Hi... I recently upgraded to 4.3 and have tried both radios .84 and .83... the problem is that when my phone is on 2g/3g mode, the signal sometimes just drops and refuses to come back.. it does not even come back if I try to manually register on my network (i.e. Vodafone Mumbai) and gives me an error 'failed to register on the network'... however if I put my phone in 2g only mode, it instantly picks up signal and does not drop it... anyone else from Mumbai can confirm whether they are facing any network issues after upgrading the radio?? I have read on internet that it might be related to radio.. also, I have also tried replacing my manually cut sim by an authentic micro-sim from vodafone but to no avail... now I might try reverting back to 4.2.2 to see whether the issue is radio related...

No such issues here. I'm on JWR66Y build with .84 radio.

In my other thread I asked for help with a similar issue (.84 radio was messing everything up)

A couple users helped me find a solution. Flash a 4.2.2 radio

Had a fine working phone under WM6.5 but decided to try out Android.
Followed the instructions as found in the stickies and had Andrioid running in no time.
But.... After experiencing the well known 3G (H) vs.GPRS switching issues and data drops, I tried the Network app from MAGELOW.
I fideled around with the settings (GSM only, CDMA auto etc.) but no improvement.
Then suddenly no 3G(or H) anymore only GPRS when selecting "GSM only".
Anyother combination of settings leads to not being able to register on the T-Mobile network.
(not able to make a call)
Well back to WM6.5 and... same problem there.
One difference; 3G(H) works for internet but not for Calling (no registration on network possible). Does mobile internet require different authorisation than calling?
tried different Android builds based on different phones but no improvement.
So after flashing with latest stock firmware and receiving a new SIM from T-Mobile still no change.
So now sending the phone in for repair but still wondering if it was coincidence or Android.
Will post the result from the repair later but be warned when using the MAgelow Network App. (this warning is also on Magelow's site but I saw it to late)
Why didnt you just do a hard-reset to see if the problem is fixed rather than sending it off to repair?

did that and a full upgrade with the latest rom which also didn't help.
Even removed the HSPL and downgraded to the original SPL but nothing changed.
it will be picked up tomorrow, so it's clean now.
Hi All,
I am losing data connection every couple of days, it seems to happen when the phone swithces from WI-FI to 3G. I am on AT&T and what happnes is that the phone automatically swithces the APN to the MMS one and does not connect to the internet anymore until I switch back the APN. Pretty strange. 3g icon is there but the arrows dont get signal (green/orange)
The funny thing is also that I did not have this problem until I hard reset my phone because I had a spring board lag problem....that might be solved but I now have this one......anybody with the same issue?
Thanks
I am using the European SGS2, and it sucks on AT&T, although I have never had the issue you are describing.
If you do not mind, please post here any solution you find, for future reference.
thanks
I was having the same issue after I upgraded to 2.3.4.
Upgraded to 2.3.5 and it is gone.
If you don't want to upgrade. Then you can just flash the 2.3.5 modem and that should do the trick.
I have a similar problem, however my Wi-Fi disconnects randomly instead.
Also have the same problem. How can I flash modem? I know how to root and know the Odin. But how can I flash only the modem? BTW, my radio is "unknown". Need help.

I've had my Nexus 4 for a few weeks now and have found that there appears to be a radio fault with my device. I originally thought it was a software bug but I've since rooted the device and flashed a new radio. I then installed CM10. Sadly none of the following have fixed the problem.
The problem is somewhat temperamental and the actual problem varies however is usually something like the following:
The phone boots up and has mobile signal without any problems.
However, it will then lose signal and the phone status menu will vary but usually says something like this:
Network: Unknown
Signal: -105 dBm 4 asu
Network Type: UNKNOWN:0
Service Status: Out of Service
In this state the signal indicator shows a hollow outline however I also get a problem where the network connects to 'Hutchison 3G UK' whereas when it works it will connect to '3', all other phones display '3' too. The signal indicator is solid gray with no blue bars in this state.
Switching Airplane Mode on and off doesn't fix it. The phone requires a full reboot to get the network back.
Is this a hardware fault? I'm going to drop into 3 tomorrow and get a new SIM to see if that fixes it.
Google doesn't appear to show anyone with similar issues so I don't really know what to do now.

Flash a stock factory image and see if you have constant coverage again, if it doesn`t help and the new simcard you may have to send it in for repair. Maybe the issue is antenna related.

When you say stock image is that just a stock ROM or is it an entire package that will reflash radio + recovery etc?

You can try flashing the latest .48 stock radio in CWM and see if it helps. Link http://d-h.st/8Jx. Unless you allready have it as CM doesn`t flash a radio or bootloader.

I have exactly the same issue. Please keep this thread updated. I have flashed different combinations of soft and got best results with baseband version .27 with stock 4.2.2, but gsm connection is still dropping. It gets disconnected when untouched.
Flashed the full stock image from Google.
Still having the same problem.
Do Google take returns from handsets not bought from Google Play?

No, you have to contact the store or webshop where you bought the phone.

Hi,
I have a weird problem with my S4.
At work I have some areas with really bad coverage so sometimes the phone can stay for a few minutes (or even say 1h) out of service.
This is all normal. The coverage sucks, the building is weird, not problem here.
The problem is that when I go outside where the signal is normally full it does not register back to the network.
Even more it does not even go to "emergency only mode". On a few occasions I arrived back home (10Km + drive) until I realized people can't call me because the phone is out of service.
What is even weirder is the fact that on some occasions, even though the (no service) (/) sign is displayed mobile data works just fine.
My previous iPhone did something similar too - it took a while for it to recover signal after exiting the coverage black spots but never more than maximum 5 minutes.
To me it looks like a radio modem issue and maybe this is aggravated by the fact that my carrier uses the same 2100MHz frequency for both Data and Voice.
I would like to know if any of you have experience anything like this or if there is some app available that can monitor what's happening.
what network and firmware you on and wich s4 variant:thumbup:

It's Europe standard i9505.
Network is Digi.Mobil Romania - but I doubt it's relevant since it can't get even emergency only (other networks).
so... any idea?
Android needs to work on it's notification. No Service and the reception bars only gauge voice coverage. You can test this out by using Service Mode to do a PS Only (data) attach instead of the standard PS + CS (voice) attach. It'll say no service, but data will be fine.
Emergency only, is when there is coverage from other operators but not yours. No service, means your way off the grid.
I've noticed the issue you describe and it's only on some firmwares. Try a newer one and see if you still have the same issue. But you might notice a drop in your battery life because your phone will be scanning all the time. If you're happy with no coverage at work, best to just turn it off and then turn it on when your outside.
Best option is to tell your operator about the lack of coverage. There's someone in charge of stats who get's beaten every time you drop a call. You'll get extra attention if you've got other businesses around you, so let them know that too.
Thanks for the reply.
I am already on the latest firmware and I noticed the same behavior on the firmware before this one.
Unfortunately I can't try out other modem versions (from other FW packages) as that would void my warranty.

but...what about reboot phone? i know isnt funny but until u find a problem u can just reboot ur phone while u are going out from ur office...or just try to enable and disable airplane mode
Of course reboot works but I am looking for a solution, not a partial workaround.
The most annoying problem is that if I forget to reboot it when I leave work it will not recover network connectivity even if I am in areas with very good coverage, areas where you would expect your phone to work.
It looks like when it decides to give up it does not try again. It is very weird that it also drops the signal from other networks (the "emergency only") even if it's well in their coverage areas. I guess I will have to switch phones... Even if this issue was present for the iPhone too it never took more than a few minutes for it to recover on its own. And I'm not an apple fan
Just to do some brain ecercise...do u keep in power save when u are out of signal ? Its possible that disable check after few tries
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app
It's not in power save. I only use that function in case of battery emergency.
Same problem here
Hello, I have the EXACT same problem here. I am in Argentina.
Now, I've been in the USA for a few weeks, visiting, and while my phone was roaming, I didn't have a single problem with my phone.
Since I came back, 3 days ago, I haven't had any problems in Argentina, either.
Is it possible that something got activated when the phone was registered to another company? (it was AT&T i believe)
If that's the case... maybe you can try putting a sim card of another company and see if you still have the problem?
Please let me know if you still have the same problem or if you got it solved. I would love to know something more scientific about all this.
I don't know if this is relevant, but my compass is off by about 30 degrees. Maybe my phone is defective?
THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME WITH THIS

Hi I have similar issue,
My phone says its out of service or no signal or no network also I checked my sim card in other phone in the same place and it is fine. The i9505 model in ireland meteor provider was running ok until deicided to give a try to another network operator, when I changed the sim card it didnt only catch up the signal from new network provider but also it refuses to catch the old network provider. Funny thing is that I am receiving 3G but no signal bars and no service sign is beeing displayed. I am running latest official BTU (UK) firmware, the phone was never rooted, altough I had to remove the simlock and instal unbranded firmware. The phone worked fine with the newest updates for a month and now I am facing this trouble.
No factory resets nor installing same radio (couple of times) have helped. Also I used odin to instal same firmware (as it has locked bootloader) so I cannot revert back to other stock firmwares, but still no joy.
hope that someone faced the same problems and describe how to solve this issue. thanks
Hello,
I am experiencing a network drop from 4g to 2g in a lot of buildings, why is that? I am not in a basement and my colleagues have no network problems and some of them are even on the same carrier as I am. It also happens in some rural areas, again when there should be a better signal. Any thoughts?
Also, could it have something to do with the fact that the phone is from USA and I am using it in Europe?
Experimenting with radio firmware and new sim card.
I'm experiencing the same problem. My carrier is Virgin Mobile Canada (I'm in Montreal).
It looks like this is a reoccurring problem with the 6P. There have been lots of posts about similar issues in the xda forums.
This thread talks about hardware problems with the radio IC and some folks seems to have found technicians that can repair it.
In this thread some people are talking about APN settings and perhaps a new sim card with updated APN information (which is what I will try next).
Finally in this thread folks talk about installing earlier radio firmware. Some say radio 3.85 works better and others say radio 3.72 or 3.74.
I'm experiencing this problem on radio 3.88 and I've installed an older stock image with radio 3.87 but no luck. Still had the same problem. If the new sim card does not solves my problem I will try flashing radio 3.85.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any progress.
