Question for the wizards: I am curious how the storage is organized. If AT&T apps are removed, for instance, will their space be available for use? Or is the storage partitioned so it cannot be used for music or other things?
Thanks!

Ofcourse you can get more storage. But it's not that much compare with the inner storage.

I managed to get the big storage hack installed.
But now I now have:"
Main memory: 45mb
Internal Storage: 12.41
= 57.41mb
But also I have 25.52mb STORAGE.
What can I do with that?
Could I install applications there?
Sure can. When installing through Active sync when it asks you if you want to install in the default location, hit "NO" and choose Storage. You can install onto an SD card as well if you want. I keep all my games on SD card, all my extra programs on Storage and only my today items (Wisbar Advance and Wisbar Advance Desktop) in Main memory. This makes sure you have plenty of free ram for multitasking.
There are heaps of threads like this floating around to help save even more of your main memory. Have a look around.

Thanks for clearing up man!
Safe's me a lot of memory
So, I was wondering if it would be better to install apps on the memory card or on main memory. In terms of stability, performance, etc
Thanks!

Yep, main memory especially if you're using the crap class 2 card that came with the phone.
I usually install games/apps that i use frequently on the phones main memory. All other games/app, I install it to the storage card. It is stable for me and also leaves space on the phone for other things.
I agree with halojinx. I try to keep my device memory as empty as possible. I throw the large files on the storage card and create shortcuts to them with quicklinks. That way my phone runs quicker. Works for me. : /
Since we have such a big system memory, I have no idea what would drive you guys to move your apps to your SD card.
I know I keep all my .cab files on my SD card, but all my installations go to the system memory.
I have 8gb class 6 micro SD, but the 16gb holds so much more music and video files, I don't really use the 8gb anymore.

I agree with you. We have more than enough memory to install a huge amount of apps in the main memory.
Installing it to the main memory won't take up your RAM space for apps to run.
Main memory will use less of your battery also and will not cause your HD2 to freeze because of the generic card that came with the unit.
Yes, there's a metric crapload of on-board memory for apps on the HD2...I think it's a much better policy to install all apps to the phone's memory, and just store the cabs themselves on the storage card. I also believe that installing apps (and all their related minute little files) to the SD card can cause device lag in general when the phone is trying to index the card.

Sweet. I was thinking "oh, when I flash I won't need to reinstall the apps if they're on the SD card!" Well I was still installing them after I flash, so I figured I may as well just start installing them to main memory.
Yeah, the crap Class 2 SD card makes me nervous. Once I have the $50, I'll go buy me a nice Class 6
Thanks!
so I read that it has 710mb of rom for app storage, so can you not store apps on the 8 gigs (6.5)of internal mem?

Currently, you cannot store apps on the 6+ gig partition of the internal memory.
However, when you think about it, the 748MB allocated as internal storage, for apps, is already more total application storage than what most people allocate for themselves when using apps2sd on a rooted phone. For example, if you read some ROM threads, you should find reference to a suggested 512MB partition on SD card for apps2sd and the likelihood of never filling it up. So, even without root and apps2sd we have more apps storage than pretty much everyone else.
Aside from plain old app storage though, I am very curious to see what developers can do with these partitions and all that internal memory once root is achieved.
Well the good thing nowadays is that alot of developers store files on your sd card also, so you save alot of your app space. I've installed every app that i wanted (I've downloaded over 60) and i have 633mb left
plus most apps don't take much space anyways, alot are under a 1mb
I just heard that the evo has 1gig of storage, which is awesome, but I hate sprint and want to convince myself that the Incredible is a better phone.
so if you have an sd, and download something, does it go to internal or sd?
and when you plug in your phone to your pc, does it show two seperate hard drives(sd and internal)?

When you download something, by default it saves to your SD. I haven't found a setting to change that. However, you can move the files to your internal storage after you've finished downloading using Astro File Manager. The downside to all this right now is that all third party apps can only read from the SD card. So if you have music and you want to play them using a third party app, then you'll have to store them on the SD.

Then whats the point of having that much internal storage?

Things change. It'll be more use later this year. While DI is the first Android set to have internal memory, it won't be the last.

For pictures/music/videos to be used with stock media apps. I know, it's lame as of right now. Hopefully soon more app developers will create apps that will allow the incredible to access internal storage.
Hey guys,
Recent iOS convert and still figuring out a lot about my atrix and android in general.
Would someone be willing to give me a rundown on how media and apps are stored?
Specifically, where are Market and non market apps stored on the atrix? Can I control the download location through settings?
The same for music and video? I've been dragging and dropping media to intetnal storage but it appears on my 8 gig SD?
Same goes for beyondpod. Can't figure out the storage path.
A little confused.
Thanks for the help. This is a heck of a community!

First, the "sdcard" is your internal storage. An actual sdcard will be referred to as external or sdcardext, or something like that. You can place music and pics pretty much on either one and the music player and gallery will find it. As for apps, you can download them and most will end up in non-accessible internal memory but you can go to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications and select the app and you might or might not have a choice to move to "Phone" or "media Area". The media area will be the external card.
Live is correct, you can put anything on either SD or ExtSD and it will be found. As for the apps they download to /system/apps in the Internal phone storage, unless you do the above and move them to the SD card. To be honest though you've got a ton of storage on the internal phone storage for apps so unless you have like 500+ apps it won't be an issue. As far as how the internal SD is organized basically the Internal phone storage and internal SD are the same thing, the internal phone storage is just partitioned off to be used for the OS and app storage and you see the remainder as usable SD internal storage.
Thanks for the information guys, much appreciated.
I heard a few days back about being able to move apps onto the sd card but has anyone been able to confirm whether or not app data from moved apps will be stored in the SD card or the phone?
Haven't been lucky enough to get my pre order yet but thank you for the answer.
Ooh, and am wondering are the unstable remounting/unmounting of SD cards just restricted to a few devices or are a more widespread problem due to architecture, if anyone knows :S

I would like to know the same thing.
I'm not sure why all of a sudden this is news. Are there just a lot of people new to Android? Back when expandable storage was still popular on Android devices you could always do this, albeit there were some restrictions on which app can be moved. It also depended on the developer of the app to make some of the data move to SD. If you're new, the actual app stays on the phone in a partition you can't access unless you have root access. All the other data that would be stored on the phones internal storage (and could be accessible to users) could be moved to SD card.
I also find people complaining about adoptable storage ridiculous.

Right, I am an android user; I am just new to using SD card on android (on an old moto x). Just to clear things up, the question would by no means be related to the adoptable storage media coverage which I too, find pointless. I am simply trying to gauge the size of the SD card I am going to purchase as well as getting a general idea of how conscious I would have to be with my 20ish GB of internal storage when downloading apps with the phone.
EDIT: Ah, okok, it is easier now to just research the SD card app data storage for each individual app that I'm concerned about. Thanks!
Anyways, as a newbie, taking from your post above, when moving the app to SD card, the actual app itself (download size) would stay in a partition in internal storage and, depending on the individual apps, some information would be migrated to SD and some data wouldn't? So it is probable that apps such as Spotify and Amazon Video would store any offline media files in internal storage regardless of moving to SD card, to prevent potential access by users?
Thanks!
Which sd card would be the best for this phone?
