Got things working well and quite impressed with with NC and CM7 nightly with D's OC kernel. A few things ellude me?
1. Can someone please detail how to boot into CWM. I press and hold power + n for 8 seconds, and then release n, then release power. Nothing. What should I be seeing?
2. Long time Launcher pro user on my Epic. Does it work well on nc? Seems like icons are small and I need to add more rows and columns. Do must people run stock res or alter it somehow to make more readable?
3. Soft buttons seem a little small. What's the best app to make usable soft keys.
4. Maybe some of these display issues are better with a theme of some sort? Might try one... what's ur fav? Don't really care about fancy...just something that makes navigating through android more forgiving.
5. Playing around with D's new volume app. Seems like that will become standard equipment. Any other "must have" apps/tweaks?
6. Phone/sms... how usable is this thing for making calls/sms? What apps/accounts work best?
7. Have about an inch and half row of pixels that seem weird. Most noticable while sliding up the notification bar...thought it was a scratch at first...kinda greenish looking and thin. Is that common? I could go back to stock and get replacement... bought a week ago. Barely noticeable...
Thanks.... just trying to get this thing set up sweet for my son. Might need to go get one for myself!

1. Can someone please detail how to boot into CWM. I press and hold power + n for 8 seconds, and then release n, then release power. Nothing. What should I be seeing? If you have it flashed to eMMC from Rom Manager, then you should boot while holding both buttons, after a couple seconds, then release power only and continue holding n till you see CWM appear.
2. Long time Launcher pro user on my Epic. Does it work well on nc? Seems like icons are small and I need to add more rows and columns. Do must people run stock res or alter it somehow to make more readable? I've used it everyday since I have had my NC. It is very quick and I have had no issues with it. Customize to your hearts content.
3. Soft buttons seem a little small. What's the best app to make usable soft keys. The CM7 tablet tweaks from mad murdoc included in the ROM are very very usable. You can change the dpi from stock 161 to anything above, instantly making everything larger.
4. Maybe some of these display issues are better with a theme of some sort? Might try one... what's ur fav? Don't really care about fancy...just something that makes navigating through android more forgiving. I like and am currently using Purple Punch by Upward Spiral. List of his themes here. These are also available to install straight from the Market.
5. Playing around with D's new volume app. Seems like that will become standard equipment. Any other "must have" apps/tweaks? I always choose to install Cachemate for Root Users and Adfree and adbWireless pretty much instantly on any new rooted android device. CPUspy is also a nice one in that it lets you see if your Nook is actually sleeping or not.
6. Phone/sms... how usable is this thing for making calls/sms? What apps/accounts work best? Calling is unheard of I believe. Texting would be easy with Google Voice or another "textfree" type application
7. Have about an inch and half row of pixels that seem weird. Most noticable while sliding up the notification bar...thought it was a scratch at first...kinda greenish looking and thin. Is that common? I could go back to stock and get replacement... bought a week ago. Barely noticeable... It was an issue of just a line of missing pixels in the Notification Tab. Nothing to be worried about. It is not there in newer nightlies.
Thanks.... just trying to get this thing set up sweet for my son. Might need to go get one for myself!

Answers in bold, hope it helps. Other forum members will probably add their say in.
Two things I will add:
1. I use Launcher Pro daily on my Nook Color. I think its almost a must with its ability to set so many icons in a row (in the paid-for version).
2. The issue with everything being small is due to our screens having a low natural DPI (160). A tablet like a Galaxy Tab is set on a much higher DPI (220+) for older eyes. Since your son is using it and not you, let him try it out with a low DPI before you mess with it. If you still want to increase it, use the LCD density program from the market.

Thanks..
1. I played with ADW for a bit, but went back to L Pro. I had to use my paid version to make some widgets fill all the rows and columns I made. It really is versatile...
2. Thanks, I'll def look for LCD density in market and give it a try.
Thanks for the answers above.
1. Yeah all is on eMMC.. I've scene the boot sequence described so many different ways. Will try yours!
3. Will try the DPI adjustment
4. Will check out Purple Punch theme. Looks Cool. Learned about Theme Switcher app that came with CM7, and tried the Honeycomb look.
5. What is Cachemate? Love cpu spy, and my nc is sleeping like a baby!
6. Can't seem to get very far with GV texting. In the setup It seems to be looking for a phone?
7. Updated the nightly and the row of pixels is still there. I can still see it besides the notification tab. Think I'm going to try going to stock and see if I notice it.
Thanks again!

The pixels is next to the notification tab? You should take a picture of that. Could be a hardware problem.

It's a horizontal line about 2/3 of the way up the display, starting about 1/3 of the way from left side. Very thin, and about 3 inches long. Slightly greenish tint and brighter toward the left. Most noticable on black background (like when sliding upt the notification bar). It's even noticable from CWM (when I'm able to boot into it!)
btw the key combination u mentioned above boots into uboot or something I know nothing about!

Definitely sounds like a hardware issue, as in it could be a line of hot/stuck pixels. I would restore to stock and see if it is still there, if it is, take it into a B&N store.
And yes, the uboot is/was a new edition to the nightlies not to long ago. It makes dual boot's and booting to recovery really easy. To boot into recovery make sure to select
Boot Device: eMMC
Boot Mode: Recovery
Boot now
There is just a simple key press to boot right into recovery, but I can't say I know it exactly.

Has anybody messed with the lcd density in their build.prop folder? I saw this thread, http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/164880-froyo-resolution-tweak.html, over at androidforums and was wondering if anybody else has tried this?
ill try it out right now sec
EDIT: yeah it does work, it increases the resolution size thereby making things smaller on your screen proportionally. our screens are rather tiny anyway though.
i tried it out at a ridiculous 130 which made things super small i may try out 140 for giggles. it does make things harder to use (and read) considering the size of screen objects is responsible for more than legibility like a desktop (a caveat of touch screens -- ease of use and interaction is based on ability to easily touch objects in the ui. make them too small and you lose a bit of your ease of use).
either way, its a neat little thing to mess with if you'd like to see what other res may look like on your eris' screen.
RE-edit: 140 is fine w/ launcher pro and icon drawing but it makes certain things super blurry or misaligned so you're not really getting the proper res up/down effect. google reader @ 140 renders horribly so the problem goes a bit beyond color banding like the original post over there says. going the other way to 165 also blurs stuff up. It's probably because our ui elements aren't necessarily vector or anything like that. mostly they are pngs which this density setting appears to resize on the fly causing some nasty image quality degradation. im sure someone else could chime in on this w/ a bit more knowledge. purely conjecture
Eh, dirty hack. I use more icons widget so I have tons of free space. It makes widgets weird too.
However I am really interested in that game he posted a screeny of.

Thanks for the great tip. Perfect for internet browsing.
by the way, if you use this in sense the buttons at the bottom become unaligned and text under widgets and icons move. From what I've seen it works perfect in launcherpro.

yes, it works great in launcher pro, expect if you use folders. When you try to open a folder it crashes. ADW doesn't have this issue with its folders.. but not a big deal otherwise.
To be clear, I am liking ICS a lot, and am happy to see where Android is progressing. Here are a few complaints, however:
-I can't believe they disabled the search capacity button from the home screen. If you remove the search bar, there's no way to search from the home screen. Still hate the fact that the top bar is unusable space.
-Limited items in folders. This is one area which I don't understand why they back-peddled. It's very iOS-like, and it's one of the worst things to copy. Max 16 apps in a folder now. My understanding was that it was unlimited before. This will require adjustment.
-The icons look childish. Wish Google would truly allow customization and let us change the icons like other launchers do.
-Still no ability to add custom shortcuts to the home screen (like ADW Launcher can). Unless I'm mistaken? How do I make a direct dial icon?
-Long pressing Home button for the app switcher feels slow and clunky. It takes a while for the list of apps to show up.
Well, that's all I can think of for now. Still getting the hang of it. Again, overall, I'm really enjoying ICS. The UI is so modern and sleek looking.
You can add direct dial shortcuts through the widget section dude

I'm loving ICS on the Nexus S, too. However, my battery life is atrocious since the upgrade today. I went from 100% to 4% in less than 6 hours. It wasn't that I was using it or playing with it that much, either. All the settings were similar to what they were on 2.3.6, e.g., low backlight, GPS/WiFi/Bluetooth off, push email on, account sync on. I was getting 12+ hours with up to 20% left on Gingerbread with these settings. According to the battery app, it looks like "Android OS" might be the culprit, as "keep awake" is listed as the highest-ranked battery usage over everything else, including screen, voice calls, cell standby, etc. I've read on other forums about a possible Android OS bug with the SGS II. I'm thinking it might be so with ICS on the NS. Anyone else have this issue? How do we report it to Google so we can get a bug fix?

icons are still customizable, as they are with any rom. The launcher my not let you do it as easily as other launcher aps from within android.. but you can still do it externally by editing the icon files from the flash able rom file.
One small issue I found: Lock sound never plays even when the option is checked. Besides that, I'm really liking ICS. I wish the default widgets were more customizable. (e.g., calendar widget is one row too long, GMail widget is one column too wide) As a person with a severe visual impairment, I find the "Larger" text option a nice touch.

Oh wow, thanks! By the way, I found my issue for the lock screen: it got switched to None. I guess I forgot to switch it back after looking for the Face Unlock feature.
Speaking if which, looking at other threads it seems this feature was dropped for the Nexus S due to poor front-facing camera resolution. Oh well.
PS: I wish the custom message you can put on the lockscreen was more customizable than one scrolling line.

One thing I noticed is it gets rather sluggish at times. UI is smooth but there are very bad lags. Noticeable with even just the a live wallpaper, you can see it stutters every ten seconds or so.
Also, some apps won't work, Viber for example. It installs but it doesn't work, it just won't start. Black screen.
Maybe I should wait until the official OTA comes available for me, in Italy, through Software Update, and see if things are better? I have an i9020T, though- isn't the update going to be the same exact file?
if your battery life is really bad try turning off NFC and see if that makes a difference. From the Alpha I managed to get about 25 hours (once..) but cannot remember what I changed to get that.
the two complains I have : auto brightness doesn't work as well as it used too.
and google talk signs me out after a while without telling me.
Face unlock didn't seem to make the cut on the Nexus S.
Posted this in the ICS link section... this seems like a better place for it.
Anyone seeing any issues with the completely stock ICS on the TMo version of the nexus S?
Issues I am seeing so far:
Delayed scrolling when I swipe in the web browser. Seems as if the browser is trying to determine if I meant to click a link or scroll and the delay for the OS to decide is MUCH longer than it was on GB. (Maybe that was intended but maybe they over compensated).
The browser exits (doesn't even force close), just exits on certain websites when trying to scroll.
I hear reports of it being "buttery smooth" and honestly mine feels like it is slower than GB.. maybe that is because of my perception that the scrolling is slower...
Curious to see if this is happening to anyone else...
Just upgraded to XXJVT courtesy of Samsung Kies on my I9000, and, ugh. Black Notification Bar, home screens that wrap around, 1 > 2 > 3 >1 and horrible menu scrolling (which I know is because of stupid Apple).
On the menu front, how does stock Google scroll menus?
But the Notification Bar, it is supposed to be black? I think it looks hideous.
Yep, the notification bar is solid black, which I also thought was pretty hideous. For the home screen scrolling, you can solve that with a launcher app. I highly recommend GO Launcher Ex or ADW Launcher Ex.
If you're not feeling the look and feel of the stock JVT ROM, you could always try out custom ROMs like CM7.1, MintBerry MIUI, etc.
Don't see how home screens that wrap around as opposed to stopping at the end can possibly be a bad thing. Makes it faster when to go from one end to the other.
How is the menu scolling? Is it that glow effect when you hit the end as opposed to the iPhone-style bounce?
Custom ROMs are the way

That's the way, the horrible glow effect. How does stock Android do scrolling?
When I was looking at Android Handsets last year, the thing that disappointed me about the stock versions of Android, was the poor poor camera functionality and lack of recording time. Has this been addressed in current Android stock?
So Actually I was going to write a thread about the two themes present in the samsung's TouchWizUI: White and Blue.
My Galaxy Tab 2 P3100 i.e. tab shows me only white theme while the phones shows the blue one.
But while messing with the LCD density I found that the firmware Actually has both of the themes.
so I started experiments on my tab with different LCD Densities and found that while we have both of the themes but we actually have all the three UIs with us too.
It's been the 4.1.1 update that made me loose my fav tabletUI and make it to the PhabletUI.
By changing Lcd density, we can see the changes in the UI.
Please see the attachments for Screenshots.
Range:
Below 140 is the TabletUI with the white theme.
Between 140 and 160 is the PhabletUI with white theme
Above 160 is the PhoneUI with the BLUE theme
though changing LCD density to other than 160 will make the touchwiz home and keyboard app to crash.
but using alternatives [launcher and keyboard app] can make it cool.
also densities greater then 160 [phoneui] will also cause the camera app to crash and the UI will change the camera Icon with a cute little green android.
Review:
TabletUI:
1) Samsung white theme is seen
2) There is no bar on the top
3) Notification bar opens from bottom
4) Battery percentage Is displayed
5) Even on rotation to the landscape, button bar [The one with the back, home and recent buttons on, sorry don't know the name for it] stayes at the bottom
6) In lockscreen only bottom bar is present
PhabletUI:
1) Samsung white theme is seen
2) Bar on either side of screen i.e. Notification bar on top and the action bar [let us give it a name] at bottom.
3) notification comes from top
4) notification bar doesn't fill the screen
5) no battery percentage indicator
6) On rotation each bar stays at there respective position.
7) lock screen differs from tabletUI as there is only top bar not the bottom one.
PhoneUI:
1) Samsungs's beautiful blue theme is seen.
2) UI almost same as PhabletUI with each bar on either side of the screen
3) Notification fills the home screen like what happen in a phone
4) When orientation changed to landscape, the Bottom action bar shifts to the right
5) Gestures in the bottom bar used to open google ow is not present.
6) Battery indicator is blue in color while it is green on the other two modes
7) When connected to PC via USB, Battery indicator neither shows a cross mark nor it shows charging.
8) Settings menu now don't have the dual panel
9) Camera icon replaced by android icon
100 Camera app is crashed
I also see a little performance boost when in phoneUI made.. may be because of no TouchWiz mode.
[Note:
Remember to install a launcher before changing the LCD density because it will make your TouchwizUI to crash and you will not able to select your apps from the app drawer.
Rather you can also put your build.prop editor in the homescreen shortcuts so than you can use it from there. but make it before the changes, you will not be able to make changes in homescreen shortcuts as it is a part of TouchWiz home and on opening, it will crash.
Your replies are appreciable.

Easiest way to change modes is to use a custom ROM. AOKP being the better choice. DPI changer built into the ROM If you wish to add a custom theme ( set it to 159, default being 160) and you can switch modes via ROM control and a quick reboot. I'm sure the OP knows what hes doing , just giving some advice to less experienced users.

I know that custom roms have better control on modes but the motive of this post to tell others that we already have the three modes with us along with the two themes ON STOCK ROM.
For those who don't want to shift to a custom rom or argue that we lost our UI after updates. This post is for them.

I agree with you totally , but the amount of threads in this forum where people have messed with stuff not knowing what they are doing are plenty. Hey I was one of them when I joined the forums :crying: I've had bootloops by the dozen and even totally bricked a device by flashing the wrong thing on to it , an expensive mistake to make.
I actually like the stock ROMs , just that i prefer total control over the ROM i use, a personal choice ....same as yours ! I was just offering advice to new users. Basically make sure you know what you are doing before you do it or use something that's designed for the job if you dont.
Finding out how to recovery from a bootloop and how to restore a device from a nandroid is a must.
I do find it strange why people stay on stock , not even with root access.Surely that's what the spirit of Android is about, what makes our tabs different from the locked down nature of the iPad. Obviously its the users choice as they paid for the device , just an observation.
Have fun with your DPI

Remember to install a launcher before changing the LCD density because it will make your TouchwizUI to crash and you will not able to select your apps from the app drawer.
Rather you can also put your build.prop editor in the homescreen shortcuts so than you can use it from there. but make it before the changes, you will not be able to make changes in homescreen shortcuts as it is a part of TouchWiz home and on opening, it will crash.
Your replies are appreciable.

Hi,
My second screen app icons periodically get really small (and kinda ugly) for no apparent reason. Then they get back to normal size also rather randomly. One way to get them back to normal is to turn off and on app icons.
I have no idea why this happens, and I don't even know how to take a screenshot of the second screen to show what it looks like.
Details: LG H990ds. Sept 2017 Android 7 running. Unrooted.

I am working on mods for second screen(currently have partial text color control) and would like to see what your talking about?
This post has instructions for added Second screen to screenshots.
Also, it seems like I may have seen a setting for on/off app icons, but can't recall where?
Install another theme.this is unofficial themes issue.

This is one of the 2-3 themes that come with the phone by default.

The pictures look the same to me only the second one is slightly closer?
What is this potato you speak of? Haha
This is 100% a theming property. I wouldn't really say "issue" or "error" as much as I would say mistake, and that's o lt in the eye of the beholder.
This is a value setting within the theme itself.
The themer has set the theme to draw app icons on top of a series of backgrounds and they set the icon to be drawn at a percentage of the default app icon.
What I'm saying is the theme will, in this case, reduce the app icon to a smaller size then place it on top of one of the themes bg's.
Some icons have bg's as part of the actual app icon and some have only the icon (see attatched samples). Obviously icons that do not have a bg will blend into themes easier because the themes bg option will look more intended.
There are several options to fix this, but only one being easy.
1. The easy one does not get to keep the theme, you must change the theme to something that is visually acceptable to you
2. This is an option for users that have some experiance swapping images in an apk. Find the app which has an icon you don't like and use 7zip to open the apk and swap the image for one that appeals to your taste. Problem here is that thing can get overridden every time the apps gets updates. This can also trigger package errors due to signatures values and changes from original size.
3. Knowledge or modding a decompiles apk using apktool is required for this one.
Located the themes common.apk and decompile it.
Within the decompiled folders you will find a values folder, open the integer.xml and change this value to the value that fits your needs best (100 being 100% or the full original size) <integer name="config_icon_ratio_as_theme">65</integer>.
There are other ways that can do what you are wanting done, you just have to get creative with it!
You ask "how to take screenshots or second screen? You've asked this question twice now, obviously without reading the reply to the question the first time.
I persoanlly answered the question by pointing you to the link where you have options on how to add the feature you want.
This is a development community and i suggest spending a little more time reading and you'd be surprised with gow much you can find by doing a quick search.
So in summary, change you theme or learn to edit decompiled app with apktool.
Read every reply ro questions you ask so you and the people who take the time out of their days to answer you don't have to repeat themselves.
Hit the thanks button to post that givd you info that helps.
Good luck, good day and hope that sums up your question here

actually there's a bigger difference in real life, maybe the blurred second photo doesn't convey it well

The problem is, this size keeps changing randomly. I haven't changed the theme in 2 months, but the size switches between the correct size and the tiny one every few days. The theme itself is the 'Default Black' theme that came with the phone.

I saw the comment, replied to the first part but happened to miss that part out. Thanks for that.
Attaching clearer pics to demonstrate the size difference.
Again it doesn't happen when the theme is applied. The theme has been applied from the beginning.. It's the dark one that came with the phone.. The problem comes and goes randomly.
Same here! Usually it happens when I've moved around an app icon, doesn't matter if it's moved onto the second screen or onto a homescreen.
A restart usually resets the size to normal.
u/stangdriver44 u/3mL : I have found the reason for this.
It's due to the modification of DPI I did on the main screen. It seems this setting is inherited by the second screen off and on. I just reduced my DPI further to 400 and the second screen icons got even smaller.
Others have also reported this issue. (As on this reddit thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/lgv20/comm...e_the_size_of_the_navigation_buttons/dnj6dko/)
Is there a way to de-link the DPI of the second screen with that of the first?
Im trying to reduce the size of those buttons, can youpeovide the dpi and resolution that you are at?

The one in the photo was at 420. I'm currently at 400, which makes for some really tiny icons.
EDIT: please note, that this resizing isn't constant, it gets turned on and off like a boolean such that sometimes it stays small, then returns to normal for a while.
