I dropped my phone and cracked the screen at the bottom. It's barely noticeable, but the area at the bottom where it is cracked is unresponsive to touches. This is unfortunately the most important part of the screen, and makes navigating around the phone difficult.
Is there some kind of software workaround where I can basically push up the nav bar, and have it ignore the very bottom of the phone? Or is there a better solution? Pie appears to be another option, but I have found it semi-difficult to use.

Haha, right.
The physical button placement makes that sub-ideal (as well as the camera). That quickfix would just replace the nav bar issue with a notification bar issue.
Install custom Rom with pie and use that.

Am I the only one that seems to be having a major issue with this? It comes up more with the added on screen keyboard in 1.5, it seems.
The corners of the G1 screen do not respond to touch at all, and I find myself always having trouble hitting the keys on the corners of the virtual keyboard. Applications that require you to touch any corner of the screen with precision (ie tic-tac-toe) are annoying as well because it's difficult to get it to work.
Is there any fix in sight or is it a hardware limitation?
definitely a hardware limitation.
hardware limitation means: normal hardware limitation or limited due failure????
I only experience this problem with the right edge of my phone. The top, left, and bottom don't have any problems.
Touch also seems to be less sensitive when the phone is rested flat.
My phone has the sensitivity problem on the edges too (mostly on the right and top sides).
For example, it's almost impossible to drag an icon to the left screen, because it doesn't seem to reach the threshold area.
The protective screen (boxwave anti-glare) made the problem even worse, but since it's much more comfortable than the glass, I won't be taking it off.
The easiest way to test all this is to use the whiteboard application.
So, I ask the developers: Please don't place the buttons on the edges of the screen!
The worst apps in this regard I've seen so far were the Video player (don't remember its exact name, its seek slider was unusable), and the sudoku with the number chooser in the bottom. OpenHome's app slider has the same problem.
I have noticed that when I press/tap on the lower left and right corners (in portrait, in landscape its the top right and bottom right corners) I get the typical LCD 'ripple' effect (as if I am pressing on a typical LCD monitor). Is this normal? No other Android phone I own does this as the glass on the device separates the LCD enough from where people touch. Normal?
Second, I notice that when dragging things (again, picture this in portrait mode) from top to bottom, about 60% of the way down the screen its like it stops reading my finger and the widget, icon, etc drops there and stops following my finger. I need to apply decent pressure to get it to keep tracking my finger. Normal?
I am using the AT&T streak with the 2.1 ROM.

both normal.
the screen ripple is because the lcd screen is actually bonded to the protective glass
The last point is not normal, I don't have to press hard to keep a drag going.

Yeah I've never experienced the 2nd but definitely the ripple I sorta expected.

Maybe its a design tweak to stop the screen from breaking so easily? My first streak never rippled but then one day i turned it on and found my screen had broken. After a three week long battle with 02 i got a new model and lo and behold ripple whenever i press near the edge of the screen.

Anyone else having artifacts on the far right (last 5%) of screen? It is most noticeable when in landscape mode (when in landscape mode, its noticeable at the top status bar near the 3G and time).
Not sure if this is a "new" issue with the shift, or may only be a defect on mine.

sounds like a defect. return and get a NEW phone
Yeah, sounds defective, I'd head to the Sprint Store.
Mine does it in portrait but only on a certain app

For me, the bottom side (the edge with the home, menu, back and search buttons) is noticeably dimmer than the rest of the screen. It's like this on the one I returned, the new one, and my friend's which makes 3 for 3. ****ty but then I noticed that all four corners of my hero had a weird glow to them. 6 in one, half a dozen in the other.
I've been having a weird screen issue lately, independent of rom or kernel; my screen won't respond to touch input directly beneath the status bar.
For instance, if I touch an icon or button at the top of the screen, it does not respond at all... Unless I rotate the phone into landscape mode and select the command.
The status bar itself works fine, I just have to tilt the phone to use the area of the screen underneath it. Weird.
Just a shot in the dark, do you have a screen cover that might have lifted a bit?

I have a matte, anti-glare cover, but it's tight as a drum. Not even an air bubble.
Similar thing happened to my last phone. Only it was the bottom corner. Never found a solution. Ended up getting new phone.
The bottom 1cm of my touch screen no longer works.
I'm getting by using pie and rotating the phone but holy cow is it awkward! Is it possible to:
Recalibrate the touchscreen so that it thinks I'm tapping a bit lower
Or
Constantly render an empty black bar down there so nothing shows up and needs clicking in the area
Or
Replace the digitizer only (don't want to buy a new LCD)
Or..
Anything?
Thanks!
