HD+ Better Battery Life - your experience is welcome - Nook HD, HD+ General

I spent a whole lot of time fiddling with my Nook Color to get really great battery life from it. On CM7.2 or derivative, with the right settings, I got up to 17 hours of screen-on time reading books (no wifi) and once flying home from Europe I watched movies for 10 hours straight... although the battery was just about dead then. When the NC started to really go south I bought an HD+. I'm super happy with the HD+. I just need to figure out a way to get some more battery from it.
I am running the mid-July build of CM10.1 on EMMC and there appears to be far fewer tweaks available with CM10.1 than there was with CM7 to improve or tune battery performance. I watched one movie (stored on SD) and it consumed over 50% of the battery life. I am getting more like 10 hours of reading books out of mine.
My goal is to get 16+ hours reading (using Moon+ Reader and epubs) and 8+ hours of movies (MX Player). Any suggestions on what I can do to get it there? Is there a kernel with clocking yet? I think underclocking while reading books is one key to long battery life in that case.

Well #1 thing u should do is disable ALL location based settings, including within google maps. This drains battery significantly.
If you could afford it, get rid of all Push notifications...
Well, other than that, there is really nothing else I could think of other than brightness down and exit all apps.
TBH, the battery on CM10.2 I'm using is pretty good w/o underclocking or w.e.

Yeah I've done all that. I actually went ahead and upgraded to the 9/01 build of CM10.2 in hopes that it would have more options for battery life improvement, and it does. Unfortunately some of my apps won't work, but I'll see about sorting that out later.

Battery Life

In the interest of branching out of the main thread, I thought I'd start a thread regarding battery life- how many hours are you guys getting? For those who have somewhat decent battery life, what tweaks/settings are you using?
I went and disabled background data syncing hoping this would at least help improve battery life only to find that even idle (with no real use at all), this thing eats battery like there is no tomorrow.
I think with super light usage the most I've gotten is about 4-5 hours. There HAS to be a way to improve on this. I can never walk around without my charger in my bag- that is just crazy.
So any ideas or suggestions would be great! (By the way, I'm running Dexter's latest rom on top of eLocity's official firmware update).
I'm posting 4 hours 54 minute uptime right now with a quick 10 minute game of fruit slice, light to moderate web browsing, and moderate to heavy instant messaging. I have 29% battery left.
I generally set my apps to sync no more frequently than 30 minutes at the least. I turn the screen off when I walk away to do something. Other than that the tablet stays running on my couch side all day.
I have also seen it go for days on standby mode without going dead. I'm happy with the battery life. My Archos isn't much better, and is much less powerful of a device.
I'm also on ElociMod (which is based off the newest firmware... )
cant get more than 4 hours no matter what i do. running dexter's modc
We might be able to help the battery life using some clever tricks with SetCPU. I know it helped on my Pandigital Novel, and 2/3 on that device was used to power the screen, as opposed to ~1/3 for the processor. I'm gonna guess it might be the complete opposite of that on the A7.

I don't think SetCPU works on the A7 or any other Tegra2 at least not yet.

It doesn't... it will FC.
CPU Tuner installs and runs. It shows a min of 260 MHz and a max of 1000 MHz, and it has profiles based on battery charge. I just installed it, so I don't know what to expect.
I wanted to resurrect this thread and post my experience with A7 battery life.
I am running Dexter 1.2, brightness at 35%, WiFi always on, Bluetooth mostly off, screen timeout at 2 minutes. Syncing three mail accounts, weather and Google calendar. Limited or no background syncing of other apps.
My typical day with the device consists of;
a full charge in the morning
3 to 4 hours of standby time
30-45 minutes of web use
another 3 to 4 hours of standby
3 to 4 hours of heavy web, texting, reading, and games
I place the A7 back on the charger at night and it usually has about 20%-25% charge left.
I figure I am getting about 4-5 hours of use and close to 8 hours of standby each day fairly easily.
This battery life is very comparable to my Droid 2 Global.
The ipad battery has more than 4 times the capacity of the A7, but only twice the run time.

[Q] Concerning Overclocking

I think I've finally gotten a good grip on this Nook stuff, a million thanks to everyone here.
My Nook is where I want it to be currently with the latest CM7 stable.
It seems like everyone is overclocking and now I'm curious.
Do you guys keep the overclock on the entire time you're using the nook? Or do you turn it on when you need the extra performance?
Does it shorten the battery life by much?
Is it harmful at all to the hardware?

Good questions. Overclocking is, on the surpface, something one would imagine harms our toys. Actually, most can handle well. It's all about the voltage and not so much anything else. Dal and others have worked out the tough stuff and provided us with some extremely useful kernals that noticably increase speeds (demonstrable with apps like Quadrant Standard or Smartbench) Apps run quicker and the overall experience is sweeter. Ondemand is the usual govenor I employ set on boot. (Running CM7.0.2 1.1 OC) Still getting a full day of use before recharging.
Usually it only kicks up to overclocked speeds when it needs it, cm7 can regulate it's clock speed pretty well depending on what setting you use.
technically overclocking will slightly shorten the life of the processor (uses more power, produces more heat). It doesn't really matter though as my battery will give out long before my processor, regardless of whether i overclock or not.
By that time i'll probably be thinking about buying the sweet new nook color 4 anyhow.
I have one of the handfull of Nook's that can run at 1.3 GHz, although I have it set to boot at 1.2 GHz to eliminate the occasional bootloop from trying to load up at max speed. Once booted I kick it back up to 1.3 GHz and leave it. My battery generally lasts 48 hours of light / moderate use with the display being the single biggest power hog.
48 hours of using seems impossible to me when I use my NOOK at work for FB and some little gaming (not 3D) and after 8 hours is at 50% of battery.
I use daily 300/1300 at On Demand and never had any problems with device.
Extra heat is harmful. So if the device isnt get so hot, then things are ok.

You're right 48 hours of use is impossible. To clarify.... I'm usually off the charger for about 48 hours... not 48 hours of use. I'm 20 hours off charger now, wifi running about 10 hours, screen on for 2 hours 24 minutes and battery at 53%.

When does the battery meter reset? Is it when you charge the battery back up to 100%?
I just got CM7 working and haven't had a chance to go through the entire battery yet but based on what I've seen so far I can maybe squeeze out 5-6 continuous hours of usage, does that sound reasonable?
Based on what I see it's significantly hungrier than the stock.

Depending always on what U do during usage (different to play games or just browsing the internet), U should really have the hours U propose.
Soon the problem with the sleep will be solved and the autonomy will be back to normal.

Battery life

Hi all
Here in UK We still waiting for TAB 10.1
very confused between ipad2 or this one
after a lot of reading I've made my decision to buy this one, but the only thing I really want to know is the battery life for this one as it is very important for me
( doing a lot of travelling long distances on the plane)
Engadget said that its battery lasted above 8 Hours of video loop while others said it lasted just above 5 hours.
I know that the Tab cannot beat the Ipad2 when it comes to Battery, but I am still buying the tab10.1 if its battery lasts 1 or 2 hours less than the apple product.
Could you please -who own this item- let me know how the battery life is?
Many Thanks
i just received mine the other day. i let it charge overnight.
i then used it for just about 9.5 to 10 hours and plugged it in when the
battery meter was at 15%.
the battery life is excellent !
it really depends what you are doing on it. I use it throughout the day but primarily while at work to keep my sanity (I work overnights). I watch loads of HD youtube videos and the browser since my office thought it was cool to put website blocks and disable flash (for youtube blocking) so to see videos on sites or actually see full sites the tablet is crucial. I tether the wifi from my HTC Thunderbolt for access. I do also play some games. I can get through my 8 hour day with about 50%
Edit
based on pandamaja's response below, I didnt actually touch the screen brightness so that means it is working harder to auto adjust itself according to the brightness it is in
Battery life so far has been excellent. I don't travel as much as I used to, but I can see this thing lasting for a good while. Like others have mentioned, it depends on usage.
The display is going to be the single largest battery drain. I'm not sure about the 'others' tests, but the tests done by engadget and apple are done with the display brightness set at 50% I believe.
I've been very impressed with the battery life so far. My Evo basically lives next to a charger. Before I went to bed last night I considered not even charging the tab.
So far so good for me. I haven't timed it but I have been using the tab on and off for a couple for days before needing to charge it.
I do keep the brightness level pretty low.
I have had my tablet on since I bought the device. I charged it for an hour after playing with it, and have watched 3 hours of TV shows, and when I have not been using it, it has been idling (for 4-5 days). The battery was at 37% when I finally plugged it in last night. This tablet's battery life is the best battery life of any device I've ever owned.
pretty much been having the same experience as everyone here. i've gone through 2 days without charging (currently at 47%), and this is with browsing the internet, watching videos, and playing games. depends on the display brightness and usage. i have mine set at about 50%, as i find that plenty sufficient.. this panel gets bright. the tab also holds charge real well when in standby.
Thanks for that, very helpful
any one has set it on video loop with reasonable brightness (50% i guess good)?
How long can u get?
the reason I am asking because I am flying quite regularly to mexico ( 10 hours) and mostly watching movies
any help very much appreciated
Many Thanks
how did samsung even manage to squeeze that amount of juice in?

Hey OP
I believe that most reviews for the tab says it can play ~10 hours of video using 65-70% brightness. I've read at least 5 reviews having similarly result. Only one review got 5 hours of video. I would doubt that review.
FYI, the ipad2 gets 10.5 hours under 70% brightness playing video.
I got my tab yesterday. I played video for about 2-3 hours, using 70% brightness, and baterry went down ~30%. I would say a 10 hour video playback seems to be correct.

Battery Life

Thought it would be a good idea for people to share their average battery life on whatever rom/kernel you are running. And also what you use your TF for.
my average running EeBomb with rom stock kernel was about 18 hours I play a lot of games, music player running about all day and a lot of XDA. Just switched back to Revolver Blades 1.2 OCkernel so far very unimpressed with the battery life you lose by overclocking by.2ghz not really worth the little bit of speed you gain for significant battery drain. I flashed yesterday fully charged need a few days to see the average not looking good though
It really does depend with Blades/Krakd if i use stock clock and mild use probably 20hrs if i o/c to 1.59ghz and rape it for a day gamming through hdmi using a ps3 controller through bluetooth 8hrs tops
If i barely used it at all stock freqs or even under clocked u/v then probably 36hrs
Its a bad question and you will get different answers 7 days a week although i have found krakd/blades to be fair on my battery no matter what i do

I would say it sucks at best, at least mine anyway. My transformer was fully charged yesterday & I didn't use it at all. So after 16 hours with the screen off the battery is at 74% with zero use. Battery info tell me that 72% of battery use was while idle. I doesn't seem to make a big difference if I turn on flight mode. I have tried Auto Airplane Mode app too with the same result. It might be time to wipe my Transformer & start over.
Well
im not really testing my battery
but in friday it was disconneted since 8AM
until 7PM
from 14:30 in really heavy use with 80% dock battery as start
i downloaded 2 torrents
browsed the internet all the time
and sometimes a little bit of youtube
brightness around 20
ended with 10%
70% battery lost in around 5 hours
in really heavy use
krakd rom 1.5.2
OC to 1.2 GHZ
i think its pretty impressive
considering i still have a full tablet battery life and dock lost only 70%
which not a lot for this use
There is already a ton of threads on this and one that was organised to collect it, which includes a POLL for a much better overview. Use search if you please....

[HD+] Battery Life - Your Experience

Hi,
I don't own a Nook tablet yet but I'm really interested in buying it considering its value.
One thing I'm worried is about battery life.
How does it perform on stock rom and CM10.1? How many hours do you get when reading only, browsing, watching video, gaming or whatever you do? And when it's deep sleeping?
B&N said that it holds up to 9 (video playback) and 10 (reading) hours, but I doubt it's true, or am I wrong?
I appreciate your opinion
My wife uses her HD+ (non rooted) just for reading and some music and she is getting right around 10 hours, she is coming from an e-ink reader and wishes it was more but it does seem accurate.
Mine is rooted stock, I get about 7 hours (screen time) from mine. I unplugged Wednesday at 5:30am used it a bit more than 2 hours a day and when I plugged it in Friday night (yesterday) I had about 15% with 7 hours screen time. I play games and read mostly but do watch an occasional video and/or listen to some music. That seems to be my average. I think I could get more if I used it all in one day but I don't have 8+ hours in a single day to test that theory.
I see about 1 to 2 percent loss overnight roughly 6 to 6.5 hours between when I go to bed and when I get up. Not sure what my wife is seeing. That seems to be on par with what I was getting on my Lenovo.
Overall the times they quote seem pretty close. You can extend it by shutting off wifi and turning down brightness but that is not the way I use my tablet.
The video playing estimates are with the wifi off and the video loaded on the nook. I usually stream over wifi from Amazon and am getting around 4-5 hrs. Which I think is pretty good considering the 9 in screen and the low price. Probably would be more but where I am usually watching is bright so I have the screen up to 100%.
One area that the Nook HD+ beats all other tablets is with battery drain economy when sleeping. The Nook bleeds on 1% at most over night, where others range from 3% to 10% (the latter end being more common). The Nook is the first tablet (besides the iPad or the TF300 with battery dock) that I feel comfortable going with somewhere for beyond a day without a power supply. Android tablets usually suck for battery drain in sleep mode, but the Nook HD+ bucks that trend. I notice the same result with stock 2.1 and CM 10.1, so 10.1 is a no-brainer for anyone wanting to truly use the Nook HD+ as a tablet and not just a reader.

Stock kindle HD 8.9 was even more impressive on stock kernel (which is otherwise useless, of course):
So perhaps the 4470 lends itself to better economy or they just happen to have better hardware level coders.
I was losing 1% over 4 days with stock nook HD+
with verygreen full install (not hybrid) 6/24 build I was losing 2-3% overnight at most.
with 6/30 build, it's back to not even losing 1% overnight which I'm thrilled about.
My previous tablet was a Yuandao N101T and that damn thing lost 2% per hour, but
very likely to poor hardware implementation of sleep mode...that thing never
went below that drain no matter which rom I used.

Note that stock has wifi off when sleeping by default, so it's not a fully fair comparison.
(and they do this because they totally suck with wifi on in sleep, juts like we did when we used same drivers).

That just sounds like htere was no deep sleep at all, or some device was not turned off and kept draining power.
Actually I would be very interested in other people's screen time. Like most people here I'm getting great battery during sleep by not so great when I'm actually using the thing. With apps like BetterBatteryStats I'm getting 3.5-4 hours of screentime, and 1.5-2 when watching movies. So I would be interested to see what you guys get...
BTW I'm running VG's 7/18 CM on EMMC, brightness is at about 1/3rd and I'm running the "hot plug" governor.
So what your screen time is like?
I'm using vg cm10.2 0824 build. Right now it's with 66% being 3 days turned on with 3 hours screen on. Have been only browsing web and gmail. I'd say it'd last for 9 days and 9 hours screen on if the battery is ok or cm calculation is good. Let see how it goes. By the way, I let my screen on 1/3 or 1/4 of brightness.
