Hi there! My name is Ben and im owning this nexus 4 phone for a month more or less. Since I bought it this forum has been an awesome place to look for answers as my last phone ran android 2.1. A genius friend of mine installed the paranoid android ROM on my phone for me and I'm very happy with all the tweaks. One thing that keeps bothering me though is that ever since I got the phone, when I try to set a new wallpaper, despite the nice sketch of how it's going to look horizontally an vertically on the phone's screen, it crops only the left side of the picture as a wallpaper, it comes out pixelated and swiping home screens doesn't scroll the wallpaper image. I've tried looking it up online, tried to mess with the phone settings, PA settings, launcher settings, but I just couldn't find a way to solve this. Ive tried the image 2 wallpaper app but it still doesn't put the wallpaper the way I set it and just crops only the left side, just less pixelated. I assume this isn't normal? as I said the problem existed even before the PA ROM was installed and that only confuses me more. Thanks in advance if you can help me! B
p.s. I'm running stock PA launcher, only used it to reduce the amount of home screen pages (now i have 3)
jellybean 4.3 with PA 3.99.

Got things working well and quite impressed with with NC and CM7 nightly with D's OC kernel. A few things ellude me?
1. Can someone please detail how to boot into CWM. I press and hold power + n for 8 seconds, and then release n, then release power. Nothing. What should I be seeing?
2. Long time Launcher pro user on my Epic. Does it work well on nc? Seems like icons are small and I need to add more rows and columns. Do must people run stock res or alter it somehow to make more readable?
3. Soft buttons seem a little small. What's the best app to make usable soft keys.
4. Maybe some of these display issues are better with a theme of some sort? Might try one... what's ur fav? Don't really care about fancy...just something that makes navigating through android more forgiving.
5. Playing around with D's new volume app. Seems like that will become standard equipment. Any other "must have" apps/tweaks?
6. Phone/sms... how usable is this thing for making calls/sms? What apps/accounts work best?
7. Have about an inch and half row of pixels that seem weird. Most noticable while sliding up the notification bar...thought it was a scratch at first...kinda greenish looking and thin. Is that common? I could go back to stock and get replacement... bought a week ago. Barely noticeable...
Thanks.... just trying to get this thing set up sweet for my son. Might need to go get one for myself!

1. Can someone please detail how to boot into CWM. I press and hold power + n for 8 seconds, and then release n, then release power. Nothing. What should I be seeing? If you have it flashed to eMMC from Rom Manager, then you should boot while holding both buttons, after a couple seconds, then release power only and continue holding n till you see CWM appear.
2. Long time Launcher pro user on my Epic. Does it work well on nc? Seems like icons are small and I need to add more rows and columns. Do must people run stock res or alter it somehow to make more readable? I've used it everyday since I have had my NC. It is very quick and I have had no issues with it. Customize to your hearts content.
3. Soft buttons seem a little small. What's the best app to make usable soft keys. The CM7 tablet tweaks from mad murdoc included in the ROM are very very usable. You can change the dpi from stock 161 to anything above, instantly making everything larger.
4. Maybe some of these display issues are better with a theme of some sort? Might try one... what's ur fav? Don't really care about fancy...just something that makes navigating through android more forgiving. I like and am currently using Purple Punch by Upward Spiral. List of his themes here. These are also available to install straight from the Market.
5. Playing around with D's new volume app. Seems like that will become standard equipment. Any other "must have" apps/tweaks? I always choose to install Cachemate for Root Users and Adfree and adbWireless pretty much instantly on any new rooted android device. CPUspy is also a nice one in that it lets you see if your Nook is actually sleeping or not.
6. Phone/sms... how usable is this thing for making calls/sms? What apps/accounts work best? Calling is unheard of I believe. Texting would be easy with Google Voice or another "textfree" type application
7. Have about an inch and half row of pixels that seem weird. Most noticable while sliding up the notification bar...thought it was a scratch at first...kinda greenish looking and thin. Is that common? I could go back to stock and get replacement... bought a week ago. Barely noticeable... It was an issue of just a line of missing pixels in the Notification Tab. Nothing to be worried about. It is not there in newer nightlies.

Answers in bold, hope it helps. Other forum members will probably add their say in.
Two things I will add:
1. I use Launcher Pro daily on my Nook Color. I think its almost a must with its ability to set so many icons in a row (in the paid-for version).
2. The issue with everything being small is due to our screens having a low natural DPI (160). A tablet like a Galaxy Tab is set on a much higher DPI (220+) for older eyes. Since your son is using it and not you, let him try it out with a low DPI before you mess with it. If you still want to increase it, use the LCD density program from the market.

Thanks..
1. I played with ADW for a bit, but went back to L Pro. I had to use my paid version to make some widgets fill all the rows and columns I made. It really is versatile...
2. Thanks, I'll def look for LCD density in market and give it a try.
Thanks for the answers above.
1. Yeah all is on eMMC.. I've scene the boot sequence described so many different ways. Will try yours!
3. Will try the DPI adjustment
4. Will check out Purple Punch theme. Looks Cool. Learned about Theme Switcher app that came with CM7, and tried the Honeycomb look.
5. What is Cachemate? Love cpu spy, and my nc is sleeping like a baby!
6. Can't seem to get very far with GV texting. In the setup It seems to be looking for a phone?
7. Updated the nightly and the row of pixels is still there. I can still see it besides the notification tab. Think I'm going to try going to stock and see if I notice it.
Thanks again!

The pixels is next to the notification tab? You should take a picture of that. Could be a hardware problem.

It's a horizontal line about 2/3 of the way up the display, starting about 1/3 of the way from left side. Very thin, and about 3 inches long. Slightly greenish tint and brighter toward the left. Most noticable on black background (like when sliding upt the notification bar). It's even noticable from CWM (when I'm able to boot into it!)
btw the key combination u mentioned above boots into uboot or something I know nothing about!

Definitely sounds like a hardware issue, as in it could be a line of hot/stuck pixels. I would restore to stock and see if it is still there, if it is, take it into a B&N store.
And yes, the uboot is/was a new edition to the nightlies not to long ago. It makes dual boot's and booting to recovery really easy. To boot into recovery make sure to select
Boot Device: eMMC
Boot Mode: Recovery
Boot now
There is just a simple key press to boot right into recovery, but I can't say I know it exactly.
I have been happily running CM 7.0.3 (with the default ADW launcher) for a month now and it was only now I thought about tempering with the wallpapers (hah !). Anyways, whenever I load a 1200 x 1024 wallpaper, it really zooms out in portrait and appears with two black stripes in the Landscape mode. Have gone through all kinds of solutions but to no avail namely:
- Apps like "Wallpaper set and save", Flickie etc. - all of them suffer with the same issue
- Restarted 5-6 times
- Saved the 1200 x 1024 .png files in EMMC / My Files / Wallpaper but doesn't help since CM7.0.3 doesn't have a "Home Launcher" or Settings > Home > Set Wallpaper or a direct Homescreen "Wallpaper Chooser" app like my Samsung Galaxy Pro for example.
Will be grateful if anybody can help me out - am also surprised I did not find this exact problem mentioned in the forums at all - I can't be that unique !
Thanks,
Ranjan
You can't just long press the home screen > Wallpapers > Select wallpaper from " " ?
Worked on every Android device I have owned, including my Nook Color. Perfect wallpaper size would be 600x1024.

No, CM7.0.3 doesn't give an option to "Select Wallpaper from"...Did you have a CM Nook color or stock-rooted one ? Wallpaper size I am sure of 1200x1024 works the best - have gone through multiple posts on this forum and others .

Running CM7 nightlies. Have been since they were first released. Been setting wallpapers the same way for months now, even on regular android devices. It does give that option when you are holding down your finger on a blank spot on the home screen. It has too.

That sounds like the behavior of the built-in gallery app. At some point when you set your wallpaper are you selecting Gallery? Or is Gallery the only picture viewer on your device?
QuickPic works a lot better for portrait mode, it lets you adjust the cropping. Iirc, it doesn't work well for landscape, because it puts in the black bars. Wallpaper Wizardrii is a little fiddly, but otherwise works well with both portrait and landscape.
This problem has been mentioned in the forums atleast once. I know because I asked it. lol No worries though its probably not tagged. Anyways like the poster above said Quick Pick does a much better job.

Dunno why its missing on my device, it only gives me option to set "Cyanogenmod Wallpapers" / "Gallery" / "Live Wallpapers" - both Gallery and Cyanogenmod suffer from the issue I laid out above.
@akaCat, IFLATLINEI: Thanks for the help, doesnt help me though , want good landscape display. I think the issue is somehow the Wallpaper is not scrolling in portrait mode as well (it used to earlier), even though the option is enabled in the ADW launcher settings. Since it is not scrolling it is essentially showing a 1 portrait page image which it rotates in landscape and hence the black screen. I wish this could be resolved !!
Ok I'm going to bring this one back because the same is happining to me now. It worked before! Is there a definitive fix for this anywhere? I see a lot of pleas for help but no answer???????
I started using the free app in the market: Wallpaper Set & Save. Goes in at the correct aspect ratio and resolution (assuming your wallpaper file is correct ahead of time and saved in png format).
I recently bought the Moto Xoom and I love it. However, when I wanted to personalize it and change the wallpaper I discovered that it has only a very limited number of wallpapers to choose from. I tried to set an image as a wallpaper nd it would either get stretched or cropped and the end result would be plain ugly. So I tried to find a solution online and it be ame obvious that other Honeycomb tablet users also have the same problem. There were three solutions offerd:
Using Wallpaper Wizardii. This method worked somewhat but the wallpapers se by the app would stil lack clarity and the wallpaper would behave strangely when turning the screen.
Setting a wallpaper with Waterize. I haven't tried this method but saw people reporting the same issues as with the first method.
Lastly, some people suggested using the write size fir the downloaded images before setting them as a wallpaper. Turns out the correct image size for a wallpaper for a 1280x800 screen is 1920x1408. The you would set the image as wallpaper by stretching the crop area to include the entire image.
Well, I tried the last method and it also rendered to be far from ideal as once you try setting the wallpaper by stretching the crop area to the entire image, it would cut off the top of the image. I read other people could not set the wallpaper right either. I was desperate until I found the solution, which works perfectly. Here it is:
Follow method three but in PORTRAIT MODE. That is, download your 1920x1408 image, press the plus button on the top right of your home screen, choose Gallery, then stretch the crop area to include the whole image. Again, the key is for you to turn your device into PORTRAIT MODE while cropping.
Hope this helps.

Good info! I have been meaning to make a little something like this, as I have been doing the same exact thing for a few months now on my 3G Xoom. Indeed, the end result is a real high def wallpaper without all that cropping nonsense. This should be something that can be done naively on Android. We want high def wallpapers, not a cropped up one. Maybe they will do that in the near future. ICS anyone? Hopefully.
For me, the best way to set a high def wallpaper without cropping has to be from MultiPicture Live Wallpaper.
tried multiple times and it still does not work... Any other suggestions?
Same here the above method did not work for me either. Also multi live wallpaper does work but it lags alot and drives me crazy.

Maybe lag is not the right word, when I use multi live wallpaper I use one pic, no transition, and auto memory. What drives me crazy is when I am switching screens either right or left it is jerky. If this is not happening to you could you share your settings? Maybe there is a issuewith my xoom. I am
Rooted running stock 3.2 3g rom and kernel . Thanks in advance.

Your third method while cropping the wallpaper in Portrait Mode worked perfectly for me! The other methods I had tried to no avail. I had to set up a company background logo for our tablets and android would force me to crop them and here I was wondering why it asked me to crop an image that was exactly the dimensions of the screen. Thank you!
Simple Image Wallpaper Free is an app that solved the problem for me ...

I've recently flashed Tytung's Beta10 rom and when I set a wallpaper(HD) it appears as its good, but when I reboot the phone (Turn it off) it turns blurry or somewhat zoomed in.... is this an issue or am I doing something wrong? (More specif I used a nonscrollable HD pic from an app. ) Thanks in advance!
I had a similar issue with beta10, the wallpaper was not covering the whole screen. I just chose another one from the ones that came with ICS and this solved the problem. Try changing the wallpaper.
My thing is that I set a wallpaper, when I do it's perfect I crop it so the scroll thing wont bother me, but when I reboot, it blurrys...or it seems zoomed in as if the whole wallpaper was set -_-
I have the same issue... chose a wallpaper and always it zoomed in...
I can only see the left side of my car
I Just got a ZTE ZMax Pro (Z981) today from MetroPCS overall the phone is great but im having a weird issue when setting my wallpaper, when viewing images in the gallery or previewing to set the wallpaper everything looks fine but when the image is a wallpaper i notice a slight change in the color like a slight green tint.
preview images below edit: cant post images... any idea what could be causing this ? Using Stock with Nova Launcher, Color Correction is off.
This is a minor problem and isnt a deal breaker to me but if its fixable it be nice.
Any help or input would be appreciated, thank you.

Have you played with your screen anamation in developer options it will change visuals as well as if you have a adaptive brightness set u may just b seeing rough version or a installed app affecting you , I use Nova without issue on the z981 ,it preforms sexy like a unlimited data mod lol , and it may make a diff if you are using free version or paid lite may have bugs I'd try my custom launcher c if it has a better effect or check , check all you nova visuals you may have simply made a mistake in display preference good luck
Thanks for the input, i had animation scale to off, and reverting it back to 1x and restarting did not fix the issue, also playing with the nova animations and tinkering with settings didnt fix it, im using nova prime, tried with the stock launcher also gives me the darker wallpaper, im not sure what it is, because when im looking at the image to set it the colors are fine, its not until its a wallpaper that its darker, like i said it isnt horrible after awhile i dont even notice but its just odd..
what is this custom launcher you speak of?
and yes this phone is pretty amazing, i was little bummed at first because the blade was out of stock where i went but upon further review im happy i got this, could care less about the camera.. on another note can we be expecting android 7.0 in the future ?
