Am I having data dropout issues? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I was at work and when I woke up my device, and tried to refresh my mailbox I noticed the 4gLte symbol wasnt there and then it said no data connection. A second later it came back? Is this Lg's power management? Or maybe my signal at work was bad atm. Should this concern me?

If it doesnt happen all the time, then I wouldnt worry. Your device was probably running at hspa+ during sleep, when you woke it up, it seeked a new signal and associated itself with LTE signal.

I wouldn't of minded if it was at hspa+ but what alarmed me was the message "no data connection" when my email app tried to refresh my inbox. And I looked at notification bar and there was no signal icon whatsoever

[Q] Network Status Symbol?

Hi guys, does anyone know where I can find explanations of the Epic 4G network status notifications? Sprint has inconveniently left out any explanations about the status notifications in their Basics Guide.
Specifically I'm confused about the 3G network status symbol. Sometimes it shows "3G" with up and down arrows underneath, sometime it shows the letter "D" underneath, and sometimes the symbol is missing entirely when the signal strength is 5 bars! When the symbol is absent, attempts to access the web are met with a "network error."
I assume that a missing 3G symbol means I have no EVDO coverage. However, shouldn't I at least have 1xRTT access? What does the symbol for that look like?
Thanks in advance!
I've noticed that when you are in 1x coverage it still shows as 3G. If the indicator is completely missing then you won't have data at all.

Thanks! It would have been nice for them to include a chart showing what each symbol means.
Wondering if anyone know what that D symbol is i get it constantly and its so annoying. Sometimes i have full bars then bars go away, then return only to show the D symbol.
I believe it means that the 3G radio has entered the Dormant state. This means that it's not actively transmitting or receiving data, which is a good thing most of the time! It's actually quite helpful, because this can help you diagnose whether or not the radio is being used more often than necessary. For instance, if the two arrows are simply white, which means no data through, your radio could still be running at power. Only when it shows 'D' does it mean it is now in power-saving mode.

That doesn't really have anything to do with the symbol being displayed. That just means that the connection to the server was dropped - which would happen regardless of whether or not the symbol is displayed. I've had the same issue you've described happen to me, but it's also happened on other phones. This just means that the TCP connection that you've got open to the other host was lost.
In this sense, displaying the 'D' makes it even more useful, because then you can cancel the transaction and start over. Most other phones would just simply display the blank bars. The radios go dormant on *any* phone, because otherwise, your battery would last about an hour or so at the most. The Epic is nice enough to tell you the radio's state in the status icon.

Data Issues??

Occasionally I get no data connection & I have to restart the phone, does any body else have that issue?

I have that issue as well, idk why it happens but I'll add it to the list of problems for when I call to get a replacement.

That just happened to me today also. It switched from "H" to "E", then when I opened USA Today it FC-ed and the icon turned into a generic Android one like the app was on the SD card and unavailable (even though it's installed to phone) and then 5 more background apps that I didn't even know were running FC-ed (Amazon MP3, Finance, QuickOffice, something and then Facebook three times?) and the phone locked up. I was able to power off then back on, but data never came back even after waiting about 10 minutes until I powered off and on again. Quite odd.
I get the same issue where am connected to wifi and as soon as i walk away from it it doesnt connect back to the data network. I got a replacement phone coming so hopefully i dont have the same issue. Another thing is the random reboot and i get black screen a lot especially after rebooting
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I've had the issue, but each time it appears to be related to JuiceDefender not properly enabling the radio. If I shut JuiceDefender off, the connection comes back, although sometimes its just easier to airplane mode it and be done with it.
I called T-Mo about it, they said call about a week after the inital release date and see if they have a fix by then, there isnt enough information kept since it hasnt been officially released yet.
I'm having the same trouble. Are you guys on the new sim card? I popped in the new sim card and the tech told me to not use it and just save it. I noticed when I put the new sim card a notification of a new voicemail came on. I didn't have any voicemail.
Edit: I'm starting to have some serious data issues. I'll get cut off, but my phone will still show full bars and "H". I try the whole airplane thing and it still does nothing. I constantly get the "check network setting, try again or cancel". My market wont load, browser says "unable to connect." This is getting stupid. When I call T Mobile it always start working and then cuts off shorty after hanging up. I've never had this isssue before. I live in the middle of the city. Only 3G around here. Its getting annoying.
Guys I'm afraid that it might problem with the antenna placement. Holding the phone on the bottom half will drop me from 3 bars of "H" to 4 bars of "G", then it will bounce back up to 4 bars of "E". If left on a desk then it will remain at 3-4 bars of "H". I notice this especially at a place where I have low-mid signal, such as my school (reinforced concrete FTL). When I have a strong 4 bar signal, it usually won't drop all the way down to edge but I do loose a few bars. I hope a simple software issue is enough to reduce this effect. I might be being crazy paranoid but I'm definitely noticing a lower signal than on my G1.
Try holding the phone by the edges, then hold it in a normal grip and see if the signal strenght changes (Menu->settings->status->signal strength)
I just got off the phone with tmo and was told its a known issue with the network affecting about 10% of users. The issue started for me yesterday on my hd2. He also said they have people working on it. I asked if I could get my buyers remorse set back 14 more days to ensure the issue is not permanment but he said that they are no longer doing extentions. I'm sure if I get tranfered to retentions the answer would change. I hope.

Wow that's funny, my MYTOUCH does the same thing with airplane mode off/on. I also remember that the store demo g2 I played with last night had the voicemail icon in the notification bar, but when you pull the bar down, there's no option to connect and retrieve the voicemail. I found that even weirder since the phone comes preloaded with google voice.
Also experiencing the same issue here in Phoenix. Been having it since I got the phone on Monday.
I have been in an ongoing round of tech calls and will be having a follow-up with the tech who I spoke with last night... I've tried everything from APN resetting to swapping the SIM card to a total factory wipe -- nothing is changing this for me.
I *know* my neighborhood has full 3G access, but I am maxed out at 1 Mbps. (Before the factory wipe I was getting 0.35 Mbps.) If this doesn't change I may just return the phone and switch to Sprint to get the Epic 4G. I mean, I'm not getting HSPA+ coverage either way, and at least with the Samsung Galaxy S Pro I'd have a full 5-row qwerty...
>_<
Wow, this is really too bad. I was SO excited about this phone...

If this happens, try going to settings->wireless->mobile network->network operators and see if you get an "Error while searching for networks" error as I did.
Reset fixed for me too. But it makes me worry.
I'm on a brand new sim card (switched to TM from ATT). I'm having some data issues too. I talked to TM tech support and they reset my connection but that did nothing. Now they're going to their android techs to see whats up.

When I wake up my phone, it's connected to 3G, but I am on wifi.

Anyone else having this problem? I don't remember having this happen on my MT3G.
It's really eating up the battery.
I am on JI2, and I never experienced this until last night after using Odin.
you have to change the wifi sleep policy in the wifi settings. Got to settings, wireless networks, wifi, then press the menu button and select advanced.
OMG! thanks, you're a real life saver.
Sorry to bring up an old thread. I have it set to never sleep but it still does. Any ideas? Seems when the display times out, it switches off wifi.
I have wifi on all the time at home and it's set to never sleep. Sometimes I see both the wifi and 3G icons. I know my wifi signal is strong, so no idea why the phone sometimes also seems to need a 3G data connection. One example is when I test GPS at home the 3G icon will pop up briefly. Another is following a reboot. But I see other times as well, and sometimes it stays for quite a while, but eventually goes away. I wonder if perhaps some ports get blocked by my router and the phone uses 3G communication to get around it. Bit of a mystery, but I don't see any other negative symptoms.
Here is something I have experienced. This is regardless of what ROM I am on.. Stock, Bionix, whatever...
I have wifi turned on at work. Sometimes I would see wifi and 3g on at the same time.
Now today, while texting, I noticed that my Wifi connection dropped to nothing, and at that point my 3g kicked in, which I expect it to. But when my Wifi reception kicks back up again, my 3g didnt turn off. I turned off Wifi and turned it on again, and my 3g turned off.
Anyone else getting the same experience?
samnada/ELStiko, That's what I'm really seeing too as I thought my wifi was just going to sleep.

I'm pretty sure my wifi isn't going to sleep. The wifi icon is on all the time with at least 3 bars. My cell signal is definitely weaker in my location. So, if it's seeking the strongest signal my wifi will always win.
Besides the possibility that my router is blocking some ports the phone wants to use, there's also a possible security issue. I know at one point the TMO My Account app would force a switch to cell communication versus wifi and I believe it was due to security concerns. Maybe some apps do the same thing.
I just did a GPS test, got a lock, stopped the test, closed the app, and the 3G icon stayed up for a couple of minutes then went away. Just one example.
Does seem odd, but I've just assumed there's some rational explanation. Could also be a bug...
your lucky you wake up and you have 3g. i wake up my phone is always on edge. lol

Today's update and 4g

This is a topic that hasn't been clearly covered so I'm posting it here.
The new update talks about new 4g scanning functionality. Has anyone had any time with this or any basis of comparison for 4g behavior before or after the update?
4g has to be one of my biggest gripes on this phone pre-update as it was the main reason why I bought it and it's connection strategy ends up using more battery than anything. Just wondering if this new "scanning" feature improves that at all or makes it worse.
Interested in this topic myself.
bump.. yeah I was wondering about this as well.
Initial observations:
When wimax radio is on a couple of scenarios happen.
- Wimax radio on but no 4g service = wimax state is changed to "disconnected" meaning it behaves the way it will when wifi is being used (it doesn't scan so it uses very little power and when in the disconnected state the dc connect errors don't flood logcat; dc connect errors are still present in this update). Before the update if the wimax radio is on it will constantly scan for service even when there is no service available and it will scan every x amount of seconds unless a wifi connection is present then the wimax state is disconnected if the wimax radio is on and a wifi connection is present.
- Wimax radio on, no wifi connection = wimax state will remain "disconnected" until the user taps "scan for service". If no service is found wimax state reverts to "disconnected" meaning the radio is on but not scanning (before the update the radio will constantly scan while it is on) as opposed to off and flooding logcat with dc connect errors in the background.
- Wimax radio on, no wifi connection, no service = notification saying "4g radio is on" (only saw this notification twice mainly because I didn't want to sit and watch my phone tell me the radio is on). Wimax state remains "disconnected" (not off) and will only scan when "tap to scan" is pressed.
What does this mean? Whether you have 4g service or not you're better off leaving the radio on as it will always revert to a disconnected state when no service is found during a scan. Leaving the radio on keeps the dc connect error flood from happening in the background which some people attributed to huge battery drain. As long as the wimax state is "disconnected" and you are not using a wifi connection it does not/will not scan until you tell it to. The constant scan every x amount of seconds when no service is found is what drained the battery for most users.
So what happens with the new update?
Sent from my HTC Evo using XDA App
He just told you in the post before yours.
I guess my new question is this:
Running the previous build, I would just leave 4g on so that I always had it if it was available. My office building has poor 4g signal penetration, so it cuts in and out frequently depending on where I walk. With the new update, if I walk into a portion of the office where my 4g drops, will it not pick back up automatically when I come back into a good service area? Am I going to have to manually tell it to "reconnect" by tapping the scan button every time I hit a dead pocket?

That's what appears is the new behavior of the wimax radio. It's a two-fold scenario and I believe sprint did this more for customers convenience since people with evos would more than likely keep track of what parts of town has 4g service.
It saves battery somewhat but requires the user to have to scan/rescan for service. I never turned my wimax radio off anyways prior to this update and I only flashed the update last night to check if there were any changes that I was hoping for.
Anything positive you've seen from the update? Are you going to run the new method or revert back to the old? Have you seen any battery improvements as a result of this new method? - it sounds like battery is why they changed it.
This update is actually LESS convenient for me as I now have to manually connect every time I want to use 4g considering how spotty the service is even in my "launch market" of Dallas.

For the most part sa is blanketed with 4g service so I am like you in that I have to rescan when I move.
Time will tell for me. I plan on building a rom later tonight with the new update and testing the kernel. I use extended batteries (seidio and sprint) so I don't pay attention to battery life anymore. I'm more concerned with useable performance.
After I build the rom I plan on seeing if I can get the wimax radio to revert back to auto scan. Again time will tell.
Alright well thanks for all the info. I've got a seidio battery on the way, but the log file thing is what piqued my interest. I'm about to flash the rooted version of the stock rom and give it a go.
I just flashed the latest - Is there not a widget or shortcut I can put on my homescreen to initiate the scan?

I didn't find a sense specific widget. I used lpp to make a homescreen shorty straight into the 4g settings window.
what is lpp?
Launcher pro plus. Or just the regular free launcher pro will do it for you too. That's just me. I always remove sense entirely whenever I tweak the rom and lpp is my home launcher replacement.

So what if you are in a good 4g area (also not using wifi) turn on the 4g then turn of the 4g does it go into the dc connect error flood? I rarely use my 4g but I avoid turning it on unless i plan to do a reboot to avoid batt drain issues. I am running myns rom so i havent tried to update anything since the latest update. Curious if the new update still forces a reboot after using 4g.

Yes you mentioned in the last paragraph about batt drain issues but I dont see how leaving 4g on solves this issue. Leaving 4g on all the time will probably drain more battery scanning for signal (when not available) and use more battery when using the 4g signal then when on 3g. I personally think if you use 4g after you are done with it turn it off reboot then go back to using your phone normally. Yes its a pain to reboot but imo you will get better battery life using this option then the options you are suggesting...thoughts?
Either way i tested it out for myself, i updated to latest radio and still getting the dc connect error flood. From my reading on this issue from other threads it seems this is an HTC code fix not an android fix...but that is speculation.

Lastly I read your response several times..maybe its not as clear as you think it is. Glad you wasted time writing that response then simply answering the question. I walked into a room with no WiMAX signal, 3G kicked in and the notification "Tap to scan" showed up. However, I did not touch anything and after a few minutes, my phone was once again connected through 4G.
So it will actually re-scan and reconnect eventually, even if you don't manually tap to scan.

You need to read better then. I distinctly said the dc connect errors were still present in the new update.
I distinctly said the wimax state is changed to disconnected when there is no service. I also explained what happens when the wimax state is disconnected.
BUT, since you seem to be adamant that you did in fact read what I posted I will spoon feed the info to you.
When the wimax state is "disconnected" it does not do anything, it does not scan and the radio itself is not off. It is in a "sleep" state.
I said the dc connect errors were still present in this update and I explained that leaving the 4g radio on will revert to a "disconnected" state when there is no service available. Since it doesn't scan in the "disconnected" state it is not using battery. Because of this, the radio is not off and does not flood the background with dc connect errors. In the "disconnected" state the radio does not scan for service and the impact on battery drain is minimal.
Now, if that isn't clear for you then nothing will be. I invite you to search my original unedited text again and show me that I did not SPECIFICALLY state that the dc connect errors are still present in this update. When you find it you will know that it is you who has not read the text properly, not me.

this is the part I dont necessarily agree with as ive seen my phone scan when no service is available (otherwise how would it automatically lock back onto 4g) but as the next post said his 4g kicked back in so does mine leading me to think what you are saying isnt correct about it not scanning and draining battery, i could be wrong but i will look into that as well

Since it doesn't scan in the "disconnected" state it is not using battery. Because of this, the radio is not off and does not flood the background with dc connect errors. In the "disconnected" state the radio does not scan for service and the impact on battery drain is minimal.

Doesnt add up, if the 4g reconnects automatically has to scan to reconnect to 4g not going to magically know that 4g service is available again

Now, if that isn't clear for you then nothing will be. I invite you to search my original unedited text again and show me that I did not SPECIFICALLY state that the dc connect errors are still present in this update. When you find it you will know that it is you who has not read the text properly, not me.

Funny you say search your text again when apparantly you didnt read what i said in my last post saying that you mentioned the batt drain issue (referring to the dc connect errors) never said you didnt speciffically state that, geez dude relax and realize I am trying to troubleshoot the situation as well

Sudden Drop signal

In the past few days, I've noticed my phone sometimes loses signal randomly: the bars will turn dark gray (not light gray) and there would be an "x" over the bars. Def. no "3G" indicator.
And it's happening in places where I normally get signal. A reboot doesn't fix this. I just have to wait until the signal is back up. I haven't installed anything new recently, nor am I running anything out of the ordinary.
Anybody else experiencing this as well? I did a quick search and wasn't able to find much.
I'm still on 2.3.2 (haven't gotten the OTA), unrooted.
I also experience this loss of signal. Constantly. Every time during a call.

Just to clarify, this isn't happening to me during calls, or hasn't happened to me during a phone call yet. Sometimes I pick up my phone, and I see I have no signal. And of course, attempting to call out or access gmail/internet proves it so.
It's very frustrating.
2.3.3 comes with a updated radio.
You can also fastboot the updated radio but your phone isn't modded.

I will need to clarify myself too, I meant I always lose the data signal every time I'm in a call. As for the phone signal (bars), I have no issues.

Are you on EDGE (2G) or 3G or WiFi when that happens? EDGE does not support concurrent use of voice and data, but the other types of data should.
