I got my S4 wet last night. Dropped it in the sink. I immediately removed the battery, SIM and microSD, and wiped down the inside. The screen was working when I removed the battery, a few hours later, I put the battery back in and rebooted. The screen didn't work, but the LED worked and the startup sound played.
I got some rice and put some in a Ziplock bag with some of the rice. 24 hours later, I tried a reboot. Still no screen.
I'm not sure what to do next, as I've never gotten a phone wet before. Should I continue the rice treatment? Try something else? Hang it up and file an insurance claim?

Honestly I'd try the rice thing for longer. I know if you Google it you can find the time needed and all that. The rice can be hit or miss though. Good luck! And sorry to hear about the misfortune.
Once it gets wet, the longer you give it in the rice before trying to turn it on the better. Sometimes it may take 7 days in rice to get all the moisture out.

Eureka!
Good news! After 48+ hours in the rice, my S4 is back among the living. Thanks for the advice, everyone.
I was going to say alcohol wipes work too with getting the moisture out

i wiped it dry seconds after it dropping with a microfiber towel.. put it back together and tried turning it on. it worked by the screen acting weird... kinda greenish?? turned it off and threw the phone in a bag of uncooked rice in hopes its some water that seeped into somewhere that will come out D:
any ideas what happened?
"any ideas what happened?"
hmmmmm.....water damaged!!! all i know water damaged electronics gives u random issues even after a month from drying.
claim it if u have insurance with asurion on t-mobile.
bought directly from google D:
with or without contract on t-mobile?
Follow the same procedure as posted on this forum dozens of times.... Don't turn it on until it's BONE DRY, ie: no moisture in the container you're drying it in at LEAST TWICE.
Otherwise might as well as flushed it.
very hard for a bunch of rice to get wet .. xD but ill leave it in the rice for a few hours
I used hair dryer. My n1 works fine after beeing in water for a few min.

LOL>> You had me rollin, just think of the smell
lol u guys xD
i threw it in a bag of uncooked rice for like.. 6-8 hrs. took it out. dusted it off and popped everything back in and turned it on. works fine now
oh man D: so scared ><
but thx guys for the suggestions
my n1 has been completely soaked visible water under the screen, and it came back to life (after a week in a bag of rice) i think you will be just fine
I use 100% isopropyl alcohol. It forces out the water and dries fairly quickly when placed somewhere warm with good air flow. The more you can open up the case the better though.
Isopropyl is what I use to clean electronics when soldering. It will not hurt the circuits, but you need to let the alcohol evaporate completely; though this happens quicker than water by far.
I discovered my toddler chewing on my mytouch battery today. I wiped it off really well and put it back in the phone thinking (maybe stupidly) that it was fine. The phone started up at first, then shut down and wouldn't turn back on. I cleaned the contacts on the battery and on the phone first dry then with rubbing alcohol. I got it to turn on again once or twice but it shut off again. Now it won't start.
Should I put the whole phone in rice like when you get a phone wet? Or is the battery just ruined? Is this normal behavior for a wet battery? I've never gotten just the battery wet so I have no idea. Thanks!
Try the rice idea. Make sure you leave it somewhere it will get some sun but not too much sun.

Hey all,
My phone got a little wet today from the rain. It was acting funny, like rebooting itself automatically. I opened the back cover, and found that a bit of water made its way into the back. I immediately took the battery out. I have let it dry, and as far as I can see, there is no water visible any more, though I have not ventured to take my phone apart.
My phone has stopped working though. When I put the battery in, it immediately boots up and shows the white text (Galaxy S GT-19000M Samsung) for a couple seconds, goes blank, and then it pops up again. It does this in a continuous loop.
Holding the power button alone does nothing.
Holding Down Volume, the center button, and the power button together will show the "Download" screen for a couple seconds, but will then reset.
Holding Up Volume, the center button, and the power button together will bring it into safe mode (i think its called that?) but will reset again as well.
Is my phone screwed? Any suggestions?
Thanks so much.
How long did you wait before turning on your phone again? To be secure that it's dry inside you normally should wait at least 24 hours...
If there was really water inside, there is the possibility that it left some sediments behind.
In your position I would just wait and let the sgs dry for a time...
floo
Put it into airing cupboard minimum 24 hours, retry

Place phone, battery, back cover, etc in a bowl of uncooked rice. Make sure all parts are covered by at least an inch of rice. Wait 24hours. Then try rebooting. Discard rice

use still water from the chemist.
With respect if you put your phone in rice then cover it completely in material our you risk covering your internals with starch dust!

If it doesn't work even when it's really dry, that could be your solution.
-Remove Battery
-Insert the Phone in PURE WATER (!!!), so that everything gets washed out.
-Let it dry for a loooong time (I wouldn't turn it on for at least 4 days)
but that's one of the last things you should try...

This is the way to go! The rice will absorb the mosture from the phone and it will most likely work after.
You should wait at least 24h. if you can wait more, do so!
And don't worry about starch dust...

THIS IS A LAST RESORT METHOD
If that doesn't work, get some distilled water and get your phone in it (without the battery). Water is a solvent, it will likely remove minerals deposit where they shouldn't be. Afterwards, you can let it dry in a bowl of rice for a couple of days and pop your battery in and see if everything works.
Thanks for all your tips! I will try the rice method and see what happens.
hey mine got into contact with a cup of milk some weeks ago...
you can also heat it up to 50 degrees celsius in an oven...so it drys faster...
your phone is male or female ?
I carried my Dell Venue Pro in my jeans' pocket while riding my bike, it was raining quite heavily. Now it won't turn on. The indicator turned red on my battery, but the indicator on the device (on the battery slot) is still white.
When I returned home I thought the charge was down and plugged into charger still it didn't start, I used hair dryer to get all water out, didn't work either. Finally searched on the net and found that it should be sunk in large quantity of rice, still didn't work. Is there anyway to fix? If I take this phone to dell, approx how much will they charge to fix it?
Oh dear god don't power it. Take the battery out and place both in a bowl of uncooked rice. Leave it for 24 hours. This will remove all the water.
Rice trick worked, I placed in a bag of rice for 20 hours. But once again my phone turned off after 10 - 15 mins of usage.
to be safe when any electronic gets wet, take it apart as much as possible, put everything in a plastic container of rice and set it in a sunny location and leave it for as long as you can, at least 3 days a week is prime. Then after the time frame, with everything apart use a combo of compress air and a blow dryer to get rid of the small rice and then put battery back in and your good.
You might need a new battery

You can test this by plugging the phone in to the charger without a battery in. See how it works.
Monday morning before work I dropped my phone is water. It was no more than 30 secs but it got wet. I know that have to put the phone in rice for 3 days. It is now morning of day 2 and it still in the rice. I did notice last night after taking it out that is turns on but the touch screen is acting weird but I am still going to leave it in the rice and check it tonight. I have a friend who can replace the screen but I only had it a month and hoping that it just needs to dry out more.
Hey i also dropped my phone in the water and my screen acting strange, you must put your mobile in the Air tight kinda bag filled with uncooked rice or silica gel and leave your mobile for 3 days...after three days your mobile fixed!
Press thanks if it help.
Silica Gel is way better. And most important! KEEP THE PHONE SWITCHED OFF!!!
My phone was turned off the whole time. I checked it this morning and the touch screen seems a bit better but I am not 100% sure. I am going to keep it in the rice till tomorrow morning and see but the phone does power on with no problems.
