hello, i have my s4 snapdragon version from a month now,i tried lots of differents rom to get rid of lag, but even in the smoothest or lightest rom, there is always a low framerate or microlag in the animation of closing and opening apps, i come from nexus 4 and xiaomi m2s, but i dont know really what is the cause of this, anyone got any idea? disabling hardware overlay helps a bit, but battery goes down very quickly,i hate this animation low framerate

Did you try changing the animation/window/transition speeds in the developer settings? Usually makes a good difference for me. I removed a lot of bloat in /system or you could disable any apps that you don't use to stop extra things running in the background. I also installed greenify to hiberate apps after they are used to stop them using resources.

yes, i tried, but i dont like fast animation, i like the normale animations, usually low framerate appears when i unlock the device, now im on crdroid aosp, and im going to try slim rom to see if changes something.... but i dont know what is this microlag, because with nexus and xiaomi all was smooth and fluid, with s4 is fast the same as nexus and xiaomi but no more smooth on animations
edit: i found the proble: it is the micro sd, when i put off micro sd and i use phone without it it's really fast and smooth, so what am i suppose to do now? change baseband?

Interesting, what about reformatting the sd card on a PC to see if that helps in case its corrupted or clogged with older data? Just copy the files you want to keep to PC and copy back again once formatted.
i just reboot phone and put in sd again, now the micro lag it's very little than before, but when i open gallery, it happens, i read somewhere that some kernels have problem with mga baseband about micro sd lag, so i dont know if it's bettere to flash a new modem or format sd

What size is your sd card? I'm currently on MGA after updating using a stock rooted ROM via Odin, Ive got a 32Gb sd card and to be honest everything runs very smoothly. I've got plenty of widgets on my homescreen as well but swiping and app transitions remain smooth. I notice there is a small delay when opening the gallery app, nothing serious but just slightly more than other apps, though when it opens its responsive enough. I would try formatting the sd card first to see if that helps.

my sd card is 16 gb, i saw that it is formatted in fat32, yes with stock rom the problem doesnt exist (is what i read) but with aosp roms the problem is here, because they dont have support for exfat, but if my sd is formatted in fat32, what type i should format? ntfs? or it's better to change modem with odin?

Very strange, I always seem to read people commenting how fast the aosp ROMs are! My own ROM is a rooted stock touchwiz and the speed is generally fine. Which ROM did you go for then?

is it because i have a class 2 memory card?
it lags and i get the htc screen alot after i exit from an app.
if i get a class 6, will the phone run as smooth as it did with the stock rom on there?
Which ROM are you using? Could be something else.
If you are rocking a class 2 card, you might want to not use the Apps2SD feature of rooted roms, you have plenty of space on the phone.
When I first rooted my MT3G I wasnt using the SD card for apps and it ran so much faster on the Cyanogen ROM than on the stock ROM.
im using the one click method. im fairly new to the whole rooting stuff, so im not to savvy just yet.
i believe it runs off the memory card if im not mistaken
Be mindful.

If you utilized the One-Click Root Method (correctly) you shouldn't have immediately run into any issues. In fact, if you played it safe and flashed a Cyanogen ROM - hopefully stable at first...then you should be in great shape. Obviously, since that doesn't appear to be the case. Consider this:
- Upgrading your card to a Class 6, the rewrite speeds exceed that of the standard Class 2 and 4 cards.
- Wipe, re-flash, and install your applications to a reformatted SD card.
- If your card isn't partitioned to some extent, might I suggest that you search a tutorial on HOW-TO (one you can fully understand) partition the card properly.
- Always, always, always...NANDROID backup a fully functional ROM - just in case you should ever encounter a problem.

if you are running hero, it will be slow... if you want a fast rom for the mytouch, try cyanogen or jacxrom
How do I disable the apps2sd feature? I'm running cyanogen 4.0.4 if that makes a difference
if you dont have linux ext partitions in the sd card, it wont do it.
I hope I am not hallucinating but I've been trying to flash every ROM in this forum and what I have noticed is that when I flash the same ROM with NO SD card inserted I get a faster ROM response even if I re-insert it back when windows finishes setup.
I have asked a friend to check what I was saying and he did notice a difference; Maybe it has something to do with the windows setup preparation after flashing but I am sure it is not the same for me. Can anyone confirm ?
This is interesting never tried it. Thanks for sharing m8.
interesting.. Maybe it tries to index all files on the SD card which causes more time? Have no clue yet on how to test this properly.
Well dont really know about this, but many chefs writed to remove sim + MemCard before flashing their ROMS. So I do this everytime I'm not flashing throught MemCard.
xeon,
I noted same effect yesterday when I flashed last rom (first time without sd card). In that case I noted a faster reboot only after a HR. During a normal use of blackstone, after last flash, I noted a normal boot, not fast reboot.
For me only if I flash with no memory card inserted I get a better ROM performance. We need a ROM cooker to confirm.

same here, but the from a technical point of view it doesn't make sense that your rom is quicker. In the installation process this makes sence but not afterwards

yes it looks like it does... i'll try it next time i flash.
The mem card must is being checked for some reason, the reason i can say this is i have a copilot autorun file two folders down that wants to start being installed straight after a flash, even before i start using my HD2.

Well I have done some testing. I can 100 % say that on my ROM's flashing without Storage card does make a difference. The benchmarks are faster, but more importantly it is more smooth and stable. I will be instructing all my users to flash without storage card, not for the benchmarks but for better stability.
There is some strange things going on with the storage card ever since the Documents tab was introduced. This has also led to problems with Extendir.
I suspect that they could be related.

Does it apply to Hard Reset without SD Card too or does it only work with flashing wihtout the SD Card?
Sounds interesting, although counter to everything we like!

Just so you all know, this only works once!
i.e. if you flash with no SD card then use the rom it will be fast, the second you insert the SD card, it starts up a service/dll which slows down the device again.
Also some of these benchmarks deactivate the SD card service before the Benchmark takes place to give the look of higher speeds.
The ONLY way this will work permanent is if you NEVER insert the SD card!! But we all will which makes this abit pointless!!

According to bobsbbq, benchmark results were better when flashing without SD so to say that the benchmark tool deactivate the SD service is not accurate. To be honest, I've experienced the same feeling as bobsbbq when flashing without SD even if reinserted... device response feels faster and smoother. I still didn't find any logical as for flashing and hard resetting twice etc..

Do you use manila 2.5 with Documents tab?
I have similar performance problem when i use this version of Manila.
Nothing too big. I've searched everywhere on this and apparently this is supposed to work, but:
I can't get Live Wallpapers to work
and I can't get the Nexus Launcher to work. Both of these just force close.
Oh, and how do I use Apps2sd? Its greyed out in the settings menu and I can't touch it. Thanks in advance.
All of this has already been answered. Just search the thread of the rom you are using. I promise, its in there.
Thanks haha. Should've done that. But I didn't get anything answered on the Nexus Launcher. It just keeps force closing. Would you choose ADW or Nexus?
Hey Nikolai, what ROM did you use? I've been really busy with a new job and didn't want to get crazy after (finally) rooting, so I went with Ivan's 1.0 ROM. It's essentially the basic Verizon setup without the junk, and overclocking. Apps2SD doesn't work...grrr.
I'd like to try something with Apps2SD and Live wallpapers, but I don't want anything buggy.

Launcher Pro is a lot faster than both of those. I would choose that.
im just wondering. now that im rooted what specific apps do you guys reccomend? i have Fresh Rom installed with overclocking just curious what other utilities i should get
A2SD has to have the SD card partitioned. You can do this in the Recovery menu where you flash new ROMS. It will erase everything so make a backup of what you want from your SD Card first then in the partitioning setup it ask for a swap and ext3 size default it is 32mb for swap and 512mb for ext3. After that you should be able to turn A2SD on.
If you choose, and shortly after you turn A2SD on you will, to stop using A2SD repeat the same steps for partitioning the SD card but when you are asked sizes scroll the track ball down till it is 0 for both swap and ext3.
I don't like it because I don't feel like buying a Class 4 SD card or higher to make it worth while. If you are using the stock SD card you got with the phone it will make your phone boot slower and take longer to access the Apps.
I don't know what ROM you are using but the KaosFroyo ROM is a great ROM it is small and that will save you more room for apps if that is what you are looking for.
this thread has nothing to do with development for the eris. can someone please move this to general?

I think I know why apps2sd slowed down your phone. You selected 32mb for swap. I selected 0 for my swap and it's been fast on every apps2sd enabled rom I've used. I bought a class 6 sd card thinking it would make my phone even faster but that was joke. My wife's Eris has the stock class 2 card and I can't tell a difference in the speeds.
I also agree with LexusBrian400 above. Launcher Pro is my favorite launcher. Play around in the preferences for a bit. It has some cool options.
snyluc13 - You need setcpu (or some other app) to control the overclock. Do not set on boot until you have found a setting that wont lock your phone.

I use the external SD card version, but neither of them have ever caused battery drain for me. They drain at about the same rate as stock on my phone.
The one I use is the one I wrote myself. Check the dev forum, I posted it there. If you don't like the RyanZA version, you could try mine, but the -loop one does the same thing. If you don't have a fast micro-SD installed, I don't know if I should recommend that route, your speed will depend a LOT on how fast your SD card can transfer data.
I even included an auto-partitioning ZIP file that will create and format the partitions for you. It does, however, delete everything on the external card, so back it up first.
Root and Clockwork recovery are required for my stuff.

This thread will probably help you if you follow the points step by step. It´s originally written for the Note 3 but can be equally applied for the S4. If it doesn´t, then your SC card is likely to be broken and you´ll need to get a new one.
Hi,
Thanks for the reply but I don't think this will work, nevertheless I will try it an post the result here. My card is definately not broken because it works in my computer and in other devices as well.

KitKat disabled SD Card support for anything other than regular files. this means you cannot move apps to a SD card anymore, you have to roll back to a Jelly Bean rom, or use SDFix, run it, and then use Link2SD to move your apps.
