[Q] Advice with my new nexus 7 - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey people!
So I recently purchased a Nexus 7 1st gen, not a new device but for what I need the device for, I figured I didnt need to spend money on extra power, not just yet anyhow.
I shall be doing multiple things with my nexus which includes
Netflix (Already have app)
Image editing (Have Photoshop)
But I'm looking for a list of applications that people would recommend, Purchased apps are also there for the taking.
I want to improve my audio via an equalizer, DSP? I'm unsure if that is a decent application for audio compared to other applications.
Good games? I like RPGs, FPS, Racing and casual games.
Email application? I have boomerang atm.
Best launcher? Currently using Holo HD.
Any other personally recommended apps from you people?
So what apps would you recommend, Im already rooted with custom ROM and Kernel (Paranoid and Franco)
Also what settings would you say towards a better battery life with minimal performance decrease? I dont use Overclocking.
Thanks in advance!

Undecided on path to follow

As many will know I've recently gotten a Note which is quite franlkly amazing albeit has no real ICS or sources for ICS.
The trending I've seen of late on XDA has gotten my newfound mind thinking a lot.
I have a crespo project which is admittedly my first break from the norm and sort of minimalist mp3 listener, web browser and vpn minded (which I hope you all are) and its damned fast. But at the same time I've a Galaxy Note yearning which has seen me for the first time start a kernel and port Oxygen to the note for starters.
I sold one of my Nexus S on eBay last night for a paltry sum to help paying for the £400 I paid for the Note and the low sell price made me think about where my loyalties are.
In realistic terms I may now release something for Note which is a very very lite CM9 but I want to be here with my good friends.
Please let me know whats the score for a want in a lite ROM offering other than listening to music (and I guarantee alongside voodoo I have achieved more than a latency placebo) and browsing you need. As you know I dont like to waste time on toggles or nonsense. I want to demolish the shiz in what becomes your framework at the other end.
You know I'm always with you, wp my man. Your Pixel ROMs are one of the best I've used and I would gladly take up anything lite and streamlined that you'll make for crespo. I think I've managed to wean myself off of heavily modded ROMs and would choose a fast, stable driver any time over anything unstable. If you need testers, I would gladly try out stuffs for you. otherwise, I'll be looking forward to your next offerings for crespo.

I back the idea 100%. While there are more economical (price and portability) choices for on-the-go music, my phone has become my primary source. There are plenty of feature-heavy roms out there and as of lately, I have been setting up my phone for minimalistic use. After I'm done deleting apps and services with Titanium, I'm left with a bare-bones build with my music and video player. I don't even care about gmail. Stock contacts, texting and calling, dolphin browser, poweramp and mx video. No games; no fancy themes; no resource-hogging apps; just talk, text, and occasional video/browsing.
All for it as long as the fundamentals are there (I know i wont be disappointed here ). Like the others, happy to help with testing and the like and will be looking forward to any upcoming projects.
I'm in ...
You might want to look at what krarvind has done with slim ics (also i think cm9 has it) the usb mounting options. MTP in particular is amazingly fast, and you can still use your apps while transferring data. There may be some kernel work involved, but krarvind had some help if i remember correctly. I can dig the name of the assistant up if you like.
can someone reiterate the OP for me please?
edit: oh he's making a ROM.
sure if if differnt and still ICS and can still tether ill try it out.

[Q] The state of custom ROMs for Nexus 7, and forcing tablet mode?

After receipt of my first Nexus 7 last week I can say I'm extremely pleased with my purchase and first foray into the tablet world.
What I'm not so pleased with is the lack of tablet view on many apps. The way things are displayed often leaves a lot to be desired on such a beautiful display.
As I understand it, there are several ways you can fool the UI into going into tablet mode on a system or per app basis, using either hacks or custom ROMs.
Ideally I would like to be able to flash my nexus 7 with a custom ROM like Paranoid Android, however as I am new to the scene, I thought it worth finding out:
1) How stable are the ROMs available for the Nexus 7? I've heard paranoid android does dpi per app, does this work well?
2) How many apps actually take advantage of the tablet UI? ie. if I do mod my nexus7 will it make that big a difference?
3) Are there any good reasons (except warranty) to leave my tablet running stock?

1 - Some of the ROM's are very stable, I would stick with a well known dev such as Football or Faux (yes I know faux is kernels). So paranoid android is probably a good route to go down.
2 - In my experience, only the most well known apps, such as G-Mail, Hotmail etc take advantage of the Tablet mode, but more may come when tablets take a bigger chunk of the market, which they are beggining to do so, and fast !
3 - I wouldn't leave it stock if I was you, I would definatly root for OTG etc, but the stock ROM etc is buttery smooth and I couldn't imagine using a custom ROM.
THE ONLY CUSTOM ROM THAT HAS EVER !!!! MADE ME FEEL LIKE USING A CUSTOM ROM IS ViperX, and they don't do a tablet ROM I don't think.
Hope this helps.
The M-series release of CM10 is quite stable. And the default phablet mode of n7 is quite good actually, at least for me personally.

Paranoid android works perfectly for me
A combo of SmoothROM and 'bricked' kernel have been fast and stable for me in the past
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1899024
The Bricked Kernel dev is also hard at work on a new feature for his kernel, this apparently doesn't affect the device sleeping.

[Q] Root N7 or not, for what I use it for?

Hi all,
First post as just registered here but XDA seems to be the best place for this subject by far.
Should I root and unlock, install kernel, overclock etc?
I use it for:
-Emails (Business & personal)
-Web browsing (a lot)
-Some games (but simple ones)
-Viewing and editing (slightly) Images.
-Google Analytics/Ads/Drive
-CRM database etc
In addition to the above question, I want to now if overclocking to 1.4, 1.5 or 1.6 ghz or install would make the N7 smoother and faster for these general things? I wont be 'gaming' or doing anything massively graphics or processor intensive (I dont think?)

Based on your uses I'd leave it stock...you could however install a custom kernel and squeeze some more battery life out of it.
Risk and Difficulty?

Ok thanks, I have thought about battery life however I am willing to sacrifice a little battery for more speed. Do you think you'd notice the difference? In terms of smoothness and speed on general activities? Also one BIG question(s), how hard it is and how risky is it to root from Mac? Whats the likelihood of me ruining my device, for good? Are we saying 1 in 1000 or for a rookie like me a toss of a coin?
I have watched a few videos and find it pretty amazing what you can do to a phone or tablet. Especially by yourself.

Hi, iAmlearning...
Based on your needs... I would say... stay stock, but root...
You can then run apps like Titanium (always useful for backing up those Temple Run 2 high scores.. or running AdAway (for getting rid of those pesky, annoying ads that seem to crop up just about everywhere...)
As far as risk is concerned... well, it's not really quantifiable... there is ALWAYS the possibility you might hard-brick the thing... but then, you might drop it on the kitchen floor tomorrow!
I'd be a liar if I said the Nexus 7 was 'unbrickable' ... it is eminently 'brickable'! But it's actually kind of hard to do! And if you follow many of the excellent instructions here on XDA, you should be OK. (Actually, rooting is a piece of cake - people make too much of it.)
Finally... rooting involves unlocking the BOOTLOADER... which WIPES the device and performs a FACTORY RESET... so I would suggest it might be done sooner rather than later... before you build up a lot of content on it (not that it can't be backed up elsewhere beforehand).
Once you have root, you can then think about custom ROMs and kernels much later.
But root is you're gateway.
Rgrds,
Ged.

Doesn't sound like you really need to root. If you get sick of the interface or whatever you can always install a launcher like Nova Prime and play around with it. The things you can do without being rooted is pretty amazing.
Overclocking it to 1.4 Ghz won't make a huge difference, but overclocking to 1.8 Ghz will. It will also drain your battery a lot faster - something to think about. I'm one of the under clockers to preserve battery.
One further question?

You have probably answered my question, I am a bit scared to overclock past 1.4 or 1.5 due to the heat and me not really knowing what I am doing and as the battery life is fairly important I might just leave as stock.
However like a few people advise I may try to give the rooting a go.... or maybe find a cheap used tablet or handset and try it on that first?
Would be great to get rid of the adverts.
Question - I have heard that some of these customer ROM's take away the unnecessary junk from the OS and make things smoother and faster? Would this be more worthwhile than overclocking if I were to do just one? Also any ROM's for this purpose that people recommend?
Thans again everyone
Well because the device is a Nexus device, it comes very clean as default. Not really any junk on the device to slow it down, even though that "junk" is relative. For example, I live in Europe and Google Play Music does not work over here, so I've disabled it. I've also disabled Google Currents, and any other built in apps that I simply do not use. Now it's like those apps are not even on my device - they are just dead.
If we were talking about a Samsung tablet, then yes I would say root it. Because rooting would allow you to get rid of Samsung's Touchwiz interface, which can be a bit of a RAM hog. But the Nexus 7 doesn't have such a problem, it's already stock and very smooth.
I can tell that you're very interested in this stuff and you will most probably root in the near future. However, my advice to you would be to just use and enjoy the device as it is right now, but in the mean time just read about how to unlock bootloaders, rooting, custom ROM's.. read as much as you can. You'll get more familiar with the process and the terminology, and it will be a big help when it comes time to root two months down the line.
One custom ROM I can recommend is Paranoid Android. Truthfully, it's the only one I can recommend because its the only one I've flashed. I like it, but does it make a huge difference from stock in terms of speed? Not really. It has a load of other cool features, though.
If all you're interested in is battery life and performance, rooting and a custom kernel would suffice. However for what you say you'll be using it for, not really needed. The nexus line is super simple to root and play around on though. It all sounds way more complicated than it really is.

Quite impressed that you can determine this, as its 100% correct. I am probably going to do this at some point, but maybe not just yet, I think I need to get comfortable with the process and research a bit more about it all. Also, I am actually very impressed with the Nexus 7 as it id and coming from an Apple iPhone 5 and iPad 3, I can safely say that I'd not go back to either after this. I used to think Apple had it all in terms of functionality and innovation, however in recent years they have almost made backwards steps.
But thanks for the response, I keep seeing the Paranoid ROM around and on signatures. So may give that a go.

I wouldnt root it for the uses you are indicating, BUT from your post I can already see that you eventually will. My advise is set a saturday or friday night aside and get this done sooner than later. Its just easier because this device not having an SD card will make it difficult to restore data and things that you have already done on it ( I got it two days ago and still havent rooted but am already worreid about some of the work ). The thing that usually helps me the most is youtube. Read a lot but have a good comprehensive detailed youtube video of teh rooting method you decide to follow and just follow along with the video. I have rooted 3 phones using that method and have yet to brick anything.

suggestion needed!!

hello guys, my father changed phones and left me the legendary htc hd2. so i started playing putting android on it so i can use it as a secondary device or as gps/media center in the car.
being a nexus user i know that android 5 is kind of bugged an possibly heavier than 4.4 that why i choose to install ChauTien SlimKat 4.4.4.
So my big question is: what rom (or kernel) do you recommend to install on the legend for best performance and/or battery life? is there any specific tweak that i should do to the device??
thank you in advance!

I just used the carbon rom (as far as im aware there only is one carbon rom for this phone) as i had it for long on my nexus and really like it. I tried quite a few roms but in reality on android you will always have long app launch times and some UI lag. In terms of absolute smoothness the WP 7.8 easily wins. Not a single bit of lag at all, only annoying problem is getting the thing activated to use the app store as i couldn't find a way to get into a chat with microsoft on their website(might just be the case like a lot of times, that i missed it somewhere really obvious). Avoid android 5 roms, the performance is horrifying. Tested android 6, and it is a little better but still i think that 4.1-4.4 roms are the best if you need android. On android 4.1-4.4 after the long loading of a app is done i found graphical performance quite okay and hill climb racing ran with only minimal lag every once in a while (totally playable), but didn't even get into the actual game on android 5. It also helps a lot to disable HW overlay and force gpu in developer settings as it gets rid of most UI lag.

Reviving and rooting an old Nexus 7

Hi. Just wondering if you guys could update me on which ROM would be the best to go for to revive a couple of old nexus' for the kids to use for browsing, YouTube and a few games
I've hunted around a fair bit and settled on a 4.4.4 index build followed by mkernel a69 then upsated to faux123 kernel for tweaking??
Or are there any gems I'm missing. Maybe a install and forget ROM?
Thanks in advance
Sam
I still have my old 7 running, but compared to even older phones I still keep here its a pain to use, especially with games.
I think the lack of RAM (1GB is installed only) is the issue and this cannot be improved.
I'm thinking of making some decent use by using it as a web radio player - but I kind of lack the use for one.
I really liked the size for browsing the web, but it has become too slow for me.
However I will try this now:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-7/development/rom-android-7-aosp-grouper-t3467514
maybe it proves me wrong
I was able to reimage mine from the 5.0.2 (or whatever the highest stock os was) to the better-running 4.4.4 by following a video on youtube from mojolevel.
