Laggy animations - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have two nexus 4 in my hand and one of the phones runs more smoother and nicer than the other one. For example, the lock animation runs nice and smooth in the first one but the other one runs OK but a bit laggy compare to the first one. Anther example is the app drawer that open smoother that the second one.
They both has the same animations speed. (x1.0)

It works (at least for my eyes). Even the slight lag I'd experienced seems to be gone, and my Gnote feels snappier than before. Could be subjective but I'm happy with it.
Thanks for the tip.

But isn't it fastEST with 'no animations' set?

Yes... it is.
I have tried both settings and don't see significant difference.

Many thanks mate.
Made a noticeable bump in speed for me. Excellent!
Thanks for the app, sometimes I just felt it's a shame that you have to download a third party app to boost up the phone or do anything normally which the every smartphones must have when it born. This is why everyone is rooting as stock rom sucks?
Thanks for the find robdee102.
Are there any other settings we can change to increase the speed of the phone?
The device doesnt get any faster, its deception. The length of the animated transition equals about the time needed for the application to load. Turning off the animation or setting it to happen faster only results in the animation being finished before the app's interface is fully loaded and the user looking at a blank black or white screen for a split second... Because the zoom or swipe effect happens faster one gets the feeling the device actually being faster; which in reality it isn't.
Thanks for listening. My 2¢.

Good explanation, i like the look of it with faster animations. And yeah gives the impression of a quicker device. Better than slowwwww...

Yeah, there's DEFINATELY a difference, it feels more responsive, going through menus, etc...
I'm not denying it feels quicker. On the contrary. But because everyone around you suddenly walks slow doesnt make you walk any quicker ;-)
It was very noticeable on older devices with only 500ish MHz and 192MB of RAM, like the original G1/Dream/Sapphire and the likes. Those guys needed the extra time to launch an app and load the UI. Now with 1Gig, dedicated GPU and dualcore CPUs we are talking milliseconds. It really doesnt matter anymore...
A shame not all functions of Spareparts are supported though...

Nexus seems slow

My phone seems overall kind of laggy. I'm on stock 4.2.1 with stock kernel. Just started noticing the lag today. Minimal but annoying and seems to exist on almost all the kernels I have tried.

It's cheap and dirty, but I always set animations to half speed (.5x) and use Nova launcher with the animations cranked to fast. That makes me feel all warm inside.
My advice would be to root and flash a custom ROM such as Parandroid.

How exactly are you defining 'lag' though? I'm on a rooted stock ROM and stock kernel with no issues whatsoever, speed is much faster than any phone I've used before.
I have tonnes of apps installed on the stock ROM. Runs okay at the moment, beautifully smooth
there is definitely lag on the touch gestures. i see it and it's been commented-on in reviews.
eg. when you gesture to scroll or pinch expand there is a momentary delay (fraction of a second) before anything happens. just long enough to be annoying. it's not instant.

That's because of the poor touch screen sensitivity of the phone.

That's not lag, that's just the lack of sensitivity in the touch screen. It's hardware related but if you look at this video from oode (definitely subscribe to him for quality tech videos) it appears that this issue isn't there in Firefox for some reason. As of now I don't know of any solution as such.

Just the occasional freeze for a second on opening the keyboard or apps, seems slower than last week when I got it.

OK, I installed the touch increase mod and the lag is better

Moving around the UI is fairly laggy

Just got mine in from handtec and straight away i can tell you that the general user performance is not as good as the Nexus 4. Transition animation is laggy about 60% of the time. What i mean is that the transition animation would stutter and drop frames unlike the N4 which is good about 95% of the time. Now i dont know if i haven't update or if something is wrong but my Build number is
10.1.A.1.350
I also tried using BOTH nova and stock and NO stamina mode is NOT on.
Bought mine from handtec too. Not experiencing any lag like you're. Have quite a few widgets running as well. Everything seems buttery smooth at present.
Sam here the launcher is laggy.

I don't use Chrome as it happens. I use Opera Mobile.
Don't have any lag as well. Switched from chrome to dolphin browser because chrome is sometimes slow as hell. But didn't notice any frame drops when I used it
Was laggy for like 5 seconds of the first ever boot then after that its fine no lag at all.
Could you guys post a screenshot of.your software info like this one.

Light Grid Live Wallpaper Lag

Hi everyone, I just got my N4 today and was pretty excited to run the light grid live wallpaper, when I did, my homescreen (apex) lags between transitions
Is that normal? Any way to get rid of it?
Thank you very much

There shouldn't be any lag. Try using a simpler animation, maybe (or turn off any complex animations). Does the wallpaper lag on stock launcher?

The lag persists on any launcher, I was wondering if it doesn't happen to anyone else since it's a popular live wallpaper

KitKat + GEL launcher = slow piece of crap

I'm running unrooted, stock KitKat with GEL launcher and it's slow as hell.
Screen transitions, any changes to icons, Google now everything is slow as hell.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda app-developers app
You might want to check other possibilities. I am using GEL launcher without significant slowing, a hitch here or there, but nothing too horrible.

Then don't use gel launcher. Use the stock one or nova beta which is themed like gel. There already threads about this. No reason to make a new one just to say it sucks. Anyways it's not meant for the nexus 10 so unless someone or Google optimizes it for our tablet it won't work well because of all the transparency

Well, you have nexus 5, you should know how fast it is running. Nexus 10 is not even close to that. It actually reminds me Samsung device bloated with touchwiz.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Think about it this way. The device has to draw the entire screen 2 times one of those being a transparent layer while animating it... that will task any device... wouldn't be surprised to see the new N10 come out with 1080p just for this issue.. I don't think any SOC that can handle this resolution with transparency

Use Nova Launcher beta with transculent. Working great and smooooth
I take my words back. After "S" update the tablet seems to back being responsive again, even with GEL launcher.
I've recently tried Note 10.1 2014 and even though it runs on latest hardware its dead slow 'cause of touchwiz overkill.

Which zip did you flash to get translucent enabled?
