Undecided on path to follow - Nexus S General

As many will know I've recently gotten a Note which is quite franlkly amazing albeit has no real ICS or sources for ICS.
The trending I've seen of late on XDA has gotten my newfound mind thinking a lot.
I have a crespo project which is admittedly my first break from the norm and sort of minimalist mp3 listener, web browser and vpn minded (which I hope you all are) and its damned fast. But at the same time I've a Galaxy Note yearning which has seen me for the first time start a kernel and port Oxygen to the note for starters.
I sold one of my Nexus S on eBay last night for a paltry sum to help paying for the £400 I paid for the Note and the low sell price made me think about where my loyalties are.
In realistic terms I may now release something for Note which is a very very lite CM9 but I want to be here with my good friends.
Please let me know whats the score for a want in a lite ROM offering other than listening to music (and I guarantee alongside voodoo I have achieved more than a latency placebo) and browsing you need. As you know I dont like to waste time on toggles or nonsense. I want to demolish the shiz in what becomes your framework at the other end.

You know I'm always with you, wp my man. Your Pixel ROMs are one of the best I've used and I would gladly take up anything lite and streamlined that you'll make for crespo. I think I've managed to wean myself off of heavily modded ROMs and would choose a fast, stable driver any time over anything unstable. If you need testers, I would gladly try out stuffs for you. otherwise, I'll be looking forward to your next offerings for crespo.

I back the idea 100%. While there are more economical (price and portability) choices for on-the-go music, my phone has become my primary source. There are plenty of feature-heavy roms out there and as of lately, I have been setting up my phone for minimalistic use. After I'm done deleting apps and services with Titanium, I'm left with a bare-bones build with my music and video player. I don't even care about gmail. Stock contacts, texting and calling, dolphin browser, poweramp and mx video. No games; no fancy themes; no resource-hogging apps; just talk, text, and occasional video/browsing.

All for it as long as the fundamentals are there (I know i wont be disappointed here ). Like the others, happy to help with testing and the like and will be looking forward to any upcoming projects.

I'm in ...

You might want to look at what krarvind has done with slim ics (also i think cm9 has it) the usb mounting options. MTP in particular is amazingly fast, and you can still use your apps while transferring data. There may be some kernel work involved, but krarvind had some help if i remember correctly. I can dig the name of the assistant up if you like.

can someone reiterate the OP for me please?
edit: oh he's making a ROM.
sure if if differnt and still ICS and can still tether ill try it out.

Stable Gingerbread build for daily yet?

Sometimes interpreting all the [tags] and t3Rmin0logy in the dev forum can be a bit of a headache for us non-dev types who are just looking for the latest and greatest ROMs and kernels to try out without necessarily compiling something from scratch.
So that's why I made this post. I'm really interested in trying out a Gingerbread 2.3 ROM but I'm not sure what the general consensus is on this without reading several hundred posts/replies.
Can anyone with insight summarize?
Basically, you won't have a stable gingerbread release until:
- CM7 is declared stable (for AOSP roms)
- HTC releases a gingerbread ROM themselves (for Sense roms)
Neither of those appear to be about to happen in the immediate future. So for now, I don't think any of them are officially considered stable for daily use.
Ive been using the ROM in this thread as my daily driver for a while now. Enjoy
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877653
Been running evervolv since the beginning and I use it as my daily. I absolutely love it. The only problem right now is the gps works great for some and off and on for others but the developer has added the app gps status to the newest build and the gps seems very stable now as a result. Also, as of right now the camcorder doesnt work but it is being worked on. Other than that u just have the other issues like u would with any other aosp rom. Which is no 4g and no hdmi. But if your wanting to try gb I highly recommend this rom. The developer is awesome and it's been updated almost nightly. Like I said, I've been using it everyday since it's been out and haven't regretted it one bit. Hope that helps.

I would have to disagree with that. Like I just stated, I've been using evervolv as my daily and haven't thought twice about it. Besides gps being a little shaky and no video recording I would have to say it's been as stable as any other rom I've ran and I've ran almost all of them.

i'm running the cm7 rc0 right now and it is pretty sweet. i wont be using it as a daily driver because i love sense's widgets especially the task one. but if you like aosp roms then it is your dream.

You don't need video recording or GPS? Or is that fixed now? I've been watching the thread (not lately though because of the holiday) and all that still needs work. I'd love to use this ROM as a daily driver but I need video rec. and GPS/Latitude/Sprint Family Locator are a must.

Well video and gps aren't really that important to me but actually gps is working fine for me on evervolv's latest release. So for what I need it to do it's extremely stable. Just depends on what your needs are.

Shaky GPS + no video = GARBAGE. I don't think most people use the Evo just for phone calls. Myn's rom with the gingerbread keyboard has been more then enough to hold me over until he comes out with a 2.3 rom. CM is cool n all but no 4G or HDMI is wack. If you bought the evo to use all its features and not because it looks like an oversized iphone, just stick with Myn and try to be patient.

I'm so sorry I like aosp more than 4g. 4g only makes tethering faster our browser and stuff will still process at low kilobit rates

I've been using the GB rom posted by AndroidBall as a daily driver and have been very pleased. Camcorder FC and obviously no 4G (none in my area anyway) and no HDMI (no need), but otherwise rock solid and incredibly fast. The most impressive aspect of GB, or at least this rom, has been the battery life. As good as any rom I've ever tried and way better than any AOSP rom I've used previously. That alone is reason enough to stick with a somewhat incomplete version of GB for now.

mmm....and patience just oozes from your post.
assuming someone is able to read the OP on a given thread, they should be able to identify what is working vs not working. so long as the 'not workings' do not impact that user then it's fine.
some folks don't live in 4G areas and others (like myself) live in a 4G area but haven't missed it that much. although a second radio would be handy so Trillian doesn't loose connection when i get a phone call. Other folks feel that 4G is either a requisite or their god-given-right (the last one usually points out the $10 fee as their landmark).
and i haven't gone out to buy that $30 cable so i can watch 720p movies on my 1080p TV. my home network is setup to handle that task.
some folks just plain don't like using Sense or prefer to support/use ASOP as much as possible. many folks have commented on the speed and fun-features of CM.
that being said, the CM7RC0 is stable for standard usage (ie: it doesn't randomly reboot or try to melt your sdcard or format your home computer and is no long likely to try to kill your kitten. it has not reached RC1, which kinda means it's not done cooking (so...keep an eye on the kitten). I would expect a RC1 in the not too distant future. i've been using this thread .... just make sure to read the OP for things working vs not working.
when CM7 is released it should come wimax and maybe the upgraded hdmi.
what i like about Lithid's thread is that he doesn't try to take responsibly for the ROM. he just gave some good instructions on how to compile from the CM repo so that i can do it myself whenever i like. not that i'm likely to continue once the nightlys are back.

I wouldnt call them garbage but I agree with you in the point you made about not using a rom thats not 100% functional. Pretty much the main reason I stick with the sense roms.
I guess I just like my phones features to actually function. Guess that's a wild idea. $30 for micro hdmi to hdmi? Try $5.80 @ monoprice for 10 ft. and good quality too. Don't wanna watch 720p on your 1080p tv? No neither would I but you might wanna play a game you have on your phone, including all the roms you could have, on your tv. Or you could play 720p video that you shot on your phone on your big hdtv, but your rom might not even record video so so much for that idea. Why would you not want those things to work.
Its like: I got a keyboard to sell you, trouble is only 20 letters still work, but you probably don't use those anyway, still want it?
Sent from my Evo 4G running Warm TwoPointTwo using the XDA app
Please try and stop being so defensive, Welsh. 4g and HDMI out are really cool features. I don't think anyone is going to argue that point with you. But for a lot of people, they are just not used much, if at all. Do I want to be able to plug my phone into my TV? Heck yes. And I have a cable for it. But why on earth would I ever need to do that? I have 5 computers I can hook up to my tv, plus a 360, ps3, wii, etc.
The only real use of the hdmi out, at least for me, is that I can take it to someone else's house and plug it into their tv, but I've never done that. I doubt I ever will, either, so it's a feature that I personally don't use.
Then there's 4g, which is another really cool feature that doesn't get much use. I have 4g where I'm at, but I also almost always have wifi, too, so again, I almost never use the feature. Also remember that a lot of people don't even get 4g service, so they can't use it.
A better keyboard analogy is this: I've got a keyboard to sell you. It's probably the nicest keyboard you'll ever use, but it has no function keys or a caps lock.
As long as you don't actually use the function keys or the caps lock, then the keyboard is a great choice. Similarly, Cyanogenmod is (in my opinion, of course) the best rom for this phone. Sure, it's missing some features (features that are being worked on, by the way). But I don't use them, so I'm not going to miss them. There's no need to get hostile.

Problem is nothing is being sold or paid and there is no implied 100% functionality from the developers. I'd almost say if you want 100%, Sense and taking it a little further, Stock OEM Rom is your only real bet. Even the cleanest custom Sense Roms have little quirks.
So being overly critical of the "gifts" being given (by way of these Roms) is a little sh*tty but don't get me wrong, to each their own, people can gripe to the high heavens as it's just how people can be.
Everevolv has been very solid for me but I will deal with no 4G and no video recording (are these really that big of a deal to so many people?) and the Maps isn't essential BUT of all the things not working in this ASOP rom is the biggest in my mind... so I just don't get lost.
Anyone that has been in the "flashdance" game for awhile knows what we are getting ourselves into. If you aren't prepared, don't join this crowd. If you have a problem with a rom and would consider dogging it, then the easy thing to do is NOT FLASH IT. I really do think its bad taste to flame on about something you aren't paying and was provided freely and certainly not with malicious intent.
Maybe I'm just getting soft...

I guess what I meant was more about it being "officially" stable. I don't think any of the developers of the GB roms are advertising it as a stable build yet. Evervolv isn't even being called a beta yet -- the dev is quite clear in calling it an alpha. That doesn't mean it can't meet your needs just fine for daily use. But nobody's claiming to have a ROM that's intended to be as solid as a 2.2 ROM yet.
I also think that it's fair to say that until CM, which I think it looked to as the definitive AOSP ROM developer (no offense to those behind MIUI or any of the other devs) says that CM7 is ready for prime time, it's still not quite there. And it's definitely fair to say that until HTC releases a GB update (or at least we see a beta leak), we won't see any Sense GB ROMs, at least nothing beyond an experimental hybrid of the two.
I may have also read too much into the subject of the OP. The body makes it clear (s)he is looking to go cutting edge. But the subject said stable for daily use, and I read that in the more stricter sense of whether something is declared stable.

True. I suppose "Stable" really is subjective. I have no boot loops or randomness FC's or reboots, that's stable to me. A romrom that is stable yet completely unfunctional is no good but stable and hitting on most of the core functions of the phone works for somw, not for others.
Good post and who knows, the OP may have yet another idea of what stable is to them.

.. desiring to have all the features work on your device makes total sense to me. but why should i cry over spilled milk when i don't use/drink milk?
.. like cole said, the only time i can see a use for the hdmi is if put a movie on my sdcard and went over to a friends house. yeah, that would be kinda slick. but i'd have to make sure to remember to bring the cable with me. which if you knew me...would make you laugh. prolly should get a larger sdcard as well.
.. i play real games on my big screen not AngryBirds or PenguinToss. i have taken only 3 or 4 video recordings with my evo since i got it opening weekend. all of them were me just testing/playing with settings.
.. if i like the keyboard and i don't use those keys, sure. the reverse would be like saying it's stoopid to buy a sports car (Corvette, Ferrari, Bugatti, etc) because you cannot use the primary feature set. or the avg single person using a SUV for their daily commute should take the train or ride a bike/moped.
do you you see what is trying to be conveyed here?
not everyone uses the device in the same way. this is a fine and wonderful thing. so long as we are aware that others may try to use the device in ways that we don't even think of. it's wise of us to remember this and be open to different utilization needs/desires. for example, one person is unable to migrate to CM6 due to no 4G. for them 4G was a real big deal since they tethered their pc to it everyday. i have yet to tether my device other than to show off. for someone else, they require GPS to be rock solid, i use it rarely. i do like the idea that i can compile my own OS, most folks don't give a ****. i like that i'm running an AOSP ROM, many folks don't know what it means or why some consider it important. do you see where i'm coming from? i don't slam your Sense based ROM's because they are slow and kludgey compared to CM. actually, if you want to know the gods honest truth...what i miss MOST from the Sense based ROMs....all over Copy/Paste and integrated FB picture sync to the contact list. those are features that feel i 'gave up' in order to run CM, not HDMI or 4G.
oh yeah, we are also discussing a RC0 ROM. do you know what RC0 means? it means the Dev's consider the ROM not ready for public consumption. it hasn't even reached official RC1 (aka: Beta). and i'll still run it before i run a Sense based ROM. every time i load a Sense ROM, my device is back onto CM before the following sunset occurs. but that is MY choice. it is MY preference. now gfowygdfsbrtbs.

CM7 relevance on the Atrix

A little history: 4 years ago i bought and owned (still own) a G1 - HTC Dream - and ever since custom Android roms were available I have been very happy to try out the latest and greatest. I think jesusfreke being the first but cant remember now its such a long time ago. Then along came cyanogen with hhis rom, brilliant. There were so many new options and the speed increase was great. and because of this rom I kept my G1 for over 3 years as my main phone. When the time came that cyanogen stopped supporting the G1 I decided it was time for an upgrade and decided I would get the Atrix based on its powerful specs and all of the other amazing features it has.
So 8 months on I now have an Atrix on which I have tried nearly all available roms and am currently running the latest version of Aura. (not an endorsement for Aura, simply a statement). Included in my trials was CM7, which i was so excited about when i first heard that development was happening. However since installing CM7 and trying it out for around a month I have to say that amongst all of the other roms for the Atrix it is not the holy grail that it has been on other phones. In fact in its current incarnation its relevance it questionable on the Atrix particularly when reading that the devs are struggling to find solutions to getting some of the features working.
I know that there are many people that bought the Atrix because it was powerful. But, it does have other features that, although not unique are certainly what helps to give the Atrix an edge over the competition. Webtop for example is a feature that used only ocassionally is a valuable asset to the device and simply discard it at for a tweak that boosts performance by mere micro seconds is a poor trade. it would be the same as buying a convertible ferrari and removing the button that puts the roof down - it saved some weight and the car can now accelerate to 60mph marginally faster but you cant put the roof down anymore. So you might as well have bought a hard top ferrari which already went faster. The same theory as buying the Atrix, if you want that extra bit of speed, might as well buy the SGSII.
So, there it is. Thats why i run a different rom at the moment, because all of the features are available and quite honestly with a bit of tweaking i can no longer either see of feel any difference in speed to CM7 and my battery lasts a perfectly acceptable amount of time for a smartphone (Depending on my usage). For those of you who might start mentioning blur as being the reason to move to CM7 that is another area where devs of other custom roms have done a fine job of removing anything really noticable and anything else that I found annoying I simply used TB and personal preference to sort out. (Although i havent yet figured out the accounts manager and anyway of getting rid of that awful blur interface. Maybe one day)
In conclusion, no ROM is perfect and as much as I admire the devs work I simply don't think that CM7 is relevant on the Atrix.
Thoughts?
i think it greatly depends on what your needs/desires are for your phone. i bought my atrix with zero intentions of using the fingerprint scanner or webtop. in the months before CM7 came out, i never even tried them out on stock or custom ROMs.
i really enjoy the extra features that CM7 adds to my atrix (however small they may be). the only downside ive experienced is inconsistent battery behavior, but i cant narrow it down so im not even sure its a cyanogen thing.
any ROM is relevant if there are people who want to use it. it may not be relevant for you, or anyone who is set on webtop/FPS. but to each his own. thats the beauty of open-source right??
It's to each their own, I guess. If someone wants CM7 on their phone, they're going to go for it. Some people are benchmark fiends, others just like the feel of it.
Completely agreed with fischwrap. Many people bought the Atrix because it was the fastest phone at release date, or the best price/performance ratio one. That people might or might not care about the fingerprint scanner (a lot of people in fact don't like the power button placement and use volume to wake, some others don't even use a lockscreen, let alone a fingerprint scanner) or about webtop (believe it or not people without HDTVs or LCDs exist )
And I know the 'don't care or need' side has at least 5300 people on it

Same here. I also purchased it with eager anticipation that devs would also get it for the same reasons and port CM7. You guys kick major ass. Took a bit more blood, sweat and tears because of the bootloader but our Atrix's are rockin' now!f
i think the Atrix can truly shine regardless of what ROM you use. it's an extremely powerful phone and that will show in any comparison. The kernel plays a very large part in determining performance as well though. Even if you are on standard clock speeds with one of faux's kernels you'll have amazing benchmarks and real world results, and even more so if you choose to overclock. CM7 is a great ROM for every phone, and i don't believe it's relevance to the atrix should be in question, but merely its relevance to you. i've been an android guy for quite a while dating back to the G1 days as well (Do you remember the ROM bible? we need one of those for the Atrix! ) and i shed a silent tear when those forums got moved to the legacy and low activity sections. but this is much like when Sense ROMs started appearing for the G1. Bluetooth and Camera commonly didn't work on them, and some people said they wouldn't use Sense until those were fixed. FP Scanner and Webtop are tenfold less essential than either of those, yet some won't use CM7 until those are fixed. it really just comes down to what you look for in a phone and what you use the most.
I don't use webtop (although no fingerprint took me a long long time to get over), as such CM7 offers some features such as notification power management, being able to adjust lowest screen brightness, having control over when the phone vibrates, etc. THe extensive control CM7 allows you that other Motoblur based roms does not alone is really worth it for me. I can see your point but it's rather ridiculous to suggest CM7 is not relevant. It is still by far the best rom on Atrix at the moment if you're able to live w/o webtop/fingerprint scanner.

Legacy devices, yeah that's where my beloved tilt(Kaiser) got moved to. I love Android but I do miss the kaiser days I remember running android from the sd card on the kaiser lol. At first touch screen was not working, no camera, no bluetooth, no wifi, and by the time I left the kaiser they had that stuff working.

I disagree. A rom may have those 2 features but run like a G1 while another can be missing those 2 features and run smooth as butter. It is dependent on taste but I'd pick the latter.
The thing that sets the Atrix apart was the FP and the webtop. I don't use either, and I use cm7.
But without those 2 features enabled, it just another phone. Fast phone tthough. But not the best rom, IMO.
Homebase is the best rom for THIS phone. Smooth as butter and full functionality of the phone. I love CyanogenMod, its fast as hell, very stable. But it does the same stuff my little Aria does.
I'm tired, don't know if this makes sense to anyone else.

I agree that CM7 is not the perfect rom and sacrifices are required. However, using Blurr-based roms you're also sacrificing the functionality of CM7. And judging from the number of people flashing CM7, at significant part of the community prefers the CM7 functionality over fingerprint and webtop.
I feel this both suggests there is a big part for CM7 and it should be in the conversation of one of the best roms. Hopefully one day Blur-based roms will integrate CM7's customizability (unlikely) or CM7 will get a working fpscanner and webtop.
I think CM is more than relevant for the Atrix!
I have bought the Atrix with the lapdock and I have tested Motoblur as well as Aura and have used the lapdock. Before I have used a htc Hero with CM for nearly 2 years.
I really like the possibility of the lapdock in connection with a kind of webtop or similar functionality. But due to my long experience with CM on my Hero, I have tried CM-7.1 despite the fact that I do not have webtop or at least hdmi-mirroring in a sufficient screen-resolution, because I have missed the score of customization of CM.
And I am absolutely satisfied with CM. At least for my personal usage, it IS the best available ROM. It is faster and smother than the other, have many more convenient settings like configurable screens, buttons and LED-notification. Everything in an efficient way. And CM has an exceptional battery-life, I got roughly 30% more battery time.
OK, I am a little bit missing webtop, but I am hoping hdmi-mirroring will be working soon ;-) I have used the FP on Aura, but I really do not miss it, because I was used to unlock with menu-button with my hero, so I stick to that, because it is faster than FP.
If I could acquire a cheap Lapdock I would, I really want to use this phone to it's full potential.

I disagree. A rom may have those 2 features but run like a G1 while another can be missing those 2 features and run smooth as butter. It is dependent on taste but I'd pick the latter.

I don't think the CM7 mod can really be considered stable.
I have a good amount of trouble with lag, slow internet, fc's, and obviously the features that don't work.
Hopefully in time they can improve it more.
I've tried many roms on mine and finally decided to settle on stock 2.3.4 U.A.E retail. It is very nicely done.
CM7 is plenty relevant to the Atrix. If it weren't, then there wouldn't be 5,485 people using it (according to CM's official device statistics page*). A lot of people bought this phone for its raw power, and could care less about webtop or the fingerprint scanner. The team doing the port said they want to add that at some point, and the fingerprint scanner at least on some level is working on unreleased builds.
This isnt to mention that once an official (by CM) release is out, CM could provide an excellent base for ROM developers who dont like blur. Blur is fast on the Atrix, but still isnt as fast as vanilla android. Once ICS comes out, we'll definetly get it before blur roms do as well.
At the moment, blur roms have an edge in that they fully support the hardware and have more chances of being bug free. But it wont be long before that all changes.
If you want guaranteed stability, webtop or the fingerprint scanner, use a blur rom. Otherwise, use CM7. If you dont care and just want a phone, use stock. Just because some people prefer one type doesn't invalidate the significance of the other.

When you boot CM for the first time, you're given the option of sending them statistics data. That can be turned off at any time by going Settings > CM Settings > System > Anonymous statistics
Since its opt-in, there are probably more users than that.

GB to ICS and back - mini review

My month with a factory unlocked Galaxy S2
Bought this in mint condition from a friend for about half price with only 1 hour of use, an unwanted upgrade. Came with 2.3.4 as expected, so hooked up to Kies; no update at the time. As is my wont, I used the phone for a few days to get to grips with TouchWiz (TW) and the phone generally. All quite reasonable, no stability issues and TW is not bad by any means.
My thoughts and trials so far then:
Hardware
Well made, light and thin. Slippery, so a black rubbery skin bought and fitted and I popped a spare 8GB microSD card in, not that the phone needs it for my purposes.
Only criticism is the OLED screen, I'm used to higher resolution (Moto and Sony) and 800x480 looks rather "cheapo" in terms of detail on a screen this large, but no deal breaker. What I do find somewhat at odds with the price of the phone is the slight but noticeable shading and colour tints across the screen at low brightness levels and on some backgrounds. Plus, the screen's legibility outside on a bright day is no better than more run of the mill LCD screens. (I mean cheaper!)
My first GB update
I generally root phones straight after flashing a new firmware version, if it isn't already. I had already successfully rooted the original stock 2.3.4 firmware with Zergrush 4 and debloated that ROM.
I was keen to try a later GB version before trying ICS, and I found 2.3.6 for "Open Europe" on Sammobile and downloaded it. I had already tried Kies, so the USB drivers were present and working. I uninstalled Kies on the PC but left the USB drivers alone. Kies and Odin are not good bedfellows. I did a full factory reset on the phone and erased everything, allowed it to reboot and then powered off, got in to download mode and flashed XXKL1 (which is an engineering version and deodexed it seems). Rooted it via Zergrush 4, deleted known bloat and renamed possible bloat to xxx.bak to clean the ROM for my own usage, and deleted that very annoying start-up sound. Downloaded all the apps I normally use (about 22 of them), including the excellent CPU Spy to check for deep sleep.
I used/charged the phone over the next couple of days to let the OS bed in. No problems encountered at all, and a very pleasing battery life of 30+ hours of light use, with syncing and GPS, 3G, WiFi always on and occasional BT. Magic! Only thing I did is change the Modem to LPR - the KI3 Modem that came with the ROM is not quite as good at holding weak signals. Only just though...
My first ICS update
So, good phone, stable and very usable ROM in 2.3.6. Time had come to try this new ICS thing. Downloaded the LPQ version and installed it, after a full wipe, via Odin. Not impressed by all the automatic installation rubbish at first boot... Rooted via a hot boot CWM and SU/Busybox successfully and did all the same debloating and app installation as GB 2.3.6. Spent some time getting orientated and used to the new menus and so on.
Over the next day or so, I let the ROM settle and began using the ROM - I changed the Modem to LPR as LPQ was not as good, perception wise. ROM was stable and usable, didn't really look or feel much different from 2.3.6 and was worse on battery - I would say 18 hours at best with the same usage pattern.
Absolutely hate the new Exchange thing for live.com email.... real pain usability wise and battery unfriendly.
My second ICS update
So, not overly impressed with LPQ, although it was usable, I decided to try LP7, the UK generic one. Went through the same process as above, and again swapped the Modem from LPS (awful!) to LPR.
No obvious differences at all. Battery life was as poor, but it was usable.
My first CM trial - CM9
So, somewhat disillusioned by Samsung's ICS implementation, I decide to look around for another "mature" ROM. CM9 fitted the bill (I have used CM6 before on another phone) and was smack bang up to date in terms of kernel, AOSP and G Apps. After my usual clean deck start, installed fine, 23/04 build.
At first, I was quite impressed as I could configure more and to my liking. The ROM was stable and I set the phone up with the usual Apps and deleted some useless stuff (like GenieWidget).
Swapped Modem out to LPR - bit of a theme going on here...
I liked the fact that the Spirit FM radio worked (so bought the Pro version as it is that good). The ROM is very usable and never got bogged down, BUT, for reasons I never fully determined, the battery life would start OK and then decline faster during the day. I never saw more than 12 hours life, again using as per my normal pattern and after a few days to settle. There appeared to be various background activities going on that were preventing deep sleep sometimes, but BBS was not really showing me what. Note that I only use BBS as a last resort as it can increase battery use...
No other real problems, but the soft key backlights wouldn't play with NoLED and were somewhat counter-intuitive. A bit trivial, but a mess.
My second CM trial - CM7
I like GB, it is mature and well understood, so CM7 RC 2 was therefore of some appeal. It had been developed over months and must therefore be fairly sorted. Surely.
Installed without issue on a cleaned platform as usual, including G Apps. Did the usual debloat and installed the usual Apps from the Market/Play, and some that were missing, like GMail. LPR modem was already there, Hooray! Spent rather longer fiddling with the settings in CM7 than CM9 since they were less obvious at first, to me anyway.
Switched off and put the phone on wall charge overnight and was rather shocked to find the phone was noticeably warm and displaying "Kernel Panic" in the morning. The phone had only charged by about 5% in total (to 64%). Worry Worry. I put the phone on USB charge until 100% without incident.
Started to use the phone as normal, the phone UI and operation was very good, fluid even. But, first problem I had was in the car. I paired BT fine, as usual, and made a phone call. After the call, I couldn't end the call on the car or phone - it had locked up. Oh dear.
Later, I tried the FM Radio during my daily walk - doesn't work, so why is it there? I tried Spirit FM - no way would it work. Oh dear.
The following day, I noticed that the battery life was amazing! I had never seen this phone sip juice like this. Deep sleep was always easily achieved. That was until the afternoon. I noticed that the battery level was declining at a much higher rate than earlier. I hadn't done anything different, so BBS was called in again. Nothing obvious shown but I kept seeing the GPS icon winking at me from the Notification bar, and continually. I always keep GPS on, but for some reason on this ROM, no GPS signal meant the ROM just kept trying. I played with various settings like Location etc. and managed to stop this odd behaviour, but this was too silly. I use a Smartphone for all the smart features. This wasn't very smart at all.
CM7 was my biggest disappointment of all the above ROM trials. It was the lightest and most promising, and yet the least reliable or functional. Which is a huge shame...
Today...
I'm now back on KL1 2.3.6, and it just works fine - day after day.
The future for me?
I would really like to use CM9 (or CM7 for that matter). They represent a number of ideals for me, including the open nature of development, the collaboration, a pioneering spirit and giving users a choice and a superb base to build on. I am no developer - I can split and modify kernels to a point, I can rehash ROMs with or without adb, I can amend frameworks. But little more.
Reserved for "tips and hints"
Avoiding problems
Always data reset and wipe before doing anything major from one ROM to another, or follow the installation guide for any specific differences in approach.
Avoid Titanium Backup like the plague - it invariably leads to functional issues later if you cross flash. Use Google and/or airdroid for everything, it all just works. So many friends and other forums I contribute to have had too many backup issues to count. Go clean. Forget about Google paranoia.
ES File Explorer is very useful and recommended.
Don't bother "calibrating" the battery - it's an outdated practice and useless. Just use the phone normally, and anyone who claims the battery life is "great" 1 hour after flashing a newly announced ROM is a fool. Likewise NEVER fully discharge a Li-Ion battery. Just keep topping it up. See here: http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_charge_when_to_charge_table
Thoughts
Newer ROMs are rarely better ROMs. Better means different things to different folk of course.
ICS ROM core LPQ to LP8 are largely all the same, just variants of the same thing for different markets. Some users believe they perform differently.
Custom kernels and ROMs are always work in progress and should be treated as such. Check out the number of revisions. Some kernel cookers are (welcome) enthusiastic amateurs that assume more is better and cram "fixes" in that the professional salaried software engineers have mysteriously missed. If you only need your stock kernel to be insecure, learn how to make it so. You are running Linux on your box, right?
Deodexing is not a means to improve performance, on the contrary.
Undervolting is a mythical beast
I bought a phone with an FM radio because I want to use it!
And I totally agree. to all of it. Tried all iterations of almost all roms available. For some reason keep going to my VR 3.0 nandroid back up.
Except CM9, I don't really think there is any real development going on. Most are just cooked up roms OR stuff taken from the CM9 tree and implemented OR so called fixes that have actually broken something else OR just debloated rooted official firmware (that AFAIK is pretty easy to do with the fantastic dsixda's kitchen or on a rooted rom).
Now fanboy's may flame as much as they wish to, but seriously a stable CM9 (hopefully..!) or a VR 4.0 is all I am willing to wait for.
Till such time VR 3.0 it is.

I don't agree with your final thought. Different ics rooms have really different feels. E.g. Look at scrolling from lpq to lp7.....and there are numerous others as well. If u want more specific thoughts and feedback, just browse through different ics threads in this section..

Hmm... I have browsed through the sections, and tried various "revisions" or versions of Samsung ICS today while jotting this lot down, and my view, honestly, is there is no real difference. That isn't to say there isn't, I just can't see or feel it. I do accept that playing with 3 ROMs in a few hours is less than ideal. And a drag!
I suppose if someone could deconstruct the ROMs properly and thoroughly...
Anyway, thanks for your thoughts, appreciated.
Very nice review! +1
Keep up the good work
I broadly agree with the OP.
ICS/AOSP/AOKP/CM9 have improved over the last few weeks, but I'm back on GB, and will probably stay with it until I get the SGS3.
May be subjective, but for me the GB stock browser, camera and dialler are streets ahead of what the rest can offer. Scrolling is smoother too. And I like/need a radio.

Seems like you and the OP only tried the AOSP/AOKP roms? Give the roms based on the latest official a try.
The dialer is still as good as always (unchanged), camera is actually improved with higher bitrate recording and the ics stock browser...is untouchable at the moment in my opinion. (Granted I use "ICS Browser+" from the market which uses the best ui in a browser I've encountered)
I currently use Dynamic's ICS rom and it would be extremely difficult for me to go back to GB at this point.

While I agree that in terms of loading websites, ics default browser is a little bit faster, scrolling and pinch and zooming is much smoother with stock gb browser. Also the dialer is worse on ics as it has removed the contacts section which means I have to put both the dialer and contacts shortcut on the dock.
I'm using Wanamlite v11.1, Siyahkernel v3.1, and Apex Launcher.
A winning combination in my opinion, that is now at least as good as the best GB ROMs in terms of battery life. 7 hours standby with 30 minutes screen time and i'm still on 87%.
In terms of fluidity and performance I think ICS /w Apex beats GB handsdown.
Thanks for the recommendation, but I avoid ROM mix ups, I can do that myself. The ones I have looked at have had some very dubious scripts and additions. I usually look at build.prop first, and generally find all sorts of hybrid attempts at adding stuff that is completely wrong. Lines taken from websites, other phones and so on.

Depends, it was like you say in Gingerbread days, not with ICS WanamLite nor Dynamic, only tried these + CM9
I am using Dynamic 1.4 LP9, it is as smooth and fast as CM9, but everything working because it is Samsung based
I tried the included NEAK and Speedmod kernels, similar performance and very good battery life, only 3% drain overnight, I dont play with processor tweaking

Dialer is laggy if you compare it with GB. CM9 variants have slightly more response dialers but overall, GB dialer is way more responsive. There is a small but noticeable lag when pressing a key and the time it takes to register on ICS (CM9 & stock).
Camera recording with stereo voice recording...! Seriously how many people do shoot video with a phone's camera? For facebook uploads mono audio is just fine..
Browser is a definitive improvement yes, and the desktop mode is welcome but browser mods have been available on GB since long.
It is not that ICS is bad. It is actually very good, but the way it has been implemented on S2 is downright ridiculous...! And not one stable vanilla build isn't really helping..

This is something I have been contemplating for quite some time now, quite possibly the last month. The only real thing stopping me is that for some reason alot of games (eg dead space and modern combat 3) don't seem to like it when i change roms, and even though all the ingame data is there, sometimes it decides I have to re-download.
I do miss it alot though.. and also red pill kernel
I might end up doing a backup of current my CM9 and take the plunge sometime soon. I've been using CM9 since around feb and lately I think my interest has plateaued and now I'm just beginning to get frustrated with little lags that are popping up more frequently (probably due for a wipe mind you!). The only thing about villiam rom is the bloody touch wiz launcher.. I just don't like messing with the launcher roms were made for either.

Mass lols to be had at the fact that a majority of the time they would be played on the device through the mono loudspeaker too
I also go back for GB..becoz i feel that ics so laggy at dialer, and PES2012 freeze and cant play on ics..but in GB all working great..

Currently trying ninphetamine kernel (as per VR3 - thanks for the heads up) on my fave stock KL1 more for interest than anything. Seems OK, no obvious difference from stock running as is apart from it being insecure, need a couple of days to evaluate in real life use.
Bloody good post. I've been using CM9 since the video recording bug was solved, and thats probably the longest I've used any ROM on the SGS2, I really like AOSP but the problem is it does still have quite a few bugs, and isn't quite as fast or as battery friendly as I remember the likes of Hyperdroid v6 being.
This makes me tempted to go back to GB. For me, it is still the ultimate for a daily driver. But I'm lazy so I'll probably stick with CM9.

Cheers for that - I would definitely recommend the 2.3.6 KL1 off Sammobile if you want a solid GB.
Dude, if you have not tried CheckRom RevoHD V6, then you have not tried the BEST gingerbread rom for sgs2.
This is why I can not use ICS (yet). Checkrom is just too perfect of a Rom.
Try it, tweak it to your liking, use it for a week or 3 then try and go back to stock.

Use the AOKP M6 its the best ,fast very stable.
I would say CM9. Because.....
-Built from the ground up from aosp. Makes it very clean
-Very Smooth, much smoother than GB
-Tons of other options such as lockscreen shortcuts, theme engine, status bar toggles etc.
-Lots of support
-Updated VERY frequently
-Almost No bugs.
I'd recommend CM9 or AOKP. Both can be found in the dev section here.
I've tried most ics and I'd definitely have to say slim ics.
It has strict rules about keeping it light so you can definitely expect serious performance from this one (most likely better than the rest) yet has all the cool bells and whistles from the kang project like customized toggles, battery indicators, bln, etc.
It's updated frequently when the author thinks something happens that warrants an update (like the linaro thing). Your phone will even notify you when a new rom update is available.
No bug fixes because, to be honest, i've been running it for a few months and I'm yet to find a bug. If you look through this rom's dev thread you'll find most people joke about something else because there are that few problems to talk about in this rom. They will seriously answer, however, if a real problem is posted.
The only thing to take care is the default launcher. Dev has included lightning launcher (for lightness purposes). For as awesome as it may be, most people find it a ***** to customize and just end up installing nova or apex launchers.
Battery's fine - lasts the day with heavy use, it's all i ask. Def lasts longer if i did less.
Some of my uses for this rom:
Heavy texting / phonecalls
Friendscaster (aka facebook whith awesome widget)
Bluetooth connection with my car (stream mp3 and handsfree, contacts even show in my car)
Heavy book/manga reading
Video watching, yt, flash pages, movies/series to kill time
Web browsing ( default browser is actually very good, plays flash like a champ)
Torrent downloading
Gps (my gps never ever worked no matter what. It's actually borderline usable with this rom)
Xda
Listen some music
Take pictures (very good camera, you can check my cat in the "show your best shots: thread)
Manage my calendar and quick notes
Document editing (gdocs)
Play some games (I'm on max payne atm)
Etc
If nothing else, definitely worths the shot. Try it out.
Elite's also good, or at least was when i left it.

I also vote for slim ics. I really like the idea about barebones rom with few apps but tons of settings. It's also fast, stable and updates have been good quality.

There are recently 2 noobs that create all of these annoying threads. I can't get it.
I vote for Infinitum LBR (sadly not updated anymore)
And ICS333.
Because they both work smoothly. Infinitum had a nicer notification bar however.

Why you SHOULD install a custom ROM

I installed the Team Eos 4 ROM with Android 4.2, after finally admitting that Asus has ceased updating the TF101. I can only say everybody should do the same:
It's easy. Took me less than 30 minutes, with these instructions: http://www.transformerforums.com/fo...nt/31927-frederucos-guide-root-rom-tf101.html
The device became (and I'm not overstating it) really lightning fast. Videos play better, everything happens at once. Somehow Android now looks better also.
The browser looks the same but feels totally different. It responds immediately and pages load pretty much as fast as with a desktop browser. Write in an address and the page is there. No more "The browser is not responding / wait or close" dialogs.
It's actually very stable and everything works. Nothing has crashed for me since installing, not even the browser, which is really something. The browser used to crash once or twice each time I used it.
You can install Adblock Plus (the Eos ROM comes rooted) and Avast with firewall
User control. A device can now have several user profiles. No more need to share your private issues with other members of the household.
The TF101 feels like a new device again suddenly
(Ps. Asus stopped updating TF101 after 1,5 years on the market, as they've agreed with Google. This is not very good customer service. 18 months is nothing - it feels like "take the money and run". They leave their customers with potential security problems, with outdated software. The older the software is, the more likely it is to be exploited.)
I'm also very satisfied with the Team EOS ROM. For me it's not quite as stable as stock, but it's faster and smoother.
A few notes:
- User profiles are not fully supported by most apps yet. I suggest you stay away for now, at least until we get decent su(do) support.
- Team EOS ROMs, while they put a lot of effort and time in (and I DO appreciate it!) are still non-official ROMs and devs work with what they have, so you can still expect bugs and random issues while they're reported and ironed out. Don't expect a 100% flawless ROM.
- 18 months is the time that Google will provide manufacturers with updates, that does not mean the manufacturer has any obligation to push out the update. If any of you guys saw the post here about the new AiO Transformer, you can see Asus are moving on to bigger and better things. While I'm not that happy myself about no official 4.1+ for this device, I'm pleased to see there's people working hard to make us awesome ROMs to keep up with the new stuff. Also, most other Asus tablets are announced to have the 4.1 update, so it's really just their oldest tablet (launched on March 30th 2011) that isn't getting it.
- You can "double" your "RAM" by adding swap space to your device on your fat32 internal sdcard space using Swapper (I mention it because it's useful to some extent - not real ram - and it's seldom mentioned).
I've mentioned it before... but I suspect that stability/performance issues are tied to the SBK revision you have, and the B/C version.
I look at Asus not supporting updates for the TF101 in this way: This tablet was their test run for what was to become their flagship design in the tablet market. It obviously worked and since then with the later models, the tablet/netbook hybrid idea has really taken off. The 300 and the 700 have bigger and better hardware so its what they are going to focus on. Don't look at the TF101's lack of support form the big guys as being its inevitable demise as much as its chance to shine in the custom rom community. The tablet is almost 2 years old and hasn't been officially supported for a few months now but the development between CyanogenMod and EOS as well as some of the other roms avaiable for this tablet makes it really stand. Its graduating into a fully supported developer gold mine instead of going to the grave.
EOS 4 is the rom I'm currently running and its a powerhouse even with some of the bugs that are being worked out. Its definitely proof that this device still has some miles left in it.
TL;DR: I totally agree. If you want a world changing experiences on your TF101, then check out EOS!
The ROM is not quite as perfect as I first thought. It has problems with speaker volume - it's not possible to set it loud enough to make it hearable from some apps. (And yes, I know about the volume boost apps, which don't seem to help, tried several from Play).

It also works better with the K.A.T. Kernel
I love JB. But its not stable enough as they don't have official sources.
I prefer ICS and nice kernel. OC, update, Build my own Rom, add what I want, call it a day.
Truthfully tho, I only use the thing for games, Emails, Reading, and Internet. Its fine for those things. I am selling it tho cause I want an N7. But the only reason is to match my phone. A Tablet is a tablet to me.
To be honest I haven't play around with any custom ROMs for several months. What really turned me off was the lack of a file explorer which I guess is the fault of Google not including anything in the source. I really happen to to like the Asus file explorer & haven't found another one that I like. That is my main reason for not. Maybe I'll give JB another shot.

Try ES File explorer, it's not eye candy like Asus' but it has much broader support, like built-it LAN and FTP capabilities. You can just browse to your network share, and start your movie/music/whatever from there without having to copy it, etc... it's pretty cool.
Other Asus apps have been modified to work in other roms. I use their deskclock, email, weather and task manager apps on Team EOS' 4.2.1. Task manager won't actually kill any apps but it still displays them fine. There's also their dayscene wallpaper, etc... search and browse through this forum in the apps section, you'll see lots of people posted modified versions. It almost feels like stock with all those mods.
I can vouch for ES. It doesn't look pretty but it's insanely powerful for a file browser. You can access networked computer, directly access all your cloud storage and also access root if you are rooted. The only thing I would like to see them do is give you the option of dragging and dropping from one directory to another.
I also use a fair share of the Asus stock widgets and such. I noticed that wit hthe task manager, I get random FCs with it but it doesn't affect anything at all.

Try Solid Explorer - same functions as ES file explorer but looks nicer - dark and light themes are good and dual pane usage.
I'm currently using EOS Rom, overall its great, but I'm going back to LiquidSmooth (4.1) for the following reasons:
-Performance. LiquidSmooth performance is the reason why I'm keeping this device even though Asus doesn't support it anymore. Performance is beyond my beleif. (Only gripe: random reboot once every 48 hours or less, while sleeping. Still, could be worse)
-Weird EOS nightly 90 bug for me. LCD backlight randomly turns off until next reboot.
On another note: +1 for Solid Explorer. My choice too. I considered AntTek too but in the end I think Solid Explorer fits my needs better. And cheaper!

Awesome! I finally decided to install EOS after reading your post. This old Tf101 feels like a brand new tablet now and iam not exaggerating.
I compare the webpage loading time with iPad 2 and they are compatible! Thanks for the post and the developer team.
I want to recommend everyone to flash.
I am big EOS4 fan now as well. last months with Timduru's work has litteraly change my tabs. even has my ipod luvin kids wanting time on them.
they are stable enough now that i can hand them over to the kids and evrything just works.
my setup i use
latest eos4
latest KAT kernel (this makes the rom run far more smooth and buttery as well as fixes minor glitches for me)
KAT app (Havent really had a need for this other then it can help get sound volume up in some apps for me. only lost sound once and kat app brought it back easily)
APEX launcher (really speeds up and smooths out the desktops and adds load of customisation i like)
cifs manager so my pc server now is like an extra internal memory card built into my tab
Alot of ppl have made a few working roms and they all deserve a heaping load of thanks for thier time and efforts.
no rom is 100% but a few are close enough now to be very usefull and far better off then where asus left us.
Over the Christmas holidays I took the plunge and rooted and flashed my TF101 with RaymanFX CM10 (I think, that's the version, the device isn't with me ATM). Since then I've been impressed with the speed and functionality but I've had a two reoccurring issues, Wifi drops out frequently and no sound after a few hours uptime. Both issues necessitate a reboot to fix.
Anyway... I'd like to try EOS4 with the KAT kernel, it seems to be more actively developed and used.
As I said the device is already rooted and flashed it since it was a PITA to reload all my apps and setup email accounts etc, I'd like to know if installing EOS4+KAT is going to require completely wiping everything again or are there steps I can take to reduce the effort?
Just to confirm, I'd need the flash 3 things from the recovery bootloader to switch: 1. EOS4 zip, 2. KAT kernel, 3. gapps is that correct?

yes do need all 3 as well your recovery needs to be compatible with 4,2,1. you usualy need the latest version of recovery to be able to do that.
I use twrp 2.3.2.3 which is very easy to instal. just get the goomanager of the play store if u want this recovery and it can instal it for u as well and it will tell you when there are updates to your rom etc....
as a general rule I always do full wipes when changing roms. cache, system etc.... as sometmes the file system is different and needs this.
Why I should not flash a custom ROM:
nothing supports the Slider. Sigh.
Emitted from my Nexus Prime
RaymanFx CM10.1 with the latest nightlies uploaded by 'josteink' and kat kernel 94 for CM10.1 works really well. Full android 4.2.2, smooth and fast. Also adding gps.config file seems to get the gps working as well.
I'm still kicking Team EOS3 #81 with KatKernel #69 & KAT App
99.9999999% bug free
Only thing I have to do sometimes is press a button in Kat App to reinitialise the audio after a long deep sleep
Lightning fast and butter smooth and everything works perfectly
Couldn't agree more having the Team EOS 4 custom ROM has been wonderful. Thanks to the team for all the effort and time.
