what are your ram usage?
Mine is currently hovering at 1.44GB with 375MB

I usually have 1 GB with 850 MB free. I uninstalled a lot of bloat though and I reboot the phone sometimes to clear the ram, it only takes like 30 seconds for a full reboot.
Not sure of the efficacy of this thread, it will vary throughout usage. Mine varies between 100-600ish.
My S4 with 800 free still isn't as buttery.

Is 30 seconds a close estimate, or just a guess? I booted one up in the Verizon store today, and it started in about 10 seconds.

I said reboot though! It takes a bit longer than 10 seconds. But yes it was a close estimate.
Mine is around a gig used, but similar to others, I froze a lot of bloat after rooting. The apps that I have and don't care for it running when I'm not actively using it (I.e. Facebook), I used greenify to further limit unwanted background processes.

Here's a pro tip. In the widgets section there is a built in ram "cleaner". Put it on one of your home pages and press "clear ram". NOw I wish this thing has 3GB of ram.

I am using a motorola defy + on stock rom.My phone has a hardware of 512 mb ram...but only 475 mb or so is available..and when the phone is running...i am without even any games..or big applications or softwares..the amount of free ram available is only 30-40 mb or so..out of the 475 mb..440 mb gets used up by the phone itself..
i run swiftkey and go sms and go launcher always..I also run a live wall paper..i use a app called ram booster for clearing up ram but the constant auto boost keeps lowering down my battery very fast..nowadays.i get only 24 hours of battery on normal use. ..previously the phone would run for 2 days
The low availability of my ram makes my phone lag and I cant play games as the phone tends to hang.please help me with a good solution for clearing up or increasing the availibility of free ram!!

I have a green lens Defy. When I installed CM7.2 Stable build, the total RAM available was shown as 395 or 400 (dont remember the exact value). I checked in "manage applications> Running". But when I installed CM10 (18th Oct build), the total RAM available was shown as 475. Did anyone face this issue in CM7.2?

Can u tell what are the changes that needs to be done to get more free RAM and to improve the battery life?
I'm using CM7 by maniac, and there are 171MB of free RAM (running 14 apps).
I do not recommend the use of task killers, instead try changing the mim_free values using Auto Memory Manager.
i just flashed my defy + with cm9 Quarx...it was succesful and am now enjoying ics..please tell about the bugs in cm9
and the process of going back to stock rom!
Hey guys, what's normal ram usage for you?
Cause to me, what I'm getting seems higher than it should be.
I'm seeing well in excess of a gigabytes used when I'm not doing anything on it, even after I first restart, there's around a gig used. I removed apps I don't use, I'm running the latest release of PACrom, here's a screenshot I just took.

Also battery usage always seems high, could that be related possibly?

Yeah, that's normal.Mine is using 1 gib and I don't have any apps running.

My run is AOSP based, and according to the settings, the screen uses most of it.
But I rarely have the brightness up high, and often battery widget says I'm using in excess of 1300mah D:

I'm using stock ROM with Deodexed and Zipaligned apps, My RAM is 0.8GB when no apps is opened, and it goes to 1GB when few apps are opened
That is NOT NORMAL AT ALL... Using aosp based Roms like pacman and slim bean I have an average of 400mb used and like 1.4 free... I don't think I've ever passed 800mb running an aosp ROM or any ROM for a matter a fact... Check to male sure it doesn't count cached apps cause that takes up around a gig sometimes...
..... its normal if you have some widget running....

There is no reason to care about ram usage on a Linux system.
In Linux, unused ram is wasted ram.
Using all your ram doesn't mean no more ram is available. It means that the system is storing everything its done recently in ram so its more quickly accessed if you try to use it again. If your ram is full and you need to do something else the system will effectively and efficiently push the lowest priority task out of ram to free up more for the new task.
Using all your ram does NOT slow the system down. It is not like Windows where freeing up ram makes everything run faster.
All this monitoring ram is pointless in a Linux based OS.

I fully agree with your clear explanations but in my case when I reach low memory level like 100 Mg the camera doesn't fully start (black window).
I am forced to reboot or clean as well.
I feel something is weird in this phone memory managment. (GT9500 model for me)

Best answer ive seen c:
This takes me to my other question of could this be affecting battery life ?
Ive had the battery go from 100% down to 85% in a space of 20 minutes, with brightness on auto, and only using one app (LINE) :c
I remembered seeing other peoples comments on using only a few hundred meg of ram, and also seeing compliments on the battery life of the rom (PACrom) around those same posts, So im trying to figure out how to prolong my battery life as its pretty important to me, I dont really get a chance to charge throughout the day D:

Will do!
I was a Note 2 user and decided to switch to the new Note 3 the 3G version. After 2 days usage I ran into a strange problem, my device starts booting with a 1.7GB or ram used out of 2.66. After opening two or three applications (facebook , chrome, twitter) I end up with a 2.3GB ram. My device stops to responds afterwards randomly and I have to end task anything to gain control again, no touch screen responds. Sometimes the device also shows lag in shfting between menus and I check the Ram usage to find out I'm running out of Ram. I never faced any problems with RAM usage in Note 2 and never had the hassle to empty my Ram. I need to know if some program is sucking my RAM to death, how can I find out this? Is this a normal practice that Ram usage is like that? I checked my Note 2 and found that it starts with only 400MB usage!!.
Try closing all your tabs manually on any browsers you've used. Usually speeds up my Note 3, I've had 30-40 windows open before, seems they have upped the tab limit.
still same problem
I have no tabs open, the mobile starts to stop responding randomly... I'm feeling frustrated , can you give me names of programs that can show me the RAM usage?
Please post your current ram usage just after restarting the phone

Nothing to worry man. My current ram usage= 2.45/2.66. Still no hint of lag what so ever. IT will remain like this.

I'm facing stops and lags whenever I reach this number, my Old phone used to comsume less RAM. The phone randomly stops responding and I have to end the process to gain control again. I happens with any program( not a certain program causing this problem)
Does this mean the phone is faulty and I have to replace?
Are there any test that you recommend?
I thinK i faced this problem after the latest OTA update

because your phones model is sm-n9005 and this model has 2.38 free ram and the system use only about 1 gig
but in sm-n900 model the free ram is 2.66 but the system use about 1.3 of it
so actually both of them are the same

You will have to remove the bloat then or you can go to setting and check "Don't keep the activities". THis will not fill the ram at all but then if you minimize an app, it will be closed. This is the logic of android. The high ram usage is due to apps being stayed in the memory.
I also used note 2 for a year and I agree it wasn't the same. More ram means samsung has added more ram hungry apps.

The system becomes unstable after reaching 2.48 out of 2.66 usage
I need to know what is draining my memory
When I do a clear memory
I get 1.66 out of 2.66
Then without even touching the phone my ram usage starts rising till 2.1 gbs
Am I completely ruined?
Is there a solution
go to development option and scroll down and click dont keep activity
I did what you have recommended but still my device stops reponding

Yep it's firmware issue, which firmware you on..?
Can anyone of you download advance task killer from the android market/Google Play. Download and could you check how many memory do you have? When I bought my note, I had only 40% of memory available on my phone, which means about 800 MB, and I couldn't take advantage the rest of the 2+GB memory because phone has couple hundred apps preinstalled... Now I started clearing and un installing all these unnecessary apps and now I have about 1.6 GB memory available on my phone, and as a result of that I was able to get two days battery every day. Basically I can't finish my battery in one day regardless of the usage, which is really good....

I haven't tried the app but I also have been using FK ver 5. I haven't had my note 4 long enough without a custom rom to know the difference in battery duration between stock and FK.
Also greenify is a man's best friend when it comes to Android.. It hibernates apps just like a task killer but not killing them out which does the complete opposite..

Love the battery life. Usually i end up with about 50 to 60 percent after work. And im constantly on a call. I actually don't use any battery or task management apps. Stock rooted. Here's what I got last couple days.

Your phone was not on battery for 2+ days. You charged the device partway through and the stats didn't reset.
Yeah, I see the chart does go up at one point. I wonder why it says I was off for almost 3 days then. I was like damn thats a lot.

You probably charged it to somewhere in the 80's. The battery stats don't reset unless it is charged to 90% or above.

Please Please dont waste your time with task killers. You do not need them. Why do you think they are not included in any of these awesome ROMS ? If you have 1.6GB of free memory of RAM available on your phone you are doing pretty damn good. With everything closed I have 1.85/2.72 GB of RAM . You do not need a task killer to tell u that. Just tap the icon on the left next to the close all button when you have recent apps open. By the way I get 2days of battery even if I leave most of my apps open or in RAM. What counts is if your phone is deep sleeping while the screen is off. Use cpu-spy its a great app to monitor whether your phone is deep sleeping or not. I get great battery life no matter what rom I am on and even if its Stock by maintaining that its actually in deep sleep while turning the phone off. For real though without having Ultra Power Saving mode on the best you will get while at IDLE is about .05% an hour maybe a little better in some cases . A half a percent an hour is 200hours battery life at Idle.

Just got a new s6 edge+ and absolutely blown away with the phone as a whole.
Only problem/issue is the RAM usage. I'm a light user for 90% of the day and i have barely any apps installed, yet the RAM is always above 50% even when all apps are closed and i 'clean' the RAM. Average RAM usage is 75%. 3GB?!?
Is this normal to all other users? My thought are that it could be a false reading. Or that it could be dummy using RAM and reassigns it to wherever needs it when any high usage apps run.
I am a UK user and the only update applied was a carrier pushed update. (E.g. i havent done any updates myself or messed around with the phone).
Attached is a screenshot of my kernal and baseband versions for anyone interest.
Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks, Zack.
I see the same on my SM-G9827 phone. It opens around 30 apps in background. If you clean them regularly it kills the battery. Its better to leave them like that.I am getting 6 hours SOT with 3 % left if i leave them as it it.
Ram is ment to be used. To make apps open fast when you need them. A lot of free ram does not make your phone faster AFAIK. So keep those apps running and enjoy a fast phone!

I agree.
RAM is meant to be used, you've got 4GB of it. The OS has been optimised to kill any processes that haven't been used if memory is filling up. Forget about saving RAM and focus on enjoying the device.
