SD card unmounted remotely. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

A co-worker of mine has an att galaxy s4, and he said last night he got a notification telling him his SD card was unmounted remotely.
I can't find any info regarding this particular message. He isn't rooted or running any special roms. He's tried removing and reinserting the card, and powering off everything, including removing the battery. The mount SD card option is not availability in the storage menu.
I don't know of any particular apps he has installed, but he's mentioned only a few that he's been using since he got the phone.
If there is any additional info that anyone could use to help me out figuring what's going on I'll be happy to get it. I have a micro to SD card adapter that I'll be getting to see if anything is on the card at all still.
Thanks for anyone who can provide any info on this issue.

I think his sdcard burnt out. Samsung devices are known for doing that lately. Ive never heard of a software or app remotely unmounting unless theyre is a new malware but I wouldn't see why they would unmount it.
Try the sd in your phone or via adapter. Chances are its dead.

SD Card not reading

hi guys, out of nowhere my sd card reader just stopped working, and it wont recognize any sd cards that i put it, it simply doesnt see it in the slot. i tried a factory reset and all that and nothing. is there any suggestions?
An SD card reader is usually a USB device that you put in a laptop or a desktop computer to work with the files on an SD card. If that is what is not working, chances are it is toast. Most of them are poorly made, but, the bright side is that they are very cheap to replace.
Theres also one behind/under the battery...
I have seen many posts about this. I have heard of at least one that worked after a few bat pulls and letting it sit there for a while but i also know a lot of people had to get a new phone under warranty

SD Card gone

Woke up this morning and my stock unmodified DHD told me Backup Everything has failed (normally scheduled @ 4am every day). Logs revealed it could not write to the SD card mount point. In addition to this notification bar was displaying "SD card removed unexpectedly".
Initially I thought this would be related to the recent OTA update and SD card issues being reported by various forum members with relation to it.
However upon further reboots and detailed examinations the phone could not find the card at all. This prevented me from being able to format the card even after a reboot. Same results with multiple card readers on different PCs and even in other phone handsets... Nothing detects the card anymore.
Looks like the HTC bundled 8GB microSD card (class 2) is broken for good... Lost all my NYE photos and videos... Restored from an older MyPhoneExplorer full SD card copy onto a spare SD card and seems to be working ok now.
What I'd like to know is whether anyone else has experienced similar hardware failure on their bundled SD card.
I didn't expect such a card to fail within 3 weeks of purchase. And shipping the phone back for SD card replacement would not be worth the postage fees for me. Overall I'm finding Android platform very unreliable.

I had frequent dismount on my class2 microSD 8 gb card by HTC (made by Samsung). It got so irritating that I need to reboot my phone to gain access back.
I changed over to a Sandisk 8gb class 4 microsd card, and the problem is solved.
Think the microsd card is crap, and has nothing to do with the android OS.
I (and many other users, it seems) have the same problem with the SD card being fried. The fact we are all getting the problem now indicates that it defintitely the result of a recent update, and not because the "card is crap"....
well as stated in another thread I had this problem from the very first day I got my DHD, after changing to anothe uSDHC the problem is gone
See existing thread...

It appears that replacing the SD card with a new one is the way forward, try to get one off HTC if possible. I havent heard of any replacement cards being fried yet.
Wow, a Samsung SD Card that dies, unheard of... (former Galaxy S i9000M owner....)

I'm so far doing alright with a spare SanDisk microSD. Which card did HTC issue as replacement?

SD Card problems...

Hi all,
For some reason my Atrix has stopped recognising my external SD card - I've tried multiple cards, formatted them etc etc and still nothing. Has anyone else had this problem?
Cheers
No, are you sure its in all the way? Make sure its mounted too and if its plugged in set the USB mode to "none" and wait a minute - just covering the basics

When you formatted make sure you re-mounted

Thanks for the responses.
The card is all the way in, but it appears the phone doesn't recognise it at all. In the SD card settings it doesn't show anything is inserted, so I can't mount it. In the file explorer, when I choose SD Card it says 'Insert SD Card'.
It was previously working :/
Did you ever try and force it in or rip it out? In which case the sensors could have been damaged on the phone, try the sd's on a different phone, if it works then its deffinitely the atrix
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
It could also be that the sd's. Are formatted incorrectly so that the system doesn't recognise them

I had this problem with my Atrix, but it was a physical problem, not software.
You might need to bend two pins to make contact so that the Atrix can read the card.
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Motorola-Atrix-4G-Teardown/4964/1
At the very bottom is a picture of the phone with the back off. If you look at the SD card slot using the Huge View, you will see two small plates on the lower left of the picture (at the end of the SD card slot) that are slightly parted. When you put your card in, those two plates must touch for the SD card to be recognized.
Push them very slightly to make them closer and try again.
There's a lot of mounting, inserting, hardware and software going on in this thread.
Although I don't recommend forcing it in. It may not be accustomed to such force.
Ok all gutter thinking aside, is it just your SD cards? Maybe brand issues? If not, have you tried INSERTING someone else's....card to see if it makes a SOLID connection to the PORT? (Last one I promise).
Try it in a different phone, if it doesn't work its the sdcard if it does then its your atrix and you should either fix it or claim warranty

Thanks again for the responses.
I have tried several cards in there now, to no avail. The phone did previously recognise the SD cards but it hasn't worked in about a week now. Unfortunately, I'm in the UK and I bought my Atrix from the US - I'm guessing Motorola will probably kick up a fuss regarding the warranty...
Cheers

Did you at least take a look at the pins to see if they're in contact when the SD card is inserted?
I had the exact same problem! It did appear to be the pins not making contact, however in my phone i didn't need to bend anything i just needed to slide the card a little unconventionally.
Basically if you are holding your phone with the battery facing you and the side with the sd card at the bottom left of the phone, place your finger on the card once it has already been inserted and slide it down as much as possible. In my phone it turned out there was a tiny little wiggle room in that direction, and when i pushed it it recognized right away and stayed that way. Maybe yours is the same!
Good luck!
It does appear to be the pins - Thanks guys!

Inesplicable deletion of files

Looks like the phone, inexplicably deleted all the directories and files that were stored in my 32 GB Class 10 Lexar micro SD card. It happened once, a few days ago, and today I was at the point of listening to some mp3s when I realised that it happened again today, although now only the "music" directory was deleted.
Does anybody have an explanation?
Which rom, anything suspicious installed, anything new installed, rooted, connected it to a different computer, anything else which might help others to help you?
Also, wrong forum.
could be faulty card. also make sure you do not just eject the card from phone and/or computer without first properly unmounting it.
if it is a new card, or you do not care about data on it, reformat with this tool
https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/
Well, I'm on stock ROM KI4 (Android vers. 2.3.4), my phone is unrooted and I never touched the card since I first put it in the phone, 2 months ago. However the first time I had the unpleasant surprise to find all the directories deleted I was on a previous ROM (android 2.3.3), so it seems that the issue is not ROM dependant. I do have quite a few apps that I downloaded from forums and therefore may be suspected to play tricks. It may be these, or it may indeed be compatibility issues with the micro SD, but what seeems strange to me, is that I don't get errrors in reading or writing files on that memory, but simply all of a sudden, at the point of opening a file, I realize the file no longer there together with its entire directory...
Ok, I was just wondering if I was the only one experiencing this issue, and as it looks so, then I'll keep monitoring the situation to see if it happens again, in such case I'll try to investigate more deeply the possible causes.
Thank you both for the useful sugggestions, and kreoXDA for the link to that utility... It may become handy!
And sorry if I am in the wrong forum (am I?). I thought that this was the right one.

If you haven't already, I would strongly recommend checking your SD card using h2testw.
No actually, I haven't... thank you, I'll do it!

There's a similar program, SDCardTester, in the Android market, so you can test on the SGS2 itself.
Ok, that would a more significative test. And it will let me test the card even now that I am away from home and I have no access to a PC. Thank you.
If you bought a 32gb sdcard off ebay at a knockdown price then I suspect you have been conned.
Try the sdcard test as suggested, it is probably a 1gb card with false code.
If it is from ebay, Dont return item either as recorded delivery will be too expensive, greater than cost of card, phone ebay and they should refund you.

No I'm quite sure that the card is not a fake. I have been using it for 2 or 3 months, filling it almost fully with no problems of capacity, speed, data corruption or whatsoever. Yes I bought the card from ebay, but from a well respected seller at "normal" price and it definitely came sealed by the manufacturer in its original blister.
I've just tried testing with SD Card Tester and everything looks OK. I get about 10 MBps r/w that if I'm not wrong is compatible with the class of the card.
I'm suspecting more android or some malware, rather than the card or some incompatibilty issues, to have erased all its contents except one directory with 5 pictures in it.
Well, as I said, for the moment I think the best thing I can do is simply to keep monitoring the situation.
Thank you mates anyway.
You need to do the capacity test...

I have been having a similar issue with a genuine 16gb class 10 from kingston. Files dissappearing or beconing corrupt. Assuming its a faulty card but not had chance to check.

Me too... it's not easy to perform an exhaustive test...
And here we go again... yesterday I noticed that all the apps that were installed on the sd card had gone... this thing begins to hurt my nerves...
Are you sure the files are deleted or did the as card just unmount?
Happened to me and I just restarted phone, all good.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
In fact, that's the first thing I suspected, but unfortunately unmounting / mounting the SD card, even phisically removing / reinstalling it from the slot, and shutting off / turning back on the phone didn't solve the problem...
Well just to give some more info. Its def not a mount/unmount issue as the card contents become corrupt randomly. Im just wondering if its a spec issue as in is class 10 causing a problem. My card is being swapped out by kingston so i will update when I can.

Yet you still haven't followed the advice in the thread, which was to run h2testw or SDCardTester to check the true capacity of the drive, and ensure data written to is is not corrupted.
I too face this similar problem. Use a Nokia 8gb card, don't know if Nokia manufactures it or not. Anyway, my files get deleted too. Apps also get corrupted. Is this a sd card slot problem. Maybe it's faulty?

Samsung GT doesn't wake up from sleep mode. Needs restart.

Is it just me out had anyone noticed that the Samsung p6800 goes into sleep mode, but doesn't wake on pressing the power button. I had to restart it again. Any solution to this problem is greatly awaited with sincere thanks.

Do you by any chance use an external micro sd card, I was having the problem at least once a day until I formatted my sd card in the tablet (you must format it using the format option in settings).
I copied all my music & books back to the card using my laptop still.
Been a week now not one problem since.

.... so....With or without the 6800??
Thanks alot for your kind reply...
Yes I do use a 32 GB external sd card. Will format the card and let you know. Hope it works.

I copied it all back without the tablet, I just used my microSD to SD adapter in my laptop. Still no problems as well (got the idea from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529262)
I guess it just did not like the original format, I have seen many stranger things in 30 odd years of using and fixing computers.
Update: 28/3: It's back (twice in the last 2 days) and I am back to the drawing board, going to try a different MicroSD (my old lexar 16GB maybe)
I backed up all my datas from my extremal as card and formatted the card in the device itself...ie from the galaxy tab settings. If the tab is not connected to the computer, then there is no problem. I needed to restart it once while it was connected to my laptop, when it failed to wake up. Other than that I haven't seem any issues. Beats me why connecting to the laptop causes this problem.

Yes.. thank you.. I copied all my sh*t too to a folder on the laptop..
Then put the card back into the 6800 and formatted it twice....
Then the card back to the laptop and copied all back...
re-insterted the card in the 6800..
had to re-set all ringtones..
AND, now we'll see if some of the oddities that im experiencing will sort themselves out..
Thanks for this tip...
Still having the problem even after formatting the external SD card. It goes to sleep and doesn't wake up. Not everytime though. What could be causing this problem? Where are the experts? Need some help.

As suggested by another forum member, I tried the app "Auto Airplane Mode" (by DON) which has completely sorted my sleep of death issues. I tried reformatting my 32GB SD but it made no difference. The app worked like a charm.
So I guess the problem is with my Transscend 32 GB class 4 SD card. I removed it and the sleep of death issue was no more. Formatted my card again in the device now. Let's see if the problem still persists...
