Google Services Wakelock - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I seem to be having a very annoying Google Services Wakelock on my Nexus 4 Device.
It is using more battery power than the screen, and keeps teh phone alive 100% of the time.
I'm on PA 3.97 - 4.2.2 Android.
Better Battery Stats tells me under Partial Wakelocks that SystemUpdateService Is keeping the phone alive, as well as under Kernel Wakelock PowerManagerService.
I'm wondering what I can do about this. Because it is really eating my battery life. Google tried to update to 4.3 over and over again, which wasn't possible because I was on a custom rom. So it kept redownloading it and I was forced to disable the update system (I don't exactly remember how I did it, but since I have root I disabled UpdateReciever under updates somehow).
I hope we can find a way to fix this.

Bump! Still need a solution

You're getting the wakelock because you disabled the update service.
The only solution is to either enable it , and lose data, or update to 4.3

We are literally talking about 20 000$ + of Data usage if I were to leave it on for a month.
Unless google wants to pay me that money every month I'd rather not have the update service on. Not to mentionhow much constant Data streams to download a file over and over again would drain teh battery.
Also, doesn't everyone with PA (3.97) who hasn't updated to 4.3 have this. I'm on a custom ROM so I shouldn't be forced to update to 4.3 anyways!
How come the battery is a wakelock when I entirely Disabled the service?
What other google services should I disable to make it stop entirely from even trying to update?

That thread is about another Google Services Wakelock that has to do with the GPS. I never had that location setting on.
Mine has to do with it trying to update, thus keepiçng the device on, although the update service is actually disabled(since it doesn't actually download data).
Does anyone know how to completely disable the google update service in every way possible since that is what keeps my wakelock on.

I have absolutely no issue like you, i`am on 4.3 stock with stock kernel and no continious syncing going on bro and the cpu going into deep sleep without issues. Try reflashing to stock to see if the issue still excists.

That's because the issue has to do with ParanoidAndroid having a bug that it picks up the Stock 4.3 updates, downloads them and then fails to install them. I am on a 4.2.2 ROM, 4.3 of course won't have that issue since that is what it is trying to download. Also I really just want to keep this version of Paranoid Android.
So what I tried doing was disable the Google update service entirely a few weeks ago. And it has stopped trying to download any updates.
However, the past few days that same Google Update (which should be completely disabled) is still keeping my phone a alive, although not downloading anything anymore. I just wnat a way to completely just permanently kill the Update Process.

Hi
To avoid this bug: don't pull out the charger or usb cable whit out to wake up the phone, be sure the screen is on when you pull out. If you pull out with screen off powermanagerservice.wakelock will keep your phone to never enter deep sleep.
A reboot also solves the problem
Think this bug is related to the wireless charger bug.

Ok, I guess that will already stop 1/2 wakelocks.
The other one has to do with the update service still keeping my device awake although it was disabled with disable service.

I think I was finally able to fix the issue!
I downloaded AutoRun Manager and disabled
com.android.gsf.update.SystemUpdateService$Reciever, which can be found under Google Services Framework,
I already had updates disabled using "Disable Service" app from Google Play Store, which did the job for stopping Data Usage, but there was still an idle process keeping the phone awake, which was the SystemUpdateServiceReciever.
I am on Paranoid Android and might want to Update to 4.3 due to them making continious new cool features which will only work for 4.3.
First off, I would like to ask if the update to 4.3 was worth the effort for you. It doesn't really seem to be a significant update on the side on the google dev team. Secondly, how would I go about doing it?
I am now on PA 3.69 - 4.22 which is one of the latest versions before the 4.3 update.
What do I need to do before I am able to flash 3.99 PA - 4.3? How do I avoid losing my appdata, my pictures and all that?
I paid for Titamiumbackup a few months ago but I don't really know how to use it and I'm a little scared to update to a different version number as I have never done that before, and I don't want to brick my phone.
What radios do I need to flash before being able to update to 4.3 based custom roms?

I'm on PA 3.99 with BaNkS GAPPS, which I highly recommend because of the size and stripped way they are. I think TitaniumBackup had some problems with PA and root, but I'm not sure if they already fixed those.
You need latest radio and bootloader to update, I think the easiest way to do this is to make a factory reset, full clean and wipe all data and then back to 4.2.2 stock ROM. Then update through OTA and you would have latest radio and bootloader. Install custom recovery and then flash latest PA.
I did it this way and I don't have any kind of problems.

i am facing the same problem too. Running 4.2.2 (sentinel rom 4.75). google services is draining a good 30% of my battery.
so disabling using AutoRun Manager managed to solve the wakelock problem due to SystemUpdateService? i used Disable Service app to stop the data usage, but wakelock remains.

Yes, exactly that. Disable service disabled. That stopped My data usage (luckily before the cap of My data plan, if I would have phone higher it would probably have costed me a few hundred dollars.).
The Google services drain remained and after about 10 hours of research I found I found out the receiver was still trying to download it, but didn't get access which caused a wake lock. In auto run manager search Google services framework and disable the googleupdatereciever and nothing else, keep everything disabled that is already disabled

Thanks for sharing the solution! helped me on 4.1.2 after disabling only some of google's receivers/services with "Google Services Framework" in Rom toolbox
Better battery FTW!

[Q] Google Keep extreme battery consumption

Hello guys,
I let my Nexus 4 charging, and when it was done, I removed the charging cable and just let it on my table. I was watching a movie and I didn't even touched the phone.
When I unlocked the phone, my battery was showing 93% with only 2h after disconnecting the charger, and the app with most battery consuption is Google Keep
I've attached a screenshot.
And also I've noticed that my device is hotter. And I can't uninstall Google Keep (I use Evernote and Springpad instead of Keep), I think it's a built in app in the Android 4.3
My Nexus 4 is 4.3 with Stock ROM and Kernel.
Anyone knows what is going on?
Thanks!

Yes you can uninstall Google keep if you are rooted. If you dont want to root just try rebooting and if you find this problem still persisting make a factory reset.
Press thanks if I helped you. :good:
If you are not rooted and you don't use Keep you can go to
settings>apps>all apps>Keep> disable
Hope this helps.

Thank you! This solved my problem, first I've uninstalled all the updates of Google Keep, and it already fixed the problem, and then I've disabled it just to be sure Looks like some newer updates of Keep are bugged in some devices
I know your issue has been resolved by disabling the app, but looking at your first screenshot it could have been a sync issue. Your screenshot showed no data connection so Keep may have been trying to sync in the background and keeping your phone awake since there was no connection.

Cache Update Service Wakelock

How do I stop this? My phone has not been able to deep sleep all morning. Battery is draining hard. Any tips? I tried searching for this online and I wasn't able to come up with a proper solution other than disabling this service, which might have repercussions I don't want.

I have the exact same problem, and I don't think our setups have anything in common
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
there is a thread one one of our N4 subsections to fix that. i dont know the link
I and oane friend had this wired bug his morning!
Also started for me could be its the same as the 4.2 data drain when it was trying to update to 4.3.
It got sorted after I restarted but it happens again I'll try applying the same fix and see if it works.
I had that same wakelock and it was cutting my battery in half.
I downloaded this aplication https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.wq.disableservice
Then navigate to system apps/google play services/show full name and uncheck this first option on my SS
That worked for me,no more battery draining from cacheupdateservice
You must be rooted offcourse.
I have the same problem, any solution to unrooted devices? This is very annoying, when a service wakelock seems to disappear, another one appears.

Hi guys, clearing the cache for google play services (+rebooting phone) solved the problem in my case.

Kit Kat Issue Summary (Upgrading or Using on Droid Line)- Please add your issues

A list of issues I've read about with KitKat.
Install
If you previously rooted like a monkey (you blindly followed instructions without understanding them), you will probably have issues upgrading - either a brick or an unrooted KitKat.
If you are on KitKat and not rooted, you have no option to root at the present time
Battery
Totally "by feel" but it seems a touch worse to me. No empirical data to back that up. tehcodeman feels his is slightly better.
Applications
Play Store would download 100% of any new app I was trying to install then get stuck. Force stopping store & clearing store cache fixed the issue
USB OTG no longer works. You can use third party apps like StickMount but they require root
Issues with Tap & Pay not working
stock mail client will not start if you swipe its notification up from active display since the KitKat update. See https://forums.motorola.com/posts/6c3888a792 . This is true for me using stock email client to MS Exchange Server.
[*]Phone won't send mms(pic/vid/group) when connected to wifi (Metfanant). I've read there is an issue with Hangouts + Kitkat and MMS on wifi (not droid specific). Some have said using default messenger works. I tested either.
Photo bucket does not work on ART. - Probably many more apps too as this is relatively new to developers.
Root
changing the SQLite db for tether no longer works - you now need to replace the entitlement apk
If you got to KitKat and didn't Slap it first and therefore have no root, you are SOL
Xposed does not work with ART - if you have it installed and try to switch to ART, the phone will reboot but you will still be dalvik.
Cant switch to ART from dalvik - doesn't take: Do you have Xposed installed? If so that's why.
Non-Root
I've read things like foxfi and other tether apps no longer work (except maybe via bluetooth)
Other
More issues (than with 4.2) with connectivity to non VZW carriers.
My Bluetooth connection to my car (VW) drops occasionally (it never did on 4.2). Not often enough to be super annoying but enough that sometimes I think I must be getting a call, email or some other notification. Comes back on its own about 5 seconds later.
BAH! I thought I was posting in Q&A forum - can a mod move it? unless it belongs here.
Almost good enough as a stickie!
fat-fingered and Maxx-ed out.
I don't see how any of those are issues with KitKat in the slightest. Maybe you mean "Limitations with KitKat"?
Also, my battery "feels" better than ever. I used it moderately at work today and had 80% charge at 5pm after unplugging it at 7 this morning.

Its meant to be a list of issues upgrading to, rooting, or applications on KitKat on the Droid Maxx/Ultra phones. If you don't see how the items posted are related to that....
The home key issue is the biggest annoyance for me. I was trying the Aviate launcher and it made it almost unusable.
Many people are reporting Bluetooth issues, particularly after the upgrade with existing devices. Sometimes unpairing and reestablishing the pair fixes the problem. I've done a factory reset and that seems to have fixed almost everything.
I concur about the battery. At best it is the same as before, but it's usually a bit worse - as much as an extra 1% per hour of drain compared with before. It was the same both before and after the factory reset that I did. It may have something to do with Google Play Services - I'm still waiting for the update. But I probably received the last, buggy update right around the time that I updated to KitKat last month. What's weird is that it isn't consistent - some days I end up with 40% battery, some days I end up with 60%, and usage is the same.
The only Play Store issues I've had came after the factory data reset - it took hours to reinstall all of my apps. Otherwise that's been rock-solid for me.
I noticed the Motorola Kit Kat build didn't include the Google Cloud Print app with native Android printing support. The app that's available from the play store doesn't work with the native print functionality, either. However, sideloading the Cloud Print apk pulled from a kit kat Nexus device does work.
It's disappointing that Kit Kat pulled USB OTG support. There are non-root apps like Total Commander+USB plugin or the Nexus Media Importer that can bring back partial support.
Biggest annoyance has been the home button double tap bug. Been playing with various xposed apps to try and override it, but so far not much luck. This needs to be fixed ASAP. I am currently rooted so everything else is fixable via xposed or 3rd party apps (tethering, blue status bar, etc). I've also had some random wakelocks that won't go away without a reboot (last one was the audioMix wakelock) but those aren't consistent so I can't really chalk that up to 4.4 as wakelock problems existed in 4.2.2. Otherwise 4.4 has been pretty good, and I especially like immersion mode (even with the hard buttons having a pulldown status bar is nice when you're running fullscreen games).
I don't use the stock email client - I just use Gmail - but I have read that the stock mail client will not start if you swipe its notification up from active display since the KitKat update. See https://forums.motorola.com/posts/6c3888a792

Help me solve my Idle battery drain - and better battery stats report posted

Hello,
Been struggling a lot with my battery drain since I bought my 6t.
I am unrooted and now with 9.0.7, I already uninstalled a lot of apps to try and locate the root cause for my battery drain. I never had social apps which I know can misbehave a lot.
I have location, nfc, etc always turned off, battery optimisation settings always on.
I installed better battery settings and what you see is during my sleep, and the phone drained a lot once more.
Another issue I am having is that each time the phone reboots the find my device is activated even after I set it to not do anything.
I need help though, I quite do not understand what I should do now.
What is my problem? What can I do to achieve the crazy screen on time some of you have? More, I would be happy to just solve the screen off battery drain. One day I had over 40% drain without using the phone more than 5 minutes.
Can someone please help me out?

The problem is that you messed up your stock Rom in the process of unrooting. My best advice is to root your phone again and back up everything with Titanium Backup. After that, use MSM download to return to stock ( The same software state you had it in when you first bought it). I can assure you that the hardware is fine, but misbehaving software will only cause more harm to your phone. No one will provide you with a simple fix like a flashable zip and dont panic because its not that big of a deal. I bricked my 6t right after misreading instructions, but it recovered and its heavily modded. Go back to stock and start over

I came up with that answer without checking those screenshots, but now its obvious. By unrooted, do you mean you had root and then unrooted or havent attempted anything? The other thing is obvious, your battery is draining because of google play services. I had the same problem, but i removed my gapps because i use better app alternatives that dont require google play services. The other thing is i use services though my browser than having a separate app for everything. I find it safer and i use Brave browser.

You probably got it right, I already had twrp installed but since it was not working I went back to stock. How did you figure that out?
I might need some help to do as you said since I do not want to brick the phone. What if i do a factory reset? Will it cure the problem?

A factory reset wont really fix the issue, but you could always give it a try if you backup your precious files first. The problem that i am currently facing on my device is that i cant port Google Camera. I realized that it doesnt work without google play services, but i am not going to start over from stock just to get one app (Doing so fixes everything, but there is a workaround). I am planning on Deodexing my stock ROM and installing MicroG. Its really difficult to find easy instructions , but i gotta challenge myself. Anyways, in your case you just need to give the MSM Download Tool a try, its normally used to unbrick devices and return them to stock. You can always use it in case you mess up your software to the point where flashable zips only cause more issues.

Accessed stock recovery, made a factory reset from there by erasing everything. In about 11 hours the phone used almost 20% battery and no screen on time! Just standing there the whole time. I think I really need to do something, will try that tool you pointed.
No chance of bricking right?
Regards
tried it, it gives me a sahara communication failed. not sure what should I do now.
EDIT: I remember better now. when I got the phone it was on 9.0.4, I updated to 9.0.5. Then I side loaded the temporary and somewhat "compatible" TWRP which I used to flash Magisk. not sure why but root checker said I was not rooted and since an official TWRPO seemed to be far I decided to lock the bootloader (this gave me the official recovery back).
Do you think this is what is causing me the battery drain? everything is working properly to the exception of battery drain.
ANOTHER EDIT: decided to contact oneplus directly and explained the situation (even mentioned I had twrp and that I flashed magisk. they asked me to send the phone so they will see if this is hardware problem or software. not sure if they are going to charge me or not but I think it is unfair to charge (lets wait and see).
Can anyone help me figure out how to solve this problem assuming this is a software issue? I would pretty much like to avoid shipping the phone, never had good experiences with these rma assistance in the past.
Hi Cesar,
Hentai already suggested you how your problem could be solved
Cheers

The mistake you are committing is this: having installed BBS, you should have taken an idle dump (as described in the OP of the BBS thread) and posted it in the BBS thread asking for help. Screenshots won't help.
Google Play Services by itself rarely drains battery on Oreo and especially Pie. All the apps go through Play Services for their requirements and if there is a misbehaving app, instead of finding it, people blame Play Services (I am not a fanboy of Google).
EDIT: Having said that, I just checked your screenshots. BBS is not functioning properly and the readings are skewed. Which version are you running? From your battery history screenshots, I see that you seem to have about 2% per hour drain. At best it can be brought down to 0.5%. Uninstall BBS, reboot and reinstall it. Let us see whether this time it runs properly.

I am still in 9.0.7.
I think that drain right after disconnection from the charger also happened to me but not sure how it is now after my "cleaning" ! Before when it was draining a lot I had it for sure but the phone was always sucking battery.

EvolutionX 5.2.2 keeps downloading "system updates" on the background

Hello everyone,
I have been experiencing an issue with EvolutionX 5.2.2 since a while ago and it's really been bugging me. The OS keeps on downloading system updates on the background by itself, which causes first and foremost huge cellular data drains and massive battery drains, in where it downloaded about 10GB of data in about 15 days and which made my phone go from 100% to 15% in 6 hours with the phone locked most of the time. I have tried disabling all the services related to system updates and such but I still had no luck with it. I'll provide some screenshots of cellular data below, one of the system updates app/service itself (which I couldn't find in the apps department in settings) and one of Firefox for reference. You can see that I can disable all Wifi and cellular data setting for firefox but not for the system updates app.

Ho, buddy have i got news for you. THis is exactly the same problem i had on my MI9T. The cause of the problem is still unknown, probably some google background update ****.
The problem itself is caused by google VPN/DNS service app (they call all that **** app, android auto services blahblahblah. If you pay attention google just auto installs them if you dont pay attention). I am not exactly sure how it is called, something like google DNS/VPN services or something. Its constantly trying to connect to something but cant and just bloody destroys your data and battery life. Started somewhere back in beginning november. To fix it find the service (it can be found as an installed system app) and delete / disable it.
I cant exactly remember how its called so i am sorry that i cant exactly point you in the right direction. But i do know that the problem is exactly the same as mine and that deleting that system app solved it and it did not come back. For now at least.....
I think its called google connectivity services.

Thanks you very much for your feedback. You could have just ignored this post cause in reality you've already fixed the problem but you chose to help instead and for that I appreciate you. I unfortunately do not have that version of EvolutionX, specifically the 5.9.3 Ocean 202111011, got it from this thread at XDA and everything seems to work without problem and even better tha I expected, with no battery drain or constant system crashes so far so I'm really happy with it (it even comes with the stock MIUI camera which I think is really cool) so I definetly recommend this version over the other and I don't really get why they have the other one on the official EvoX webpage. Once again, thanks for the help.
