Assuming these are my main usages:
- Internet browsing.
- Messaging/email.
- Runkeeper.
- GPS navigation.
- Camera.
- Phone
Do you find that a device like the Note 3 will allow me to get things done quicker than on a regular cellphone ?
What day to day functional things can you do with the Note line that you can't do as easily with regular cellphones ?
Thanks!
Well the larger screen makes it nicer for using it to smash larger bugs.

The N3 will offer better battery life, great display for Internet, messaging, email, camera, GPS, etc. All depends what you actually want.
I have the Note 2 and I could go approximately 26-30 hours on the battery.

Ok, but the LG G2 has similar battery life to the Note 3 (if not better). And the G2 is much easier to carry than N3 (5.2" screen and only 140 grams).
What will be better with the N3 in comparison to the G2 ? the only thing I can really say is the S-Pen, the question is how much do most people do with the S-Pen ?

Unless your little its not a problem at all. And when g2 is a really nice device the lack of an sd card slot makes it a hard sell for me...I would run out of space quite fast.

No SD-card and the fact that LG usually don't get much development , makes the G2 a hard sell. I have the Optimus G Pro and I'm happy with it but I can't even get CWM on this.

One hand, You say?
What's the point of a G2? 1080p full HD... and no expandable storage. It comes with 32GB max. Between the HD package data for all games and apps, and the 13MP camera, you'll have your main storage full within a day. Meaning you won't have any space left for videos and music.
Utterly useless. A phone without expandable storage is, to me, not even worth a second thought.

Ask this question to every woman with a smartphone. Even the S3, which is the most sold phone ever, is too large for us to use comfortably with one hand.
You don't hear us complaining, do you?
I much prefer the large screen over comfortable use with one hand (which I can't above 4.3"anyway). Typing, gaming, reading, watching and drawing is much easier on a larger screen.

same here, too big for a phone to be honest..
Even SGS2 is pushing it a bit.
I though SGS1 was the perfect size for a phone
its going to be a huuuuuuuuuge device but hey some peeps will love that
it defo merges the mobile/tab world a little bit closer no doubt sat nav / movie watching / serious buisness work / picture viewing / will be excellent and fun but i would have to hold it too see how it feels in the hand etc

Indeed this is just too big for a phone and will have trouble fitting in your pocket, the current size is perfect anything more is too much, other than that it looks good but no way will be purchasing this at that size.

yeah definitely.
God when mobile phones first came out in the late 1980's they were like big bricks, as time went on the size went down and down until the arrival of the smartphone now they seem to be going up in size.
The spec is very impressive but i simply could not have a phone that size, the current size or 4.5 at the very max but not as big as this.

I know right, bigger phones are back in fashion it seems. A HD samoled seems amazing though
Our sgs2 would be perfect with HD screen!
It's such a shame..
The Nexus Prime seems like it will have a similar resolution screen, so there will be some less-niche devices with these specs from Samsung soon enough, takes a little while to miniaturise the displays with each new generation. Those of you who don't like big devices will just have to wait!
I think everyone saying this is too big for a phone aren't really seeing this for what it is - its not being marketed as a phone, its a bridging device, Samsung realise this is a niche product.
Must say I wasn't expecting the Galaxy Note, but the 5,3" WXGA super amoled plus display sure is a winner. Considering Ice Cream Sandwich is supposed to bring honeycomb and gingerbread together, I'd say that we'll definitely be seeing ICS on the Galaxy Note before it's released.
The only thing that's got me worried though is whether the Exynos at 1,4Ghz is powerful enough to power the 1280x800 screen at a pace that matches that of the SGS II.
Can't imagine calling on that big of a phone without a headphone.. isn't it a little too big to call a phone? 5.3".. Nothing like that before and a 2500 mah battery that thin?? an applause from me for samsung

Now that I have had an opportunity to play with the phone, while I will be skipping this device due the poor Yamaha DAC, which is inferior to the one onboard the Galaxy S i9000, I wonder ... is this the optimal size for a phone?
- Smaller phones, when pressed against the ear are too short, which means that the microphone is further away from the mouthpiece
- Bigger screen = better when it comes to browsing, productivity, movies, and games
- This is about as big as you would want for most pockets
- Good sized battery; battery life is respectable for an Android phone

For me it's as big as I'd feel comfortable with. It's pocketable, and with great high resolution screen. It could probably be quater of an inch smaller diagonally. Definitely more practical than some popular smartphones that don't even go beyond 3.5" diagonal. Don't see any point in that...
Honestly, after a week or so, I'm thinking I could go even bigger (5.8"). The Note's size is very user friendly and pocketable for me.

It would depend on your pocket size.
This phone is getting bad press for its size.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
For a phone? Doesn't matter - you're not staring at a screen when taking a call after all.
As a computing/entertainment device? Yes it does seem like a good size. Playing games on a 5.3" screen is noticeably more immersive than even a 4.3" screen.
Ultimately it depends on your preference. Personally after almost two weeks with the phone I've grown quite comfortable with the size of it, even though I have relatively small hands. Yes it's not something you'd wanna use one-handed, but otherwise this size is quite acceptable for the massive screen
I noticed I can do a lot more now with this phone. Looking up things on the road, reading a map, jotting down a note, gathering some info and paste it in a note... seems to be (finally) a very natural thing to do with this phone. This size seems just to be right for me.
Another aspect of the size might be the "social acceptability". I think in this time, that's not an issue anymore. It is as pocketable as a pack of cigarettes a few decades ago LoL
I dont think this is the optimal size, it is for me but i cant imagine a small girl using this phone, it would probably look stupid and be uncomfortable for them. My coworker who is about 5'2 looks ridiculous when she holds the phone.
I do not have any issue with the size as far as portability goes. None of my friends or co-workers have commented on the size of the device in a negative way. I few of them wanted to put it in their pockets to test the portability for themselves.
Optimal size, I would have to say no. I love the huge screen, but sometimes my hand starts to get tired like when I'm holding my iPad for extended periods, I even have much larger hands than the average person.
So not the optimal size, but it is the size I desire. I think the S2 is the optimal size.
I use as a phone (and it fits in all my pockets) the 7" Galaxy Tab.
The way I see it, as long as it's pocketable it's a good size.
I agree, I would be excited if the Note 2 was 5.8
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
My opinion for optimal size is 4.5-5". Anything in between.
Then you go either too big/heavy for long periods or you go "smaller"(btw come on, 4.3 is not small, we are just spoiled) which is the minimum today for smartphone enthusiasts that wan't a big screen. Just my 0.02c.

The Note 2’s 5.5-inch whopper of a screen is simply too big to compose a message single handed. I’m not talking about comfort or convenience here—the task is absolutely impossible, even for a semi-large handed individual like myself.

Firstly, that's not even true. You can use continuous input (swyping) with a single hand just fine. OR, use one-handed operation feature.
My Note 2 loses less than 0.50% per hour overnight.
Sure, the screen is really big. That's why we bought it. I didn't buy my phone to use it one handed all the time. I know what it's like to use a big phone, so I adjusted.
The DNA cannot touch the battery life of the Note 2, which was important to me. When the DNA dies, I'll be chugging along happily with my phone.
haha DNA is suck - Sense sucks ( still stutter even with s4 pro cpu and 2GB ram ) - battery is too small for 1080p screen - crappy camera - no global version
that a joke from HTC

Sure it's true. I'm one of the Note 2's biggest fans, but I tell -everyone- that they shouldn't expect it to use it one handed.
Lots of people don't use the stock keyboard. That means the one handed option is useless for them.
I have quite large hands, and I find doing lots of tasks one handed simply awkward and annoying.
- Frank
I do not believe people buy this phone expecting to use it one handed and more than one expects to use it with gloves on..
. I Did not use my N97 one handed with a physical keyboard!
As far as battery life, it is a non issue for me. Its better than any Samsung galaxy I have had and i don't ration use, keep the screen bright, and charge every night with over 50% remaining. I eliminated all my battery saving settings and apks. This has amazing battery life for it's size.
That said, I don't have or play games on it, stream music, or watch movies. Its a phone, radio, SD card based music player and internet device for me.
I dunno, maybe it's just me, but if I have an absolutely urgent (read: important) email to send as the author described, I'm not going to one-hand it regardless of the device. I'm going to find a quiet corner of the subway, bang it out with 2 thumbs or Swype, re-read it for errors, hit Send, and carry on.
But maybe that's just me.

it's not true. The author of the article used an absolute. he said it was impossible. the fact of the matter is that there's 2 solutions. The point you made that people might not use those 2 solutions is moot as it was their choice to ignore solutions. they chose to make it impossible.

Well, I agree that making ANY sort of absolute statement is generally wrong.
Everything is a shade of grey - it depends on what you want to do, and what your tolerance is in terms of how it should be done.
Most reviewers fail to consider that other people don't necessarily do things the way they do.
They said this all the time for note 1 reviews, but they are a lot better with the note 2, since the note 1 sold so well.
I don't think it can be argued that going to a larger phone may make it impossible to do something you previously used to/like to do.
This is the main (and perhaps only) major adjustment going to the Note 2.

This is getting Off topic, so I won't dwell on this, but there's a lot of keyboards besides swiftkey, and I rarely (if ever) see one-handed options on any of them.
Side note - I have been trying swiftkey flow, and you can seriously use that with one hand? There's no way in hell I can.
Not without dropping my phone. YMMV I guess.
- Frank
I type, or better yet, swype, with one hand daily. This is another thing that I was getting at. Not everyone has the same hand sizes. hell, samsung used LeBron James to promote this phone in the US. There is no reason to use absolute statements if you're a tech blog writer doing a review on a phone.
To give you an idea, I can palm a basketball.
That comparison isn't relevant to the international N2(s). VZW is a CDMA carrier, not GSM. CDMA is much rougher on battery life when the signal's weak. My battery life at idle on the N2 is as good or better than the Teg3 One X it replaced.
The editors and people commenting on that site are Nexus 'purists'. They can't really appreciate the additions that are present in the N2 builds as well as software-hardware synthesis. They will always complain about the size and pull out arguments out their as ses that make no sense. Let them write whatever they want. Note 2 is the granddaddy of all handheld devices on our planet and nothing will change that unless Note 3 comes out with an even better spec. EOT. No point in wasting time on reading lame reviews from lame editors on lame sites.
The Note II is probably one of best all round phones around in terms of ability, battery life, camera, but try as I might (for 6 months) I've finally found that the size irritates me. It's too big as a phone for my usage, but not really big enough as a tablet.
Hence, I'm moving on.
The question is, if you were me, what would you move on to (I'm looking for inspiration) ?
In February you had a Nexus 4 (at least according to your posting history). (Ah, I see you own both a Nexus and a N2.)
There's a comparison thread if you want to compare devices. However I've always been boggled by the XDA threads where people post IN an enthusiast area that they don't like that phone.

'Normal' is relative.
His point is, people who browse this forum probably own the Note 2, and probably like it for the reasons that you don't.
So asking our opinions on what you want is kind of pointless. I personally won't even look at a phone unless the screen is at least 5".
First thing I'd recommend is figuring out exactly what size of a phone suits you based on what you want to do,
and how/when you want to do it.
There are lots of phones with better specs. I think most of the Note II users like me love it for the screen plus the battery life along with the feature loaded beast that it is. S Pen is just an icing, obviously.
HTC One seems nice - some users do manage to get like ~7 hrs on screen time with battery saving tweaks etc (although I wouldn't expect it to be anywhere near that on moderate-heavy usage). Or obviously the S4. Do some research and pick what suits you the best, as ultimately it all boils down to personal preference
Personally, can't think of switching to anything <5.5'', but hey, to each his/her own.

anyway... just go for 4" phone its kind of normal fit in palm... got several that fit into that category and its kind of nice hardware too... and if you are at XDA... then i dont think you will use stock firmware... go CM for good battery life...
S4 seems obvious. With a 2600mah battery plus the reduced power consumption of the new oled screen technology and octal cpu, then battery life should still be excellent.

My wife says bigger is better. (I hope she talks about the phone)
it does seem strange that you have a Note2 and yet are complaining about the things which to other people make it great. I make maybe one voice call every other day.
a Note mini would suit many people at 5" or smaller. some people are eager for the Note 8".
the best thing to do is to go to a phone shop and play with the device before buying, a review will only tell you so much.
personally, I find the Note2 at the limit of useable size for my hands, but I have slightly smaller hands than average for a european 6 foot male. I still wouldn't swap it for anything else, unless there was a keyboarded slider device of at least 5" display with 720p or better.
If the rumours are correct Samsung will release 5,8 and 6,3 inch devices soon (Grand). For me 5,5 to 5.8 inch is the limit atm.

You don't say what would be a good size for you, you don't say why you chose the Note II and what you like and/or not like about it (dimensions aside) so your post seemed more of a trolling than a genuine question...
Anyway, if the only problem you have with the Note II is its size but you more or less like everything else the answer should be pretty obvious: get an S IV.
Too big? Get an S III.
Still too big? You are looking for a toy then, not for a smartphone.
BTW, I have the opposite problem: I find the Note II too small and am eagerly waiting for a bigger Note III.
I have owned an OG Note for 15 months and had been arguing that the Note II was a step in the wrong direction with its 16:9 aspect ratio and a NARROWER screen (80 pixel less are also noticeable). The Note II is way better than the Note in just about EVERYTHING (display quality included) BUT the screen dimensions!! 16:10 5.3" is superior, IMO, to 5.5" 16:9.
I held off upgrading for several months for this very reason but the 2 GB RAM finally did it for me and in the end I am happy to have upgraded but still disappointed by the display dimensions...
My ideal smartphone display dimensions are 6.3"/6.5", any bigger and I couldn't carry it where I usually carry my smartphones (jeans back pocket, fanny pack, jacket pocket). That's what separates smartphones from tablets, to me (like a label would matter anyway...).
I'd suggest the HTC One. Absolutely stunning looking phone.
Either the s4 or the HTC one. I was thinking about the HTC one but the battery size and screen size put me off. But I can easily deal with a 5 inch phone, but no smaller. That's for my taste though. Maybe the blackberry z10 If you're into trying new devices.

Even more retarded
is the 805 a lot better then the 801? I mean even with the gpu bump in real world it cant be that much of a difference.

depends on what you consider "a lot better". The 805 would be a nice bump in battery life and would make things snappier with a QHD screen. Would also see improvement in gaming. Im sure if the G3 came with the 805 people would be complaining less about the battery life. Also it really depends on how the software is utilized with the 805 to see real differences. Considering how bloated touchwiz is i doubt itd feel like a huge difference in performance.

+1 And then compare the price!!!!
I completely agree. I almost passed on the G3 to wait for the Note 4, but I'm glad I didn't. If I had, I'd be going to get the G3 today.
The Note Edge looks like it will be a complete nightmare for case makers or anyone that is prone to dropping their phone.

IMO the biggest improvement, beside GPU, is faster memory (2x900mHz, if I recall correctly)

That too. In a world full of useless gimmicks, I think Samsung just took the cake with this one...
I quite like the note 4. Just wish they changed the design a bit more, flush back camera and got rid of the physical home button.
I too had a lot of thoughts if I chose poorly by buying the G3 instead of waiting for the note 4 (speaking as a previous note 2 owner)
But c'mon there is nothing special about the note 4...legendary battery life on the note serious?
The note 4 had a 3200mAh battery(Same as the note3) and it will sip the juice more than ever thanks to the 2k screen..so no longer "legendary" battery life...it left with the note 2
Camera? Though I rarely use my phone for photos ( Prefer my much more loved Nikon D7000 )..but the G3 does it all and well.. i do occasionally take some photos in case I don't have my photography gear with me
And the results are pretty good for a phone...
Software?please keep me away from TW
S Pen? I rarely used it with my note 2
CPU / GPU bump? I don't use phone for intense gaming or so...and I believe the 801 SoC is more than enough
I though miss the AMOLED display :\
In a nutshell..I'm perfectly happy with the G3..Although I wish for AOSP Rom for the G3

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed
I kind of miss physical buttons. or those capacitive ones on the one plus one. with the option to have either.
You are right about the note 4 being a big disappointment but it's it's better than the G3 lol

Yeah ill get an edge
Well.. I keep wondering what exactly more people want from a smartphone.
How different can it be? If Samsung increases the size, it looses it's pocket-ability and market share. If they use even more premium materials, it becomes fragile (glass) and weight increases. These would be downgrades.
Design: It's basically a block with a huge screen. There's not many ways you can re-design that. Samsung did add metal to the edges to give a premium feel without weight increases and I think they have done a decent job at that. Remove the front buttons? Sure.. I'm sure many support the idea. But don't forget.. it's Samsung's signature design to have a centre physical button and many people buy Samsung because of that. Just like how Apple has their round button. The advantage is that you get more screen space too.
The dimpled back of the S5 received more negativity and they decided to keep the faux leather texture from N3. Nothing wrong about it. Miles better than glossy materials imho.
Internals: The CPU bump from 800 2.3Ghz to 805 2.7GHhz is very decent. You can't find anything better out there now (maybe except the NV's K1). A 64bit CPU won't do the end-user any good at this point. The screen bump from FHD to QHD is also expected and goes very nicely with the big screen. However, I have to admit that the curved screen edges are kinda sucky, esp if you're gonna apply an SP.
Software: Seriously.. I think the new screen grab function is very neat. No need saving individual pics or text before sharing. The photo taking from notes and handwriting detection is pretty nifty.. not to mention it does keystone correction! Also, a screen grab of a bunch of text will end up as ASCII when you paste it. It does OCR on the fly. Multi tasking is a step closer to windows-like. These are real new features.. not gimmicks unlike the smart-stay, smart-wave, smart hover or whatever.
In summary, I am pretty pleased with the Note4's offering. Beware, I am not a Samsung fanboy. The S5 was a crappy upgrade from the S4, being bigger, uglier and all.. but I would say the Note4 is a decent upgrade from Note3. :good:
Will I be switching to N4? No. I don't need the stylus nor the bigger screen size. Not needing such a device doesn't mean it's bad :silly:
Cheers!
After having a G2 and Flex which I liked both phones a lot I was going to wait for the Note 4. I just wanted something different. I played with a G3 and had to get it. So I'm glad I didn't wait for Note 4. Have a Jump to use and might try iPhone 6 though. Lol
Maybe if Samsung stopped downgrading devices at the same time.
The Note 4 is slightly taller and heavier than the Note 3
They removed USB 3.0 and went back with USB 2.0
The speaker is now on the back instead of the bottom
I agree that there is only so much that can be done, but look at the G3 for instance. They made the bezels as thin as possible compared to other phones, since it's not water resistant like the S5 I don't know what their excuse is for not making the bezels smaller. The battery is basically the same size, every other Note model has had a significant improvement in battery capacity, plus with QHD it's going to be worse just like the G3 is to the G2.
Overall Samsung makes a device that has good specs, but in a shell that is not pleasing to look at and easy to forget, with an OS that is full of so many half-baked features that since they don't work consistently, no one ever uses them. They need to get some new design engineers and take a page out of Apple's attention to every little detail, and either fix or remove most of their features so they actually work.
