[Q] Beer spilled on my Nexus 4. Need some questions answered - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so here goes. Last night a friend spilled roughly half a glass of beer on my N4. It was lying on the table face down and the back was covered in beer. I'm using the Ringke cover and beer got in to the phone. I switched off my phone immediately, dried it up and left it as is for a couple of hours. Now here's where the weird stuff happens. Everything working fine except for the fact that my phone can only output the ringtone sound. No other media playback(game/music/message tone) worked. Then I realized the phone mic and headset speaker had crapped out as well. Also when I plug in the headphones and twist the jack around, the phone goes crazy and cuts off the audio and turns on Google Now's voice search. Feeling pretty bummed I switched the phone off again and let it be. Fast forward a few more hours and now the phone is working fine. All the previous symptoms are gone except for the fact the headphone jack problem still persists.
Is there anything I can do to fix the headphone jack problem?
Also what are the chances that the speaker and mic problem will come back?
Would spraying the headphone jack, mic and the speakers down with a can of compressed air help? (obviously I would do that with the power off and wait at least an hour till it dried off)

Put it in a zip lock bag of uncook rice. For at least 24 hrs. Had a friend that her iPhone feel in the toilet. We did that for a day and it work just fine. Don't eat the rice.

Well in his case it would be fermented rice.

100%...put it in uncooked rice as previously mentioned. After 24 hrs or so you should be fine if things are already looking ok except for the headphone thing.

Also, don't spray any compressed air. If there is any moisture left in the phone you could spread it to worse areas in the phone.

Water Damaged N1

So this weekend the old Nexus took a dip-see with me in the lake. There is hope for those that drop their devices in water or liquids. You have to be on the ball and have a little bit of patience.
As SOON as I jumped in I realized that it was in my pocket, ripped it out, took out the battery and started drying it. I let it sit in a sealed tupperware container with rice for 2 days. Whether or not there's any truth to the rice myth, I was not willing to take any chances.
Wednesday I sat down and completely disassembled the phone. I purchased a contact and head cleaner (basically a solvent that quickly evaporates) and sprayed all the electrical contacts and components within the phone. Carefully reassembled the Nexus One, and she BOOTED!
So, there is hope for those water damaged devices. Act quickly, don't try to turn it on, and you may be good to go
Happy water damaged N1 owner,
Jim
P.S. ALL liquid damage indicators within my phone were set off. This really works.
O rly?
..........
This is good info. Thanks.

I was at the beach and water washed up onto my pocket with my Nexus One in it. It was pretty bad the first day, the screen kept flickering on and off and I put it in a tupperware with rice. Then when I took it out after a day, the WiFi wouldn't work, but then started working later on in the day. Now my speakers don't work for some reason. It would cut on and off while my ringtone goes off, but when I listen to music, it plays for a second and then pauses the song. My headphones still work fine with it though. Does anyone have any idea how I should go about fixing this? (sorry for invading this thread OP)
i've done it 3 times now... heh... rice worked everytime, no disassembly.

was probably a mistake to turn it on before you dropped it in rice.

Why would you even be that close to water at all with your Nexus in your pocket? Did you think nothing was going to happen? Did you forget it was there? Were you saving someone o_0?
This has happened to me, but I thought you were not supposed to close the lid? Condensation has to get out someway besides rice absorbing it. Works for me

And hopefully 4 months down the road I'm not kicking myself in the ass wondering why my device suddenly stopped working and saying 'Damn, maybe I SHOULD have disassembled and cleaned it...'
And to the above poster: I'm not sure you're supposed to put the lid over either. It's been 37 degrees celsius with the humidex for the past few days and I don't have A/C.. there was so much moisture in the air I had no other choice. But it seems to have worked =)
There are much better desiccants out there than rice. Calcium chloride, for one, is easily obtainable as DampRid at just about any grocery store or hardware store. It would be wise to open up the phone and clean it with some isopropyl alcohol, though. Especially the guy who got seawater on his...

I'm sure it wasn't intentional, maybe he thought he took it out already. Be nice dude.
Yeah I would agree there was no need for assembly. Modern electronics are actually very very good when it comes to water. I have about 200 watercooled computers under my belt, and the inevitable leaks that come with them :') Even with deionised water [customer wanted, like an idiot], the worst that happens is it causes a surge, which the mobo force turns off the system. Even then there is NO damage, and just needs cleaning and drying to return it to normal.
It will be the same with the phone, if you can get it off/remove the power, there is abosolutely no reason [other than maybe screen condensing] there would be damage.
Me also, just got back from the dead with my Nexus.
Last weekend I went to a club that had a nice swimming pool and during the night, some idiots pushed me in the water when I was close to the pool. (no one saw who was the idiot).
I got out of the water, and took my phone out from my pocket: it rebooted itself, the screen was flickering and the phone was vibrating hard. Instantly I've removed the battery and put some toiled paper around it.
Went home, put it in the rice, uncovered. Next day, like an idiot, I've tried to boot the phone, which booted until a certain point, then started to flicker and it turned off by itself.
I thought it died completely, but still had a hope for it, and left it in the rice, this time covered for two more days. I've also put inside some little bags with silica (the ones you get in shoe boxes and electronics ones)
Then, yesterday, I've tried my luck and it booted with no problem, now happily working with no issue at all.
I was very close to order a new one
Love this phone!
I'll remember that. Just incase I want to go swimming with my n1.

[Q] Got it Wet

I got my S4 wet last night. Dropped it in the sink. I immediately removed the battery, SIM and microSD, and wiped down the inside. The screen was working when I removed the battery, a few hours later, I put the battery back in and rebooted. The screen didn't work, but the LED worked and the startup sound played.
I got some rice and put some in a Ziplock bag with some of the rice. 24 hours later, I tried a reboot. Still no screen.
I'm not sure what to do next, as I've never gotten a phone wet before. Should I continue the rice treatment? Try something else? Hang it up and file an insurance claim?

Honestly I'd try the rice thing for longer. I know if you Google it you can find the time needed and all that. The rice can be hit or miss though. Good luck! And sorry to hear about the misfortune.
Once it gets wet, the longer you give it in the rice before trying to turn it on the better. Sometimes it may take 7 days in rice to get all the moisture out.

Eureka!
Good news! After 48+ hours in the rice, my S4 is back among the living. Thanks for the advice, everyone.
I was going to say alcohol wipes work too with getting the moisture out

Earpiece water damage?

Was at a party last week and my mother-in-law to be managed to spill a glass of wine in the general direction of my phone. It didn't get soaked but a good few droplets made it onto the front. I turned it off and took it apart best I could to dry it out and it seemed to be working fine.
Now though I have noticed that the volume through the earpiece is greatly reduced - it used to be too loud on maximum phone volume but now I have trouble hearing people on the phone. Is this the sort of thing that could be caused by liquid damage or should I look to other causes? If it is, how expensive/possible is it to repair?

It could be that the contacts are dirty because of the dried up residue of the wine. Removing and inserting your headphone plug a couple of times (20 or so) might remove it. Worth a try before sending in for repair. If it is just replacing the headphone jacket then repair should not be too expensive. I assume you tested with another set of earpieces as well to make sure it is the phone ?

N4 fell in water, need help/suggestions please :)

Alright, so my N4 fell into the water for approx 5 seconds before I picked it up quickly. Turned it off, cleaned it with a dry cloth, and put it in some rice quickly.
Any help/suggestions on what I can do to make sure any major harm doesn't happen to the device? Should I open its back cover to clean or anything?

Let it sit for awhile (a few hours) and see what happens.

this probably won't help you but I've got some experience with electric devices and fluids.. they never survive! not in my case anyway..
if you have the tools you could open the case so it can dry better..
Verstuurd van mijn Nexus 4 met Tapatalk
Leave it to dry completely, so in rice for over 24 hours. After that best thing to do is open it up and clean any corrosion using isopropyl alcohol, pay close attention to connectors and charging port, but avoid getting alcohol on the LCD or in a microphone. Do not try and power on the device until you've done this. You might find the water didn't actually get in, mine was fully submerged for about 1 second and there was no moisture inside at all.
Thanks all, I'll keep your help and suggestions in mind. I'll keep you guys posted if I have further problems after I take it out of the rice.
An update : took it outta the rice after 20-22 hours, everything else works fine except microphone. Doesn't work at all. I can use a headset which has a mic then it works. Could I do something about the microphone?
In my opinion try another 24 hours in rise. When I submerged mine, I left it for over 48 hours fully covered with rise in a bag on a direct sunlight. Also I've managed to remove the back cover in the first 12 hours, so it was in rise on pieces.
Phone is working without problems so far.
Update : Went to the service center and got the microphone fixed, they didn't even replace it (like i thought they would) , fixed it in like 5-10 minutes.

How did you open it?

S5 got wet!

So my waterproof cover was closed and I was blasting music. My phone fell into a water stream I was washing dishes. Instantly my speakers started sucking and it hasn't been the same (about 30 mins ago). I thought this phone was water proof?!?! the rest of the phone is working fine. I opened up the case, no water inside. I am confused to say the least!
Do you think the speakers are screwed? I don't understand this. Its past my return period should have tried this the first day I got it!
The phone is water resistant, not waterproof. Also give it a little more time, the speakers will go back to normal.

There is water on the speaker membrane which distorts the sound and makes it quieter. Once it dries out you will be fine.
Thank you. Do you think I should keep the phone off?

Nope, don't worry about it. Your speaker is still wet just give it more time.
Happened to me when I went in the shower, the earpiece where you listen to people on calls went really quiet and tinny for a few hours.
I crapped myself lol but you just gotta be patient and the water will leave the phone

I have washed my phone several times. Also I have taken shots in a pool underwater. My phone doesn't have any problems. Remember you cant listen to music or talk on the phone immediately after you take it out of the water. The speakers are full of water and you have to give them some time.
It's good to know ! Thanks for the advice
Yoh! like how much time do I give them? hours? days?

S5 speaker
Bros.. I did the same thing... I dropped it in the water. And now.... after @30 mins the speakers seem to be like... Soud like the membeane is punctured. Can that be? I gave it a lot of shooks and I 'smacked' it, so to say, with the back of it to my upper foot, so that the water could get out faster... Was that bad? confused:
no longer working after getting wet.

I was sitting in water that was not even deep enough for the water to cover my legs playing with my grandson for about 20 minutes. I was told my the salesperson the Galaxy S5 was waterproof not water resistant for up to 30 minutes. No water depth was specified either. When I got out of the water, my phone would not turn on and I took off my otterbox because it had water in it. I then took off the back cover and found it had water inside it and on the battery. I have now had it drying out with the battery out for 8 hours. I tried it again and it still will not come on. I have to say though that it was starting to act up before it got submerged in water. The last several days it would not wake sometimes unless I took the back off and took the battery out and put it back in. The camera the last two days has been not wanting to work sometimes too. Or sometimes it would hang up. I have had this phone less than a year. I bought it right before the S6 came out. I think there is an issue with this phone besides the water issue. I have googled the other problems and they seem to be common with the S5.

there's got to be more to the story..this phone, if the back cover is completely snapped on + charging flap closed, can be fully submerged in up to 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes with absolutely no harm done to the phone. That's the manufacturers specs.
Personally, I jumped into a lake off the back of a boat with the phone in my hand (while recording video) and proceeded to swim around for about 45 minutes with the phone in my hand the entire time.
I'd say the deepest it went was around 5 feet.
As you can imagine there was a lot of pressure hitting it in all directions due to the swimming aspect..anyway point being, nothing was damaged.

I dropped my S5 in the toilet yesterday and I quickly removed it from the toilet. The toilet was almost empty and only the top part of the phone where you put your earphones in got wet. I have put it in rice but it is still not working. The bottom part didn't have the safety guard on but it didn't get wet. Why is it not working?
let the s5 dry up completely before turning it on
The difference between water-resistant to water proof is that water proof is impervious to fluids which means it doesn't allow not even a drop of liquid into the phone which only works with waterproof cases.. Water-resitance which the galaxy s5 has can withstand the penetration of water. Keep in mind taking it for a dive has some risks.. Make sure to completely dry off the phone once your done using it in the pool. It's normal for the speaker to sound muffle for a couple of hours.. Same goes for the microphone.. You won't be able to call or use any app that uses the microphone once you take it out of the pool. Just wait for it to dry off in a couple of hours!
Cheers!
