Anyone tried rooting using this method? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Might be for the international version only, but I was curious. I don't have the guts to try it.

I tried it in the VZW G2. The root works (Phone reports being rooted in Settings\About Phone\Status screen) but it doesn't install SU. I tried installing SuperSU and both SuperUser apps (by Chains DD and ClockworkMod) but the binaries wouldn't install.

We are already rooted, I'd there a reason to go this route or are you just playing around?

I'm just a bit wary of hacking software that:
a) originates from china
b) lights up an antivirus program (Symantec) like a christmas tree when attempting to download.
Having found the same exploit that the OP talks about, I went ahead and tried that first. Since I couldn't get the SU binaries installed, I ended up using the chinese one in an older ready-to be-rebuilt laptop. The fact that a Trojan was found in it still bothers me immensely... (I'm travelling for work, so I don't have the Trojan info readily available, but can post details over the weekend if anyone is interested.)

Wifi won't work after trying to root. Help!

So I posted a thread here asking for help (the phone was functional at this point) and one user suggested a root method to try out in the comments there http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2379833
After running this root method my wifi is now dead. It's killing me! Someone please help me out here.

Ouch. Your WiFi is broken because he told you to flash a US VZW (XT-907) firmware.
Okay. First, you should try to find a 201M restore file. That will get your WiFi back. Next, since you've got a Dev edition, you can bootloader unlock and install a custom recovery, then flash a root zip
EDIT: Found it

While the link I gave him was unidentified as to warnings to non vzw users (now fixed) , the flashing of vzw sw comes in step 8 clearly he would have had to have pulled it from a xml himself if he even got that far. And if he did it would have been from reading the rzr op. As the bare motochopper has no vzw sw inside.

I didn't get the system img at all. I just wanted to flash the superuser files to /data which I thought would set me up to flash the whole thing with Rom manager.
Anyway, thank you for the help. I am downloading the firmware you linked to now. This guide tells me to edit the XML file and remove the getvar text from it, should this apply here as well? (Edit: Cant post outside links, but I think you get my point)
I'm going to use RSD 6.1.4 to restore the firmware. Any further instructions would be appreciated as I have never done this before.

Don't think you'll need to since it's designed for your device. You can try without the edit and do it if it doesn't work. I'll try to find a guide for RSDLite (been a while since I used it myself - fastboot is usually what I use now...

Dear sir,
I'd like you to buy a ticket to Karachi right now because I'd run all the way to the airport to KISS YOU until the police dragged me away.
The process worked. My wifi just turned back on. Thank you very much for the weekend stress relief!
I think I'm gonna give up on the idea of rooting this thing until there's a more reliable method available. Also, if anyone has the same issue then take note: I did remove the getvar commands when using RSD.

I am glad SC took care of you & I am sorry I lead you in that direction.
Please fill in some details for others?
How do you have a path to the newer sw? Is it your carriers ota? If you can obtain the same in the xml form there is an easy root using a modded ver w/ unlocked phone. The ota.zip could also be useful if you take it while you have root. It resides in /cache.
Thank you

It wasn't your fault for trying to help, so it's ok. I'm glad a solution existed.
I'm more than willing to answer the questions, but I am a layman here so please explain some things for me: What do you mean by SW? I just installed the update by going into about phone -> system update on Wifi. The carriers here don't even support 3G, much less 4G (So now you know why Wifi was important for me).
The phone came unlocked day one when I bought it from a friend's friend. I don't know if he did it that way or if it comes unlocked because it is the developer edition.
I installed CW Recovery using Fastboot. I installed the incorrect superuser file using Motofail which wrote the superuser file but failed at all other steps. I was then unable to either access or remove this superuser apk file.
Since I am back on 4.0.4. now, what's the easy way to get root access and superuser permissions that you mention? I wish other XT902 owners would post here too, generating interest would really help in getting development support for this phone.

Lol no problem, glad to know it worked. Getting root is actually really simple since you're unlocked. All you need to do is flash a custom recovery and flash a root .zip from there... No exploits required
I can try to write up a guide to that if you want

I tried that, and while it did install superuser, it seemed to have no effect. I couldn't get permissions for any app and using ROM manager's functions would just freeze up that particular application. Any ideas?

Once you root on 404 you can grab your update.zip & copy it to your sd . Any rooting exploit would evolve from that Or the newest xml ver of the 404 you just flashed from rsd. You may be able to request it from your carrier.
---------- Post added at 01:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:40 PM ----------
You can paste the mods from my vzw restore (no vzw software will be used) into the 404 xml & obtain root from a preinstalled cwmr! Then maintain root with voodoo for your ota.
I will help you just read the op. Link is in my signature.

Android Rooting on AT&T SM-N900A new OTA update

Okay so I am brand new to the Android OS. I have been an iPhone user for about 5 years and jailbreaking was such a simple task and I fully understood how that worked. I'm glad I made the switch to android because it does everything a jailbroken iPhone does. I just found out about this rooting stuff. How does it work and how can I do it with Note 3 on AT&T SM-N900A? I downloaded some new OTA update but I don't know what it means.

RdlV is for versions prior to your MJ5. Don't even think about using it!
Kingo Root works well but is suspected to be malware (search for details) and all links to it have been banned from xda until kingo devs prove it is safe. That doesn't seem to be happening very quickly.

You will brick your device if you use RDLV.
As far as I know, Kingo will work. However, due to it sending our IMEI number to China, I don't wanna do it yet.

They said the newest Kingo update removed those calls back home and that they won't be doing that anymore. I don't know anything about them sending IMEI info to China, but supposedly the connections to their servers in China was to download the updates as the program rooted the phone.
I was skeptical about kingo root but after doing some research I went ahead and did it and everything seems to be fine. Yes, it takes your imei but no one really knows what they do with it if anything. All rooting is, is finding exploits and utilizing them to gain root access. In all actuality, you never truly know the intentions of any new developers that come on the scene.

I tried the method with survival mode and disabling superuser and the official mode in Wanam to try to go from MI9 to MJ5 ......everything is fine until it reboots but always fails at 27% point of installation. ... trotted it 7 or so times. .... I remember reading about users having the same issue with the instalation stalling at the same percentage every time. It has something to do with you changing something (can be a number of things) in the system folder. Think about it, did you change the boot animation? I finally solved 2 problems (the installation problem and the sudden failure of Kies3 to see my phone) by going to recovery, doing a wipe data and cache and factory reset. I then re-rooted using the De La Vega method, disabled root and checked "survival mode in SuperSU Pro and then accepted the update to MJ5. This time it made it past the 27% installation point and completed. The I re-enabled root in SuperSU Pro launched titanium backup and batch restored apps and all is well. So I am finally rooted and on MJ5 without having to use Kingo. Thanks for your help.

WiFi Tether 4.4.4 - Requires Root

This is for anyone who has root on 4.4.4 but also has write protection enabled. (Used SuperSU to keep root through the update).
This app will allow you to enable the native WiFi tether without modifying the system (Which we can't do anyways). I have been using this for about an hour with no issues.
Finally, I didn't make this, I'm just someone who's stuck between places and need WiFi tethering for my job and hate spending money. Use at your own risk of course.

Yeah i just made the connection now. Forgot not everyone has unlocked BLs. In theory, if the app can make the change, you can too.
The app literally applies the same exact exploit as the one I've already released.

No it does not, it runs a command after the phone is booted that while requiring root to run does not make any actually changes to the system.
Again, I have a 1 for write protection (meaning its enabled) and SuperSU basically stuck in System and have no issues running the app, making WiFi hot spots, and having devices connected to it.
Make sure you have root survival set up as well, I'm not sure if the update would remove root without it but I don't think you would want to take that chance.

I attempted this exploit by you TopSnake ( http://bit.ly/1zz1JOE) and after rebooting my build.prop was deleted and all renamed files were restored to their original state. Was there another exploit you were talking about? This was the only one I could find in the dev section for the latest update.
I do know that you can run a simple command to do what this app does but this app can run on boot up which saves some time.

The OP stated he was write protected, so he can't copy the build.prop over the stock one. My app doesn't write to the system it runs the /system/bin/setprop command to set the property. The build.prop sets the property on boot but after the phone has booted the build.prop is never read again. So replacing it on write protected devices won't work.

[Q] Verizon OTA update, and towel root

I apologize if this has been covered, but i cannot find another situation like mine.
I have the verizon variant of the Galaxy s5
Currently on version 4.4.2
I rooted using towelroot on 4.4.2 i believe.
The verizon update came through and i completely forgot about root.
I tried to install, and it failed, then i lost root access.
Currently sitting here without root access, running towel root v3 won't work nor will changing the modstrings.
Root checker says no root,
But verizon OTA update won't work either. Get the error at the android open belly screen.
I need some help, i used to be awesome working with motorola phones, and root/unroot/restore/custom roms.
Samsung is a different story.
I need to get on the android 4.4.4 update (without tripping knox) because my bluetooth connectivity is dog ****.
Thanks for the help.

Solution,
Plug the phone into a windows laptop (may work on mac too) update the drivers. Auto play should pop up and VZW upgrade assistant will be an option. Click on this, it's pretty much automated from this point. You will not be rooted, even though a part of my problem was i wasn't rooted, but the update was failing. So thanks to HGFireHazard. He's the man.
If you have any questions i will try to answer them.
THanks

Having the same issue here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I did a factory reset and that didn't solve the issue.
I was able to get updated to NI2. If you plug in the phone to a computer (Windows in my case), you can run the VZW Updater that Windows asks if you want to run when you first plug in the phone. From there it pretty much takes care of everything. Although obviously I'm now unrooted and will have to find a way to get that back.
Ni2? What is that.

NI2 is the newest build from Verizon but it's the 4.4.4 you're looking for.
Ok. Thanks didn't realize it was called ni2. It does it all through the updater though on the desktop?

Those are just the last 3 digits of it. That's basically how those on the forum have been distinguishing between updates is by the last 3. Yup it did everything. Once I installed the app and told it to update it did everything start to finish without any additional input from me.
How did you install the upgrade assistant. Verizon website says auto play should pop up. But it's not popping for me. USB debugging is enabled. Did you manually download it

Are you on Windows 8 or 8.1 by chance? If so, when you plug it in you should get a pop up in the upper right hand corner that will allow you to run it.
No. Windows 7. It goes into installer mode to update drivers and then goes into media mode.

There should be a popup that comes up when you first plug in the device. If there isn't, that's a setting you must have changed in Windows that you will have to modify. I originally tried to find an executable to run myself as it took me a minute to find the location to run it on Windows 8.1 but I wasn't able to locate. Unless someone else can chime in you'll have to get that popup to show.
Just flipped over to my girlfriends windows 8.1 laptop. seems to be installing just fine.
Thanks for all of the help i will report back if this works.
Thanks
Nick

Root

I have a Droid Maxx, and Razr Maxx HD and perhaps some beer cash for the answer to root...
I was thinking flashing twrp, then let it root, or am i way off or require an unlocked bootloader? I tried sunshine, but no go as it requires root.
So if i understand, you can get root without an unlocked bootloader, or is an unlocked bootloader a prerequisite of root? I am thinking not, but i am a Windows/SharePoint guy and pretty dumb to linux...

You need an unlocked bootloader to flash TWRP (which flashes SuperSU). There is no known root method available yet because the phone has only been out for about 8 hours.
The Sunshine team has apparently said they will not be supporting Motorola devices for 4.4.4 in their 3.0 release, only HTC, so unlikely it will work there.
Has anyone tried Towelroot?

I think they said the opposite: "Verizon users on 4.4.4 you will have to wait for the 3.0 release."

Yes, that is in the website. Someone posted this in another thread here. There's no link to the OP so I'm not sure beyond what it says.

Yeah, I didn't think I'd need root but the dpi on this thing is just way too high. For being such a great display it's hindered by the scaling. Easily fixed with root though!!
Found this on some Chinese site. If I had a backup phone I'd try it. But I don't. So can't risk bricking. Anyone else want to take a leap of faith? Ummm... Won't let me post the link because I'm still a noob apparently... So gonna try breaking it up. Just remove the line returns and spaces.

Didn't work for me. Too be safe I used a virtual machine with a snap shot taken before installing so I can revert back without the risk of spyware. Also tried Kingo but no luck with either.

Also vroot during the root attempt installs 2 apps on your phone and who knows what it installs on Windows without running a regmon, if you do decide to try it make sure you uninstall the 2 chinese apps when your done trying. Also like I mentioned above I would highly not to install vroot or Kingo on your daily driver windows machine. Leave the testing to people who have virtual machines they can install these apps on.
I have used vroot and kingo in the past to successfully root so I know they do/can work, they just haven't been updated yet to work on the Droid Turbo. Hopefully they will.

Dang, you guys got my hopes up reading through this.
I keep checking the other Moto forums for root options. I'm banking on anything that will root a Moto 4.4.4 phone will work on ours. The Moto G 4.4.4 update has a later build date than our version.
