[Q] Network Status Symbol? - Epic 4G General

Hi guys, does anyone know where I can find explanations of the Epic 4G network status notifications? Sprint has inconveniently left out any explanations about the status notifications in their Basics Guide.
Specifically I'm confused about the 3G network status symbol. Sometimes it shows "3G" with up and down arrows underneath, sometime it shows the letter "D" underneath, and sometimes the symbol is missing entirely when the signal strength is 5 bars! When the symbol is absent, attempts to access the web are met with a "network error."
I assume that a missing 3G symbol means I have no EVDO coverage. However, shouldn't I at least have 1xRTT access? What does the symbol for that look like?
Thanks in advance!

I've noticed that when you are in 1x coverage it still shows as 3G. If the indicator is completely missing then you won't have data at all.

I was wondering why I had 3g today while roaming.

Thanks! It would have been nice for them to include a chart showing what each symbol means.

Wondering if anyone know what that D symbol is i get it constantly and its so annoying. Sometimes i have full bars then bars go away, then return only to show the D symbol.

I believe it means that the 3G radio has entered the Dormant state. This means that it's not actively transmitting or receiving data, which is a good thing most of the time! It's actually quite helpful, because this can help you diagnose whether or not the radio is being used more often than necessary. For instance, if the two arrows are simply white, which means no data through, your radio could still be running at power. Only when it shows 'D' does it mean it is now in power-saving mode.

Hm interesting, seems like it is helpful but at times i cant log into Gtalk or for instance when i was downloading apk file it stopped mid-way for 2 min then resumed.

That doesn't really have anything to do with the symbol being displayed. That just means that the connection to the server was dropped - which would happen regardless of whether or not the symbol is displayed. I've had the same issue you've described happen to me, but it's also happened on other phones. This just means that the TCP connection that you've got open to the other host was lost.
In this sense, displaying the 'D' makes it even more useful, because then you can cancel the transaction and start over. Most other phones would just simply display the blank bars. The radios go dormant on *any* phone, because otherwise, your battery would last about an hour or so at the most. The Epic is nice enough to tell you the radio's state in the status icon.

3G and H Icon

Up until yesterday i was nearly always getting then H (hsdpa) icon on my Hero. Now im getting the 3G icon. But when i use an app that required the data connection it changed to H. It's annoying because it takes around 5-10 seconds to change and while its changing the app doesnt seem to have any data connection.
Does anyone else experience this? And can anyone tell me why up until yesterday it was always H and now only goes to H when the data connection is needed? I haven't changed any settings or installed anything in the past few days.
It may just be your providers local cell tower that is having issues rather than the Hero. Drop them a call first to see if there are any reported problems.
According to my provider theirs no issues in my area.
I just dont understand how mine can change from always being a H to being 3G changing to H when i use data. It's really annoying because when i open browser it takes around 10 seconds for the 3G to change to H and in that time no pages load. Then if i stay on one page for a while and move to another the H has gone back to 3G so takes another 10 seconds to change.
Could anyone who gets the H symbol please do me a favour? When you wake your phone from sleep is the H symbol always showing or is it sometimes 3G changing to H when you use any app that requires data?
Thanks
I think my H icon works as it should here in Finland. H is shown only when some data is being transferred, hence it is not always being displayed when I wake the screen. Sometimes it is shown, but I think then some widget or FB integration or something like that is being updated / synchronized.
I really feel that this is correct behavior, HSPA would suck your battery dry quite fast if it would be always on.

I think your right with it being the correct behaviour. Even though it takes an extra few seconds to start the connection when browsing etc it does seem that my battery is lasting longer. Now if i could just find a way of getting it to display 3G instead of H when away from my house.

I think there's no way of crippling the HSPA functionality of the phone, phone makes the selection of using HSPA (or not) based on network's decision (decided on coverage & various measurements) and capability.

[Q] Data static icon "H" = what?

Hey all,
I've noticed on my new Milestone 2 the data icon in the status bar changes from a "3G" with up/down arrows beneath it, to a "H" with up/down arrows beneath it quite rapidly when using the internet, etc.
I've looked through the little book thing it came with; no mention of a "H" icon.
Anyone else have it and know what it means?
Thank goodness for XDA
Found out it means:
"H= HSDPA 3.5G (basically faster than 3G)"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6399504&postcount=2
It probably shouldn't be rapidly switching between H and 3G, but oh wells...
Sounds like you found a store
I find that mine also rapidly switches between the two, every single time I do anything that utilises data, it will drop to 3G and seemingly do some negotiation, then switch back to HSPA before anything happens..

Yeah; cancelled the online order as I was sick of the stuffing around.
Bourke St store in Melbourne CBD had a handset.
Gotta say, the phone if much nicer in 'person' compared to all the photos...they don't do it justice!
Too bad I won't get the free months...but I've got the phone, so :-D

issue regarding constant network switching.

OK got my galaxy however got some concerns regarding the constant network switching from H to 3g. I know am in a area of very good network coverage so that is not the issue but I have noticed my phone keeps switching between the H and 3g. It seems to change to H when the a connection is required for instance now as am typing its on 3g, however when a data connection is required it then changes to H, however as am typing it sometimes just switches to H even though am not using the data connection. I can probably see the logic here for the phone to switch to H when a data connection is needed but am thinking all this constant switching must somehow impact on the battery. Av, always used the app by Philip Mangelow the network app, to set the phone to gsm auto prl, which apparently is the best setting to use as it stops the radio from constantly searching for the network, however the same app, won't work on galaxy. Is their any code or tweek required to enable gsm auto prl.?
Yup, this happens on all phones I have( DHD, Nexus S, SGS2).
It will show H or H+ (if you have HSPA+ coverage ) when its actually downloading /uploading data. There was an article on the web that explained why its done. I will search for it again as I didnt bookmark it. But this actually increases the standby time of the phone and reduces battery drain.

Cheers matey looking forward to seeing that article cause have used quiet and few android phones and never had this before, and if it's good for battery then fine but would still prefer to set that gsm auto prl setting so if anyone has any suggestions please.
Exact same problem here! the strange thing is my SGS1 was always on H.
getting same, mine goes on 3g then changes to H, I think this is draining my battery, i full charged phone overnight and took it of this morning on 100% i went on XDA app for about 20 mins and i used 6% battery life just using this and nothing else. that to me seems like a huge drain
I set a toggle switch to turn off data when not needed? This may help in battery life, but im not sure why it keeps witching from H to 3g?
I suppose its not a big deal i guess, it doesnt seen to affect my battery life.
ok, surely this cannot be good for the battery, i have noticed, whenever, i unlock my phone, it shows H high speed, but when unlocked it goes into 3g. Surely, the phone is supposed to be on 3G when screen of the H, when i turn screen on to use it?.

KE7 build + KE4 modem: No longer dropping from "H+" to "3g" when idling!

Have you guys noticed this? When my phone idled with KDD/KE1/KE2, it would idle with "3g" icon displayed. With KE7, it now idles with "H" displayed instead. From what I can tell, coming out of idle to "H+" is much faster now when you trigger demand for a data connection.

Hmm interesting, I just saw mine dip into 3g for the first time this morning. BUT, it immediately went back to H on idle.
I know for me, KDD/KE1/KE2 never idled the device in "H" mode at work... it constantly idled with "3g".

Mine didn't change either. Maybe OP's got something running in the background that's keeping data awake.
For the first since ive had the phone, its showing 'E' icon, had g/3g/H, but now its showing E in my flat. Had phone two weeks.

Nope, nothing running in the background. And, nothing is using the data stream as none of the arrows are lit up, it's just idling on H now vs 3g like before.
When I do initiate a data pull (ie, forcing an E-mail sync), it still jumps to H+ and the data arrows light up. Once done, it jumps back down to H to idle.
Really strange as I've *never* seen the H before... only 3g or H+ in my area.

Interesting, from the variances we're seeing, it looks like there were some major changes from KDJ -> KE4 modem.

Read my response above, there is no activity when idling in H. When I force data, it jumps to H+ and data streams light up.
Again, the key point to my post is that I've never seen H before. With previous modems, it was all H+ or 3g only in my area. Something definitely changed from KE2 -> KE7 for me at least in the Austin area, just not sure what the change means.
Mine still idles in 3G and switches over to H+ as needed
mine idles in 3g and when in use H isn't it to save battery
In an ideal situation..a phone should drop to 3g when data communication is in idle and stays in this standby mode until an application starts transmitting or downloads data..than the modem goes out from standby state and grabs the highest connection available 3g or h or h+ depending on network and signal strength.
By operating this way the phone dose'nt waste precious power maintaining high speed connection during idle/standby state..
This info was given by friends working in telco companies..How samsung writes the software for the modem to behave is a different story.

Much better this way. Saves a lot of battery. I don't think that its guaranteed when none of the arrows next top the network icon are lit up, no data is being transfered.

i'm not sure where the idea came, but there is no battery saving from having a phone idle on HSDPA or idle on 3G. its the same battery with both. i guess i can see how one would make that assumption, but its definitely not true

Am I having data dropout issues?

So I was at work and when I woke up my device, and tried to refresh my mailbox I noticed the 4gLte symbol wasnt there and then it said no data connection. A second later it came back? Is this Lg's power management? Or maybe my signal at work was bad atm. Should this concern me?

If it doesnt happen all the time, then I wouldnt worry. Your device was probably running at hspa+ during sleep, when you woke it up, it seeked a new signal and associated itself with LTE signal.

I wouldn't of minded if it was at hspa+ but what alarmed me was the message "no data connection" when my email app tried to refresh my inbox. And I looked at notification bar and there was no signal icon whatsoever
