Installing a new ROM - what will be the consequences?

I'm new to this messing with my xda stuff and I have read most of the forums topics and was just wondering from what I have seen if :-
1) If Jeff's Kitchen is dead? (12:30am 24-09-03)
2) If I can obtain a ROM or if Jeff's kitchen is not dead?
3) What if any are the consequences of installing a new ROM? Has anyone experienced a fatal problem with doing this?
4) How do I check what version I currently have and what is the version I must have before installing a new ROM?
5) Is there anyway to display a webpage in landscape rather than stoopid portrait all the time and in full screen i.e. tool bars etc hidden just like in Windows Media player?

Go to Start, Settings, System, Device Information.
Also any and all versions are upgradeable so don't worry about that!
I'll somebody else answer the remaining four.

I just recently got his phone and i was wondering What is a rom, what does it do and how do you get a new one. What would be the point of getting a new one?
I also was wondering if anybody had any great freeware that combined a bunch of programs into one. Im looking for a simple battery meter (im using LvmTopBat)
I need a program for AIM other than octro talk, I Also need one for threaded messaging. I was using Palm_threaded_SMS but it had some glitches on my phone. I was usuing Minimo but it seemed to freeze alot so does anybody know of any good tabbed browing web browsers? i also wanted a program to free up any unused memory on my phone. Is Oxios Memory anygood?
And if anybody has used UI Tweaker Could anyone explain to me what each selection so i know what im changing the color of. Thanks for any help i get.

Custom ROMs are usually a lot more stable and perform much better in different aspects. There are programs for almost anything, you just need to search for them

if you install the latest DCD rom 3.2.5 and radio 3.42.50... you will have threaded SMS. It also allows you to use the internal GPS. Go to the upgrades forum... and READ! The WIKI on how to is in my signature as well as links to the latest rom and radio. Good luck!

the wki how to link does not seem to work and i read a bit about this new rom and multiple people have said its slower than stock. also what is rev-a. does that have something to do with free tethering? sorry if this is a stupid question. Im just really new to all this.

also what is the differnce between the rom and the kitchen. I notice there are two downloads. if anybody has the time or can tell me how to do it real quick i would just like a step by step on how to install this rom. Do i need to do a hard reset?

The kitchen is used to cook the ROM. The ROM is what you install on the device. First install hardspl on the device and then run the ROM of your liking. After the flash, be sure to perform a hard reset.

This wiki... Titan Recent should explain it all. It is step by step. The only thing you may have to substitute... if it hasn't been updated is the correct files. IE... 3.42.50 radio... and 3.2.5 rom. The kitchen allows you to select different programs that DCD didn't include in the ROM. If you download the kitchen, you can leave it alone... run BuildNB.bat and just "Play" that... and it will work the same as the ROM that DCD made for everyone to use.

Touchflo3D : is the new version available ?

I had the occasion to watch a video showing the new Touchflo running on a Touch HD (the one with built-in calendar and new contacts screens).
Is this version available for download and install ?
Sorry if I asked a stupid question, I looked for the information but did not find anything about that

You can just flash a rom, which contains this new version. Look in the ROM development forum in order to get more information.

So I guess there is no "standalone" installation for this TF3D version, so I can just replace the current one without flashing ?

That would be the ideal for those who prefer the new 1.56 official rom! (including me)
I find the new rom perfect for my needs but i would also like to use the new manilla!

what's the problem flashing a custom-rom?

Duttys Xtreme v3 ROM is both of those things.

New to HTC Mega

heya guys.
i just bought myself a new Mega last week, and i kinda wondering can you guys recommend which ROM should i pick to flash it? i browsed the ROM section but i don't know which one i should pick. and some of the roms are filled with programs that i don't even know of. which is why i ask for your recommendations.

Hello, think that you have to ask yourself why you want to change the stock ROM? Not happy with it? What do you want to see improved? Do you want a lite version or full version?
Ideally you try a few of them and see which one you like best. But first of all would read the posts with the various Rom's so you have an idea what they offer.
Personally can recommend the Rom of Billabongstaff which I use myself. Also read the "new to Rom's" thread.

i've explored every thread about roms on HTC Mega but i can't seem to find any suitable roms that i really want to use. there's a few nice ones but i don't even know some of the programs installed in that roms. so i need someone to answers me these questions so that i could decide which roms that i should flash.
1. My HTC mega version is
ROM: 1.28.707.3 (66092)
Radio Version : 3.49.25.05
WinMo : 6.5 Pro (build 21854.5.0.80)
Is this an old rom version? Should i upgrade it or stick with it?
2. If i should upgrade it, can i flash 6.5.5 rom onto my phone? what's the difference with original 6.5?
3. If i should stick with it, can anyone suggest what good programs that i may install to this phone? so far i only find SPB Shell and Facebook that's good enough for me.

Amienzero, would be nice if that is available but do not expect a resume of all Rom's for Mega....
1 If you can not decide on a Rom because you do not know the programs used than the search function can help you so it becomes quickly clear what they are about.
2 The Rom you have is pretty new for 6.5. You can upgrade to built 21912 (or 21909 in custom Rom) but do not expect a lot of difference.
3 WM 6.5.5 is more finger friendly than 6.5 but it is also a matter of taste.
4 To decide which program you need or like simply read about the application section in Mega or general Windows Mobile but foremost try them yourself. If you read the posts you notice a few popular ones mentioned.

okay, i've looked up about WinMo 6.5.5 and i'm interested with it. say if i use HSPL, then flash the 6.5.5 rom. then if i'm not satisfied with it i can just perform a hard reset, right? then i'll be back to the original 6.5?

No if you do hard reset, the rom won't change.
You have to install original rom again.

but now i have a new problem. i haven't flash any roms yet but now the today screen shows clock instead of battery. how can i fix that? before it shows the battery indicator but recently i did a hard reset (i messed up the touchflo2d ) and now instead of battery, it shows the time. now i got 2 clock on my today screen. please help.

Try:
Start/Settings/Clock & Alarms and uncheck the box saying 'display clock on title bar in all programs'
This should sort it

time to get back hunting clean 6.5.5 rom or wait for that android.

okay, one last question.
my mega uses qwerty input to enter text. is there a way or a program that can change the input to numpad text input? when i pressed the keyboard button in the middle, it only gave me the qwerty and input method (Pin Yin) option.

I have a Touch Pro 2 it's a european version.
I am looking for a footprints app for my touch pro 2.
Can someone help me with this?
I don't know much about the app but heard so much of it that I would like to try it.

I don't know if there is a separate cab to install it but the easiest way would be to flash a cooked ROM with the tab built in like this one from DeepShining

Yeah but the problem with all those custom roms is the following.
1. I don't know which version I should get since I don't know what all those numbers mean. like 23130, 23128 etc etc.
2. I never flashed a phone before and I really don't want to screw up my phone.
