Sleep of Death/Deadlock - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I have my phone rooted running a modified version of CM10.2. Recently, my phone started going into a "sleep of death" while charging overnight, where the phone is still on but is nonresponsive, requiring me to reboot. So I downloaded Safe Charge and it helped... Kind of. Now instead of going SoD every night, it only does it sometimes.
So, is what I'm experiencing part of the infamous JSS ROM deadlocks I've been hearing about? And is there some way to fix this, or am I just going to have to deal with it until KitKat comes out?

SoD seems to show up randomly... I've heard that JWR ROMs have less SoDs than JSS so you could try one, or if your not into switching ROMs here is an app (free) that could help you. It's called Safe Charge, and the comments say that it works great.

If you read my OP, I already have Safe Charge installed and am still getting sod. I really like the ROM I'm using, but I may just have to switch to avoid this unfortunate issue.

Oops I guess I missed that part... I'm pretty sure that you can find a near similar ROM/kernel setup for JWR... If all else fails, try stock...
(Oh and if you can still RMA it, do it. People have speculated that its a hardware issue...)

No worries. I'm trying out SlimBean because I hear that doesn't have the issues, but not being able to use Franco with it is a bit of a bummer. In fact I haven't yet found a third party kernel that does work with it.

I had this happen to me with a particular rom. Everything was great until id lock the phone, then try to unlock and see nothing but a black screen. I switched roms and it never happened again.

Screen unresponsive

Basically, my N7's screen is frequently unresponsive. I was trying to start something in my launcher, and tried pressing it at least 6 times, but nothing happened. Then I tried swiping between launcher pages, and that worked just fine the first time.
This just started happening on an almost constant basis within the last 30-60 minutes, and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this, or heard of anyone else experiencing it. I'm running the latest Minimus with Jassy's latest kernel (I just flashed them this morning, but it was probably 4-5 hours ago at least), with the DPI set to 290 (I just raised it from 280 to see if that would help anything). I also cleared the cache and dalvik.
Any ideas?
My girlfriends tablet has done that too, then it just randomly goes back to just fine

Why don't you try stock and see if you have an issue. This would allow you to rule things out at least.

Same issue here...both stock and CleanROM
me as well. And this is my second tablet after returning the first one for dead pixels
My tablet is stock rooted and I have just experienced this. I had to reboot in order to fix it. Hopefully this doesn't happen again.

Same here this has happened to me on stock, but a reboot fixed it.
I've only experienced this using Chrome. it got so bad that I'm using the molasses-in-the-winter-going-up-hill Firefox browser just to be able to web surf.
Same here stock, and clean ROM.. Haven't noticed anything on kanged cm nor pa yet. Can't get otg to work worth a crap either I bought chainfires app to help with otg worked with stock based ROMs but not cm based ROMs .. I'm pissed I bought the 16 GB model..

It happened to me as well (complete stock). Mostly (if not all) instances were with Chrome. I don't remember it happening again since I switched to Chrome beta. (Fingers crossed).
I just took mine back to Best Buy and exchanged it for the 32gb model. The guy at the store asked if anything was wrong with the tablet and I told him that it would freeze up and I would have to reboot in order to fix it. He told me that all tablets and phones freeze like that and that I should reboot the device at least once a day to prevent the freezing of the screen. I thanked him and told him that I would do that. These salesmen must think that everyone is as dumb as they are.
I hope my new tablet doesn't have the same problem, because if it does I might give up on the new nexus 7.

Nexus Rebooting?

Hi all,
I am currently on Cleanrom 1.3 with faux kernel. No overclock. Today I took my nexus off the charger and it rebooted itself. I understand that using custom kernel and rom will cause some instability but I've heard that the newest nexus 7 does have random reboots stock. I am still under return period, and I am just wondering if anyone else had experienced this and will you keep this knowing it might be a software issue.

I am on stock.
I had a reboot problem with mine. It showed about %50 battery life when it would first startup, then suddenly it would reboot, and continue the boot loop. I reset/clear cache and it would still happen. Then I fully charged the battery then it worked again. I exchanged it because I don't want to deal with the hassle and did not find anyone else with this problem. Only had 2 more days to return it, so I went for it.
I think the problem I actually had was the battery, it was reporting to the device that it was about 50% when it probably had none. I kept wondering why after so long of heavy usage the battery wasn't ran down already. Since you just took it off the charger, I don't know about your case.
Hopefully I won't see the problem with the exchanged one. I say, if you suspect a hardware issue, replace it. If it is a software issue, maybe they will fix it with an update. Good luck.
Mine reboots allot on stock, very annoying!

Stuck on Google screen

Ever since the 4.3 update, my nexus seems to restart randomly and just sit on Google splash screen. Can't say its repeatable, just random. Usually once a day. At first I thought it had to do with a specific ROM. But its done it on all 4.3 Roms I've tried. Then I thought it had something to do with charging too long. But it's done if off the charger too.
Anyone else experience this?
I have that problem too. Ended up restoring my 4.2.2 backup.
Is there maybe the need to update official firmware to update the bootloader or anything? Don't know where to go from here.
I was using twrp 2.5, going to upgrade to 2.6.2 and see if that makes a difference.

Alright, I fixed my problem. As soon as I updated twrp the problem went away, that would be my suggestion if you haven't.

Maybe made a difference in the flashing of it? That's all I can think of.

Huge battery woes

You probably get these all the time so apologies.
I've done the google and the msm_hsic_host is referenced for when you connect the phone via usb.
But the problem I have is it's there all the time, regardless of using a computer USB cable or using a wall charger.
These appear far too often, reboots help but there seems to be something wrong and I cannot figure it out.
Any and all help / advice welcome becuase it's really fustrating.
Cheers
What OS are you running? Could it be an app you installed? Have you tried flashing to stock to see what happens?
On stock 4.2.2
Will have to see on the app front.. Might do a purge and see if it helps.

Good luck. Please report back with your findings.
I was on stock 4.4.2 and got pretty good battery life.
Lol OP, I think what you're using is 4.4.2 not 4.2.2. It's time to get it right now, don't you think?
Btw, are you using stock kernel or custom? Either way try flashing stock kernel back and format dalvik and cache. If you're using custom kernel, same..flash stock kernel back then flash your kernel.
Sigh you are right. 4.4.2 of course.
Everything is stock on my nexus4, haven't even rooted it.
Which is why this behaviour is so annoying, might understand if I'd have played around with roms etc.
I've deleted loads of apps, may remove some more today if it doesn't let out. Will then think about going for a wipe down.
Cheers for the suggestions.

Maybe this will help you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1999368
From what i've read, this wakelock is not about the USB cable per se. The 3g modem is connected to the phone as an external USB device, which is controlled by the msm_hsic_host.
In few words, every time your phone needs something from the 3g modem, msm_hsic_host is triggered.
Im on 4.4.2 stock rooted and every time I'm in a place with low signal this wake lock drains a good amount of my battery.
Maybe you should try different kernels to see if that helps.

Using other on better battery stats shows the phone is never in deep sleep.
Now just to find out why.

You need to show us the info from Partial Wakelocks, not Kernel.
Unleashed by my Nexus 4
Thanks yeah I know that would be more helpful so apologies that I haven't.
Wanted to if possible avoid rooting the phone but I think I'll do that this evening to see what's going on.

Experiencing random freezes on 7.1.2

An about a month ago switched to 7.1.2 from 6.0.1.
Stock rooted version. The phone is one and a half years old.
Since then I'm having random freezes that only pressing the power button and reboot will help.
I can't figure out what causes these freezes.
Anybody else having this ?

How did you update to 7.1.2 was it stock image ?
Yes. Stock image

Try a factory reset see if that helps really hard to say. Are you using substratum try removing overlays. If using custom kernel resore to stock. If it was me I would completely wipe my phone including internal. Then flash a fresh factory image to rule out any software related issues. Just make sure you back up all your pics etc.
I'm using stock kernel. The freezes are random. Can't figure out what triggers them.
The freeze can be while the phone connected to charger, lying on a table or when I on Facebook or something else...

There apps that you can get that will show you logs of what's going on in the background. Catlog or syslog are ones that I know of. They can be hard to understand but might give you some clues to what's going on. After the phone does it thing quickly check the log and see if any errors from apps and such that stand out.
