Factory reset snafu - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey folks- I decided to do a factory reset on my device last night because it was getting twitchy and had a hard time installing jwr66y. I was under the impression that android didn't erase the SD card partition on devices like this without an SD card.
So I backed everything up with my back up pro and ran the reset. And I lost everything. My backup files were deleted and I lost all my pictures. I know, my bad for not putting those files in external storage, but I really thought that part of the internal storage wouldn't be deleted. Am I wrong? What happened here? Also, I thought Google synced all the pictures on here through Google photos.

Where did you do the factory reset from? Stock recovery & via settings will wipe the internal storage, its normal.

Not all pictures are synced automatically. You have to enable picture sync in the menu.

[Q] Factory data reset - how much manual work?

If I do a factory data reset, do I have to manually set up all my email accounts again? Gmail, Yahoo, hotmail, aol, ...
I'm also using K9 Mail and MailDroid apps to pick up mail.
I guess any launcher configuration will be gone too?

Everything that ISNT stored on your SD card will be erased. You will have to set up your accounts again. Your contacts should be linked to your Gmail account.
You can probably use an app to backup your apps then reload them. There are some that do that.

Yes. Simple as that
So I did a factory reset, and I got back almost all of my contacts. Notice one or two missing, and they weren't recently added ones too, so not sure why.
I hear that market apps should auto-restore? I had backup/restore checked under Privacy, but the apps are not restoring, and if I try to manually download, I even see my editable comment and rating on the app, which indicates that my device/account knows about the previous installation of the app.
After a manual download/install, the data doesn't restore, so I lose customized settings, etc.
Is the backup of apps/data indicated anywhere on www.google.com/dashboard ?
I do have my apps backed up to SD as .apk files using flii (previously called onthefly backup).

I did a factory reset (to activate a warranty replacement phone), and the SD card was completely erased. A call to VZW tech support and was told to remove the SD card before doing a factory reset

My factory reset did not erase SD card contents. I believe there is an option during the factory reset to erase the SD card. One needs to be careful about that check box setting.

I did a factory reset and everything got erased from the internal memory, videos,pics,mp3s,....etc.

Yes, perfectly normal. In fact, it's pretty much the definition of "factory reset,' i.e., returning the device to the state it was in when it left the factory.
Well on my G1 and on my vibrant...this didn't happened...i know what a factory reset is and do...and this is really weird...
One thing is to erase the part of the memory that the OS is using...other is to "format" the internal memory all the time I do a factory reset.
Do this mean that I have to transfer my files to the microsd before a factory reset...or I flash a custom Rom?

Is your G1 or Vibrant running some custom ROM/recovery? Some custom ROM/recovery modified the factory reset to not touch /data/media/, that'll explain why you kept your media when you reset. As for having to backup before factory reset (yes, you have to unless you root and install solarnz's modded CWM and use the factory reset on it (he disabled wiping of /data/media). For flashing custom ROM, you don't need to backup everything if the ROM won't wipe everything (read the desc of the ROM).
I'm using CWM on my vibrant but I guess Honeycomb handles the memory in a different way...like I said I totally understand that the OS is over written when I do a reset or flash another Rom..what I can't understand is why the rest of the available memory get overwritten too.
For example I have some pics and videos that was on the DCMI folder and some ebooks that I transfer from my pc and those got erased...and those were in the internal memory...anyway...got to do some restore now...

Like mentioned above, it is probably due to the version of CWM you're running on your Vibrant. If you install solarnz's CWM, it'll keep your media after wipe too.
Your Pics and Stuff that didnt get Erases before Was Probably on an External SD Card. The Transformer Reads The Internal Memory as an SD card too so you probably got confused. Anything on a SD you put in should be fine. Anything in Transformer SD card is erased.
It's a new thing with Honeycomb. Any built in storage is considered when doing a factory reset.
On 2.3 this was not the case (Nexus S for example).

How to remove photo from gallery?

I just got the S4 32gb and I gave my son my S3 I did the reset am my photo are still in the gallery. So can anyone tell me How to remove photo from gallery?
If you are talking about photos still on S3 you need to wipe the internal sd card as well. Factory reset just resets the phone unless you hit the button that says erase everhthing.

1. Factory reset. I strongly believe you can still save your mesages if you want to. Download sms backup and restore from playstore. Save the back up into external sd. Save all your contacts into sim card or export to external sd. If your phone is rooted, you can backup your installed apps using titanium backup. Remember to remove external sd before performing factory reset
2. If it doesn't work, need to reflash the firmware
You can reflash firmware first without factory reset. It can save all your data in the phone but flashing could be a messy thing to do. So i would suggest to do factory reset first

You will loose all your data. As mentioned you could make some backup into sd card. Just to be remember you must remove sd card else it would get wiped by factory reset

No it won't wipe your external sd card...
If you have a google account all your contacts are already stored there so when you log in they will be restored, as well as any apps from google play store...
SMS however are a different story...

Camera app not saving on SD Card anymore - Please help!! :(

Hi all,
I'm desperate. I just realised my camera app has suddenly started to act weird.
Basically it can't save images on SD CARD anymore as if the sdcard was write protected but it's not. I can copy/paste files without issues on the card. It feels like the camera app has some issue. It can save videos and pics without problems on internal memory but refuses to save on sdcard. I tried Camera-FV app and it can save on SD Card so I guess it's the actual camera app ....
I tried clearing data of the app, uninstalling the app with titanium backup and reflashing the rom on top of my current installation (without factory reset) and nothing works. I also tried formatting the SD CARD with both PC and Phone and unmounting/remounting...nothing
Another thing I noticed is that I can't copy files from pc to sdcard straight. I have to first pass them to phone internal memory and then using phone explorer app I can move from phone to SDCARD. Very weird behavior. It's like if the device is blocking write access to the card? I also tried another sdcard and same story.
Anyone has any other suggestion?
I have the same issue the camera app can not access the SD card.So was the app "my files".Most wire thing is ES explorer write SD card well as usual.
I'm pretty sure this issue is happening since I update the system(G9350ZHU2APE3).
Damn this sucks! It must be the update that broke the sdcard. I saw several others having the same problem. No confirmed fix yet? Must we factory reset?
