I'm doing this comparaison because I'm about to swap my Xperia Play with Alcatel One Touch Idol Ultra.
Any reasons to stick with Xperia Play ?
........It's not Alcatel
Sent from my R800i using xda app-developers app
If ya dont need physical buttons and need more powah - indeed better to swap.
I will keep my play, even with lack of power for games, cuz touchscreen is awful controller for games, and i like that many functions(mediaplayer, game console, phone) united in one small enough device.
If ya not fan of hardware control - ya can swap.
I'd stay with the Play until it dies if I'm honest, it's still a really solid phone.

Unless you are not playing PSXperia, EPSXE or FPSE games (for that xPlay will be good enough forever), be free to upgrade your phone to any newest that you can buy...
Comparing hardware of 2013 and 2011 is just... Not comparable... Ofcorse new hardware will better then the old one, the question is, is old hardware good enough for your taste?
I am also planning on buying new phone in next few months (maybe Xperia L or SP), but xPlay will remain my PSX game platform (And it was her main purpose in the last one and the half year). Untill it die...
Keep your play 4 ever

"Any reasons to stick with Xperia Play ?"
You gotta be kidding me. Nothing, Absolutely nothing beats a controller when it comes to gaming. The mere sight of a smart phone that doesn't at least have a keyboard makes me throw up. I absolutely hate touch screen keyboards also, but that's something I realize I have to live with when it comes to modern day phones. My last phone was an N900 which had a keyboard, that was like 4 yrs ago. My current phone is now the xperia play and will be until i see another device with a controller or keyboard built in.
Just goes to show how much i hate touch screen only devices.
Thank you guys for replying and sharing me your opinions.
And to be honest, I lost my interest in gaming on mobiles since I bought an Xbox 360 ( 3 mounths ago ).
The only problem with this alcatel is it does not have a development forum here, so I think I will only miss custom ROMs, other than that I don't think I will regret my decision.

Sounds reasonable.
Im looking at the upgrading this way: what do I gain from 3 extra CPU cores ? Does it enable me many new possibilities ?
Does more GPU power/better graphics matter if I cant enjoy the game ?
IMO, Xplay has too small RAM and internal memory but I dont see any huge benefits in upgrading to new phone.
I bought a tablet that is decently powered but again, I dont see a huge added benefit of the power. Its mostly visible in web browsing.

I love my Xperia Play because of the actual buttons. Touch screen controls are good, but nothing beats tactile feedback. For simple games, touch screen controls work just fine, but the Xperia Play wasn't a simply gaming phone device, it was able to play all my N64 games, and PSX.
With the release of the Ion Play, does that mean the end of our beloved buttons?
The Ion is the new American flagship for Sony Ericsson. It's not going to replace the Play, it's out because Sony didn't have any carrier-backed flagship in the US (the Arc wasn't available with carrier subsidies). It's not going to phase out the Play or anything.

It is not "Ion Play" its just simply "Ion" its not a 2nd Xperia Play or as such. All Sony devices will be Playstation Certified.
My understanding is that they support the use of Playstation 3 SIXAXIS/DualShock 3 controllers.
I find it very stupid that every new regular Sony phones are getting the "PS Certified" tag without the actual gamepad. Its a promotion skill but at least make some effort like in the original XPlay. For example I love the new Sony Xperia S but how is it a PS certified ?
Sent from my R800i using MIUI
They want to create a gaming ecosystem for mobile gaming, which is not a bad idea. However, no one else is biting the hook, and it would be nice to have more choices for gaming than Sony's phones. Imagine some PS certified Galaxy S III or a Nexus Tablet made by Sony and PS certified. That'd certainly kickstart the ecosystem's popularity. It would damage Sony's hardware sales too, but since they're making a loss with them, it wouldn't be that big an issue.

Read my post above. It makes perfect sense.
the first part of the video explains what i mean here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OxkVclkM8Y
i just don't like the idea of tagging a device "PS Certified" which has tiny little virtual buttons on screen to play with

Its not all about playing on a tiny screen with tiny buttons all the time. Tablet S already has official sixaxis controller support for ps suite and we think sony mite roll this out over the hole ps certified device range like you see sony demoing with the ion here below, so there is a point to certified device's.
To see this concept in action check out this custom xperia arc we made with full ps suit early here http://www.xperiagamer.com/News/xperiagamers-plarc.html

Remember that this is a fan concept art, it's not an official work or design from Sony.
I couldn`t imagine this ever becoming a reality, the simple issue of how the phone would slide up and down with those analogue sticks sticking out is enough of a problem.
That is so not even close to what reality would be, if an Xperia Play 2 even ever happens.
I don't know why people keep insisting on posting these xperia play 2 forms on here. Every time ones posted it receives nothing but the same replies as the other xperia play 2 forms. STOP POSTING THESE!!!!! We know the rumors, were all big fans of Sony's gaming products! Unless some news pops up with ACTUAL photos of a prereleased model we don't care. I thought you guys would of learned from the release of this phone, I know I did. The rumors for this phone started about 2 years before the release. So by my count you still have a year and a half till this phone comes out and that's if it actually does. So for the sake of the form and to save your a#$ from being chewed out don't post unless its GOOD NEWS!

If I recall properly, while the device sales weren't tremendous, this device managed to bring out a niche of gamers who actually buy games. It would make sense for them to hold off the release until they can't milk the Xperia Play's gaming side any longer, particularly if they're making money with Xperia Play Optimized licensed games as I suppose they are.
They sold a total of less than 1000 games the psx ones and the optimised did much better but still not great they need better and more games and pssuite as promised what we all want is console quality games on our plays like gta 3 they should really port the successful ps 1 and 2 games like god of war prince of persia silent hill etc they would make MUCH better sales and everyone would be happy

These are my Choices:
HTC XL (UK-This is Now not Retailed anymore )
HTC One X (Looks Sweet)
Xperia S (Not Sure Disappointing to me)
Galaxy Note
Tablets:
Galaxy Note (Looks Swell!)
Xoom 2 (xyloem For US)
Tranformer Prime
iPad (3rd Gen)
Because of the timing of me getting this phone, I would have gotten the Droid Incredible 2. The gamepad on this phone just screamed at the gamer in me. And now I find that I only game when I have time to kill. Sad, really, but I like this little phone.
Xperia Play Still has Games Like Jak &Daxter to be Mined etc.
Sony dont relise the Profit they'd make
Xperia Arc S Probably, I was originally going to buy that, but I saw the Xperia Play in "Related Items"
Probably the DroidX2, Droid Incredible 2, or maybe even the Galaxy Nexus
But I would never trade my Play. I use it more than my laptop, or KF.

My favourite phones at the moment are Xperia S and Galaxy Nexus, but Xperia Play was my first Android phone and none of the others would make me spend more than 70 euros.
Either the newest Galaxy or the Xperia S.
iPhone 4S, and an iControlPad attachment.

It's support is a joke compared to Xperia PLAY... but without the Xperia PLAY, that would definitely be top dog.
My first choice was a Xperia Arc S but then I saw the beast the Xperia Play so had to get it !
I like the Xperia Play I am definitely gonna keep it for another year or two until it gets really old and dated or maybe i'll just keep it for the emulators.
Would have held onto my X10 and probably have purchased an Xperia S last week.
I'd of got a Sensation XL ..... Oh wait, i got one anyway
Sent from my HTC Sensation XL with Beats Audio X315e using Tapatalk
I had the Note (gsm) which is the best Android device I've owned so far. I sold it since it doesn't support 1700mhz, then to only get the Play later, because the idea of slide out gamepad is too cool. I'm looking at the Galaxy SIII next naturally. Or wait until the Nexus completely lost its value and sell for $300 (its doing a very good job at losing value from 750 to 400 by now).
About the iControlPad. I dusted it off yesterday after being stored for nearly a year with the intention of selling it. At first, I didn't know how to set it up and could only get it to work with a few apps. I read the support page again and put it in SPP mode running with latest Bluez IME which made it work exactly like the Play gamepad, so it basically worked with all games that support hardware keys, even exact same keys configuration as the Play. If you put it in HID mode which is intended to work as gamepad for Mac and PC, it won't work correctly for Android. Also it has internal 4000mah battery, so you could get a male-male mini to microUSB cable from eBay for charging purposes. Not as portable as a slideout gamepad, but its a much better controller than other bluetooth alternative I've seen.
I would get arc or the s.
Sent from my R800i using XDA
I'd get the Xperia Arc/S or Galaxy Nexus. But not for at least a year or two, I'm loving it! As for a tablet, if there wasn't a Galaxy Tab, I'd go for the Galaxy Note, or Transformer Prime. And perhaps the 3rd Gen iPad, but I would never forgive its non-open-source-ness, and not if I can't jailbreak it, THEN it could be actually worth it.

Thanks for keeping us informed on alternatives to the xp.
8gb storage, Micro TF card and no Bluetooth are killers. No specifics on playtime per charge. Also these things always have terrible descriptions. Hire a translator. Ex: Conflicting spec. page. One line says dual speakers another says single.

This is interesting. Since Sony are stopping making portable gaming consoles due to the loss of sales (because of smartphones apparently) maybe sony can make a smartphone that is both good to use as a phone and as a gaming device, the xperia play 2!
Though wasn't the main reason sony ditched the play because of how it conflicted with their psp sales? So we can only hope i guess
That's just the end of life of the PSP. It's been for a long time on the market. I haven't expected it to be still produced to be honest. Either way - I'm not really sure about the Xperia Play 2. I'd love to see that, but not if they'd treat it like our old xperia play, which is still a great device for me.
I'm buying an iPhone 5S this week from Swappa. I've never wanted an iPhone, but I have 2 iPad's and a lot of iOS games purchased. This is going to be awesome.

If the PS Vita were selling well, I think it would be possible. But an Xplay 2 now will be definitely sentence the vita to death, that's why I think sony will stay with the idea of a new Xplay on the closet for some more time.
you see sony is so backwards! They didnt want to make the xperia play 2 in the first place because they were worried about the xperia play 2 interfering with psp and vita sales and now there killing the psp because its killing there xperia sales maybe? make up your minds or more importantly make the xperia play 2! People want a multi device these days not just games, people want to call on the same device that they play hardcore games on.

I don't know if you haven't read the article or if you just don't know the difference between a PSP and a PSVita. If Sony is stopping selling PSP is because it's a console presented ten years ago! It has nothing to do with the smartphones.
