Does the thermal throttling really affects daily usage? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, how are you?
I'm currently planning on getting this device and after reading some reviews and threads in this forum I'm aware of the thermal throttling that the Nexus 4 shows when under high usage or benchmarks.
I live in Brazil and I'd like to know better if this issue really affects daily usage, like long gaming periods, or we only notice that when benchmarking the device.
Do you consider buying this smartphone a good deal? The price around here is actually very good.
Thanks in advance.

I really don't think it's a big deal. If thermal throttling is a big deal to you, you can switch to a custom kernel that allows you to change it.
And yes, this phone is a great deal and still a highly recommended purchase.

Long gaming you will notice it when it throttles for sure.
Whether you want to deal with it or mod it is another story. But on stock with long intensive gaming you will notice and it will annoy you.

It will not matter for apps, but games will suffer from drop in frame rates, but they'll still be playable. I get 25-30fps for Asphalt 8 with this device (stock), but it's a very demanding game. I really haven't had a bad experience.
If you know how to install custom kernel you can raise the throttling temperature or overclock the GPU.
You might want to wait and get the Nexus 5 if you want better gaming performance.

[Q] Do you recommend this phone?

Hello All,
I'm currently running a HTC Magic, and even with a custom ROM and everything It's beginning to drive me crazy with it's sluggishness, and the battery life is dying too. I'm looking to get this phone as a replacement, but it's higher than I would normally pay, so am going to sell a tonne of stuff if I go for it, so want some opinions for certain if it is worth the purchase. I haven't found a huge amount of reviews for this online, so as people that actively use it etc. would you recommend it? Also, I know it runs a 800Mhz processor, how far has it/can be it overclocked (just out of interest, not sure if it even needs it? You would know more on that).
I use my phone a lot for pretty much everything (Social networks, emails, general phone functions, games, everything really) so I'm looking for an all rounder really.
Thanks in advance everyone!
I recommend Ideos X5. Fantastic phone.
some have try the 1,8Ghz kernel overclocked but up to 1,5Ghz (another custom kernel which is very good) is running smooth (with some high temperature ) ...
at 1,2 is very nice but i prefer 1Ghz which is the best for my use and without any noticeable temperature rise...
x5 is known as a smartphone with very high price-performance ratio here in hong kong..
and in terms of price its already in the lower range of android phones available in the market.. definitely a good phone to have..
Huawei IDEOS X5 is such an all rounder~I have used it for a month, everything is fine!
Hi all,
Thanks for all your advice, I'm going to sell some stuff on eBay, and then I'll buy this phone asap! Look forward to seeing you all on the forum soon.
Yes, I do

I haven't gotten high temperature?
Highest I got from 1.7GHz with 30min stress test was 40 degree which feels pretty normal.

I know nothing really on the subject, but surely overclocking to 1.7Ghz (more than double stock) can't be healthy for the CPU?
Yes, so far it's been a great phone and it's quite cheap too!

Yes the Ideos x5 is a great phone, it is fast, but i only get a day out off the battary
I have had my X5 for maybe 3 months or so and absolutely love it, was running @ 1ghz on std B133 build and I noticed a huge improvement over standard, my carrier has just rolled out B136 OTA update so am now running the 1.8ghz max image and at 1.2ghz it feels great
I love this phone so much I am fully convinced of the virtues of android so now want to upgrade to SGSII because it must just be incredible by comparison
Battery drains out fast and wifi droops out, other than that its great phone

Other versions of the 2nd-Gen Snapdragon are being released at 1.4GHz so it's not surprising these can run at similar speeds. The 800Mhz 7230 is deliberately set slower to create a version with better battery life.

thanks

The phone is amazing. If you have never used an android phone, buy it today.

GPU performance

Hi, I came from the HTC One to the SGS4 mostly because of the faster GPU/CPU. One thing I don't understand is that my HTC One got 46 fps in glbenchmark 2.5 off screen and my SGS4 got 41. Both of them running at 450mhz. Why is it that the HTC One has much better graphics benchmarks than the s4 despite the worse RAM and Chip?

do you notice an actual performance difference? apps like that are good for scaling, but you cant judge performance or level of quality on their results. there is no for sure reason why the one scored better, its probably has more to do with the app vs the phone.

its sense UI vs touchwiz and some games run better on certain hardware. the htc one is not 100% the same.
many games need updating for this phone.
I might install a google edition ROM and see how that goes since it doesnt have any touchwiz bloatware. hopefully that helps a little. Other than that, the battery seems to never drain! much better battery life than the HTC One

But, my son is heavy into it and he has no issues. Not sure what all he plays. Think he just got FF III. Could check if needed
But, wondering if there is a setting somewhere on the S4 that helps in game performance

Normally by using "Force GPU Rendering" under developer options increases gaming performance. It doesnt do much though

i9500 or i9505 or wait for i9506

I dont care about the 4g. My only concern in performance, overheating and application/customization support.
Which processor i should go for. Also I have heard Snapdragon 800 has a huge difference in terms of performance should i wait for that
I am not a heavy gamer(actually i mostly play 2D games) but smoothness in daily tasks and multitasking is really important for me in a smartphone.
Thanks for your answers.
Wait 10 years for the i980000, I hear that's the one to get
But seriously... just buy the phone you want now. If you always wait for the better phone you will be waiting forever, this technology moves fast, and the i9500 and i9505 are both very good phones.
If you want the most custom ROM support go for the i9505.

but guys Snapdragon 600 and 800 difference is sooo huge. I am tempted to get my hands on the 800 instead of 600 and think will regret if I buy i9505 instead of waiting for couple of months for the 9506.
BTW how is the battery life and the heating issues going on? are they fully resolved.

By the time you've waited for the i9506, the i9507 might be out soon, and by the time that comes out the next flagships will only be a few months away. Its exactly the same with PC hardware, if you wait for a new release you pay more and by that time the new releases won't be far off.
If you want a phone now, the i9505 is an excellent phone, if you can wait then go for it.

Well if you wait for i9506 it means less battery life by increasing performance... And all the apps and the os itself just don't stop there when it comes to performance.
In the end a smartphone should just be capable of doing daily usages without any performance issues but it'd be seem unlikely a.t.m.
The lighter the better and bigger the screen the better while keeping dimensions to acceptable level.
I certainly think the technology is there and it'll add to the cost to produce in current terms.
Or they'd rather bring out something extra ordinary and affordable by everyone's budget.
That's something for thought.
One of the coolest feature of S4 would be the use of S Band

"Android Beat reports that the Snapdragon 800 includes improvements to
battery life. Under the same strain, devices equipped with the new processor
will last 25% longer than Snapdragon 600 devices before needing to be
charged. ... Aside from improvements to battery life, Geek expects that devices will run much cooler under strain, reporting that playing games for thirty minutes had no impact on temperature. They also point out that their Snapdragon 800 test device loads large apps lightning fast. In addition, the Snapdragon 800 raises mobile computing performance enough to allow a new level of gaming on mobile devices."

You play mobile games? You may want another phone.

Man I love this phone after only a few hours.
Till I loaded up my Castle Clash and COC and I'm sadly disappointed .
Its slower than my old device and I don't understand why. The games even stutter a bit when a lot of action is going on.
What's the deal?
I've changed the title because if you're a mobile gamer like myself you may want to get another phone.
I'm pretty sure the Forced encryption has something to do with it. Hoping an update comes soon because this phone is blazing fast.
Please don't tell me CoC lags! I'm going from the G3 and it played worst than my S4! Please don't tell me that! Plays great on the OnePlus One.... Must be the 2K screen killing the frame rates.
Anyone tried playing CoC with encryption off?
I can confirm game lag isn't encryption. I tested block fortress: war before and after decrypting. There was no change. And its not the GPU or screen because antutu benchmark benches higher in GPU than my note 3 did. My guess is lollipop/art issues. But who knows for sure :/
It's lollipop issues. A lot of developers didn't take advantage of the early preview builds. The Adreno 420 shouldn't have any problem pushing COC on a 2K screen

Exactly. This thing outperforms the snapdragon 800 pushing 1080p. Basically meaning, all games should actually run noticeably faster than they did on the snapdragon 801 and 800. The 420 is a beast of a GPU.
I already have encryption off.
So basically right now ill have to carry both my phones just to play my games. It's that annoying and I even have ART enabled on my old phone which runs cm11.
I only got 14 days before I can't return this thing.
I'm bummed out.

(Just got this so bear with me) I have encryption on currently and noticed that games that havent been updated yet are a tad slower to load. The games that have updated load instantly. I would just give it a few weeks for the apps to update.
I play CoC and it is smooth as butter on mine. I'm only unlocked and rooted and still have encryption
I play Clash and it's smooth as eggs. It's smoother than my OnePlus One.
There's a thread discussing internal memory and so far it looks like they could be from 3 different manufacturers so performances could be affected by which one you phone is using. To check go to fast boot and it shows in the hardware information on the bottom half of the screen
This worked wonders for me

I suppose I'll try this kernel and see what happens.

yeah me too .. so disappointed .. its maybe because the game is not yet optimized and the force encryption has a lot of write speed .
I lag on some waves of Kingdom Rush
Its definitely the lack of optimization yet because the benchmarks show this phone to have better performance than rivals such as the iPhone 6 even with its 2k screen being used in the benchmark. The adreno 420 GPU is a monster of a phone GPU. Seriously impressed with how much power they packed into this thing.

Oneplus actually has a crippling gpu issue. I haven't encountered it myself on my games but if you read the forums there's a lot of people saying they get stutters.
If you want to test it, try dling StabilityTest from the play store and running the cpu + gpu stress test and you will see very good performance and consistent frame stutters like clockwork.

Optimal SD 810 Performance

What are your guys' methods to extract the best possible performance from the SD 810 in our Nexus 6p? I think everyone is aware that this chipset is prone to throttling extremely quickly for a mobile chip. I've experimented with massive underclocking both the big and little cores, changing governors, different kernels and other things. Unfortunately, I don't think it is possible to undervolt the 810. It's amazing that such a massive company like Qualcomm gave the go ahead to release a chip with such fundamental problems even if they were under pressure to release a 64 bit chip. Makes me think that they may value profits over their consumers experience.
So again I ask, what is your method of obtaining the best, no lag/stutter, performance out of our beloved Nexus 6p and it's infamous Snapdragon 810?
I did the hard thermal mod here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guide-improve-cooling-greatly-reduce-t3323898
And use the thermal soft mod here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/development/cttmod-mm-t3386953
Even then, it will throttle during heavy gaming but nothing like before. It's rare I play long enough that it starts shutting down cores. Usually a half hour at a time. For my purposes it has all but eliminated thermal induced lag. Definitely shouldn't have to go through all that though lol.
To be honest things run great for me. It was the best they had to offer this past year. I'm not complaining. Best phone I've ever owned that's for sure

Im interested in getting the 810 to perform better. I had a snap dragon 610 phone that performed well and had battery life that would last all day. Is there a way to underclock the 810 down to how the 610 soc would run.

I installed this mod several days ago and have noticed significant improvements regarding thermal throttling. The 810 still throttles but it helps delay it by a noticeable amount of time. Definitely recommend to anyone looking to improve performance.
Also, the dev is actively working to improve the mod so it can only get better from here on out.
