I want to buy a phone that can do widescreen photography with a minimal budget and the xperia neo seems to fit best. Xperia ray has too small a screen for my liking so thats not an option.
Anyways researching the xperia neo I have encountered one big problem, it seems it's display is quite reflective and not as good as the xperia arc outdoors?? Can anyone please confirm if this is the case?
Bad performance outdoors is a complete deal breaker for me. However I have used xperia arc and I found it's display to have excellent outdoor performance. I assumed the xperia neo would be the same but seems like it isnt from the reviews.
One reviewer noted that it's screen is recessed unlike the arc which brings more reflectivity.
Don't know about the screens but I'd say get the Arc if the budget allows it.
Bigger screen, looks better and has more devs like (not 100% sure about devs).

It cracks.
I cant take chances because we dont have any SE service centers here, we get no warranty so if my arc cracks then I'll just have to live with it.
Plus there are a couple of other issues I have with the arc. I want a phone with a camera button and the one on the arc I find as good as not having one at all. Secondly the placement of the sensor at the back is going to cause some trouble as well. The neo has perfect placement and what seems like a fairly comfortable camera button.
Plus it's also noticeably cheaper so I wont be paying the same money for a smaller screen.
Then get the Neo if you find it so much better

If you want camera then BUY camera...if you want phone..then buy phone. Trust me...you don't get 2in1 good phone and camera together

I have both, and both have their advantages and problems.
Arc:
+ Display is much better both in colors (warmer, everything looks quite cold on the Neo)
+ Display has more brightness and better in hard sunlight
- Camera position is annoying from time to time
- Shutter key is hard to press
Neo:
+ Better shutter key
+ Better camera placement
- Display has colder tones
- Display not as bright or legible in sunlight
The difference is small, but I think I'd prefer the Neo as a cameraphone simply because of the better camera placement and shutter button.

Use the disable auto brightness app from the market, or flash MIUI, and the Neo's display will become very bright too.
I agree with your last point. I've had phones with a corner placed camera before, and the lens is much easier to cover. (Only when holding it with two hands in landscape though).

The deal breaker for me more than anything are the cracks, the price difference isnt huge.

Shouldnt the auto brightness make it go maximum bright under sunlight? Or does the auto brightness puts a cap on maximum brightness as well?
Whats the latest version for the neo? With the neo V the automatic brightness is disabled at 100% brightness, is that feature not available on the neo?

I realise phone camera shortcomings and I do have a fairly good sony cybershot camera but I really cant be bothered to carry it around everywhere and thus many a times I am in a situation where I have no camera and a crappy phone.
I wont be rooting my phone, I am not that sort of a power user. I know for sure the neo V disables auto brightness at 100% and has a really bright screen. It would totally suck if sony hasnt brought this feature to the neo, I mean it's a software thing afterall so it cant be a problem for them can it.
Neo and Neo V are identical aside the camera sensor. If you put the brightness on the Neo on 100% it'll just use the maximum brightness at all times.

Auto brightness is indeed disabled when brightness is at 100%, but if you install the disable auto brighness app, the brightness seems like 2 times as high when you set it at 100%. So yes, the brightness is limited without the auto brightness app.
I feel no problems with shutter key on my Arc S.

Now isnt that just stupid sony ericsson.
The display test of xperia neo on gsmarena reveals a 100% brightness of 513nits which is quite remarkable. How come other websites were saying that the display is dim? What gives this is so confusing.
The neo has a contrast of above 1500 at gsmarena review, thats pretty unbelievable surely they have got something wrong?
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_xperia_neo-review-595p2.php
Btw can you tell me how reflective the display is regardless of brightness?
I think I might have figured this out. In the xperia arc review at gsmarena they show a max brightness of just 134 for xperia neo. They hadnt yet reviewed the neo. One month later they give a full review to neo and it's max brightness is off the roof.
Was there some software problem that was later fixed? Maybe most of the reviews talking about poor sunlight performance had the version which was seriously crippled with brightness?
I use the widgetsoid widget to control the brightness (AUTO) on my ARC and it works really well.
As for the cracks - had my phone for over 4 months and not a single crack at all.
Have found the camera very good in good light and ok in poorer light. Yes the button is tricky so I use the 'touch' screen option.
Only downside (from any camera phone) is that there isn't any optical zoom but there is nothing you can do about it.
Hope this helps!
I am totally buying the neo if it's display is actually what it seems like at gsmarena.
0.31 black with 513 brightness, no other non sony phone can do this with an LCD.
I need more xperia neo owners to comment please and especially those who have used both arc and neo.
Nevermind I bumped into this thread and it seems like gsmarena got some magical units and most other people dont experience such brightness levels.

Thanks guys, I dont think I'll be getting the neo.
For the test, I used some professional light measuring equipment (my DSLR).
I captured an image at F/2.8, ISO 400, at 0 EV. Maxed out brightness on the Note 2, with Auto adjust screen tone off (important). I used a completely white picture shot at the same distance.
Before update:
Shutter speed 1/125s
After update:
Shutter speed 1/500s!
That is exactly 2 full stops. Or 4 times the original brightness.
Now, 400% sounds like a lot, like it would blind you. I don't want to create an over-expectation. It's seems adequately bright in a well lit room, where previously in that same room, the phone maybe seemed kinda dim.
I previously posted when I first got my original Galaxy Note II, that I was a little disappointed because people kept saying it is the brightest screen they ever had, and mine was far from that. But maybe those people saying that had something like this originally, but I just got it now. And it is beautiful.

Camera is just fine. It is a precision instrument and I have definitive proof with 2 JPG and CR2 files with EXIF information. But maybe the Korean Note 2 was configured to be dimmer than the Note 2 that you have.
Funny thing is iPhone 5 was just released this week, and that screen is cranked up to super bright when put next to the Note 2. It is a shocking comparison, but now the Note 2 can hold it's own. But maybe they didn't want the negative press and decided to enable the brighter mode for the Korean customers as well.
If your thought your screen was never that dim in bright settings, maybe it will not impact your screen at all. On the other hand, if you were disappointed with the screen's brightness bright rooms or show rooms, then you may be very surprised when the update is applied. No promises. I heard through the grapevine from another XDA member I should expect a big boost in brightness, and I did want to confirm it so I prepared my camera to do testing before I hit update, and after. The improvement has exceeded my expectations.

are you sure u shot the photos in the same conditions ? same lightning / sun in the room? totall darkness room ?
but if its 400% brighter you should see difference by ur bare eyes.
4.1.1 to 4.1.2 made no difference in brightness here.
the only thing i seems to notice is that my screen has become sharper. since 4.1.2
also making pictures with the phones cam has improved 200% in dark places also the flash timing and photo taking has improved. i noticed

Yes, I did it in a controlled lighted environment. It was a scientific test. I understand light, and how to measure it very accurately because of my years studying photography.
With that said, my model is a Korean SHV-E250L Galaxy Note 2. I got it OTA from my carrier yesterday. The maximum brightness when I got the phone, originally was not as bright as I had hoped. And I just didn't understand how people were saying it was the brightest screen they had. I thought it was just some fake reviews of people trying to promote their haphazardly written reviews that was written with rumors than actual time with the device.
But now I know that some people got really bright Note 2's out of the box, and some didn't. I'm just hoping that people who wished that their Note 2 was a lot brighter, because they think it is dim, may experience the same effect with an update when it arrives.

Here are the JPEG and CR2's. These pics are not glamour product shots. They are for the purposes of measurements off a highly calibrated light measuring device. You have to look at the EXIF information. The whole point is to take the same picture with the same level of brightness, by only exposing the sensor to 1/4 of the original open shutter time. The shutter speed indicates change in brightness because trying to evaluate a picture being brighter with people's eyes is always subjective.
Here's additional test information.
Camera: Canon 20D
Lens: Canon 60mm Macro F2.8
Light Metering: Center Weighed
ISO: 400
F-stop: F/2.8
0 EV
Phone settings:
100% Brightness
Auto Brightness off
Auto adjust screen tone off
Model: SHV-E250L
The Test:
Before update:
Shutter speed 1/125s - 1/160s
After update:
Shutter speed 1/500s - 1/640s
If you know a bit of photography, you will see that it was a good test with all the right settings. It was done in a room with a very dim controlled light source. It would be impossible to do a test like this with a point & shoot.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/520h0j18tqni5l4/brightnesschange.zip
Again, sounds like not everyone will get this boost, but some people have gotten it. Some people didn't. I just wanted some concrete numbers, hearing that I may notice this. I wanted more definite proof than say something like "yeah, it definitely kinda seems brighter."
So I did this right before and after the update. And I'm glad I did because even with these concrete numbers, people seem to not believe. I can only provide the facts for my device.
I have also noticed higher brightness. Now my eyes becomes tired faster than before

If it would be 400% brighter then it would exceed at least 800 candela, making it brighter than even the most powerful LCD screens by quite the margin.
Sorry but somebody clearly DOESN'T understand light. Deducting brightness from a camera's shutter speed is failure at logic because they are not directly correlated. The camera can have a logarithmic response to light output in the shutter response.
The scientific method is to use a photometer and nothing else.
Let's try to figure this out.
Gsm arena puts Galaxy Note II at 402cm/2, they put iPhone 5 at 640cm/2.
So these are the possible scenarios:
1. Your Note II is now brighter than iPhone 5.
2. Before the update, your Note II model was dimmer than all others and now it's comparable.
3. You really have no idea what you are talking about.
So what we need is a comparison with iPhone and other Notes!
I myself just flashed a 4.1.2 Rom with matching kernel I did not notice any brightness difference.
I also studied the kernel source for your model "update 1", there were some differences in values for the display driver. But I'm not 100% what they do.

This is for owners only, if you don't have a Z dont rate it.
So guys, since a lot of people have received their Xperia Z, rate your Z

2- Average
3 -Good
4- Very Good
5- Excellent
Also justify your rating. You can add a mini review too. :good:
P.S. I have not included a poll as then all the trolls would vote which will make no sense.

I'd rate mine excellent.
Its fast, slightly laggier than my Nexus 4, has better volume in headphones and better music quality too, camera is hit and miss but has the potential to be better than sgs3 camera. Speaker and ear piece could be clearer and louder, screen is not as good as Nexus 4 but is very crisp, just not as bright and a little more washed out. The Brava engine makes things a little too dark and too blue for my liking but I can live with it.
Overal an update to improve camera performance and possibly to add screen adjustments would be a welcome addition but overall I'm happier with it.than my Nexus. Now to compare it with One when that comes out as the one will.have much better speakers, a better screen and seems to have a much better design.

aha okay that's something different than sharp yup coming from amoled every thing looks washed out, but Amoled has unnatural colors, so I think in some days, if you still use the z, you will come to appreciate the more natural color reproduction , your eyes have to get used to it.
5. Or perhaps 4.5 as the battery isn't the best, so rating it full marks would be a little unjust. But everything else is all I want in a phone. Zero complaints so far, only bags of joy!
So far I rate it 4.5. Not getting any lag, any of the battery drain issues some are reporting and screen colours more than adequate. Speaker position is arse but sound is okay for my use.
Just upgraded from an S2 and not missing it at all. Will be happier still when root without unlocked bootloader is achieved.
Had the phone since Friday morning, 3 out of 5 for me.
Good point:
Good camera, went to London zoo on Sunday. Took over 300 pictures with different settings and light conditions. Pictures are very good for a phone even with digital zoom.
Battery life is good on par with high end smartphones.
Example:
Left the house at 10:30,
In zoo between 11:30 to 18:00, taken over 300 pictures.
Using GPS for 30 mins navigate to restaurant on public transport while sorting photos during the journey.
Battery around 30% left in restaurant.
Sorting photos on the way home on the underground for 50mins.
Battery almost dead at home around 11pm.
Battery had 2 full cycles before visiting the zoo. Customized stamina and low battery mod was on. Brightness was on auto with max 75% using Lux.
Bad point:
Take away 1 point for the washed out screen.
No matter if it bothers users or not. The viewing angle is not good enough for a 2013 flagship device from a major company.
Take 0.5 point for build quality.
There is a small gap on the left hand side of the phone around nail width that is not present on the right hand side.
Normally this could be fine, but not for a water resistant phone (thinking send it back).
Speaker volume is too low to hear out and about.
WIFI is slow, around 10mpbs down, other devices between 22 to 30mbps down.
software -0.5 point:
There is no clear all apps in the multi task menu, which makes clear all apps very tedious.
No notification LED with stamina mode (can't wast that much battery)

First of all I am not a troll and certainly not a samsung one as samsung are crap end of that! For me the only real manufacturers of phones are HTC & SONY but that doesn't mean I am biased to those OEMs because If they do something stupid or make what I feel are wrong moves or no improvements then I am going to critisize it.
I haven't got an xperia z (my friend does though) but was going to get one until I saw the HTC one. I have had a chance to use the phone for a pre longed period of time
I would say maybe a 3.5 - 4
Plus sides:
Design/look
screen
Audio is good and loud enough, especially with beats solo or over head headphones.
camera is very good but does sometimes have a pinkish hue on things that are red
video audio is good
the UI and keyboard
internet speed
call quality/loudness is good
phone is generally smooth
able to take pics or record video or both, watch videos + take screen shots all when in a phone call (only other phones that can do this are HTC phones)
Minus sides:
while far better than xperia s/t after playing with it for a while it lacks the wow, that i gained when i first played with it
the edges are sharp
Some phones aswell have gaps between the screen and edge of the phone.
loud speaker is good only in quiet environments
videos can loose sharpness at times and I don't mean in low light I mean in the daytime and colours a bit off sometimes.
battery life isn't as good as I thought it was going to be (wasn't expecting anything note 2 like here, which would be stupid)
camera auto focus even in superior auto mode still has that nagging slow focusing at times
Overall it is a very good phone but not one I feel that is worth £500 or £500+.
Infact I don't think I have played with or had any phone that is worth over £400. Also if the rumours about the C670x are to be true and coming out in july, I feel that is a proper kick in the teeth for those who have actually just bought the phone for £500 or £500 plus because imo it means SONY feel that the xperia z isn't the best they could of offered to customers.
Also if this new phone does have a s600 processor, seeing as the HTC One has the same processor and is due out next week, sony could have delayed the Z a little an used a s600 processor.
Guys wait like 2 or 3 weeks to say battery life is bad.. It was the same with XS amd XU, battery life was bad first 2 - 3 weeks.
And the screen is sharp for me and everyone I know, so I don't really get the point of washed out. Colors may be different and viewing angle is not the best, but I don't think you can say it isn't sharp when just looking directly at it.
And one thing I'll probably never understand is why people complain about viewing angles lately, a phone is to be used by looking straight at the screen as far as I know. I really don't get it why one would look from an angle of even 50 or 60 degrees towards your phone.
I'd rate it 4/5
Good development support from Sony and I know some good stuff is coming with the 4.2.2 update

For one thing, we like to compare our phone to other high end smartphones. So compared to other LCD phones such as iPhone, HTC One, and Nexus 4, the Z have the worst viewing angle.
For another, the screen start to wash out around 30 degrees. A 5 inch screen is big enough to be viewed by more than one person. For example, two people sitting next to each other and view photos on the phone will not see the exact same image as I found out yesterday.
The fact is the screen viewing angle is on a level of mid range phone and worse than other high end phones, which will be noticed by majority of users.

aha okay that's something different than sharp yup coming from amoled every thing looks washed out, but Amoled has unnatural colors, so I think in some days, if you still use the z, you will come to appreciate the more natural color reproduction , your eyes have to get used to it.

Exactly, I feel that people are spoiled with amoled colors thinking they look good but do not consider the fact that they are unnatural colors and are way oversaturated.
I rate my XZ a 5 - Excellent!
Coming from the Galaxy Note N7000 this phone is a bit smaller but that's not a bad thing.
I'm also coming from an AMOLED screen but you don't hear my bichin about it. The people who are complaining should try doing these things themselves I bet they talk different then.
In the end you won't use the phone your whole life, every few years or so you will switch to another phone, so it doesn't really matter if the phone isn't perfect. Your live isn't perfect never will be, the same goes for the phones, there will always be something to "cry" about.
This is all over the internet, when the note 3 brightness is set on auto brightness it reaches very high levels of brightness which u cant reach if set manually to the maximum.. am I right ? Anyone owning the two devices tested this and found the same results?? And how is the whites on the note 3 in general compared to the lg g2..?

I think the LG G2 display is great. Max brightness is pretty bright, I can't see why anyone would want it even brighter. Auto brightness levels are a pain, but that can easily be fixed by using Lux to manage it. If you measure quality in brightness alone, you may be better off buying a flashlight.

Even if it was brighter, tell me that again after 4-5 months. When the oled will lose a very significant amount of its brightness...and will probably have a very nasty burn in,that will stay there forever for the used to see lol

That is absolutely right!!!
AMOLEDS hate full brightness and full, direct UV light exposure!!! (Sun, office lamps, tanning beds, etc) LOL
IPS all the way for me!!!
Cheers!
I have both the Note 3 and the G2. The Note 3 does indeed get brighter at maximum brightness, it actually becomes painful on the eyes because of the contrast ratio of the AMOLED screen. It's so bright it hurts to look at it in the dark. The IPS screen on the G2 is much more pleasant to look at in my opinion, that's one of the reason I use it as my daily phone.

My wife has a g2 while I have the note 3. The note 3 goes into a extra brightness mode in direct sunlight and is clearly more visible than the g2 outside in direct sunlight. This mode only occurs in direct sunlight on auto brightness and can not be turned up that high manually.
While the g2 screen is nice, I do notice that the viewing angles are not as good and the scree don't seem as crisp and clear as my note. Still a great screen

Well thanks all, this means the note at first is better specially under direct sunlight or so but it has the burn in issue and so on, so I guess I'll stick with the g2 then
I only asked this question because I feel that blacks are much more pleasant to look at on the note than the grey blacks on the g2

The burn in shouldn't be an issue. Only phones u will see burn in on are display units ramped up to full brightness and stuck on the home screen for hours and hours.
I had a galaxy s3 for almost 2 years and it had no burn in and the screen was still bright. Oled has come a long way since the first amoled screens.
People say the same thing about plasma but plasma has a superior picture vs lcd...my plasma in my bedroom is 3 years old and stays on sportscenter and I have no burn in

Big fat no. Put them side by side and judge for yourself. I did when i bought this phone and saw the difference for myself.
Note 3 is bigger yes but not better...

All of my last devices have been amoled until the g2. Had burn in issues on 2 galaxy fascinates, and blotchy low-light darks on 3 droid razrs. And yes, amoleds do degrade in color/contrast over time. Not a big deal if you swap out or jump up devices frequently, but if you go the contract term it gets noticeable.
What swung me back to LCD was the purchase of a nexus 10 over the summer. The HD LCD blew me away & convinced me of how far this technology has come.

i have no problem at all viewing my g2 screen in direct sunlight on 100% brightness... the g2s screen is alot better in my opinion i just wish the blacks were alittle darker
My roomate has the Note 3. I made him sit with me and do a bunch of browsing battles and gaming/app opening challenges. Throughout these "competetive" tests I notices that the Note 3 does definetly have a brighter state on auto and max brightness, but I found that my G2 had a clearer, brighter minimum brightness (which is what I always leave Marge on). Yes my G2's name is marge. But that Amoled screen is just a contrast machine and I think that helps elude to the brighter screen we see, since it's blacks are so deep. But as for an overall screen? G2 all the way. Edge to edge, excellent viewing angles for what I need and amazing color reproduction that the Note 3 couldn't quite match. Hope this helps anyone!
Hi,
I'm in process of buying Galaxy S5 but have one question to be answered. I've read some mixed reviews regarding the display performance and color representation of the S5 and I couldn't decide who to believe. I've read that cinema mode is the most accurate but also seen some reviews that it isn't as good either. A one of the most recent article on PhoneArena about displays also added to my fears regarding S5 display.
I want to ask from S5 users that is it really the case, does it really noticeable while viewing videos/images or playing games etc. How does cinema mode competes with M8, Z2 etc.
Phonearena have done quite a few blunders recently in their reviews, I don't trust them.
I'd rather go for AnandTech and DisplayMate test results. They have given the S5 very high marks.

Thanks for your reply. As you are using S5 can you please tell me your personal experience with display.
I recently changed from a S3 to S5 (G900F). The colors are much more natural than S3's, the screen is a lot brighter and the quality is awesome. It has extremely deep black so deep that you can't distinguish if the screen is off or on! Even in a dark room. The brightness helps when you are outdoors. I live in Macedonia, Greece and here in Greece we have a lot of sunshine through the year, especially now I find it easier to use under sunlight than the S3. Also the white is very good.
So, to sum up:
-Natural colors
-Deep black
-Very bright when you need it.
-Battery savings thanks to amoled technology.
I recommend that you use the phone in person before buying it, from a friend or at a store. This is my personal experience so don't take it for granted. You may end up with different results from me when you use it because everyone has different needs/expectations.

I really like it but I use it on Cinema mode all the time. I can't stand oversaturation coming from a Nexus 5.
So, would you guys suggest that Cinema Mode is the way to go for everyday use?

Quite a bit, it's not bad at all.
Cinema mode is the Most natural But is stile Not perfect. With root could be possible To chance color value in The Files with The screen configurations? Chance The code strings. Because it is only a setting like The TV setting preset... But on a TV we Can set manually contrast gamma saturation ecc.. It would be interesting To find Files in The Phone that contains The sets of The screen And Try To change......
