I did the factory reset. But my entire media also got wiped. Although it doesn't happen with twrp. I guess I'll stick with twrp then. Thanks anyhow.

Impossible, wipe data/factory reset doesn't format sdcard. Under mounts/storage (if i remember right) you can just delete media files.

Note 3 - SM-9005 - How to root in 2018 - help needed!

Hello Gentlemen,
Let me try to keep this short.
I got a new Android phone recently and had planned to port all my app backups from the N9005.
As things happen, I ran the Samsung app for backup and did a factory reset before checking the same.
The backup made a fool out of me, nearly all the crucial stuff is missing.
So now I need to recover the settings from the post "factory reset" Note 3.
What would be the fastest and least painful way to-
a. Root the SM9005;
b. Recover the backup (XML files for tasker, Aquamail, Biz Calendar and so on);
c. Unroot the app and be done with it.
I need to unroot as the last step as I plan to have the phone loaded with a kid friendly UI and keep it for the kids for long trips. Do not want anything wary taking over it.
Any suggestions and help is welcome!
Thanks,
CKhurana

Yeah, I know. But a recovery is possible AFAIK until the free space is overwritten? Just like any disk based data recovery happens?
Can you help me with options on the root?

Well the simplest one without hassle is either flashing recovery IMG and rooting via SuperSU.
