5 Ghz channels and flashing foreign (to US) ROM's - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) General

If you flash a UK based ROM on a US Note 8, for example you lose your upper 5 Ghz channels, 149, 153, 157 and 161, so you will need to set your router to use the lower channels for your Note 8 to pick up on the 5 Ghz band. The only way to get those channels back, at least for now, is to flash a US based ROM. I kinda wish this had been stated in the ROM threads, but I found out the hard way

That is incorrect. In the /etc/wifi folder, you will find a half dozen text files. I don't have all the names, but they are the only ones that will open readable in a text app, the others are hex files.
Open with a file explorer that has text edit function & look for the property "CCODE:", it will likely say "GB" as the setting. All you need to do is set the CCODE to "ALL" & reboot for the 5Ghz band to function.

Thanks for the info. Nvram_mfg have ccode set to all, but nvram_net was gb. Just set to all and it works.

I didn't know that. I looked in build.prop, data/data/ and other folders and files to find anything to modify, but I couldn't find anything related to 5 Ghz channels, thank you so much, you made my night!

Edit-Hmm, I changed that to all, and rebooted, and then set my Router to a high channel, but it won't see my 5 Ghz using high channels, any other ideas? I made sure it was set to all in the other text files as well, but it was. So, lower 5 Ghz channels work fine, but I still can't see or use 149, 153, 157 or 161.

thx thx

You tried the wifi analyzer app to see if it lets you connect?

Yeah, I tried that but it still wouldn't see the upper 5 Ghz channels, I have a feeling some other settings need to be adjusted in the ROM's settings.

I fixed it, I went back to 4.1.2, it works fine I went back for more than that though, battery life on the UK 4.2 ROM was pretty bad for me. I only have one router, a Netgear R6300, it does simultaneous 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz.

yeah, it works fine in 4.1.2, but 4.2.2 i just can't get it to work. i didn't have any problems with 4.1.2, but 4.2.2 was just so shiny and new that i have to have it! honestly i could keep on using civ's old rom and never have a complaint.

you should probably happy to hear that official US 4.2.2 firmware just released :victory:

Isn't that for a cellular version of the tablet?
I've also never had any lucky downloading from the Sammobiles website. Its that stupid annoying captcha thing that so many websites use anymore, and I can't stand it. It never works on that sammobile website for me, even though I know I entered it correctly each time.

Well, it said Cellular South (which changed it's name to C-Spire a while ago) in the County/Carrier, but the FW is labeled N5110, the cellular version of the Note 8 is the N5100. I know what ya mean on the Captcha's, half the time I have to refresh it several times before I can recognize it, though some sites do have an audio version too.
Edit-C-Spire doesn't even carry the Note 8, so somebody obviously put the wrong info in the Country/Carrier part.

I finally got it dowloaded and installed. The higher 5ghz bands display now. The pen seems fine to me in this version.

Optus Usage Widget

The actual app from Optus works a treat, but the widget just says "There was an error displaying your usage". Anyone else having trouble with it?
Same problem here. Nfi how to fix.
No luck here either.
If it actually worked, took up less space on the screen (maybe 4 icon spots or less instead of 8!!!), and usage was updated more regularly (delayed up to 24hrs tsch...) then it would be perfect.
But alas, it fails. Still, I keep the app on my homescreen.
Not sure what issues you guys are having, im running Version 1.0(1) and it works fine!
do you know by any chance the link to download this app?

No worries.
Sorry I wasn't quite clear in my wording...
I meant I dumped the optus app before I upgraded firmware.
I flashed to JFB, then JFF, then JG1. I can't notice many improvements... In fact my phone is a bit more laggy at JG1 (but I have more apps installed so I presume it's that).
I would flash to JG3 but... I don't wanna have to restore all my settings and data again... (done it about 5 times).
I wouldn't mind having a copy of original AUS firmware for safety reasons... or at least the CSC (contains all the carrier specific info).
It's doing the same thing for me. Curses.
ahh common problem I see. wonder how this stuff is logged...

Hey guys, quick 2 Optus-related questions. Switched from 3 to them when I bought my Galaxy S yesterday.
1) How can you find out your account number? I've registered a username and password for using the My Account app, but it wants an Account Number that it states will be on my bill, the first of which I obviously won't be receiving for a while...
2) Is there a backup of the stock Optus firmware (JF3) including all the pre-loaded apps just in case any of us ever need to return the phone under warranty to load it back to its factory settings and firmware?
Cheers!
1) It's annoying you don't get it when you first sign up, but it's written on your first bill (pro-rata which is only a few days).
Apparently you can also call up optus and get it off customer service, however I didn't know this so I just waited.
2) No there isn't a proper flashable dump, unfortunately. If you do decide to flash your firmware (it's worth it if you can't wait for official updates.. which are very slow).

Non working WiFi or Mobile Web on Cyanogen ROMS

I'm stumped. And agitated.
I'm stumpitated.
Every Cyanogen-based ROM i flash, I cannot get Wifi or mobile web to connect.
This is true of all current Froyo builds (all Cyanogen) and roms like Droid Does.
Weird thing is, I can get connected to wifi and ping local computer IPs. But I cant ping any websites or load them in the browser or apps.
I am flashed to MetroPCS. Haven't had any problem in ROMS like PlainJain, xtrROM, Evil Eris, etc.
Anyone have any troubleshooting steps or insight? Thanks in advance - I love this community!

I said Wifi doesnt work for me, not for you. Thats the issue altogether - it seems isolated for some reason.
I tried KaosFroyo, CELB and the CM direct, as well as DroidDoes (TCP's new cyanogen based). Can't get Wifi or Mobile to work on any other them. ROM doesnt matter, it seems to be anything cyanogen based for me.
Grdlock, Ivan, xtrRom, xtrSense, EvilEris, etc have all worked for me completely though - non cyanogen based.

Try my flash for metro here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730289
As always make a nandroid backup first.
Make sure you have booted your rom at least once successfully before applying my flash (it modifies the telephony.db that will not be present until after the first boot)
The problem you are running into is that in the build.prop the carrier info is still pointing to verizon, once i changed mine to cricket it worked, i assume changing it to metro would work for you as well.
I believe metro's proper MNC should be 310024 if you want to edit it manually, if i recall off the top of my head, anyways my flash should set that for you and get you squared away.
EDIT**
Actually sorry i mis read this, my flash will not assist with WIFI but it should get your mobile network to route through metro's proxy and get MMS working.
This sounds like a ROM issue if wifi is not working, or something hardware related.

Already running your flash, boss
Doesnt make a difference on these roms for me.
Works nice on xtrROM, though
Hmm, so to clairify if you use CELB 2.8, boot it, then flash my flash, then boot CELB then reboot CELB that you still do not get mobile web/mms?
Weird, almost sounds like your not getting DNS or something.
if you do an NSlookup on like www.google.com, then on the phone try to ping the number you got from nslookup, do the numbers match or what comes back?
I think that this flash won't work for some Froyo ROMs for whatever reason.
Either Autostart doesn't start up (did it ever ask you for SuperUser permissions, ever?)
Or
u2nl needs to be in a different place (worth investigation)
Or
Your proxy is set correctly, so wifi is trying to go through the proxy (which may not work), but something else isn't working correctly, so wifi is looking through the proxy, but something ELSE is wrong with mobile network.
Do a nand backup
then restore yourself to a 2.1 ROM and make sure it still works.
Is the first condition I listed at the top of this post, the case? Or did it ask you? 2.2 might have a superuser issue with Autostart. That'd make sense, since the Proxy might be working (which would be why your internet won't work when wifi is on), but your Mobile Network won't (which, of course it wouldn't, of Autostart wasn't starting up).

K, CELB 2.8 was the first Cyanogen rom to work, thats cool - but it didn't work with your flash. I had to do the manual input from the guide. I already had autostart.sh and u2nl in my root - does your flash overwrite them? still, even if it didnt, it should have set the right permissions, right? I wasnt until I input all the shell commands that I got mobile and app web.

It can't possibly work, as someone said that once read something on the Internet where someone else said it probability wasn't possible.....
I've updated my Vodafone branded HTC Legend, the only place I'd use flash is BBC iPLayer which I cannot get working, it displays the loading circle but then says "Adobe Flash; The content is not supported".
The speed is great, the animation of it opening the application of the application opening towards you, seems nice.
Live wallpapers is there, some nice stuff like the HTC flash light and apps2sd.
Other than that it just seems the same as before, the task launcher at the bottom hasnt changed, to a novice user it will just feel the same as before.
An annoying thing in my Internet browser after clicking a button to next page it keeps saying "Complete action using" even after I tick "Use by default for this action." it always pop back up.
Overall its similar to before, but the overall experience seems much better and smoother in my opinion. The web browser in particular is fantastic, much better than the one on Azure. Also the graphics seem very smooth in games.
It seems similar to the HTC Desire ROM now that we have the visual effects and liv wallpapers, though we obviously don't get HD video recording, and it seems we don't get Flash 10. Having said that, the HTC Flash Player SEEMS improved so at first I thought we had got Flash 10!

The hardware supports it fine. Our current drivers allow for an ad-hoc network. what would be better is AP mode (default Android tether), but the drivers and firmwares (for the wifi) didn't support it.

Simply upgrade to GEN 2 and go for one of the best roms. Try each of these 3 for a week and then you will know which is the best for you. They are all great but each have different advantages.
The best roms are currently:-
Ginger stir fry
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204407
Elitemovils rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1241421
CM7
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=nightly&device=blade
These are in no order of preference at all by the way!

Also CM7 is shaping up nicely but still not 100%

and yes these are all GEN2 but really you should upgrade!
See the forum for details on how...its easy!

And Orange have not updated to GEN2, AFAIK......
Also, for speed, less lag, you can overclock with No Frills ...you have it with SS. Also, set VM Heap to 32M, (think that may be done already in this ROM).
And I suggest also Launcher Pro from Market, if you get WiFi fixed!!!
For the WiFi, did you wipe/wipe/wipe before flashing with Swedish Spring?
Did WiFi work on original Stock ROM?.......is your PSK and Encryption is set up OK?
Use "show password" when connecting to your Network, from settings/Wireless & Networks/Tap Wi-Fi settings/Tap your network(ssid)/make sure your WEP or WPA password is correct.
Does it work OK with other devices?
Do you have MAC address filtering in Router, if so check Phone MAC, or disable in router.
Is DHCP set up in router. Is phone set to Static IP?
More info in this networking tutorial

thanks but i updated to gingerstirfry which was much easier than i thought and wifi is working fine!
however not all of my music on storage is showing on the music player? i used a music app from the market but still the same problem
Ok good to hear you made the right move rom wise
Without knowing what audio app you are using it is hard to advise but almost all of the ones I have used need to be told where you have your mp3 files.
I make a folder and call it mp3 or music and then point the program to it and all is good. The standard player in gsf called "music" will pick up your files automatically I think.
Another suggestion:- Try Go launcher ex and also the dialer and sms apps from Go.
They are free and are as good as or even better than anything you pay for.
Go also offer a huge range of widgets and themes for everything also. I use go on my phone and also my tablet.

SM-T580 average 4-4.5mbps download: is this normal?

Not rooted, no custom firmware, cable line at 120mbps. On speedtest, I never go more that 4.5 wich is lower than my upload speed??? Also, never saw my 5ghz band. Looking at specs on few sites, it is suppose to take it, right?
I can use 5ghz on my router, can you use 5ghz with any other device?

Different countries use different 5ghz channels. Make sure the ROM you flash is the one for your local.
like I wrote. I don't have any custom rom beside the stock rom and update by samsung since I have it. I am in canada and it has been bought new here in canada. not online. this is canadian version.

Hi. You can fix this but need root. Need fix one line in the file qcom_cfg.ini . Open this file (it is on system/etc/firmware/wlan) in text editor(RootExplorer for example) . In the midle text find this line
gChannelBondingMode5GHz=1
and change it to
gChannelBondingMode24GHz=1
Save. Reboot.
Try this. Need help
P.S. I not checked on my Tab. Checked on another qualcomm device.
If not help you can restore file back.

thank you. i did not want to root but if i need to.... look good, but will this mean that I will be only on 5mhz after and the 2.4 won't be available anymore? also, event at 2.4 like I am, should it be faster than the speed I have ?

Fix, to support the width of the Wi-fi channel 40Mhz (only for 2.4Ghz frequency). You increase speed only.
