Unfortunately you won't be able to do this very easily as Windows Mobile cannot just switch languages. You'll have to install an English ROM, which needs a pretty high level of technical skill (and I don't think the tools to do this are available yet).
Where in Taiwan are you planning to buy it? If it's from somewhere in Taipei's Guang Hua computer market, they *might* be able to install an english ROM for you, but it may also be too early for them to have the tools to do this yet.
Another option is if you happen to be going to Hong Kong, you can get the Touch HD in the Sincere Podium mobile phone market at Mong Kok, but they aren't particularly cheap (because they are all imported from Europe). The price will come down when the HD is officially launched in HK.

They may have made a German-specific ROM because Germanys laws on such things are stricter/different, though, so it is more than possible that you do have a German-only device.

There are no laws, that prohibit a manufacturer from adding multiple language to a device. It's their choosing. HTC and Samsung phones I have used and am using come with a couple of selections, as did my old Nokias and even my coffee maker.

Mine too, so I asked @AcerDeutschland about a possible addition of at least English in future updates and got the usual: "Can't tell you now, but we'll keep you posted!" reply back. I would add a link but I'm not allowed yet so an image it is. If they don't make it available though I'll probably flash a UK or US ROM manually.
I can understand making the wireless channels and power levels different, but for fsck's sake, we should all have the full array of keyboards and UI languages. Other than to comply with law, region locking is ****. The locked bootloader is bad enough, hopefully they fix these issues and open the hardware and software instead of being goons.
in germany there is a law forbidding google to call it's mail service gmail. that is why they had to lock it down

Okay so basically I want to do on my Nexus 7 what I do on my Windows PC. Have Jelly Bean display in English but the on-screen keyboard to have a standard German Qwertz Layout.
On a Windows PC this is easy language & keyboard settings are separate. But having a scout around the Android forums on here & the Nexus 7 forums. This is apparently problematic.

Check out the Android app store. A search for "Keyboard German" got 348 hits.
For example, Slideit offers 45 free language and layout packs. That just happens to be the first one I pulled up.

But I simply want to do this in Jelly Bean without an external app. I'm not going looking for apps unless I know that Jelly Bean isn't capable of displaying in one language & using a different keyboard. Are you saying that android can't cope with such a basic requirement natively? And that I have no choice but to use an independent app & shell out money for a basic OS requirement.

Maybe someone with a pre-production Nexus 7 can tell you what the keyboard supports out of the box. I will say the language on the keyboard has nothing to do with the language the device displays in.

The one you recommended costs nearly 3 quid.
I never said I won't use apps. My question was not about apps. My question was does Jelly Bean support this. I just assumed that a feature this basic must be stock. So I thought I would post the question & hope someone that actually knows the answer would happen along. Or for that matter someone familiar enough with other Android incarnations who could make a best guess. Basic logic dictates that I see what it can do natively before filling it up with unnecessary apps.
Not a recommendation of mine - I said that was just the first one that search pulled up.
Older versions of Android support 13 languages on the multi-touch keyboard, including German.
My post was intended to point out, if by chance, Nexus 7 does not have what you need, there is an app for it...
So does somebody else know or have any actual insight as to whether android can handle this natively? I'd be really grateful for some info from peeps who actually know their way around android. Because I definitely don't.
Just tried it on my Galaxy Nexus (ICS) and what you require is there out the box. You can pick from a variety of keyboard languages without changing the system language.

I ask everyone who has a device from Samsung company not to close the tab and read to the end of this post.
I'll start with the prehistory. My first Android-tablet was Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7. I was incredibly happy because it was a unique device. Screen, build quality, metal, processor and capacious battery. I could not get enough of. I bought it for $ 721. it was in June of last year, I must say he has a birthday coming up.
And just a month later I got an update ice cream sandwich. It was the best firmware, and no matter what that summer, Google released a jelly bean.
Time passed, and Samsung is not going to renew our wonderful tablet to the latest version of android. I was waiting for. My patience ran out in March 2013.
March 7 I began to send in the forums with the topic of the samsung galaxy tab 7.7 messages with calls about the attack of the official pages of Samsung in social networks messages such as "We want Jelly Bean for Galaxy Tab 7.7!!!".
We are bombarded official page Samsung USA, Samsung and Thailand. I want to believe that they have heard our cries and dissatisfaction. And 29 days ago, Samsung launched the upgrade to Jelly Bean for Thailand. And that's it. certainly present in the firmware English language, but what about those who live in the countries of the CIS? Those who know neither Thai nor English language. The same China and Japan!
29 days have passed. and no region except Thailand did not get updated until now. I wrote about this in support of Samsung, the country where I live (Ukraine), but I was told that there is no information about the update, and until.
So my dear friends, and just those who are indifferent to our problem, and in general the problem of updating all Samsung devices, I urge you to attack samsunga page on facebook and other social networks. I think it will suit us more than the banner of
"I hate samsung for that instead of an update for my device, it produces a copy of it with a modified design !!!."

OK. You have taken the trouble to write this and I have taken the trouble to read it.
My own criticism of Samsung lies in the slowness of the update to the latest versions of Android in the first instance. But Samsung are not alone in this regard, that is not an excuse as such but it is a reality of owning an Android device. That is, outside of a Nexus, I hasten to add to ward off those of a pedantic disposition.
Secondly that this tardy update is exacerbated by the long drawn out releases for each territory's firmware. This was an overall nine month process in the case of Ice Cream Sandwich v4.0.4.
Nonetheless, Samsung did come through and now has released the initial firmwares for Jelly Bean 4.1.2 with, presumably, the remaining territories to follow in due course.
To repeat this fact for emphasis, Samsung has released JB for our devices. I should know, I am running the Singapore version on my Netherlands Tab.
Looking at the state of Android fragmentation generally, I have to content myself with gratitude and applaud Samsung for not forgetting about us. However late in the day this might be. In my opinion it is churlish to whinge in the manner of your post. Lack of patience is a personal failing and so is an inflated sense of personal entitlement. Why look to transfer these personal shortcomings as being Samsung's responsibility?
As for your slogan "I hate samsung for that instead of an update for my device, it produces a copy of it with a modified design !!!." Sorry but I don't understand it, it is doesn't make sense to me and certainly I will not hate Samsung. I would respectfully suggest that you reconsider this effort and phrase your concerns in more positive, constructive and helpful sentiments. Attacking, hating and bombarding are not tactics that I would ever employ.
So there is no way that I will be party to such a petition. Other opinions may vary of course.
Still waiting for ANY kind of official JB support for the P6810 model. Although I blame them, don't hate them for it though.

If you so desperately need JB and don't understand Thai or English, have this resource pages translated in Google.
You'll find instructions to upgrade via Mobile ODIN, using the Thai or Singapore versions.
Then, do the same to download and activate the specific language you need.
I am already running JB with the SIngapore version and Portuguese language pack on a device bought in the Netherlands.
It is not cool to point out Samsung tardiness, while not doing all you can do to solve your problem.
I should also point out that, if you want to be a tech enthusiasts as we all are and a "must have the latest" kind of enthusiast, as you seem to be, you really should find a way of learning English, or you'll be continuously frustrated.

The USA has another reason: Most 7.7 are locked to Verizon. I felt fortunate to receive ICS. Samsung will point to Verizon and say it's up to Verizon and Verizon will say...

It's not just a Samsung problem. Sony too is dragging their feet with the updates. The real issue is android. Instead of a different version for each region, it should be a universal update. And a language pack should be available for download via google play.
I can see why Samsung decided to test out tizen. Although it would be a lot easier to stick with windows....
And samsung should stick to making devices.

Agreed.
Mentioned nearly the same thing in past threads, although I still believe is fully Samsung. Not too difficult for THEM to compile P6810 JB firmware after (Asia) already releasing it for its brother. Maybe they over comitt themselves with too great a range of products, and those products that sell volume have much greater priority?
As you said, language packs are the way to go

All firmware versions work with all devices (of the same model obviously). You can use a modem for any region. You can enable languages that aren't enabled by default. Android allows all that.
The problem isn't Android. It's the manufacturers' internal organization, the specific contracts with local operators, and the required tests by local regulation agencies that limit official availability.

I've already bought a galaxy Note 3 n9006 from China and a day after it I came back to my country, but unfortunately I found it can not work with any Google applications and it can not add Google account and this is a very big problem for me, also it do not have any languages except English , Korean and Chinese. You will need to go through the process of learning how to root and unlock the phone. I hope there will be enough support or assistance for you on this site and that it being an N9006 won't be too problematic.
I am in China, but went out of my way to avoid the N9002, N9006, N9008 or any other variant they are selling here. I get my hands on the N9005 in a few days, so time will tell if it actually bloody works or not in China. It wouldn't surprise me to find that we are stuck in the same same boat on different shores...

Hi there - I'm living in Shanghai and just found this thread. I bought the sm-n9006 today and was excited until I started reading about region locking and non-LTE versions,etc.
This is my first Android device so I'm super new but the bloatware on this thing is annoying! I wanted to remove this stuff and get some Google apps installed but I can't even find the Google play app to get started.
I'm concerned that because it's the mainland china version that this is going to be a bigger pain than it's worth. Should I wait a few months and have a family member buy a US model? Any other reasons to stay clear of this china model?
Is rooting the device a must if I want to get full access to apps, etc.?
Also, it seems this model does not have LTE. Is that correct? I ravel/stay in the US over summer holidays. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated!

The bloatware won't be your main problem, it will be no access to google apps. I wouldn't worry about no LTE, you probably won't notice.
Importantly for Laowai, rooting is necessary, unless you are fluent in chinese, and can therefore use the Chinese markets and apps.
There are quite a few places online to find out how to unlock and root your device - this forum/link above/galaxynote3root.com/etc. I think you'll need about three to four hours of uninterrupted time (as a beginner), a pc (I've used a mac and it is annoying), fast-ish internet speed (to dowload the files), maybe a vpn to look at You tube clips that exemplify (eg, gfwvpn.com is handy and easy to install on both your computer and device), and only a small amount intellect.
You go through the process as above link or elsewhere, and then flash on an updated GAPPS zip if it isn't on the stuff you downloaded.
People here and elsewhere have really made it simple compared to when I first did mine (or maybe I have a little more knowledge). I'm only really just getting the hang of it all now and find it really enjoyable part of Android experience. Actually, just fell in love again with my S3 using CM... Wondering why I am going back to touch wiz, actually...
I'll know on Monday if it was the right choice for me after a day with the new giant phone.

Hah, no problem. I love BJ but our work is in SH for now. If the air quality would get better up north I'd be pushing to move to BJ.
SM-N9006 More than root needed?
I have the same SM-N9006 purchased in China and now back in the USA. Most of the Chinese in the phone was converted to English through the normal settings. The problem is the Apps... they are all Chinese and need to be replaced with English versions. The current ROM blocks all access to the Google Play Store, even if it is side loaded, it is forcibly closed when opened.
Would it not be better to re-ROM the phone with a Samsung stock ROM that will work with the N9006 hardware? Is there such a ROM?
Please be specific on the steps (not the how to's) that need to be taken to use the N9006 in the USA with the Play Store Apps.

I just got this Note 3 SM-N9006, I think mine is rooted that it has everything as if it's normal Note 3 in the US. But I note that it does not show that it connects using 4G/LTE. Does it have 4G/LTE, air command, etc ... capabilities to turn on somehow?
Is there an app that display what really inside your note, I mean the actual hardware of the phone?
N9006 doesn't have 4G/LTE. air command is ok

Really? I wouldn't be too happy to buy a rooted phone from Samsung... you won't get one officially at least. Especially if you bought it in China that would mean its been messed with prior to you buying it. I like my phones coming rooted.
If you had them root it after them unboxing your phone ( hopefully not with Kingo App or some suspicious app that connects to the internet to do its thing ) then your fine. Provided you saw them unbox everything...its not a cheap phone.
If the serial numbers on the box and your phone match ( and the box has some Chinese ) then your fine.
If area under the removable battery didn't have any bright yellow sticker with lots of nasty looking Chinese text, then your fine.
If your in the U.S then its fine you don't need to worry about warranty.... as I am still currently in Shanghai I got mine official with a 2 year warranty.
Sorry if I sound too untrusting of phone sellers here. I have been told of the countless stories about how innocent people buy phones they assume are "new". Just recently I had to help my friend fight some store "official Samsung Store" owner for his replacement of a dead Note 2 dud ( you know those fake recycled phones that are sold in Shenzhen from HongKong that live for 4 months tops ).

I have a FAKE SM-N9006 (Thought was real coz I can access samsung app store). Thinking of installing CWM recovery which I did and now the phone keeps restarting after loading (not a bootloop, but continuous restarting. I can't flash nor restore as I can't no longer go into recovery mode through google MTK tools and hell no way of even entering download mode in the 1st place. Please HELP.:crying:

Hey I got my self a china made note 3. I would very much like to root it to get some bloat ware off, and to also find a android version 5 rom to feel like a cool kid.
It doesn't have a download mode, that is replaced by a Chinese factory mode.

Hello, I am having the same issue someone mentioned about not getting 4G (or even 3G) with the SM-N900 (model N9006) Chinese Note 3. I did not see a solution to the initial post, though. My phone does everything else, but running on Edge is pretty shoddy. I called T-Mobile (my carrier), and they made me enter some settings into the "access point names" tab (apn protocol, port number, etc.). This did not resolve the problem, unfortunately. The back of the phone, under the battery, says it is 3G WCDMA + GSM. T-Mobile runs on GSM, so it should work, I am absolutely stumped. As I said, all the apps work, and it is running Jelly Bean, it's just the slow as molasses internet that bugs me. Is there some sort of solution to this? I could not really find anything worthwhile on any Google searches. Thanks in advance! :fingers-crossed:
