[Q] theming question mf3 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

HI
I will be going to AT&T from Sprint at the begining of the month. I have done alot of reading on the s4. my wife will be getting one and i theme all her roms for her. here is my question. has any one that is on mf3 rooted tried to adb pull an apk theme it and then adb push it. or will that cause the phone not to boot. would like to know because she will not use safestrap. all she wants is a pink rom her way. any advice would be great. And yes i can deal will .odex apks. that is not a problem. just not have seen in any of the treads that some one has tried this old school way of theming.

Would like to know this too

[Q] MDL upgrade with extra .APK

So I finally pulled the trigger and followed the instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277480
I am using Shabby's MDL and am absolutely floored by the huge difference in size differences from MDC to MDL. However I am curious about a few differences between the MDC. First let me say that everyone that has worked on this (Shabby, SXTP, Mudavo, etc) Thank you.
Now I am a newbie, but I am trying to educate myself, so please be patient while I ask questions. Under the Application Manager I am seeing a few apps (Com2uSPoker, Match3VS ) for example. I've already frozen Samsung Knox, and SEAndroid with Titanium Pro, but I'm wondering what the issue would be with me to remove some of these APKs all together (TripAdvisor and Swype for example)
Ideally I would like to do what I use to with the HTC and say pull the apks I don't use and put in ones that I like such as NovaLauncher over the EasyLauncher that is there. I am however very paranoid of having my brand new shiny turn into a brand new door stop.
Any advice or articles that you guys can point my way would be very appreciated. So my question is this, can I do all of the things I mentioned here? Would anything I do here be extremely bad?

Check out the Force Rom thread, there is a list of all of the safe to remove APK's as well as download links for all of them if you want to reinstall them.

Make sure you use shaggy kernel for wifi fix. ForceRom rom disables it for some reason.

Nah I'm sticking to the modified stock kernel. I did notice that some of my quadrant scores dropped when I killed some of the apps. Weird, but I'll figure it out.

Debating on rooting my S4

Hi everyone! I just upgraded to the AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy S4. Before I had the original Galaxy Note. I've rooted and loaded custom ROM's on all my previous Android devices (Captivate, Inspire 4G, Galaxy S II, and Galaxy Note), but I'm debating on rooting this device. It's running great on the stock ROM.
Has anyone else debated this? If so, did you go ahead and root and loaded a ROM then regret it or were you glad you did it?
You can run it absolutely stock and still be rooted. Rooting gives you the advantage of certain apps that require it, as I'm sure you know, such as Titanium Backup, Root explorer and others. Plus ability to get rid of AT&T apps you never do or never will use. fwiw
Root it! You want regret it. The possibilities are endless. And if you do prefer a stock like rom, well believe me there are GREAT custom stock like roms that these great devs have put together that run flawlessly with added benefits. Hope this helps. Happy Rooting

even if you plan to keep the stock ROM, its worth it to root so you can uninstall the AT&T bloatware and remove the AT&T splash screen on start-up.

I am on stock with root. I rooted it using Adam's casual only to have TiBu work. I froze all ATT bloats and some google and samsung apps. The stock is very fine for me.
Now I am debating to flash Paranoid rom to try their multiwindow and halo features...
Thanks for all the input everyone, I appreciate it. Knowing me I'll end up rooting it and loading a ROM since I can't leave stuff alone. HA!
Does anyone know if there's a ROM out there that someone has gotten Bluetooth Tethering to work? That's one thing I miss from ICS on my Galaxy Note.
Hey gk
In same boat, been flashing roms hundreds of times for over 3 years from early Nexus One days. Most of the reasons were to get newer OS's without waiting. However, one of the reasons I got the S4 was it already has the latest as in 4.2.2.
One thing I have learned as most of us have is there always seems to be something not 100% on each rom for some folks. Goes with the territory as we know. Although, I have been lucky in that area. Maybe due to lots of reading and proper pre-install wipes. Hats off to all the devs though for their long and tiresome hours giving us these great roms.
My concern, since this is early on with the S4 and no unlocked bootloader, are our chances higher to have issues.
My phone with all it's "gimmicks" is running fast and perfect--NO issues. I also would like TiBu and eventually a custom recovery for nandroids even if I don't flash a custom rom. Used both CWM and TWRP in the past. Also, Amon_Ra. All worked great for me.
But, like you and others will probably root and flash a custom recovery anyway.
Damn Samsung for making this so tough of a decision--
I was in same position lol I've been flashing andneven Ade a few Roms but ya know its cool and all but its a hassel sometimes enough for me to be stock! There's no reason IMO to flash anything this phone is packed to the gills with features already and its on a very new os so I feel like I wanna root and flash away but have found no reason to YET key word there and of course its purely my own standpoint

Root it! You can get new features before they come to your carrier. ... I debated it and told myself I would stay rooted but run stock rom.... now they figured out ways to bypass the bootloader and flash roms and im back to crack flashing lol. ..
Yup. I thought I wouldn't root this thing. That lasted a week. Then I told myself it's fine the way it is, I don't need to flash a rom. That lasted 3 weeks. I'm not a flashaholic though. I usually pick one and stick with it for a while.
You think it runs fine until you've rommed it and added a kernel. Then you realize you had no idea how fine it could be.

I wouldn't ever even own a phone that I couldn't root. It just gives you freedom over your phone. Again you don't NEED to run a custom rom to be rooted, but check out some of the TW custom Tom's that just take the phone to another level but still being stock

I was a flashaholic on the captivate, and S II. I loved trying new ROMs like Miui and AOKP. But, since I got the Note II and now the S 4 I don't have that desire. My only reason for rooting usually was TiBu, and only from flashing so often. Without flashing a new ROM each week I had little need for restoring apps. After three weeks I finally rooted and started trying ROMs on this phone. It was about the same for my Note. I really like TouchWiz, and miss some of those features on AOSP based ROMs. I don't see the performance need for custom ROMs on either of these phones like I did on the older phones. I guess it just came out of boredom, in the end.

Well, I finally gave in and rooted--knew I would
Used Adam's Casual--very easy--much more so than my HTC phones
TiBu and Nandriods already in use
Next step roms--
Still haven't rooted yet. I probably will over the weekend. Why can't I leave stuff alone? HA!

[Q] Safestrap

Ok, SO Im a bit of noob when it comes to the SG4. I have fully rooted and mod'd several SG3s and kindle fire/ fire HDs. So I'm not entirely new to the rooting and modding process. Here is my problem…I have been forced to a SG4 and been able to achieve a good root. I want to install a Custom ROM but like everyone else...KNOX and Samsung's locked boot loader are preventing me from being able to do so. Then I came across a guy that had a custom rom loaded on his SG4 and when I asked him how he did it all he said was Safestrap. I have been trying to find out how to install this on my phone but I can't seem to find any thread that gets right to the how. I have downloaded Boot Menu S and every time I try to install safestrap it stops running and closes the app. Could someone please point me in the right direction.
Go to the Safestrap thread in the Development section, it'll be on the first page. The link to the latest one for 4.3 is on Hashcode's goo.im folder. Read through the first few pages and the last few pages to get a idea of what to do and then on the last few you can see what people are getting to work and find the MK2 modules.

The s4 is a lot less fun than the s3 was. No custom roms unless you have a launch model that was never updated, no custom recovery, no unlocked bootloader. Completely different animal.

Any help for hotspot hack if I stay stock?

If you flashed a proper lokified recovery everything is pretty much the same as the gnex. Format system, data, and cache. Then flash whatever rom you want. It's also a good idea to backup your EFS partition. There is a flashable zip in the development section that will make a zip of those partitions.

According to that there should be a option in my version of twrp, I think it was like 2.6.3.3 also there is a option in freegee to backup efs. .in quick terms what exactly is it for and place it on pc for a just in case?

Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45868740 .
Also, I've gone back and forth a lot between stock recovery and custom. I have had some poor luck flashing some mods. I am currently running rooted with stock recovery and don't miss a thing. I use g2 xposed for tweaks and have added a number of mods manually (hotspot, lg browser that works in qslide, split window). For mods that flash in recovery i have had a lot of success opening the zip, reading the update script and performing the actions manually (for split window i downloaded an app for build.prop modding). No regrets. I also found that i can perform the factory reset and don't lose any of the permanent mods I made (i.e. non g2 xposed mods). Didn't even lose root (superuser app in system\app).
I've noticed a lot of former gnex users jumped to the g2 (myself included). Must be that 2 year upgrade cycle. I loved (and still have) my gnex, but this phone blows it out of the water (the screen alone... amoled what?).
Good luck and enjoy!

Thanks for the info, and I feel you on the love for the gnex but man it just has nothing on this phone...at all really, although I will say it spoiled me in the flashing dept,I don't think I ever checked a single md5 the whole time I had it. I never used xposed on the gnex so forgive me..but what would be something I'd want to possibly change through the g2 xposed module?

It's safe. A few times i ended up with the persistent "android is upgrading" message on every boot, but I'm pretty sure that was more from the mods i was trying. Really bad luck with flashing, can't tell you how many times i perform the Verizon return to stock procedure. Thought i actually bricked it once, but saved it. You are right about the gnex, unbrickable. I kept it as my insurance in case I ever actually brick this (they even have a fully functioning kitkat for it free of graphics glitches).
As far as g2 xposed, it can modify most anything you could want to, not to mention there are other mods for the xposed framework. I also never knew about it before my g2. You can modify the nav bar (height, # buttons, assign buttons, color, glow, get rid of it), modify the status bar (hide system icons, prevent certain notifications, change time/date format) and many other things. Costs $1 for all the features (worth it), free for some. A new version was just uploaded to the play store today. If you just install it, it will walk you through getting the xposed framework.

Yeah, reading it again it does sound pretty bad. Just so you know, i was trying to keep with the stock os (not even a custom rom based on the stock os). I think you are fine if the very first thing you flash is a custom rom.

I came from a long line of Nexus devices and the stock rom is awesome FWIW.
Just root and install Xposed G2 Settings. Change the DPI from 480 > 400 too. Much better.
im taking the leap to g2 tomorrow from my current gnex i still didnt quiet understand this "lokified" term. so lokified is a kernel/rom that we can flash ? is there anything called unlockified or nonlockified ? im a little lost, plz assist me if its not so much trouble

Loki is just the hack used to root I think. Its a script that does the work on your device. I think we need Loki enabled recoveries that can use and utilize the script.
I came from a Galaxy Nexus too. Its a tad different, since you root first, then install recovery. Root requires running a bat file from your PC where it copies the Loki script. Recovery is downloaded and flashed with FreeGee from the Play Store.
But honestly, like I said before, the stock ROM is pretty amazing. Gots lots of bells and whistles no found on AOSP ROMs. If I flashed anything it would be a Flex ROM only because its like Stock+.

oh good to have people from gnex here , thanks for the explanation. so basically after we root a script (loki thing) is stored in the phone somewhere which allows flashing of roms ! correct? , seems like i gotta read up. post any links if possible im going through the general section and the d802 section as well
You new guys coming over (that's funny, I haven't had the phone a week yet) need to give the stock ROM a chance. Run it rooted so you've got the access and capabilities, install G2 Xposed at a minimum, and go from there. I came from a Rezound I had running CleanRom and pretty heavily tweaked to my liking. The ONLY things I've done to my G2 since getting it on Sunday were to Root, Selectively Debloat, Install G2 Xposed and tweak, and install Apex Launcher because I like having the multipage scrollable lower dock, and if you use G2 Xposed to shorten the height of the navbar, you get an unsightly gap between the navbar and dock unless you use a different than stock launcher.
Doing all the above, the ONLY thing I've lost is the stock pinch out to show the desktop feature. Not a big loss. I had to install screen locker and set double tap in Apex to lock the screen so it still functions exactly as knock off, and knock on was unaffected.
I see absolutely no reason to install a custom rom unless you absolutely MUST have Kit Kat. Most of the aftermarket ROM's I've seen have a "what doesn't work" list. I'd rather have it all work.

[Q] Telus version of the s5 and custom roms

Hello all
I recently upgraded from a sg2x I had it rooted and only had lbe privacy guard installed to manage pesky permissions and a few apps to trim the bloat ware.
My problem is that the s5 while it is s great phone has so much crap on it I literally have no idea where to start with trimming the fat. Just wondering if there are any ROMS availablethat do most of that for you? Pretty new to the whole scan and just thought I would ask. I would also be very interested to know if lbe privacy gaurd is still a viable permission limiting app. Sorry if I missed the answers in the forums somewhere but I have been having a hard time finding info specific to the Telus model of the S5 (SM-G900W8)
I have had the phone for one day and have had enough apps download on there own with very questionable permissions it has made me want to go back to the S2x and not bother with an upgrade. More insidious software on these things that enough. Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers
I should also add that I have found the rooting guide but haven't done so yet as I am afraid of getting to crazy deleting bloat. I never used a rom just ran stock s2x and never updated it. Am curious to try something new in the form of a custom rom. I don't really use the phone for anything but music email and banking. Again any help would be greatly appreciated.
