As I do not have the unlimited sms plan, is there anyway for me to send sms by default with the GV program instead of having to go into GV every time to send sms? Is there a program I can download that will sync with GV? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

yes, you can do this with GV
swipe to the left on a contact and it should ask you what you want to use as your default texting program.
if it doesnt, go into settings, manage applications and set it

There is an app that I use to txt friends that do not have unlimited txt as I do, it's an app called TextPlus its in the Market. It does not link to GV but it does not give out your "real" phone number. You may be familiar with it already as it is a pretty popular app but like I said it does not link to your GV account but I thought this may help you till you find one or something. Good luck.
thanks for the help. I guess the program that I really want is an sms program that is capable of hooking up with GV. Although I already did Andy's method, I don't really like how GV's GUI is not so great with SMS.
Try using "Voice" it's actually by google and it's in the market, I think this is exactly what you are looking for. You can also set it up to be your voicemail client for your actual cell phone so it is more intra-grated.

It sure sounds like the OP already has the "Google Voice" application. I believe what he is looking for is an application kind of like Handcent SMS or Chomp SMS but it doesn't use the carrier's # and instead it sends the text from the Google Voice # so he could get free unlimited texting.
Yes that is exactly what I am looking for. Maybe its still an non existent program.

I wish there were one. As you said the GV UI is not very good. Infact even the UI for text on GV web site is not great... No clue why texts from one contact sometime makes a new thread, makes it hard to follow compared to most text apps
I'm new to the android, mostly I like it, but there is one thing that is driving me nuts. I don't know if I'm missing something or stupid or what.
There are a number of times I have gotten to my list of contacts - i.e. from Google Maps defining a location to navigate to, or creating a shortcut to a contact- that I get presented with a list of all my contacts (1500+) and no apparent way to search the list.
If I press the search button it brings up the contact search, but then I seem to have lost the app that wanted the contact. Is there a way to do a search on the contacts and then have it get entered into the original app? I also tried google gesture search, which was great, but I can't figure out how to do anything with the contact other than call them.
I'm beginning to think I am dense or something, please help.
if i understand correctly, i think you want to navigate to a specific contact's address from google maps?
if so, all you need to do is, while in google maps, in the destination field just type the contacts name. and if you have their address saved in your contacts it should just pop up with their address.
For maps tha'ts great, I must remember not to rush things at traffic lights.
However, the thing I am still having trouble with is creating direct dial shortcuts. I go to create the shortcut, and get a long list of contacts and A-Z on the right. I can pick a letter, but there are still hundreds of phone numbers to go through. There is no search box available at that point - I tried pushing the search button and it searches the contact list, but then all I can do is call the contact, not create a shortcut. I tried BetterCut and it doesn't have the A-Z selector.
Am i missing something here too?
This is the problem of not having a physical keyboard. And not having gestures in all lists. What you are doing is exactly what I want to do many times and there is unfortunately no way around it except scrolling up and down a list. Very annoying idiom started by the iPhone and unfortunately copied by Android. There is simply no way to filter lists unless every list is accompanied by a filter text field.
I am looking for an application that allows me to quickly access the search of contacts.
Normally I use a sense rom which has the htc dialer. Great because I hit the dialer. Do a abbreviated search then phone, txt or email from there.
Problem with Cynogen rom which I am trying its a pain. Click contacts, Options, Search then I can search
Is there an market app that can shorten this?
Having the num keypad is also great
Have a play with this dialler and see if it helps...

or try "Dialer One" on the Market
On my Nexus 4, when I'm creating a text message, how do I insert a phone number from one of my existing contacts into the text message. I could do this on all my old Nokia or Samsung phones (Non smart phones) but can't see how to do it.
Also, is it possible to send one text to more than one contact at the same time. Or at the least can I foward an existing text message to another contact? Again i could do this on my old phones but can't see how to do it on this one
It just seems that the texting functionality on this phone is really basic. Not sure if I can use an app which has more functionality?
Thx

For your first item, I'm not sure that I'm completely understanding. If you start typing a person's name or phone number into the To field it will search through your contacts and pull up any matches. Is that not what you're looking for?
To send a text to more than one person, click back into the To field and then start typing again to bring up another contact. You can also forward and existing message by longpressing (press and hold) on the message and tapping on Forward.
If that doesn't meet your needs, there are plenty of alternative SMS apps. GoSMS, Handcent, etc... provide some extra functionality.
Open your contacts.
Find the one you want the number for.
Long press on the tel number
choose copy to clipboard
Now in the messaging app just long press in the text box where it's inserting what you write
paste
