Though it's great that the Note 3 will come with Jellybean 4.3, Kit Kat 4.4 has already been announced. I see that 4.3 will be coming to the Note 2 and the GS3 sometime in October, I'm presuming to get everyone caught up to speed with the Note 3. How long would it be, before we could expect 4.4 to roll out on the Note 3? Just wanting general thoughts/opinions.

It doesn't really matter does it? If the device works fine with 4.3 why would we instantly need 4.4. Just my 2c

Nobody knows what 4.4 is about, nobody has much clue about GN3 performance till we start using it, and we have a thread about 4.4 on GN3. I couldn't care less about version of android as long as the phone works perfectly.
If someone is really fussed about 4.4, here's some facts:
It will take time to come to GN3, because note-series is not about latest android. It's about all proprietary stuffs stuffed into the handset.
If you want 4.4 at the earliest, get a Nexus - end of discussion.
You won't get 4.4 on GN3 for probably 4-5 months after release. You know this very well, infact everyone knows that. What more you would want to discuss here is a mystery to me. If I am totally honest here, there is nothing to discuss on this topic.
Everybody knows how this (update scenario) works, yet we spend countless time in unconstructive debate.

Moving to Q&A
A Nexus device is usually the only one to get the new OS for a couple of months. We will see devices announced at CES likely with 4.4 on them (maybe) but as to the GN3 getting it, late spring into early summer. Think April to June time frame depending on when it gets released. Verizon of course being DEAD LAST!

Some of the features will be available on the Nexus 7, some won't and you'll need to get a whole new device costing a small fortune to get the full update. It might break things along the way without giving you a way back.
....but then I remember it's Android and not Apple!

Being part of the whole Nexus line, there's a good chance we'll get 4.2 pushed out when the Nexus 4 and 10 get released. Google will be keen to have its flagship line all under the same version.

I agree. Google made it pretty clear (to me at least) that the Nexus line will be receiving the 4.2 update. There was absolutely no mention of Nexus 7 not receiving certain aspects of the update. I would say that Nexus 7 would receive the update the same day the 4 and 10 are released as well.

This is a joke for you guys who don't get it. All Nexus devices get updated I think. I think even old ones like the Nexus S and all that.
Lol well if he meant it as a joke it didn't read like one. Especially since a new device owner was asking about something he deemed a legit concern. If it was meant as a joke then my fault.

Google was supposed to release the 4,2 update on October 29th, but according to Asus it has been delayed ever so slightly.Asus says to expect an update to android 4.2 very soon.

Got a reliable source on that? I'm guessing no because it's not true. Google has never released an OS on the day it was announced, and when they announce a new device, they never release the OS for older hardware until the new device is available. So the correct answer is to expect the update in the weeks following the N4/N10 release. Hopefully it will be out within a week, but it can take longer.
Google has said they will start rolling out 4.2 from Nov 11th, 2 days before new devices release.
Seriously? So touchwiz has problems on the note 2 but a now ancientish phone is recieving this update now? Thats it final straw. Bye bye note 2. Im getting a nexus!

So much hate for the only other manufacturer that actually does update their hardware for a decent number of Android versions if you exclude the Nexus devices.
Sure they are slow but come on what if you bought an LG or HTC , you would be lucky if your device got a single version upgrade.
we samsung customers are lucky enough compared to other brands that rarely provide updates to their phones. don't worry I'm pretty sure we'll get one sooner or later. if not I'll be selling this and my S4 and get a new one that deserves a love. nevertheless i love this note2. and my S4 but i love this note more

LOL precisely. Go on and get a Nexus FFS. I'm just waiting 4.2.2/4.3 for touchwiz features. Otherwise I might as well flash Cyanogenmod and get it over with meh. Not really fair to be honest. Every Samsung device I've had got at least 1 major update within a few months of its release. It's the the older devices, ie note 2, s3 that will wait ages or not get it. The S4 + Note 3 will get kit kat by January if history repeats. Also in the past Samsung have denied updates to older devices due to hardware limits, Google are claiming kit kat can run happy on 512mb Ram so who knows, maybe old devices might just get a break (pun intended, sorry )

This.
As always, samsung is super slow with updates, so don't bother in at least 6 or 7 months, and even with that, the note line is never the first one, so probably S4 and S5 will get 4.4 2 or 3 months before the note.
Saw someone quote a samsung rep tweet about them being more concerned about getting most of the older devices to 4.3 first. And about note 3 having to wait at least 2 months for 4.4

on other news, HTC pledges to get 4.4 out to its HTC One in 90 days, Google Play Edition, in 15 days...
would be nice if Samsung could make and keep to a similar commitment
This is one thing, coming from iOS which is absolutely mind blowing how Samsung doesn't give a rats ass about being up to date. Why own a Android device that runs old software 1 month after buying it and not be allowed to update it.

They did sell a significantly larger amount of Note 3's in a much shorter period than previous Note devices. So who knows? We had 4.3 well before the flagship S4...
As for the N2 (and S3) still lagging behind, that's because they skipped 4.2.

To quote Engadget :
Update: There's still no official word on why this is the case, but sources close to the company have pointed the finger at a different hardware issue on the Galaxy Nexus: its Texas Instruments-built chipset. The company is out of the mobile business and as such isn't in a great position to give the support necessary for continuing OS upgrades -- presumably some of those 1,700 employees let go in the shift away from mobile could have helped. Now we'll have to see if the community can pick up where the corporations left off or if this is the end of the road for the Gnex and its other OMAP-based kin like last year's Kindle Fire HD, Nook HD and Droid Bionic.
Seeing as we're talking Samsung devices here, I think we should be ok

The note 2 actually came shipped with 4.1 jb.
I don't really know about the fuzz with updates. It's not like apple pushes em out on a monthly basis, only when needed. Same for Samsung, people should stop whining about fast updates, making them work etc takes a lot of time. If they release it early and there are a few bugs people will whine about that.
If the phone works and it does very smoothly here under 4.3 why do you instantly need an update?

Could someone (in theory) create a stock google 4.4 rom for our Note 3?
I know stuff like eye detection and the S-Pen and god knows what else wouldn't work..
AOSP roms won't be out for a while until Samsung gives the community the binary drivers.
Samsung are slow at doing, only in Oct did they release the binaries for S4 6 months after release.
In theory you can download 4.4 and cook your own rom but without drivers from Samsung it won't be stable or certain hardware will not work at all.
If you want the latest and greatest Andriod then you should have brought a Nexus phone.

Cm11 kit kat was a huge improvement on my original droid razr. Ram management was awesome compared to stock. I hope samsung gets it right and it's not bogged down like 4.3. I've seen my note using 2.2 out of the 2.4 gb or ram available for no reason other than samsung apps running in the background. I know I shouldn't be too picky about it but thats also why I bought a phone with 3gb of ram so it would be a non issue.
KitKat has started release in Poland via Kies and official source code available now for developers. May be just around the corner. But we will just have to wait and see as usual.

That's because people get caught up in the hype, expecting the next official release to be as good as the custom roms put out by developers. Or, they just don't understand the all together. I personally have not gotten excited over any release. If I want it that bad, I just grab a rom, which in most cases have the release in it plus other goodies. And I'll have it sometimes months ahead of the official release.
