[Q] Phone keeps rebooting and cannot update PRL, Firmware (sleep of death) - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I updated my phone to a DeathStalker (MF9?) ROM and I have two constant issues:
1. I can no longer update my PRL, Profile or Firmware, etc. It keeps telling me my session is in progress and to try again later.
2. Occasionally my phone randomly reboots.
3. When I click the power button to wake the phone the phone goes into sleep of death forcing me to reboot or it doesn't wake and reboots on its own.
No idea what's causing these issues or how to fix them. I updated to Deathstalker from an old (June 2013) ROM and think it might have to do with firmware or something

could just be a bad DL try to dl the rom again and do a clean wipe and reflash.....if the issue persists try a different rom to see if its rom related (also there have been alot of issues with MF9 since its release)

You should literally ask this in the thread. You will get more help there. But if im not mistaken the developers for deathstalker took out the function to update prl and profile and also the fact that is "almost" a rom ported to our device it wouldnt have that function. Also it the reboots and death sleep could be kernel related.

Right, so this issue is not mutually exclusive to any ROM. All recent MF9 / MDL ROMs I have tried (3 in total) have this issue and so on. I've made posts about this but they sadly went unanswered
Not sure if PRL was disabled by that dev but it's a possibility
Kernel is always whatever is thrown into the ROM so I'm not sure how to proceed and nobody else appears to be having these issues.

Well that this happen when your running pure stock? If it does could be hardware problem.
Well you can just download any kernel of your choice in the original development. And just flash but make sure you make a backup and chose the right kernel. Well thats because phone handle kernels differently. It wont be the same for each phone. Just like us we wont have the same experience on each same event or changes. Get me?

MF9 has nothing to do with it. MF9 works great and updates PRL as it should. If it doesn't work in the ROM you are using than its the ROM. Usually you will find the best help for a rom related problem in the rom thread. I see you have plenty of posts to post in the development section so I would start there.

Soft reboots in Kitchen-Builds

This doesn't belong here, but my lack of writing stuff prevents me from posting this where it is supposed to be
If possible, move this post into this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1115958
So. JV5/JV9/JVO builds from kitchen with CF and HC kernels cause soft-reboots on my SGS I9000. I tested all of them by now. Tried the Talon Kernel 0.2.1 with JV5 and JV9, which caused boot-looping.
So I kept reading and found out that I was not the only one having this problem, but it seemed to be solveable by flashing a stock JVO first.
I already had Gingerbread Bootloaders, flashed JVK a while back, so I tried a few no-wipe ROMs as I mentioned above. All with the same problem. I lost connection to my cell network and it didn't come back. Somehow connected to the WiFi, I suppose. I could reproduce it by getting a GPS fix. But that was more or less related to my phone using wireless networks for positioning, which means that it switches on WiFi for just a second but without telling me.
Anyways, I thought I might have been wrong about the bootloaders being the reason to flash the stock firmware, so I did as it said: it specifically said JVO+ in the tutorial, so I went through the hassle and did the following:
- Flash an entire JVO firmware
- Reboot
(that one took a while)
- Full factory reset via dialer code
(that one took a while, too)
- reboot again, this time into bootloader, to flash a hc-speedmod kernel, to have root access and CWM
- reboot again, into CWM, to flash one of the ROMs I tried earlier
I ran back into my old trouble. So this is not an issue of the GB bootloaders or a previously installed version. The phone keeps soft-rebooting.
I re-installed the stock JVO firmware and flashed the speedmod kernel again, rooted via CWM menu and now I am just recovering my important applications via Titanium. Nothing bad happened yet, and it would have, with any of the kitchen ROMs Trust my, I almost tried them all
Nobody else wrote anything on that, so I thought I'd let you know there's no need to wipe all your data (like I did) and hope for the soft-reboots to be gone.
There's something seriously wrong there.
Anybody else having the same issues?
Cheers.
Andreas
Yep, I had a whole lot of trouble with the Kitchen JV5 release yesterday, ended up giving up and goind back to Darky's 10.1. Mine would boot, and when doing a media scan, would soft reset itself. I could get it to work eventually by powering down before media scanner completed then powering up. Bit odd - tried three builds of JV5 with different kernels but they ended up all being screwy. Ah well, will see what JVP brings...
glad to hear that I'm not the only one crazy enough to wipe his entire phone for a new (and fast) operating system.
Anyways... I am now back to my old status. Re-installed most of my apps, sync behavior, BT devices, wireless APs, etc. blayallah...
JVO with a hc speedmod kernel is by far the best and fastest ROM I have run so far.
Kitchen builds are dead to me until some of the people who ran into the same problems as I did confirm that those issues have been dealt with.
Just for your information:
- battery life seems amazing, at least regarding to the sensor. Hope it's any accurate. Had it unplugged over night and lost 22% battery life with WiFi on in a bit more than 10 hours
- it responds VERY fast, compared to any other ROM I had before
- bluetooth devices have to be set up again, for some reason my phone doesn't like my headset any longer. I can hear people talk but they can't hear me. However, the microphone does work when I use my headset for text2speech. Weird.
Anything else seems just the way it was before. Just faster.
I'd be glad to hear if someone could still help me out with the soft-reboots, if somebody else decides to use the kitchen builds either way I won't until somebody else tells me it's working now
Andreas
Why would u need to SOFT reboot ?
I don't *need* to soft-reboot. It just does that. Modem crashes, lost network connection. The phone doesn't actually entirely crash, it just restarts the network service and your phone is going to be offline.
That's a soft-reboot. No entire system crash or kernel panic, just the modem crashing.
That does happen when things are messed up
I'm having the same issue: on a JV5 and JV9 RomKitchen build with a JVO modem, as soon as I get a GPS lock, the phone soft-reboots.

guys, why dont you try the JVP v7 builds, its much better.
also, please select the default boot animation, else it will go into bootloop.
I can confirms that doing a no-wipe upgrade to JVP v7 fixed this soft-reboot issue.
Thank you for that information. I'm not in a flashing mood right now JVO is running just fine right now. Anything about JVP v7 that's worth the try?
JVO is running fine for now. So I'm not feeling like flashing everything over again.
Is there a simple way to just dump my current phone status, its ROM and everything somewhere to my harddrive and re-flash all of that over in case anything goes wrong?

its pretty much the same stuff except very good speed optimizations, 2.3.4, and few UI tweaks.
its been the same since the first gingerbread leaks. we flash it for new builds dont we
...and now it's just pissing me off. JV9 Kitchen Build. On GPS Lock I get soft reboots. What the hell?!
Trying another one now... crap. I thought That would be fixed by now.
So. Kept me busy, just to be sure: Each and every combination I tried using 2.3.3 from the kitchen caused soft-reboots on GPS fix. The phone was very fast with the Talon Kernel and Ext4 FS, but I can't live without GPS
So I tried a non-wipe install over one of the not working 2.3.3 roms.
I'm on JVP now, not as fast as Talon, so it seems, but GPS works, getting a fix at my window within 5-10 seconds, no crashes whatsoever.
So. If anybody else experiences crashes like the ones I mentioned in the opening post, I can also confirm that the JVP ROMs seem to fix the problem.

...as much as I hate talking to myself, it's still regarding the same issue, so I have to ask:
Saw the new kitchen build (JVR).
Two questions:
1. Is the soft-reboot issue finally fixed?
2. Is there a little language-switcher-button on the bottom left of the swype keyboard?
I use the JVO swype, and it has that button, and the new ones don't seem to have it any more? It's really nice if you need to switch between two languages all the time and you don't want to go into settings every time you need to switch.
Anyone know that? http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQC6orm5ZMAju2VzczB3MCbwEPeSH9yrYI6wxfdDGFCvkdpe7lQRg <- that one right here has it. Took me a long time to find that, because no swype version but JVO seems to have that feature.
I'd be glad about any answers to those two questions.

Guess that makes me crazy too
I've also been tinkering with customising ROM's myself to get to the boot-loop - getting pretty proficient at it now (guess I should read up a little more first)

Atrix keeps crashing (wifi?)

I have an ATT Atrix with 4.5.91. A couple of days ago, the Atrix started crashing 10+ times per day. It always happens if I try to turn on wifi, but happens other times too. Sometimes wifi will show error, instead of turning on. Bluetooth has been spotty as well. Any ideas? I tried reflashing 4.5.91 already.
Did you flash any ROMs? Kernels? Is phone unlocked?
Please, give more info....

Have you recently installed any apps that are using internet connection?
Install one of the firewall apps for android and monitor what's happening when you turn on the wifi.
It is unlocked with the 4.5.91 pudding + preroot sbf. I had the upgrade.zip version on it when I started experiencing the problem. I then flashed it with the 4.5.91 mentioned above to see if that would fix the issue. I have not installed any new apps recently, but some could have updated I suppose.
Just out of curiousity.. what Radio are you using?
I have never flashed the radio specifically. My baseband version is N_01.77.30P.-
I am also having this problem. I currently have stock 2.3.4 on ATT and my baseband version is N_01.77.30P. I've never rooted or unlocked my Atrix, all stock.
When I am able to turn wifi on, it will sometimes connect but only for a few seconds. Then it just reboots multiple times. If I am able to get it running, it says error by the turn on wifi option under settings. Mobile hotspot doesn't work either. If I keep wifi off, it doesn't crash.
I've tried restoring to factory settings, both through the factory data reset while the phone is on and through android recovery, but neither help. Any other ideas?
thanks

I tried that. The issue persists. I am thinking it might be hardware based.
Absolutely the same Wifi problem for me.
I'm on stock 2.2, rooted and deodexed.
Never has any wifi issues previously. And it's started for no reason.
Last program i installed was Tunein Radio and it worked fine about a day with Wifi. Not sure it's related.
Tried to restore my old cwr backup, but it's not helped.
A friend of mine had this problem with his atrix. His was stock ATT firmware never modded or unlocked. I factory reset it and problems persisted. His wouldn't connect to wifi at all. I believe it was hardware related, so if you didn't void your warranty, return it. If you did, you can ask Motorola to fix it... see what happens.
Side note: I kept the malfunctioning phone away from my functioning phone as I did not want it to get any ideas.

This happening to me now. Still no solution for this? My atrix:
System version: 4.5.91.MB860.ATT.en.US
Android version: 2.3.4
Baseband version: N_01.77.30P
Kernel version: [email protected] #2
Build number: 4.5.91
If I set the IPaddress, it wont connect. If I left the IPaddress blank, it automatically set to 192.168.1.253
Help please, thanks.
(FIX): go to wireless settings go into advanced settings. Click on sleep settings chose NEVER! Problem solved! Try it works

If I were you, I would contact at&t and see if you're still under warranty (by default motorola gives you a 1 year warranty). I have had the same shutting down issue with 3 atrixes. my 4th one is actually in the mail and should be here today (wooo... kinda). I also believe that the atrix has a very bad issue with hardware. Ive tried tons of rom, stock and others such as cyanogen, and this issue persist no matter what software you run.
I've had issues with WIFI/Radio causing regular crashing, especially when trying to switch to Airplane mode. I'm running CM7 (stable) and 77.36 radio. I've been able to resolve the problem by booting into CWM and reflashing both CM7 and the radio. Sometimes I have to reflash the radio a couple of times. Eventually it seems to take and then the Atrix is quite stable.
For me, the instability problem occurs whenever I reset the battery stats. After I perform the steps above, it seems to resolve it.
Anyway, if you're running stock, I'd recommend downloading a copy of the radio you're using and try reflashing it a couple of times via CWM before you give up on the phone.
I had the same problem. Returned mine under warranty. They told me that just the day before me they had someone come in with the same problem..
Well... started having this issue recently myself, not too sure exactly what had caused it. I had been flashing a few of NFHimself's Gobstopper's, after my phone took a nose dive (one of the screen shattering, battery flying and denting variety) and I started getting reboots. I hadn't had a chance to play with it prior to the nose dive, but I do know that I had reset the battery stats (something I DON'T normally do when flashing) so I'm hoping I can replicate the fix of radio flashing.
Right now I'm going to keep re-flashing ROM's and Radio's, so far just trying the Gobstoppers 2.2.2 and upwards as well as samcripp's Fruitcakes and this radio, I'll be sure to update if this works. Pretty sure I've voided my warranty a few times over already (unlocking, plus the shattered screen kinda shows signs of abuse) so returning isn't exactly my first idea.
I'm guessing that it would seem to be related to this battery stats issue, as my GPS seems to be working and I'm fairly certain that it is the same chip that controls GPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth. So unless it's some very specific hardware based issue, this is my best guess.
If anyone is aware of any other potential solutions to this issue, or knows of any other Bell Mobility (Canada) radios/ROM's, I'll be more than happy to try your suggestions!
I had a similar issue. My phone would crash multiple times a day. It started after att released an update. I read somewhere that it could be an app causing it so I went into taskmanager and had all apps end after use with the exclusion of pandora and navigation. Problem solved. Not sure what app was causing it but I never had a single crash/random reboot after. Phone was unhacked and the only update on it was the last official one released by att (sorry can't remember the number. I've since upgraded to a Cm7 rom).

[Q] U8800-official 2.3.5-rooted-random reboots

Updated to official 2.3.5 rooted, added back the pink screen, not done much else except installed a few apps.
Getting random reboots while phone is sleeping. Never happens while actively using phone. My phone will be on my desk and next thing I know it restarts.
Anybody else have this problem or found a solution?
I need to find out if it is the rom or something else causing the problem so I can start to troubleshoot it.

Turn OFF wifi when you're not using the phone. problem solved
If not work try this :
Goto CPU menu -> smartass v2 and make low and high cpu speed settings to 1 ghz.
This will also increase Battery life and must fix random rebooting.
Other way is clear caches and install rom again.
Loureiro:
I'll try turning off the wifi. It sounds like a highly likely solution since: 1) I've only seen my phone at home 2) I always turn wifi on at home.
Is there a specific reason why wifi is causing reboots? Maybe something I can find a fix for?
technogod:
Don't have custom kernal installed, so I can't alter the CPU parameters. Wanted to make sure the phone was stable at stock before changing the kernal.
Speaking of which, what's the most stable kernal for overclocking the 2.3 stock rom?
I'll try clearing the caches as well.
Thanks.
The wifi bug is known fault with the .35 kernel found in the official upgrade. hopefully it will be fixed next week fingers and toes crossed. I am not sure if any of the kernel dev's have found a fix yet.
Without cpu parameters, only way i am found that : clear three caches with clockwork and reinstall your rom. It's working on stock roms or custom roms. I think, this is not rom problem. There is different something. Cache clearing solves problem. Resetting problem started on my phone when i start to try other roms.
I am using miui 2.2.3 now and i will setup 2.2.10 version today. While using stock rom, i have some resetting problem. But now, my phone working without self-reset.

[Q]Sudden shutdown on 4.2.2

I am experiencing sudden shutdowns (or atleast non-responsive screen) quite often while on 4.2.2. For example, last night, the phone was at 89%. I went to sleep. When I woke up, the phone did not respond to the power button. I am not sure how long I pressed the power button (so I am not sure if I did a reboot or a boot) but the phone did not go to the lock screen, a (re)boot was required. I've had this since the day I had it (came on 4.2.1, currently running 4.2.2 stock).
When I did boot my phone back up, my battery was as indictaed in the screenshot. It was suddenly at 34%! I have no idea what causes this, but would much like to resolve this issue. I'd love to try a different kernel, but on the franco kernel (r82) I was unable to receive notifications (and thus missed alot of Whatsapp messages) unless I would actively turn on my phone with the power button.
I did google this problem but found no solution for me.
If you're using custom kernel, then post this kind of issues on kernel thread. If not then clean phone and stock reflash it.
Some mods (like the awesomeBEATS) breaks 4.2.2 so keep that in mind.

I have reflashed the custom ROM and kernel. So that can't be the issue.
I just posted this thread:

Did you get a flashing white led?
As I was very sleepy when I woke up, I'm not sure, but there could have been one, yes!
Anyone ever experienced this? Is this RMA-worthy?
Edit: Just happened again, while I was whatsapping. I turn it on standby, want to turn it on 5 minutes later and I have to reboot it...
I have this problem since 4.2.2 on the nexus 5

!!!Stop SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 FREEZING Problems!!!

Well, here is my story...
My cell phone is a Samsung Galaxy S3 mod. GT-I9300. Locked for Digitel (Venezuela mobile carrier). Android Stock Rom version: 4.1.2.
Preamble:
I bought this cellular a year ago, and it worked flawlessly almost for 12 months straight. I haven't experienced any single freezing or rebooting problem. I downloaded KIES and the program detected that a new version of Android was available for downloading for my phone. Bump! Error. I should have backed up my EFS first before doing the upgrading. BACKUP YOURS, IMPORTANT!)
NOTE: Backup your personal data as well since any ROM installation will remove for sure your personal data and info.
After upgrading and a few days later, my cellphone started to act somewhat funny. I started to got some freezing. To be specifically, my phone started to freeze, the screen just froze and nothing happened when I touched the screen, pressed any button. The only thing worked was to restart the cell (by pressing and holding the POWER button or by removing the batteries). Anyway, the freaking freezing problems continue occurring.
By the way, the warranty expired just a few days ago...
Since I couldn't do anything to stop the freezing problems, I decided to root the cell and install a new version of Android not official for Samsung and test its performance. But before that, I factory reset my cellphone, but it didn't work at all.
I tested several Android version I could find on internet: cm-11-20140....-i9300.zip, specifically, the SNAPSHOT, STABLE, NIGHTLY version. None of that worked, I also tested the cm-10-20... without luck. In fact, the freezing problems with those versions got worse and worse.
Taking the above in consideration, I decided to re-install the stock rom version (ver. 4.1.0) the one that was shipped with my phone when I bought it. You can find these version for any carrier in the world at: sammobile
I flashed and I used it for almost a day or so. During that period of time, I could feel that the freezing issues were gone, not even a freezing event. But unfortunately, I couldn't connect to any Mobile Network!!, so I had just bricked my cell phone !!! I took it to the cell carrier company (DIGITEL) and they could not do anything since my warranty already expired. WTF ! I was alone with my own problem now to sort it out.
SOLUTION !!
By no means I mean this is a cure but I have just stopped getting the hellish freezing and rebooting problems, and I just wanna share my experience with you so maybe I could help you to get rid of this annoying issues for the time being.
Picking up where I was left off, all I had was my bricked phone and a working ROM: ver. 4.1.2, So I decided to to reinstall this version back on my phone and see if it connected to the mobile carrier.
I reinstalled it and of course, after erasing cache partitions and making a factory reset. The procedures to install any ROM on your cellphone you can find it on internet (for instance, youtube may help a lot).
After I installed the version 4.1.2. my cellphone could connect to the mobile carrier once again... phewww!! But the freezing problems continued to appear in the fuc# phone. Well, now the only option I had to test thoroughly my cell was to install any application one after another but testing if the application was the culprit for the freezing issue.
But right after installing the stock Rom, I got a error message when my phone run to the first screen (Home Screen): TOUCHWIZ stopped responding... it lit my LIGHT BULB! I searched the web for the TOUCHWIZ and found out reports regarding many problems with Touchwiz.
Holy craps! The TOUCHWIZ is a BUGGY APPLICATION that comes with the STOCK ROM developed by SAMSUNG.
My friends there is no way to UNINSTALL that application but to use another LAUNCHER. I fired up and decided to download KIT KAT Launcher. Well, I downloaded the launcher and when you first run this application a windows pops up so you can decide what launcher the cellphone may use and the time to use it. I select ALWAYS I press the HOME button, the launcher to use is KIT KAT.
In addition to that I disable various stuffs, follows (you have to go through the setting app):
Disable Touch wiz (delete CACHE, and FORCE STOP)
Disable GPS
Disable Multi Windows
Disable Swipe Lock ( I found my cellphone freezes a lot while this is on)
I don't use a lot of widgets... but only one: The Clock and Alarm widget.
So far (it has passed 5 days straight without freezing). My phone froze on me while I was downloading something (maybe the phone was updating an app) and at the same time I was texting someone. I am suspicious that there is something to do with the downloading system too and the phone that could trigger a freeze.
Anyway, if you have experienced the freezing issue on your Galaxy S3 just like me, then try what I just outlined and give it a test. But do not download a bunch of program at the same time, just pick one by one, and allow some time to test your application and check if your phone is stable before continue with the next app to download and so forth. I have downloaded so far: whatsapp, BBM, sudoku and other games.
Hope you can get rid of the freezing problems just the way I did, any question feel free to ask.
I will continue posting any advance with my phone.
FROYCARD
PS: excuse my standard English.
Flashing a custom rom would help with the freezing issues too!
Try temasek's 4.4 rom its a lot more smooth than ur stock ull feel u have a new phone
You also lost ur carrier signal because ur efs partition was read only or something so backup ur efs before flashing the rom

None of the above rom I used stopped the freezing issue, that's why I needed to return to stock rom, and since then I am using it without experiencing any laggy or freezing.
Thanks anyway. :good:
Isnt it possible to create a rom with all of Samsungs bloat ripped off (TouchWiz included) and replaced with stock apps?
The problem is that non stock kernel roms use up a lot more battery than the stock one...
what?
i havent got this
Dude, you seem like a total beginner at this. You might want to start by trying a proper wipe, install a rom like Temasek and install a kernel like Boeffla.
Touchwiz is not the problem for your freezing. Get a custom kernel on there and try undervolting to lower the temp your phone. It may be too hot and may lock up.
You don't have to stick to roms available from your carrier either. You might just want to try any recent 4.3 rom from Sammy.

Yeah,,, you may be right I am a newbie... but since I stopped using TOUCHWIZ, I have experienced fewer a fewer lock-ups. I dunno what it is happening with my phone, but that is a fact. I am using KITKAT launcher.
The current stock ROM I am using is: 4.1.2 .... (I9300UBEMH2)
I am not familiar with undervolting to lower my phone's temp... maybe you can guide me about using it, or I could search the web for it.
UPDATE: I installed TWITTER Apps yesterday and each time I used it, it froze my phone for 12 min approx. Any suggestion?

Why should I? Are you a moderator of this forum?
Well I just want to update my post.
Yesterday I just wanted to continue figuring this freezing problem out. Since I published my experiences about freezing until yesterday the problem appears to have reduced significantly. I was using stock ROM ver. 4.1.2 flashed with KIES.
But I wanted to continue testing other ROM's. I tried to install a ROM named SAMMY'S ROM developed by guy named JustArchi (that I found in this forum). However I could not install it on my phone (SGS3 - GT-I9300) since it gave me some errors when I tried to install: ERROR STATUS 7
A margin note: This techie or nerdie called JustArchi gave me the boot from his thread for trying to seek help on this error.. so I trashed this SAMMY'S ROM and move on with another solution.
Whatever, I downloaded another official stock Rom ver. 4.3, released by SAMSUNG, intended for IRELAND - I am not from Ireland, but Venezuela (I founded it at SAMMOBILE under the top 10 latest firmware just released). By using ODIN, I flashed my phone, and to tell the truth, my phone feels differently. I haven't experimented any sluggish or lagging, not even a freezing so far (knocking on wood).
For precaution, I am installing one app at the time, and giving it time to see if everything is stable.
Conclusion: to any guys who is getting the annoying freezing, I think you must stick with it until your mobile carrier makes ROM ver. 4.3 available. Otherwise, if you are like me, wanting to work things out for yourself, download any ROM (ver. 4.3 compatible with your phone model) and test it on your phone. Before doing that, you just have to search the Internet for directions to do so, I am not responsible for what you do with your phone. I'll keep updating if another problem arises.
Note: since I am getting some rude comments from senior members who think they are too techie to read newbie's comments, queries, etc. I am not interested in their replies since they are not helping at all, thus I just ignore your lame comments from now on. Just scram.
Dude, you're really not helping anybody here with your information here. I don't know what you think you're sharing. The error 7 pertains to recover error which can be eliminated by installing an alternate recovery version.
I don't care if you're a newbie or not but you are spreading false info.
I'll scram now.
