[Q] USB Storage is acting weird - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I connect my Nexus 4 to my PC things get a little weird. I've attached an image to show my problem. Some folders (for instance TitaniumBackup) show up as 0kb files. Also, some files that I deleted like the LTEhybrid zip still show up in explorer. Trying to delete the file does nothing in explorer, likely because it doesn't exist. Sometimes I can't copy files to or from my phone. I'll get an error that my phone is no longer responding or the copy dialog box will simply disappear. I'm hoping this issue can be resolved without restoring to factory settings.
I should note that changing to PTP seems to function better, but I can only access DCIM and Pictures.
Debugging on or off makes no difference. I'm running stock rom 4.3 rooted, although I've had this problem for as long as I can remember. The file system works perfectly fine on any app on my nexus 4. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is wrong or how it can be fixed?
Thanks.

I've not found a way to fix as of yet. It's a bug in mtp.
A quick reboot will force it to update properly then you can get your files. But the bug will happen again

Rebooting does not help. I've tried using a program named MyPhoneExplorer which seems to work well. I can copy things to and from my phone's storage and everything is displayed accurately.
Would it be safe to assume it's a problem with windows and not with my nexus?

Help MTP application (Kies connection) Broken

Guys,
After a failure to get my phone to connect to odin-3 when it was in download mode, I took out the battery (since I did not know how to get it "out" of download mode) just to get it to boot up again.
No harm, as odin did not start to copy the firmware to the phone (since it could not communicate with it), the phone was working and all my apps were there, however, when I plugged my phone into my laptop the PC Kies application would start but my phone to attempt to load "MTP Appliation", however it would just flip back to the touchwiz screen and back to MTP Application then back to touchwiz again (non-stop).
Not sure why this is happening, or what I broke ?
I have since (using Odin) flashed my phone with the latest (European) firmware but the problem is still there, MTP mode just restarting all the time and kies never connecting (I also tried reinstalled the Desktop Kies app).
Anyone know how I can get this working again?
On a related note, i also installed doubletwist (before the steps above) and had to turn on usb debug mode.
I have since turned it off when not syncing with dkubletwist but noticed sometimes the music player saying mass storage device mode is on?
I wonder if some "state/lock" file is left behind somewhere on the phone?
Could the use of doubletwist be related to my problem?

As per my post in the other thread, this method seemed to sort the problem when I had a similar issue. Not sure if you're using a different launcher, but that is what caused the problem for me. Changing to TW didn't help even after killing the other launcher (ADW or Pro). However, once set to default (TW), I could reboot the phone and it would connect fine (without flicking on and off). There's no real need to Keis though if all your contacts are with Google as USB storage mode is more convenient.
I had this problem too. It was caused because only in idle mode of the Samsung home launcher can keis connect. You may have installed a different launcher. Try the following:
Put usb to keis mode in settings
download home switcher from the market
run home switcher an set touchwiz as default home
Reboot phone (task killing other launchers don't work for me.)
make you phone is in the home screen - press home to get there
now connect the cable with keis running on pc
sync everything you need to
In future I suggest you move all contact to Google so they sync over the air and you'll no longer need keis. crappy software!
Thanks so much.
I got launcher switcher and it listed my launcher as unknown. I just switched it to touchwiz and set that as default.
Once i get home i will restart the phone and test connecting with kies.
Thanks for the QUICK reply.

So your recommendation did not work for me.
What did work is actually unmounting the internal sd card and formatting it.
Unfortunately My camera is crashing when i open it.
Funny thing is that my phone sseems so fast now (no lag).

Same problem here and I never used Odin. Must be something different ... any ideas are welcome.
BTW: which latest firmware did you install?
Has anyone of you for whom formating the internal SD card solves the problem installed SoundHound? I spent the last hours with formating the SD card and then copying back my data piece by piece and by this I found out that the "soundhound" folder is the thing which leads to the problem. I have all my data back on the internal SD card except for the "soundhound" folder and the connection works! If I now copy this folder back the problem of the restarting "MTP Application" returns. If I now delete the folder again it is working again! So at least for me SoundHound or furthermore it's folder on the internal SD clearly is the problem! Also if I copy the folder to the external SD card instead of the internal one, the MTP connection does not work and if I delete it again it works!
Can anyone confirm/reproduce this?
//edit: After looking to the content of the folder I would assume that the problem is that the MTP Application has a problem with specific file extensions since the folder only includes files with no or extreme long file extensions.
Thanks! same here, soundhound is the problem.
I must say that Soundhound itself is not the problem. The long file extensions of the saved files are the problem. They're more apps which use such files like e.g. the skyfire browser. Just delete them and it will work again.

Thanks a TON. I mounted my card in the data storage mode, opened the internal card in my computer and did a search for *.*, switched to detail view, sorted by file type. There were several files with long extensions in the folder "TunnyBrowser" which is created by DolphinBrowser HD. I uninstalled it, deleted the folder and now it connects fine again!
SoundHound + Kies issue fixed
Hi guys,
I am a developer at SoundHound and am responsible for our Android app. Sorry to hear about the problem you've been having with our app and the Samsung Kies software.
Just wanted to let you know that we've updated our app to be compatible with the Samsung Kies MTP sync software. As has been mentioned in this post, the problem is caused by files on the SD card with long or missing file extensions.
So please upgrade to the latest version of SoundHound on the Android Market. If you uninstalled SoundHound because of this issue, I hope you'll give us another shot!
Naturally, we can't do anything about other apps that generate these offending filenames.
If you continue to have any problems, please feel free to respond to this post or PM me.
Thanks!
Rico

Flash won't rewrite

The flash storage on my nexus 7 seems to not be rewriting like it should, when i pull it up in Windows i can see and delete things from the MTP interface. But when i use a file manager (OI File Manager) i can see the files once more and get an error when i attempt to delete them. i have done the Backup & Reset option within android after attempting a full data reset in ClockworkMod Recovery. At this point i am scratching my head. i am downloading another rom and will flash and post what i get from that.
Anyone else have this strange issue?
I've noticed this as well, anything I delete with ES File Explorer still shows up when it's plugged into my macbook but isn't actually accessible, I'm still on the stock ROM.

Nope, not even rooted, not really a big issue since I mostly use airdroid to transfer files but it would be nice to fix it.

The next thing i am going to do is return to stock, a complete re-flash to see if it empties the storage, I am posting all my theories so that anyone with the same issue could easily follow.
Success!
Using Wugfish Nexus Toolkit, my problem appears to have been solved. whether it is a perminant fix or not has yet to be known.

Apps can't see media files

I don't know why but all my media apps cannot see the files but when I browse the file tree I can play them from there... this started happening about 2 weeks ago... I have tried different ROMs, reloading the files from my computer and fixing permissions but it still is broken...
Any advice would be great...
Apps in question are Google music, n7 player, win amp...

Check for a file called .nomedia I think it is, and if it exists, delete it

What folder would I look for this file ...

I think the. Nomedia files is not the problem... cause i remove it already... n it didn't work....
U have to transfer the data using on windows 7 or 8...
they'r support it... files u'r copying from usb, from cloud will not show up on gallery.... it happens to me.. but, i can play it tough.... try this apps... wifi file transfer....
Upload the data depend on the files type... it should be work....

So I decided to crack flash some ROMs and for some reason after flashing miui my files are back and visible... I flashed back to paranoid android and it works again... not sure why but thats how I got it to work
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I had the same problem the other day... not with the N7 but with another android phone. It turns out after a google search that somebody said the recent ROM Manager update sticks a .nomedia file at the root level of the sd card causing nothing to be found. Low and behold, there was a .nomedia file at the root level. So I deleted it, but it seemed not to work. I gave up and decided to back up the sd card and wipe it... but after several minutes of copying files over usb to the pc, the media files appeared again after I unplugged the phone. I guess it just takes a bit of time.
If it is in fact the fault of ROM Manager, whatever possessed the developer to put a .nomedia file at the root level of the sd card is beyond me. Nevertheless, I've uninstalled it - not because of this, but because I rarely ever use it.

File system error?

I was copying a file from my computer to my nexus 7 and it didn't seem to be copying after a while so I stupidly unplugged it.
Now a ton of folders are missing from my main storage. Seems like file system errors but not sure what tools to attempt to fix it with.
Thanks for any help.
Decided to just backup and do a wipe and reset of my tablet.
Have you tried looking at them with ADB?

shows the same folders that my N7 mounted as a media device and File Explorer app shows. A lot of stuff is missing.
bump
I really wish I could fix my tablet :crying:
I'm scared to use it until I fix it.
Here's the folders it shows now, there were about 15 or so folders before, such as data, screenshots, videos, documents, downloads, and many others.
My tablet is rooted with clockwork mod recovery installed with motley anykernel nexus7 1.1.1 GPU 484 build 219
If it is deleted, I dont think you can do anythin :S try to show hidden files, we never knows

I've done the same stupid thing to a flash drive a couple times and windows check disk was able to repair it -_- I don't know what the equivalent tool for android would be though.
If I could only mount it to my computer as a mass storage device instead of a MTP device but N7 only gives you a choice between MTP and PTP
also hidden files makes no difference

[Q] Strange issues with my storage...?

Hi all, first time asking a question on Nexus 4
Days ago I decided to upgrade CM10.2 from an earlier nightly (build number JSS15Q) to a newer one (JLS36C), so I dirty flashed and everything seemed fine at first, but:
1) When I connect my N4 to the PC, it links up in MTD mode, I can read, copy, rename and delete contents from it, but I just can't put anything into it. It says something like "device is offline or has stopped responding". I thought it was a random issue so I ignored it.
2) One day later, a nightly with build number JLS36G dropped, and I want to back up my data with Titanium Backup before I do a clean flash. I knew previously that to use TiBu on 4.3, the backup folder has to be manually changed, and this worked for me before. This time, however, even after changing folders, TiBu still reported "insufficient backup space" no matter what I do.
3) Yesterday I wanted to upgrade some softwares on the phone, but many installs fail with "out of space" alert, while I confirmed that I have plenty (5GB+) internal storage left.
4) And today I am using Root Explorer to manage files. I just want to move a file to another folder. I created the folder with success, but pasting operation failed, still because of "not enough space". The same happens for CM's File Manager.
Now I'm out of ideas. The best bet is to start over from a clean flash, but since TiBu is unusable, I will lose all my SMS/call log, which I can't swallow. I'd be very grateful if anyone can tell me what's behind all these issues, or/and can teach me how to back up SMS/call log with a file manager. Thanks in advance
***EDIT***: I figured out how to manually backup/restore my SMS/call log, and went on to do a clean install, but even after a clean install, Root Explorer still reports insufficient free space. I can install softwares normally, though.

I'm pretty sure of that. I have 7.6GB files on the phone (calculated by copying all files out and checking their size using Windows), so free space should reasonably be 5GB. All softwares on the phone report this value too.

Wipe cache, dalvik, data, system (yeah I'm not that noob-ish to forget this), and install the downloaded package. I didn't install any mods after that. Clean enough, I guess.

An update to this situation: I think that using a factory image I might be able to "clear" the partitions and hoprfully revive my storage, but when I tried to back up all my contents in storage to PC using MTP connection, it got stuck at "calculating time needed for copying files" or sth like that. I have ~3GB of (unsynced, of course - I'm in China) music and some precious data I don't wanna lose, and at this size I couldn't back them up on the clouds. What to do now?
