Not sure if there is a way to change this but the same thing happens on both my and my wife's G1. If I get an email to my gmail account I get the notification like I'm supposed to, but only the initial email from any given mail chain gives me a notification. If I reply to it, and they reply back again I receive no notification.
I've checked the settings and I see no way to change this. Am I missing something or is there nothing I can do about it?
Are you coming all the way out of them mail when you have read it, (pressing the back button till at homescreen)???
Additionally what ROM are you using is it stock or modded??
I've stopped using the default GMail app the moment I discovered K9 Mail.

I tried K9, set it up with my gmail addy but got no notification at all when I sent an email to my address to test it out.
Does K9 not give notifications?

Hmm, I must have missed something. I'll check it out again.
I have the same problem, after I've had my first notification I dont get anymore until I've cleared the top bar notification. I would like a way to get a notification with every email even if I've not cleared the last one.
I've switched to the HTC exchange app which does notify you with every email however I dont really like that mail as much as the gmail one.
Can anyone help?

v05 - v06
Internal Code Enhancements
v04
MotoBlur Email Support
v03
HTC Sense Support
Stock Android Email Support
[=--- Original Post ---=]
Hey Everyone,
I'm about to release this into the Market, but wanted some preliminary input. I've noticed a lot of people in forums requesting a 1x1 unread e-mail widget for those running HTC Sense and the included mail application. I've completed a widget that does this, though unfortunately it requires Root because it must open some of the HTC Sense databases. It shows a compiled total of all unread mail in all inboxes. When clicked, it opens the HTC Mail reader to it's last state.
[[ To be clear, this works with ALL E-mail accounts, Exchange, POP, IMAP, etc. Not just GMail like many of the other widgets out there now. ]]
I was originally planning to make the widget support a single inbox at a time, so you could run a different instance of the widget with a different icon for each of your mail accounts, but after going through the HTC dex files, I'm not sure how I could have it call up a specific mail account when clicked on.
Also, I've yet to determine how HTC signals their own widget to update the counts. Until I figure that out, it currently updates whenever the screen is turned on.
Thoughts, input, suggestions?
Thanks.
I've actually created a version to work with the stock email reader as well.
I currently have an "Gmail Unread Count" or something widget on Sense which does exactly this, very customizable (choose what icon etc) and I don't have root access.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this only grabs the "Gmail" unread counts, not other accounts you're syncing through the phone, right?

Mind if I test it ?
I would be interested in this too.
Any chance you could also add an option to only make it count unread mail for a certain label. And then have multiple instances of the widget so it's easy to monitor said labels.
Would happily test and pay for it as it is a feature many people have been yearning for.

Testing shouldn't be necessary, I've got a few different phones I'm trying it out on. I'll throw it up in the market soon, and put a post here when it's there.

that qould be great. I'm also very interested in this widget
Will this be available on additional launchers instead of just Sense? I am using an Evo but have Launcher Pro as my default home. I do miss the count on the Sense widget, but not enough to switch back.

Does Launcher Pro have it's own email client? This Widget is based specifically on the client. For instance, I'm running Sense, but have installed the stock vanilla 2.2 email client through an APK. I then run the Vanilla version of the widget for the stock email client, OR I can run the Sense version for the HTC client.
Thanks.

Also very interested in this. Have found that Androids lack of good email widgets and apps to be very disappointing. Gmail Unread Count is good but is very tempremental about how many accounts it can handle. Cuurentlt I'm rocking 3 Gmail accounts & a MS Exchange account. This app would be greatly appreciated

How do you have them all set up? 1 in the Gmail app, 2 in IMAP? All in one? etc. I may want you to do a test run for me before I release if you don't mind, as that's a pretty extreme case.
Thanks!

Yeah.
Gmail Unread App - use this for my main personal Gmail account
HTC Stock Email App - use this for the other 2 Gmail accounts (1 business / 1 forums/eBay) + my current MS Exchange account
It's cumbersome to say the least. The HTC Stock Email app is okay but to be honest it's slow, not very user-friendly & looks crap. I thought I might be able to split the accounts easily with Gmail Unread app but I find that really is very difficult to add an 2nd account not to mind a 3rd. Sometimes it'll work but more often than not - it won't.

Unfortunately root is required for this widget to read HTC's mail database. If you're willing to root, I haven't had a Sense 2.1 tester yet.
Thanks.
I just wanted to give everyone an update since it's been a while (I was traveling last week, and will be again next week). I'm applying for the Market and adding in code for Licensing and Versioning now. The widget will be released very soon after that, and has been renamed 1x1 Ultimate Unread Widget. I will post again with a market link when it's out.
If there are any other mail readers people would like added for phase 2, such as K9, or any other features, such as icon switching, or changing the update frequency, let me know. The more requests (public, no PM please) for an item, the higher I will place it in the list.
Thanks again for the interest.
I actually prefer to use the email app. Problem is, the email app doesn't seem to download updates until I open it (even with it on ignore in Task MGR). Email app set to download every 10 mins. The Gmail app, however, seems to auto download updates.
Any seen or know of a solution?

The Gmail app supports push notifications, which means as soon as you get an email, you'll get it on your phone. But with the email app, it resorts to polling (checking for new messages every 10 minutes) so it refreshes only when you open it
Lucky you, but my gmail app doesn't do anything. I feel that its always off since I don't get any email notification on ie.
Makes sense. I just like the look of the email app better, but I guess u need to stick with gmail for the push ability.

Go to Settings in the Gmail app and make sure that Email Notifications is checked. That's the whole point of using Gmail compared to Hotmail/Yahoo.. (atleast for now)
It annoys me how you can't select multiples in th stock app. I use K9, it has colours (including led flash) for each account, push, and most importantly, multiple select.

What about in Settings/Data Sync - I think you need Google Sync, and then Google Mail Sync selected too.
settings ---> data synchronization ---> synchronize with Gmail
right, I forgot to check that back after the 100th times of rooting.

With push email, new messages appear in your inbox as soon as they arrive. You'll always be up to the moment.

my SGS always get the emails faster than Gmail itself
many times i see my SGS pop up an alert about new email, and me being logged into Gmail cloud on the browser don't see the email until a few manual refreshes after
also got thunderbird on IMAP4, so it should show up immediately, but SGS is always the first to pop up with the alert whenever i get a new email first

Guys push email in SGS only works with gmail or exchange accounts. For other email service providers such as yahoo or hotmail, you need to use the samsung social hub app. Which I don't really like btw.
Please correct me if I'm wrong

yeah. gmail app pushes email to your phone. The default email app doesn't I don't think, I haven't gotten it working. But samsung apps have released a new app that's called Samsung Email (you can download through samsung apps) it pushes email for gmail, hotmail, yahoo, pretty much the big email providers.
hope that helps.

Yeah Samsung call it 'Social Hub' as mentioned earlier, i posted the apk in an earlier thread here:

It works really well, it makes any 'normal' email push email. Two things that let it down for me are, you are unable to select multiple emails (no check boxes) and you are unable to select your own alert tone.

it uses the system selected alert tone
so, yeah, there is no individual contact specific alert tone, but it is possible to select account specific alert tone
say if you have 5 or more different email accounts, each one can have its own ring tone... but i think that is because i installed some 3rd party add-ons to get that functionality, forgot which (rindroid?, ringalert?, handsend sms?, some other players?)
I installed that samsung email app and it is mzch better than stock one.. Much faster and that app makes galaxy s much better phone and fixes its big disadvantage. Thanks for the app..

Got my new Galaxy S4. What is up with the email app? are you able to have it push email? i dont want it to poll every 5 minutes, i need my emails instantly...
I turned on sync in the email app, which apparently this is not push, anyways, throughout the day when i open the email app i get a popup saying email sync disabled. Why?
Can anyone confirm that the search function works?? I have my email set up as an imap account, whenever i want to search something in my email i get 0 results, and if i hit the search on server, it does not bring up anything either. This happens with all my email accounts on my phone, and my wife's accounts on her GS4. Any idea why??
I have a rooted S4, not using a custom rom. I have tried K9 email but it is just plain ugly. I actually like how the stock email app looks but nothing works!
I searched all over the internet and i dont see anything on most of these issues so im assuming im doing something wrong if nobody else is talking about this. Please, any help would be awesome. My wife wants her iphone back because of this.
I use the stock email app with no issues. I have it set to recieve from my work exchange account, my outlook and gmail accounts. All are push, and all of mine are searchable with no issues.
You may try erasing the account, and then resetting it. I know my outlook account is also an exchange server, but the gmail I think is IMAP. All mine have the check box "sync email" checked, and I set all to push notifications. Be sure you are setting up the account in the email app itself, that may help.

Where do you see the email push setting? only see sync, and whenever i turn on sync, i get a popup a few hours later when i open the app that sync has been disabled. Even when i enable sync, it gives me the option for sync schedule for at most every 15 minutes.
As far as the search, i use godaddy imap and yahoo. I cant search anything out of what is showing when i open the app. It shows me default of i think 25 emails when i open the app and if i scroll to the bottom it starts to load more. When i do a search, it only searches through what is loaded and when i do continue searching on server i get nothing more. The only results is what is in the 25 loaded messages, or 50 messages if i scroll down at let it load more...

The email app on the iphone is far better than the stock email app on the SGS4. I think the stock email app on the SGS4 is utter crap, at least with IMAP. Maybe it works better with exchange. I use Kaiten, which is an upgraded/updated version of K9. Another one that I looked at briefly was AquaMail.

The thing is i actually really like the email app on the GS4. I think the layout is nice and the email app is one of the few times i actually feel that the air view feature is really useful. The problem is, is that it is not reliable. I need my emails instantly and the email app is not getting it for me. I just figured out the search problem i was having. If i just change in the settings messages to load from 25 to "total" all of my messages will be there and search is fine. I still wish there is a way to have my emails come instantly rather than every 15 minutes. Aside from the push issue, what else do you dislike about the stock app that the other apps have? The only thing i noticed on the iphone is the push option...

Four major issues are (and there are other minor issues):
- Lack of IMAP IDLE (push)
- When you reply to someones message, the text in their message is reformatted in your reply (font changes and line spacing changes). Looks unprofessional for work email.
- html hyperlinks are sometimes not properly parsed and are unclickable. I get a news service hyperlinks to articles. None of the hyperlinks work on the stock email client. I have to forward the message to gmail or something to click on the hyperlinks.
- emails sent from stock email client do not sync properly and have a different format on my outlook client.
Kaiten has none of these problems. These are not problems with the iphone app either.

plus, to update on the syncing being disabled. I set the sync to on, reboot my phone, opened the mail app and i get the pop up that says sync disabled. I open the settings and the sync option is no longer checked.
Just tried Kaiten...It was downloading so many copies of my emails. It showed each email at least 4 times...uninstalled...
They are correct, the one I looked at was my Outlook.com email address, and my work address. The gmail address shows the same thing as yours.
I guess the news hasn't gotten around fully. Gmail accounts to do not support push with anything other than the native stock android gmail app anymore (since, when exactly, I don't remember. March or April of this year?). In that particular case, it's not the fault of the Samsung email app. No other app besides the official "gmail" app will receive emails by push from a gmail account, and that includes any email applications on any other system from iphone to any other operating system. Blame gmail.
The only thing I miss by using the stock email app is that I can't get it to come up in the combined inbox by default...I have to select it each time which is a bummer.
