Hey everyone. I've been reading a lot on here and I just want to say that I appreciate all the help, advice, and tips everyone has put out ! I have a small question of my own here today.
Is there a way to turn the screen on of the Nexus 4 without using the power button ? Maybe a gesture that you can do on the screen ? flip the screen over ? I'm open to any idea ! If possible, I would like to hear of something that has been actually tested on a nexus 4 as I don't want to screw up my phone in any way. I'm sure I'm not the only one that is worried about wearing out their phone's power button !
Thanks all !
Sweep 2 wake.
There are at least a couple of kernels that support it. I believe Faux123's kernel does. Check original development.
touch control... an app by bponury... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2101488
Use either sweep2wake or volume wake.

AW: [Q] Is there a Power Button alternative ?
Try Auto Screen On. Works really well!

I use intellicover and it works awesome. Uses your proximity sensor and you can just move your hand over it to wake the phone up. Only problem is it is on all the time, so if I'm playing a game and move my hand over the proximity sensor, it shuts the screen off. Really easy to disable though.

TOUCH CONTROL is awesome, all gesture controls. Pick the start and end area of your gesture to turn your screen on or set it to double tap to wake.
To turn display off swipe left to right or right to left across dock area. Nice thing about using gestures over using proximity sensor is in and out of pocket wont wake your display and if your holding your phone with say one hand its pretty tough an awkward to extend your thumb across your screen in order to wave past your sensor, where as gesture can all be done using just one hand and one finger.
touch control is awesome, but consume lot of battery. one day I test the power consumption, turn on 3G data only, non wifi or GPS signal, pull off the plug at 00:00, when I wake up at 7:00, the power remain 81%. I only install two apps, facebook and whatsapp. :crying:
Touch control app on my phone doesn't use hardly any power at all. It isn't in the list of apps under battery and isn't even causing any wakelocks that I can see, and i'm still getting my usual 3-5 hours screen on (depending what i'm doing) and over 20 hours standby.
I seriously recommend this app.
The sweep2wake thing in faux's kernel take two swipes every time to turn my phone on so I use the app.
Hi,
I have the MOKO slim case, just wondering if im able to increase the speed in which the screen wakes when I open the case?
Been looking and there are some mods to edit the proximity sensor but I believe its another sensor id need to modify.
Any ideas chaps?
I want to have less of a wait turning the screen on when I pull back the cover
Thanks
N
I don't know about you but my tab is awake the second I lift up the cover an inch away... By the time it is fully open it is well awake
mine kinda takes a little while too, but i dont really mind it. I have the moko too and by the time i get the flap behind the tablet its on
Sometimes it will lag if you closed it on a different orientation then your opening it. (Portrait/landscape)

I was using the smart cover for my Google Nexus 10 for sometime and wondering if the feature can turn off my screen, are there available applications which allow me to program me to do other things like turn off wifi after sometime if cover is closed to conserve battery and back on when the cover if opened. Thanks to anyone with suggestions
That's fairly advanced programming, you'll probably need a custom ROM to be able to do that have a search around on some of the ROM threads and ask the developers if they could help you out

I'm pretty sure you can use Tasker for that.
Edit: Never mind, it looks like proximity sensor is not supported yet by Tasker on the Nexus 10.
I would imagine it should be fairly easy to write a program that can do this. I know that I use an emulator for Game Boy Advance that has options to use the proximity sensor for controls (havent used it though), so if something like that is able to read data from the sensor then anyone should be able to. And that app doesnt even require root. I would think though that to put the tablet to sleep would require root access to the command. The one thing I dont know about would be waking the tablet up. I would imagine that the proximity sensor would be disabled when the tablet is in deep sleep, so it may not be able to be used to wake up the tablet. And using an app to always keep the sensor awake may prevent the tablet from ever going into deep sleep.
I think the Nexus 10 does NOT have a proximity sensor...

Hmmm, looks like you're right. I downloaded sensor readout app from the play store and it's not registering a proximity sensor.

I think the smart cover used the magnetic field for the wake and sleep function instead of the proximity sensor. It was my mistake in assuming it was a proximity sensor.
So I'm guessing you just need an app to turn off WiFi when the device is put to sleep? Try this, it worked wonders for me:

you can simply set the wifi sleep policy to "Always" which will turn off your wifi when you turn off the screen

Can anyone confirm that? Because on Google I get lots of hits with the specs for the Nexus 10 including the proximity sensor.
I just want to use Tap Tap App.

I know many people are having issues regarding the cases that wake your device. A supposed fix is to turn on wifi or bluetooth. I just noticed today that if you're using a custom kernel with doubletap2wake or sweep2sleep/sweep2wake, that enabling either the doubletap2wake or sweep2wake fixes the issue as well. The screen auto wakes using my Slimline if that option is enabled. I feel like this is a step towards narrowing down what the issue is.
Actually, I flashed a kernel with those features because of my wake issue and it didn't fix anything at all for me. It was exactly the same, which I expected. It was annoying, though, so now I just leave Bluetooth on and call it a day. I'd rather leave Bluetooth on all the time than have to double tap every other time I open my cover.

I've had doubletap2wake on all day. Airplane mode on. Works every time. The moment I turn off doubletap2wake--the issue pops back up. Maybe I'm just lucky/unlucky?
I always read around the forums that everyone has problems with the magnetic wake lock, but my supcase works perfectly fine each time I open it. I'm even running CM10.2 Kang FLO version. Could it just be the cases people are using?
Highly doubtful. If it was something where the case would intermittently work all the time or it was something that only happened if the case was folded back, then maybe it is the case.
In this case, the case works all the time until there is some wifi event or the unit goes into deep sleep under certain situations.
The case is a simple magnet. It just needs to be strong enough to be recognized consistent. It has no idea about those states.
FWIW Google/Paul mentioned they were able to duplicate the problem and are looking into it.

Rather than using airplane mode, have you tried leaving bluetooth off and WiFi on but setting WiFi to sleep when the screen is off? That's how I can reproduce it consistently.

Dammit. That did it. Oh well, I was wrong.
How i solved the wake lock/ lock screen hang issue
Guys I solved the issue you will not believe how simple this is lol.
The issue isn't hardware or software for that matter, YES NOTHING IS WRONG WITH YOUR DEVICE, but rather the cases themselves. My issue was that the device would lock whenever i had the case folded back in either Landscape or Portrait mode. Whether watching a movie or reading my books/ comics
I tried toggling Bluetooth and Wi-Fi no success. :crying:
However, I realized that using the Tablet in the case while it was in "standing mode". The screen would never turn off. So I tried something and took a leap of faith.
Instead of having the power button inline with the magnetic strip on your case, i just turned it upside down i.e. swivel the tablet so that the power button was no longer inline with the magnetic strip. I held the edges near the power button as hard as i could and it never once turned off lol. :good:
Yet as soon as i turned it back to be inline with the strip it turned off instantly with every try. After several exhausted tries I am certain that this works and solves the issue. as a matter a fact once you remove the magnetic strip side away from the power button it doesn't hang up, the effect is instantaneous.

Glad you fixed your own issue, specific to your (badly designed) case. This thread is about the 2013 Nexus 7 not waking after being asleep for a while, using the magnetic case sensor.

I am not sure what the case is called it's a generic case however I have photos of said case
I read in a review, but I can't recall, that the S5 has the same feature as the HTC M8 (One) that double tapping the screen wakes the phone.
I can't find out how to enable it.
See my thread, haha. The best buy demo unit was able to do it, but I cant figure it out on my phone to save my life.
If you go to Settings > Accessibility > Dexterity and Interaction > Enable "Air wake up".
You can then just hover your palm over the front face of the phone to wake it up.

Yea, but that causes a lot of issues because your phone will keep turning on when in your pocket
What we truly need is a double tap screen to turn it on

Ahh does it? I haven't tested it fully, but once I get my phone back I'll give it a test.
I'm sure Samsung would have considered the fact that we would be putting our phones in our pockets, and so they
would have prevented this from happening?
I'd assume that the system will look for a slight (not full) loss of light at close proximity, followed by the light returning?

OMG....
This feature only works when the device is on a flat surface, facing up. The accelerometer takes care of the measurement.
Even with the feature turned on, the device will not wake when in pocket, backpack, purse... :good:
I don't think he's looking for an app which will only turn the screen on if the phone is lying flat.
I would also like a double tap to wake. I hate air wakeup.

bad news is, as far as i know, it's kernel related as s5 doesn't come with that feature.
good news is, @faux123 is planning to put that awesome feature to our galaxy devices, let's hope and keep our finger crossed
It's a kernel thing as the poster above me said. We'll just have to wait for a dev to release a kernel with DT2W support.
Maybe this would work.

Battery eater cause screen keeps on.
Only solution is kernel with this option.
Custom kernel does not exist for my G901F yet, so good compromising is gravity screen on/off from here
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree&hl=fr
I couple it with proximity screen off from here
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.itsme4ucz.screenoffpro&hl=fr
With proximity screen off, I activated flip/cover mode.
With gravity screen on/off, activate pocket protection and screen on with movement.
Moreover, I chained gravity screen with a task (on/off) from tasker according to multiples profiles (work, car, home).
As a result:
- screen goes off when I cover screen or just wave on screen.
- screen goes on when I open flip cover, when I move my phone or wave on screen
withour doing anything else.
Best regards
Franky

Hi there...I teste Ktoonsez and it doesn't work on s5...he considered it would drain the battery!!!
We can't have lg g3 feature on our s5s-s...COMMON!!!!!
Why the heck would you like this feature if u have that bottom button which u ONLY HAVE TO PUSH IT ONCE and screen is on.... Wtf.... Need Duble tap... When u have that physical button

Lol.....I can see your point, but, I can also see the other side of it.........
Over time, the home button is gonna be pressed a s**tload of times....there's a possibility that *some* home buttons will wear out.......
I've had a look at "teardown" videos for the S5, and tbh, replacing the button will be a REAL b***ard........
Also, bear in mind that the home button now includes that fingerprint scanner, so the chances are that a replacement button assembly ain't gonna be cheap.

There also be a chance that u never use fingerprint so you can stick on the button something like a screen protector
And even if you find a way to use double tap wake.... You will have to consider the fact that. . This thing will use battery pretty much ... Because I think... IT will have to keep on the touch all the time

I'm using G900T on 4.4.2 stock, rooted and with ktoonsez kernel, and double tap to wake works flawlessly.
Boeffla kernel also has the double tap to wake option its for 5.0 LP.
